To hold a reservation, we require a 25% deposit if you are making the reservation more than 30 days before your booking and 100% of the payment if within 30 days of your booking.
  • You can make a reservation during our hours of operation; however, we do recommend that you call a few days before your intended booking time to ensure that your desired time and boat is available.
  • If your intended boat requires experience, please submit a Boating Resume on our website first. Once our staff review your resume, you will receive an email with more information about making a booking.

What do you need to rent a boat ?

  • In order to rent our Paradise F13s and Lunds, you need to be 21 years old or over with a valid G class driver’s license OR 18 years old with a Pleasure Craft Operators Card (boating license).
  • For the rest of our fleet, you will need to fill out a Boating Resume , so we know how much boating experience you have. Once your resume has been reviewed, you will be contacted with information about anything else that may be required for your rental.
  • For all boats, we will provide all required temporary licensing. You will need to provide a credit card for a damage deposit, which is returned to you at the end of your rental. You are also required to have a cellphone on the boat with you so we can reach you while you are out on the water.

 What does “experience necessary” mean?

  • Having previously taken a course.
  • Owning your own boat.
  • Previous rental history with us or another provider.
  • Prior practical experience on boats of an equivalent type and size.
  • You must fill out the Boating Resume , which asks you to outline what kind of experience you have with boats and must be approved by our management before you are permitted to take out any of our sailboats or larger powerboats. This is for your safety and the protection of our boats and equipment.

If I have no experience, which boats can I take out?

  • If you have no experience, you are eligible to rent two of our powerboats, the Paradise F13 two-seater powerboats and the Lund Fury four to five-seater powerboats. All you need to rent one of these powerboats is a valid G Driver’s License and be 21+ years old, or a Pleasure Craft Operators Card and be 18+ years old. These boats are allowed within the inner harbour only..
  • For all keelboats and larger powerboats, you also can hire a skipper/instructor for an additional fee. We require that you make the reservation at least seven days before your desired booking. Please call us at (416) 203-3000 for any cost inquiries.

How do I get boating experience?

  • You can take a course recognized by Sail Canada, which we offer for both sailing and powerboating.

What kinds of courses do you have?

  • We offer a variety of courses for both sailing and powerboating. We offer courses in dinghy sailing, keelboat sailing, powerboating, as well as ‘dry dock’ theory courses like the Toronto Harbour License, VHF Radio License, International Yacht Master Training, and Navigation courses.
  • For a full list of courses, course-start dates and pricing, visit our Courses page .

Can children take your courses?

  • We encourage children aged 6-16 to attend our sailing summer camp to gain experience on the water.
  • Children of any age may attempt the PCOC exam, however they must be 14 to take the Toronto Harbour License course and 16 to take the VHF-DSC Radio License course.
  • Our introductory courses are available to any students 16 or older, and for children aged 14-15 if accompanied by an adult.
  •  All dinghy courses are available to students 16 or older, and 15-year-olds that have successfully completed the Harbourfront Centre Camps Sailing CIT program.
  • All other cruising, powerboating, and navigation courses can be taken by any person 18 and older, or those aged 16-17 if accompanied by an adult.
  • Note: if you are booking a course for yourself and a child that requires accompaniment, please ensure that you purchase two registrations.

How fast do your boats go ?

  • Our Paradise F13s and Lunds are required to stay within the Inner Harbour which has a speed limit of 6mph, or approximately 11km/hr. The speed of these boats is limited in accordance with these speed limits.
  • Our powerboats that require more experience can reach faster speeds. The skipper of these boats will be required to judge their speed appropriately.

Which boats am I responsible for refueling ?

  • You are not responsible for refueling any of our boats. Fuel is included in the price for our small powerboats (Paradise F13s, Lunds and RIBS) and all sailboats. A flat fee will be paid at the time of your booking for larger powerboats.

Where are you allowed to go?

  • All dinghy sailboats, Paradise F13s, Lunds, and RIBs are restricted to the Inner Harbour.
  • All keel sailboats and larger powerboats are permitted to go in both the Inner and Outer Harbour. Please be aware that in the case of inclement weather, these boats may be restricted to the Inner Harbour. Any restrictions will be clearly communicated at the time of your rental.
  • Our powerboats are welcome to travel through the Toronto Islands, and you will be given a map to take with you on the boat that details where you can and cannot go.
  • No boats are permitted in the Toronto Island Airport zone and are subject to a $10,000 fine if caught in the area.

What is the difference between a keelboat and a dinghy sailboat ?

  • Keelboats have a fixed keel at the bottom of the boat. This keeps the boat upright. They also have an engine on the back. Keelboats can vary in size from two people and up.
  • Dinghies do not have a fixed keel, and therefore can capsize. You need to be able to right the boat. Dinghies do not have an engine. They are usually for 1–3 people.

How do I become a member?

  • You must fill out a Boating Resume to provide us with the details of your experience to ensure you are qualified to use our boats. Please select either J24 or Harbour 20 if you are interested in a keelboat membership; or Hobie Cat T2 or RS Zest if you are interested in a dinghy membership.
  • Once your Boating Resume has been reviewed by our staff, please phone our office at (416) 203 3000, email [email protected] or visit us at 275 Queens Quay West to join as a member.
  • Students who complete our Sail Canada Basic Cruising, Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising, Independent Dinghy Sailing, or CANSail 3 courses are eligible for discounts on Membership.

Where are you located?

  • We are located at 275 Queens Quay West, at the corner of Queens Quay and Rees Street, south of the CN Tower and a block west of Harbourfront Centre at 235 Queens Quay West.

Is there parking available?

  • The P3 Rees Street Lot is a street-level car park located on the north side of Queens Quay West, just west of Rees Street, right across from our location.

When does Boating Season begin and end?

  • We are open for operations on Victoria Day weekend in May and the season runs until Thanksgiving weekend in October.

I took my Basic Cruising exam and have not yet received my seal. When can I expect it?

  • It takes approximately 4–6 weeks for seals to be processed. If you have not received your seal and it has been longer the expected 4–6 weeks since you wrote your exam, please contact our office at (416) 203-3000 or email [email protected] .

APSC is the best kept secret in the Toronto Harbour. What are we all about? A true sailing oasis in a unique urban wilderness. A member-run sailing club in Toronto. A mooring field for 100 sailboats. The best access to sailing on Lake Ontario in the GTA. A vibrant community of sailors from all walks of life.

To our members and their guests, we offer the use of our club house amenities. Best of all, we have a sandy beach to relax on in the shade after a day of sailing, and some of the best sunset views in Toronto.

Bird sanctuaries occupy much of the surrounding shorelines and it is not uncommon to see great blue herons gliding down for landings, next to swans who paddle around, ever on guard. Use the Birder's checklist to keep track of which of the 316 species that have been spotted!

It is hard to believe that you are only minutes away from Toronto’s downtown core

We can’t see the city skyline

All we can see is the blue sky, trees surrounding the mooring basin, fluffy clouds, and stars at night

We don’t have a lot of night life close by

Just a quiet anchorage, sounds of birds, yips of coyotes, the odd slap of a beaver tail, friendly dinners by candlelight, quiet conversations with other members and visitors but we do admit that the social functions sort of break the mold.

We aren’t next to a major roadway or city attractions

So parking is free, and the only background noise comes from the birds, people having fun, and boats entering and leaving the mooring basin.

We aren’t next to a manicured park

We have wilderness trails to explore, and arguably the best birding and wildlife area in the city.

We don’t have dining room or bar tabs

We have big social events but no associated monthly fees and dress code. Bring your own food and refreshments to enjoy alongside friends at the end of the dock.

We have everything you need for the ultimate sailing club experience

AYC_Clubhouse.jpg

Our club is also a hub for social events, from casual get-togethers to formal galas. Come be a part of our community and experience the thrill of the water!

SailPast2.jpg

A Brief History

Founded in 1906, the first clubhouse was located on Fisherman's Island, a narrow sandbar running south from Cherry street at the east end of Toronto Bay.

About 1914, control of Fishermans Island was transferred to the newly formed Toronto Harbour Commissioners and the club was moved to the north-east of Ward's Island.

In 1918, severe ice conditions shifted the pilings, damaging the foundations and eventually causing the collapse of the clubhouse and the destruction of many of the dinghy's stored inside.

1919 marked the move from Ward's Island to a site on the Aquatic Club reservations at the foot of Bathurst Street. In this new location the club discovered the problems of dredging a launching channel through 14 inch water depth extending about 100 feet out from the club, contended with the loss of many members due to the lack of water depth and survived the impossibility of collecting dues during the depression of the 1930's and dwindling membership during WWII.

But the AYC preserved long enough to enjoy a revitalization in the 1950's. As a streets were laid in the waterfront area, their site eventually became known as 24 Stadium Road. The club remained in that location until the autumn of 1987.

Annual Dues: $660

Initiation Fee: $2,500

Mooring Debenture: $600 (Refundable*)

Building Debenture: $2,000 (Refundable*)

Summer Mooring: $1.80/sq. ft. (10' x 30' = $540)

Winter Storage** : $2.00/sq. ft. (10' x 30' = $600)

*The debentures are refundable following notification in writing to the club of the member's decision to resign membership and will be redeemed in the order of the waiting list as each new senior member is accepted.

**Winter storage includes lifting out and launching on the days the club brings in a mobile crane.

The Alexandra Yacht Club is a self-help club, which means that we do all our own maintenance, upkeep and repairs. All senior members must contribute a minimum of 20 work hours per fiscal year (October 31).

For more membership information contact the Membership Director at  [email protected] .

A Cheque in the amount of $5,760 ($2,500 initiation fee + $660 yearly membership dues + $2,600 debentures) + HST + Summer Mooring Fees will be requested on approval of membership.

After the first year costs will be annual membership dues, summer mooring and winter storage fees

"Not your usual hotel: Sunborn London is, in fact, a 420ft yacht moored in the Royal Victoria docks, a symphony in white and charcoal which could easily have been left behind by a departing oligarch. It's well-placed for the O2 arena, London City airport and the ExCel centre."

Floating Fancy: Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Review

Finding the perfect hotel for a London stay can be tricky, with countless options and locations available. Sunborn London offers something a little more unusual, as it’s not your standard bricks-and-mortar establishment; pick the Sunborn, and you’ll be staying on an extravagant yacht. But while it stands out from the crowd visually, does the rest stand up to scrutiny?

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel, to give it its full title, is located at Royal Victoria Dock, an area of east London that has undergone extensive regeneration and is home to the Excel exhibition centre. Despite its Docklands location, the Sunborn yacht is easy to get to, thanks to the new Elizabeth Line that runs through the city, with stops at Heathrow Airport, Paddington, Bond Street and Liverpool Street, to name just a few, where you can connect to most other London underground lines. Arriving by car isn’t too much of a chore either, and with ExCel next door, ample parking is available just a few minutes walk from the hotel.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel entrance

Arriving at Sunborn London certainly makes an impression. The vast open space in front of the floating hotel allows you to take in the size as you get closer to the riverfront. There’s a lift at dock level – one of few signs that the yacht was indeed built specifically for this purpose – which takes you directly to the stylishly designed reception level, where you are greeted by friendly staff, ready to check you in for a stay.

While the purpose-built yacht might not have sailed the Mediterranean, it still has all the features of a sea-going vessel, with heavy doors and raised sills. There’s even an impressive cruise ship-esque double staircase in the middle of the reception area, which is finished off with a crystal chandelier, adding a touch of elegance.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: The Room

We spent the night in a mid-range ‘Yacht Executive’ room with a balcony overlooking the surprisingly blue waters of the docks. The room was spacious and comfortable, with a good-sized desk area should you combine business with pleasure. There were a good number of plug sockets dotted about the room and at each side of the bed – something often overlooked – with a mix of UK and European sockets, which was a nice touch. Everything you would expect was there, including tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge and a safe, should you need them.

The bathroom was a reasonable size, with a spacious enough shower. Confusingly though, rather than having a simple shower control, there was a bath mixer tap with a shower attached. Once the water was turned on, a toggle needed to be pulled to direct the water through the shower head. With no bath in sight, this seemed rather odd.

Unlike the smaller rooms on the lower two levels, our room had floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water, with a double-glazed door leading out onto our little balcony, complete with two chairs. While it was a nice little bit of outside space, it wasn’t well designed in that once seated in the chairs, the view was of the solid steel safety barrier rather than the river. Perhaps some safety glass would be a better bet.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel executive room

Despite that, it felt like a well-thought-out space, with considerate touches ranging from the surfeit of power sockets to the welcome bottles of water. Between 19 and 23m3, the rooms aren’t huge on paper, but clever use of space and light makes them feel far more generous than they could.

Throughout the cabins and the public areas of the yacht, there are lots of mirrors, reflective surfaces and warm coloured wooden panelling, which adds to the character of Sunborn London, and adds to the sense of space, leaving you in no doubt that you are onboard a vessel.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: Lands End Restaurant

The onboard restaurant is located at the vessel’s rear, with an outside space providing views towards The O2 and Canary Wharf. Like the rest of the public areas, it is adorned with warm-coloured wood and reflective surfaces, making it feel both welcoming and light and airy.

We began by perusing the wine list and decided on a bottle of prosecco – such glamorous surroundings deserved a few bubbles! The bottle arrived at the table, was opened and poured, only to find that it had been served at room temperature. Our waiter did try to rectify this error, but the second bottle had also not been chilled. A cold bottle was eventually found from the Sundown Bar on the deck below, but two bottles had been wasted by this stage. It’s an amateur mistake to make and set a low bar for the rest of the evening.

Nevertheless, we put this mishap to one side and checked out the food offering. The menu had a good selection of options, with meat and seafood dishes available. However, the choice for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet was very limited.

I selected the mixed marinated olives as my starter, and my dining companion opted for the Gazpacho. Both arrived quite quickly and were tasty and fresh.

yacht hotel london reviews

The main course was more of an issue, as I suffer from lactose intolerance. My only option was wild mushroom risotto with vegan cheese and grated truffle, with a seasonal house salad on the side. My companion had more choice and opted for the ‘Sunborn’ fish ‘n’ chips, which consisted of beer battered haddock, pea puree and chunky chips.

When the food did arrive at the table, it looked well presented, and while the fish fillet did look relatively small, the risotto was somewhat more substantial.

The wild mushroom risotto was well cooked, the risotto rice was tender, and the dish was well seasoned and tasty. The side salad, however, did leave a little to be desired. There was little or no dressing to add flavour, which was disappointing.

The fish and chips were fine, if unexciting. It’s a dish that’s difficult to get wrong but also difficult to impress with. The kitchen managed to stay in its lane, offering something perfectly acceptable, with fresh chips and tasty mushy peas, although portions were a little meagre.

Dessert was again lacking in options for my needs or those on plant-based diets, with fruit and sorbet being the only, somewhat unimaginative, options. I reluctantly opted for the three flavours of sorbet, while my dining companion opted for the much tastier sounding Bakewell tart with ice cream.

yacht hotel london reviews

The Bakewell tart arrived without a hitch, but the lack of attention to the order in the kitchen meant that I was served two scoops of sorbet and one scoop of ice cream instead of three of sorbet. Luckily I noticed before I started to eat it, and I immediately notified the manager of the error. My issue is an intolerance rather than an allergy, but had it not been, this could have been a more significant problem.

With few guests in the restaurant the night we dined, there was little excuse for the multiple errors. While a long way from fine dining , the food was perfectly acceptable, but the lack of imagination in the menu and the lack of care in serving the drinks and meal tarnished the experience.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: Sundown Bar

After dinner, we headed down a deck for a nightcap at the Sundown Bar. As you enter the bar, lights and reflective surfaces surround you from every angle, making it just a little overwhelming against the dusk outside. We decided the sensory overload was a little too much, so we chose a seat on the outside deck with views along the docks to The O2 beyond.

Sunborn Yacht Sundown Bar

The overall environment and vibe of the place were pleasant and lively, with most patrons spending their time either gazing into each other’s eyes or gazing at the myriad lights of the city twinkling away in the distance. A surprising amount of time can be wasted simply watching the Emirates Air Line cable cars crossing the river, their red lights floating across the skyline in contrast to the blue and white lights of the city.

yacht hotel london reviews

There is a good selection of drinks available, but they are a little pricey, even allowing for London prices. A Diet Coke and a double Woodford Reserve bourbon came in at £20. The service was swift and friendly, recovering from the faux pas at dinner and rounding off our evening well.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: Breakfast

Breakfast the following day was on the outside deck of the Lands End restaurant and consisted of a cooked breakfast from the kitchen alongside a self-service buffet. The mix of table service for the hot food and self-service for the rest isn’t that unusual, but it was also self-service for tea and coffee, which, for a luxury hotel , is much less common. Disappointingly, there was hardly any hot water left in the urn to make tea, and what was there was lukewarm at best.

The breakfast was perfectly adequate and served quickly, suggesting that it is precooked in the kitchen and then plated up when ordered. While that’s not a significant problem, it is disappointing to be served fried eggs that have been kept warm a little too long when a fresh egg takes only a minute or two to cook.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel: The Verdict

yacht hotel london reviews

With countless highly-rated dining options within just a few minutes’ walk from the Sunborn, it’s a surprise and disappointment that the restaurant can’t match the standards that the rest of the hotel sets. With those other options available, though, it’s not something that should put you off, as it’s the hotel that holds the appeal.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel London review – a bargain London 5* hotel or a sinking feeling?

  • 18 February 2023

The Sunborn Yacht Hotel London always looked very smart and rather a fun way to stay in London, so when I needed somewhere to stay in the East of London due to the train strikes, I thought I would give it a go. It was originally built as an ocean-going yacht but then was turned into a hotel before it was ever used as a proper yacht and actually has no engines.

In this post:

Price and booking

I booked direct with Sunborn and paid £233.10 which for a Friday in December was fairly cheap for London. This was the flexible rate which allowed cancellation until 2pm on the day. It said that if you book direct you get a complimentary upgrade. It was also one up from the base room being a river view rather than the dockside view.

If you are interested in staying there is currently a decent offer with Groupon for a Classic King Room with Dockview for Two with Breakfast from £149 per night.  They also have an offer on their own website for 20% off if you stay one night, valid for stays until the end of April 2023.

Location and The Yacht

The yacht is moored right next to the Excel so it has decent transport options within a few minutes walk. I arrived on the IFS Cloud Cable car via North Greenwich tube on the Jubilee line and caught an amazing sunset. It is around 7 minutes to walk from the cable car. There is also the Customs House that is on the DLR and Elizabeth line to the side of the Excel around 5 minutes walk away.

Check-in at Sunborn Yacht Hotel London

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Check-In

There was quite a queue when I arrived at around 3.30pm and then when I did check in it wasn’t the fastest process. The person helping me had to keep walking away to sort out a trainee on another booking which I found quite rude and it was a rather laborious process considering I had already checked in online.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel inside stairs

They asked if I wanted to leave a credit card on file, to which I agreed as I needed to use room service and also planned to have breakfast.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel London room

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Room

The Yacht Classic Riverview Room I had booked appear to only be on the lowest floor. The room did promise “excellent river views” which I got since I was practically in it, but I couldn’t see much else. The upgrade that it promises for booking direct (subject to availability, of course) was not forthcoming either.

There was often a long wait for the lifts as you had to use them even to get from reception to the way out one level above.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Room Door

My first impression of the room was good, being a large size and more like a Junior Suite. There was a desk for working or doing your hair/make-up with a socket nearby and a huge mirror. However, the light in the room was quite dark in this area.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel TV

The TV was a bit ancient (a bit like the decor) but it did the job.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Nespresso Machine

There was a Lavazza coffee machine and a kettle and even some biscuits, which always cheers me up in a hotel room (simple things…). There was also a fridge with two bottles of free water.

Hildon water in Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Refrigerator

I liked that there was a large area for you to lay out your suitcase for unpacking. There was more storage space than most people could ever want or need unless you were staying more than a week.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Towel

The bed sadly was not comfortable at all and I ended up with back ache after tossing and turning all night. As I always caveat, I am very sensitive to beds, having paid a lot of money for a great Hyponos one at home. When I looked in closer detail I could see why as the mattress was incredibly thin.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel bedside table

The bathroom was also not particularly luxurious and definitely felt like a yacht bathroom being very small.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Bathroom

Toiletries were provided which did the job but were nothing special.

Prija

The towels were rather thin and old too.

Food and drink at Sunborn Yacht Hotel London

I needed to eat something before I headed out for the night since I had not had lunch either. There was a fair choice on the room service menu but I went for the standard burger as I knew it was likely to be a fairly boozy evening that needed some sustenance.

Burger

It arrived in around 25 minutes but was missing my drink, so I had to wait quite a while for them to fetch that as well, which was annoying. I also found it very odd that I had to pay the delivery person directly when I left a card with reception. I have never experienced that before. You could see the menu from a QR code and order online, which I like. The burger was tasty, and it was good to get a chutney on the side.

ApplesApp

Breakfast was not included, but for the sake of the review, I went to try it. Again it was weird that I had to pay with my card when I came in. None of this leaves a very luxury hotel-type impression.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel stairs

The breakfast was a buffet which was set out with the food in one place and then the tea and coffee somewhere separate. I ended up with coffee as when I first went up there was no tea available.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel Inside

The buffet had a reasonable selection including a full cooked english, smoked salmon, meats and cheeses along with pastries and bread.

Bread Selection

The way it was presented was a bit odd as it didn’t look great and made it hard to see what there was.

As well as the restaurant which is also open for afternoon tea and dinner, there is the Sundown bar which would be lovely for sitting outside in the summer. (Not so much in the snow!)

Conclusion for Sunborn Yacht Hotel London

While this is not really what I would call a luxury hotel experience, you do get a lot of space in your room, which you would struggle with in many hotels. It is certainly a unique experience, and for something that is a decent price and fairly smart, it is not a bad choice. Would I rush back again? No, but if I was attending something at the Excel I would consider it if the price was right.

Thanks Michele for highlighting this deal, and for giving an honest and thorough review. It doesn’t sound perfect, but I’m giving it a go next month as the price is reasonable for London and it helps solve a problem that was coming up! It’s always good to hear here about places that are a bit different.

Thankyou for your review, I also may consider this in the future. I was shocked at your picture of how thin the mattress was! Did you leave feedback for management on the concerns you raised in your report? I would be interested to know their reply if they do get back to you if you did let them know. You don’t mention how much you paid for breakfast and your burger meal. I guess we could check this online in advance?

Thankyou once again for your time. Please keep up your reviews, I find them really interesting 🙂

Thanks Rob. I don’t generally leave feedback unless it is a fault in service that they can rectify. Most brands and hotels read the reviews anyway via their PR agency. The burger was £18.50, and I think breakfast was around £18 also.

Hi Michelle, Thankyou very much for your reply. Much appreciated.

Agree with your review Michele. We were underwhelmed by the yacht – we did pay full price. Horrid decor, average service and that annoying lift to get off the boat!

Thank you Michele saved me some money as I was thinking about staying here. Now I think I will find somewhere else. Love an honest review

Afternoon tea at a 5 star hotel, count us in. Since Gibraltar is under British control English is their spoken language. Our bus driver Shannon took us completely around this little island before bringing us to the stop for a snack and tea before returning us to the port drop off point. I'm glad we chose to book a shore excursion, get off the ship, learn about the history of Gibraltar and drive past The Rock. Little Sandwiches of ham, rolled tuna, cucumber, plus some sweets. Definitely not a fancy high tea like at Boston Library or my favorite white hotel with columns in Waikiki. This was a simple choose your own tea bag, pour your own hot water, help yourself to the two layer items split between 4 people. My favorites were the ham sandwich the bread was super soft, the ham sliced so thin. The scone or crumpet like a biscuit to cut in half to add some clotted cream and jam from a mini jar of jam. Shannon was knowledgeable and the kindest tour guide who helped whoever needed assistance onto a collapsible stool onto and off the bus.

Hair there. That's right, I found a hair on the wall near the hair dryer in the bathroom. I went to the lobby desk told them about it and requested a new room. The person told me all the rooms were booked that night which is amazing because she never looked to see. Clearly she is Psychic. She notified housekeeping and told them to do a double cleaning in the bathroom. They showed up, wiped off the hair, found a couple of spots on the floor, wiped that up with a hand wet towel thing and that was it. They told me this happens all the time because the girls clean fast. I should note I told the GM about this via their post stay survey. They responded by saying they did a thorough cleaning job. If that's thorough, I'm FDR. The room is ghastly. Totally dated as in 80s. I was afraid to use rhe shower which the bathroom had tiles, and old days decor. I mean it screamed 50s in appearance. The bed is hard, and basically just a mattress like thing on top of two blue bases. Mine nearly came off. I did have a water view. Room food options via service is poor and good luck getting into the restaurant. They will make a made to order omlette for breakfast, but the spread is poor and you have to go early, as I did for one day, to have hot. I note one day, because I checked out of that dump and went to the Novotel next to it, which is 1000 times better. Let me put it this way. 3rd class on the Titanic would have been better. The Posiden Adventure with you hanging on a Christmas tree upside down would have been better. Dump.

This is a different way to stay in a hotel, a dry docked boat. Overall the service was not bad and the rooms are decent. There is a restaurant and bar which is not bad. I was there for a party and they did a good job hosting the party. They are friendly and helpful. the rooms are a bit pricy so get prepared for that. Overall I would recommend and would stay again.

See the table in the picture? It has a nice view right? And it was empty when we arrived, and still empty when we left 1.5 hours later. But there were only 2 of us so we weren't allowed to sit there. Jus watch it from the middle of the room. They made accommodations to find space for other people outside, even though we'd requested this at booking time. Not for us though. Pretty poor service experience all 'round really.

We was looking for somewhere to take two little boys that was a little different. My son had two trips to Disney cancelled due to Covid, so I let him pick where we go. He absolutely loved the idea of staying on a boat so we opted for the Sunborn. I'm so so glad we did. Everything about this stay was perfect. The hotel is immaculate. The breakfast and evening meal were superb. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The bed, honestly the most comfy bed I have ever slept on. The best thing though was the service from a gentleman named Micheal. He went above and beyond to make this a special stay for both the adults and the children. I've never experienced such amazing service and thoughtfulness and I've stayed in many hotels. In my opinion this is a five star hotel and the service (thanks to Micheal) is the best in the world. When someone ensures the children have an amazing stay, as a parent you could wish for nothing more. Thank you for having us. We will be back. There are also treatment rooms, we didn't get to experience them but we are planning to the next time we stay. If you are considering staying at this hotel then go for it, you will not be disappointed.

Beautiful yatch in docks at East London. I attended and was playing music for a birthday party on the top deck. Place looked amazing and the staff where very friendly. The look of the boat is very plush. Didn't try the restaurant but we had warm canapé which was nice and presented well. Would like to spend a night and eat at the restaurant to access this hotel better.

We stumbled across this yacht while looking for somewhere to have a drink before heading to the O2. It was a really beautiful day and so the deck looked like a perfect place to sit for a couple of cocktails! The setting is really lovely, especially in the sunshine. Very dramatic views of the Thames all the way round the boat, and on a sunny day the water even looked appealing. The service was friendly & attentive. The cocktails were OK (a little on the pricey side, but to be expected). You're definitely paying for the setting though, which I would say is worth it! A really great place to come for something a little different.

Colourful cocktails!

Great location, good service, and nice venue. This is still a "hidden gem" for those who are needing hotel rooms or meeting space near the ExCel Convention Center. Docked permanently across the grass park from ExCel and Hotel Novotel, the Sunborn's impressive profile welcomes guests up its gangplank entrance aboard a unique yacht venue that can accommodate overnight guests or double as meetings/events space. Opened recently in the summer of 2014, this venue is quick to catch up to speed with the service and support of the most seasoned hotel properties in the area...and has worked through most of the learning curve issues that most brand new most of the learning curve issues that most venues painstakingly take awhile to work out.

Just okay, but honestly not as nice of a hotel as we anticipated. The view from our room (the side opposite the water) is pretty disappointing. Our room tablet says the hotel bar is open until 2am on Saturdays, but late Sat night when we planned to order service, reception at the front desk told us those are old hours and it actually closes at 1am; staff said these hours were valid a year ago. Not sure why this hasn't been updated? Very well-made cocktails in the bar, but pricey. The queen bed in our room is actually more like two beds pushed together (there is a gap in the middle) which makes it a bit more uncomfortable for my fiancé and I to sleep closely. We can frequently hear very loud footsteps outside our room reverberating through our room, and there is no ventilation in the bathroom which has made our room stuffy. Service in general has been decent.

Photo of Lauren D.

I wish I had the same experience as everyone else here but I did not at all! We arrived and were put into room 1030. When we got in, we noticed it was quite warm and stuffy so we turned the air down. We had plans so we left our stuff and came back, and it was still warm. I looked at the temp and it was 25* when we had turned it down to 15*. We tried dealing with it, turning it off and on, etc and nothing worked. My boyfriend and I don't like complaining so we just went to bed. I woke up an hour after falling asleep drenched in sweat, the temp was now 26* and I am mad and sweaty. I call down and they switch our rooms. SAME problem at 1046! The air is like on 23 when we get in, we turn it down to 16, and it has stayed above 22 all night, ranging from 22-26! SO annoying! I feel like others have had this problem before in these rooms and they put us in these rooms anyways! The carpet has huge brown stains, couch had brown stains, bathroom was tiny, everything is so outdated! Not worth the money I spent at all! When I told the staff at checkout, she said that if we paid for another night they would upgrade us to the water view! As if that was any kind of reconciliation. Ugh will not be back ever ever.

A Unique Stay at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel London Review | UK

Sunborn London Luxury Yacht Hotel

Looking for somewhere unique to stay in London? Well I think I can give you a push in the right direction! How does a luxury yacht sound?! The Sunborn Yacht Hotel in London is docked permanently in the Royal Docks, right next to the Excel Exhibition Centre and even offers views of the O2 Arena and the London Skyline!

Disclosure: Please note some of the links in this post are affiliate links, which means I will receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking. For more information visit the Privacy & Disclosure Policy.

The yacht isn’t small, it’s huge. When you first enter you take a lift to the reception area which feels definitely very boat like…a very fancy boat with grand staircases and chandeliers…but the low ceiling makes it feel very cosy!

Sunborn London Reception

Classic Dockside Room

The Sunborn Yacht Hotel has 131 rooms and 4 suites altogether. I stayed in the ‘Classic Dockside Room’. I’ve never stayed on a boat or been cruising and was surprised by just how large the room felt! I LOVED the large window. Some of the rooms have balconies but we were satisfied with the window and spent a lot of time sat on the windowsill watching the world go by!

Sunburn London

The beds are large and comfortable (big enough for my Sister to be happy that I was nowhere near her…). If you like watching TV in bed though, the screen is positioned in front of the sofa rather than directly in front of the bed. If watching TV isn’t your thing, there was a little library of books in the room too!

Sunborn London Classic Dock View Room

The room amenities include (free):

  • Tea (3 flavours), coffee and hot chocolate…there is only one pack of hot chocolate but the cups are small enough to spilt it between 2 people and for the flavour to still be strong enough.
  • 2 glass bottles of still and sparking water.
  • 2 packets of fruit biscuits.
  • Bathroom toiletries
  • Wifi INCLUDING the use of a tablet, which has hotel information, room service facilities, a London guide, news, internet browsing and more.
  • Desk and mini fridge.

Hotel Amenities

One of our highlights of the Sunborn Yacht Hotel was the Sundown Bar . As well as an indoor seating area, there’s an outdoor deck which is great for the rooms that don’t have balconies! We paid £6 for ‘mocktail’ juices that were garnished with flowers (which almost made the £6 worthwhile)! The meals aren’t too badly priced considering the ‘London prices’, a bowl of fries was £4.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel London UK

There’s also a restaurant on board that serves breakfast, dinner and even an Afternoon Tea service.

Sunborn London also currently offer 45 minute morning personal training sessions on Saturdays and Sundays for £18 which includes breakfast and smoothies. I think this is AWESOME, I stayed during the week but would have signed up for it if it was available!

O2 Arena and London Skyline

The nearest tube station to Sunborn London is Custom House on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) . Royal Victoria is the next closest which is a short walk away. Follow the signs to the IFS Cable Car , once you’re at the docks, simply walk AWAY from the cable car along the water and you can’t go wrong. (The cable car is the quickest way to reach the O2 Arena ).

London City Airport is only 1 mile from Sunborn London. (Heathrow = 22 miles, Gatwick = 26 miles, Luton = 30 miles…they may all be under 30 miles but driving times are 1 hour+)

Sunborn Gibraltar was the original ‘floating hotel’ which was followed by its sister hotel in London. They plan on expanding the fleet to other worldwide locations too!

The Sunborn Yacht Hotel London

This experience was amazing, we stayed here for the C2C @ O2 wow...... A stones throw literally from the venue, we got the Emirates Sky line (right next door to the yacht) which dropped us into the O2!!, location, location, location - couldn't be better! The hotel is truly spectacular, the yacht is immaculately clean (trust me I'm fussy), the attention to detail is outstanding, the staff are always on hand and nothing is too much bother! On check in the receptionist enquired of our day, we told her we had tickets for the O2 for the evening and were getting a taxi back, we were promptly handed a card advising us to ring the yacht and they would make arrangements to have a taxi car collect us outside the O2 after the show!!! Nothing was too much trouble!! All the staff are utterly charming, and they actually look happy to be at work, unlike some hotels! we did not have dinner on the yacht but did stay for breakfast the next morning and true to Sunborns exacting standards the breakfast was quite possibly without doubt the best breakfast in London (organic bacon)! The beds are also super comfortable, amenities are Molton Brown (nice touch) and each room also has a Sony Tablet .... Free to use with free WIFI, Great experience, we will most definitely be back to try the restaurant and spa.... My new favourite London Hotel, thank... Stayed overnight in a family room with our 9 year old. The room was big enough for the three of us with coffee and electrical to enjoy. Excellent staff and service. Breakfast good value and super location for the O2. Highly recommended .

Dear Guest, Thank you for your recent stay aboard Sunborn London and posting this kind review for other Trip Advisor travellers’ consideration. I am delighted that your stay with us was so successful and equally it is great to read that all of the details in the hotel room and around the hotel were appreciated, especially the great service provided by our team. The hotel is closely located to O2 Millennium Dome, ExCel centre and Emirates Cable car and within easy connection with central London via DLR trains. We are looking forward to welcoming you again aboard Sunborn London in the near future! Best regards, Apostolos Fanaris Front Office Manager

we were visiting the Ecobuild Show at the ExCel, we travelled from Glasgow to London on the overnight train which you can never get a good nights sleep, we arrived tired and ready for a shower to freshen up and head to the show. unfortunately due to a mix-up on the booking site which had defaulted to the Sunborn Gibraltar site, we had ended up booked into the Gibraltar hotel. I explained that I had selected the London hotel from the drop-down menu and duly filled in the information to book a nice big cabin with balcony and view over the river. the staff were extremely friendly and after a short talk with the hotel manager. we were supplied with the same beautiful cabin with balcony and breakfast included for the same price we had booked on the Gibraltar site. a saving of over £100. I cannot say enough about the level of service in this hotel and the beautiful rooms. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will go back if we are ever back in that neck of the woods.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your recent stay aboard Sunborn London and submitting this kind and thoughtful review for other Trip Advisor travellers. I am truly delighted to read that you have been so well taken care off by our crew and that our efforts to amend any unexpected reservation concerns and eventually compensate any inconvenience occurred were appreciated and overall contributed to your enjoyment! Indeed we pride ourselves in the concept of Sunborn London being yacht hotel and on providing unique and memorable experiences to our guests. I am therefore very pleased that we have ensured your return to Sunborn in the future – I would highly recommend to pamper yourself with one of the treatments at our Elemis Spa. We are looking forward then to welcoming you back aboard Sunborn London in the near future! Best regards, Apostolos Fanaris Front Office Manager

My boyfriend and I had a lovely stay at this hotel! It's worth the money! Beatiful rooms, space and in the right location if you are going to a gig at the O2 areana! The Spa massage was great! Staff helpful and smiling! Defiantly worth spending a little bit extra to make the whole expectance worth while!

Cleanliness

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying aboard Sunborn London and for taking the time to share your lovely feedback with other Trip Advisor travellers. I am delighted to read that you have enjoyed all of the facilities in your well-appointed room and also other on board facilities such as our Elemis SPA with its great range of pampering treatments. Sunborn London Yacht Hotel indeed provides a unique opportunity for all guests to appreciate the distinctiveness of the whole stay experience, whilst being conveniently located close to the Emirates Cable Car and O2 arena. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Best regards, Apostolos Fanaris Front Office Manager

I'm working at the Excel all week which makes this hotel is handy as it is literally a stones throw away. I was checking in early (11.30am) and was thrilled to be told the room was not only ready but i had been upgraded to a deluxe room with river view. The room is large and comfortable with a desk, a balcony (overlooking the thames with O2 arena as the view!) and has all the mod cons along free wifi which is a definate plus when staying away with business. First impressions are very good and well done to Sandra, Mital and Claudio on front desk for their top class service.

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying aboard Sunborn London and for taking the time to share your feedback with other Trip Advisor travellers. I was pleased to read you find the hotel and on board facilities lovely and the location convenient for your stay related to your business at Excel centre. Indeed the hotel being located directly on the river Thames offering splendid views over the O2 Millennium Dome and Emirates Cable Cars and central London can be easily reached by public transport. I would highly recommend to book with us directly or visit our website for the best deals on hotel room rates or attractive packages for any future stay. We are looking forward then to welcoming you in the near future! Best regards, Apostolos Fanaris Front Office Manager

I booked one night as a surprise for my husband's 60th birthday and he was thrilled. I was disappointed that we were given a room dockside as I had paid for an exec room and had advised that it was a special occasion but the staff were very helpful in relocating us to river view and a lovely balcony room. The food for lunch, and dinner was excellent but I have had much better breakfasts in other hotels. It was a little annoying to be presented with a full bill when I had prepaid for the evening meal but again thus was quickly sorted out by the efficient reception manager I would certainly like to return for another stay .

Dear Guest, Thank you for choosing Sunborn London for your celebratory stay and for sharing your comments with other Trip Advisor travellers. I am so pleased that you chose to stay aboard Sunborn to celebrate your husband’s special day and that the crew have looked after you so well. It is always rewarding to read that our vision of creating memorable moments for all of our guests was reflected in your overall satisfaction – from the upgraded and well-appointed room, through amenities to the efficient guest service provided by my team. Also our superior category executive rooms coming with a balcony area are perfect for a memorable stay, especially those rooms offering unique in London view over the river Thames, and I am pleased that you have enjoyed this feature. I would definitely recommend to book directly with us in the future to guarantee this aspect of the appointed room. In the meantime we look forward to seeing you again aboard Sunborn London in the near future! Best regards, Apostolos Fanaris Front Office Manager

Location and the novelty of staying on a cruise liner

Overall, this was fine accommodation for London with good access to the metro system and numerous restaurants. It's located in a fun area and staying on a boat is always a unique experience. We liked waking up and looking out our window to see the people kayaking and swimming in the river.

The Luxe Review

All aboard this luxury superyacht hotel in London, open for you to stay right now

' src=

Our plans to sail the French Riviera for the summer may have been somewhat derailed this year. But thankfully, it turns out we can live out our superyacht dreams closer to home – and we can book in to stay, right now.

The luxury Sunborn Yacht Hotel, London is a floating hotel – so it’s also the perfect option for those who would rather avoid any choppy waters. Seasickness is so passé.

yacht hotel london reviews

Moored at the Royal Victoria Docks, by the ExCel centre, the Sunborn London Yacht Hotel is the city’s only superyacht hotel, and one of the most unique luxury experiences in London. The yacht hotel had its grand reopening this weekend, as the UK hospitality industry opens back up.

Each room and suite of the 136-room floating hotel boasts beautiful river or dock views, while the plush Yacht Executive Rooms have their own private terrace or balcony, too. Every room is stocked with high-end Prija toiletries, and offers a new in-room dining experience, with an extended menu, Grab & Go wrapped breakfast items and snacks – all ordered through the rooms’ tablet.

yacht hotel london reviews

Along with the stays at the hotel beginning again, comes the reopening of the yacht’s gorgeous Sundown bar: arguably the most elegant place in Canary Wharf to enjoy an aperitif. The third-deck dining venue offers panoramic views across the water, exclusive wines and spirits from high-end distilleries, and a sumptuous menu of bar bites, too. Guests must pre-book their place in order to regulate numbers, while seating at the restaurant and bar have been adjusted to safely social distance, too.

yacht hotel london reviews

The hotel’s Land’s End restaurant is also back open for bookings. The high-end restaurant promises to take your tastebuds on a ‘voyage of discovery’ with a refined menu of European and Asian fusion, a sumptuous setting and enviable views.

For its reopening, the hotel has had a deep, hospital grade sanitisation of all rooms and public spaces. It’s had months to learn and perfect its safety measures: during lockdown, rather than closing its doors, the hotel acted as a place for NHS staff at the nearby Nightingale Hospital to stay, and served breakfast and dinner in the yacht’s Land’s End restaurant.

yacht hotel london reviews

More of the new precautions on board to protect guest and staff wellbeing are a digital system for checking in and out, protective screens on reception and sanitiser stations every 2 metres.

We thought we wouldn’t be back on the water for a while – but a luxury superyacht break in the capital has sailed to number one in our staycation wishlist.

Sunborn London offers nightly rates from £109 In a Classic Room. Booking details at sunbornhotels.com/london

Sunborn Yacht Hotel, London – Paul and Carole’s Review

We stayed at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel for 2 nights on a trip to London. If you have visited our blog before you will know that we love cruising , so we were very excited to stay on a yacht. Here’s is the review of our stay.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

The welcome and booking in at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel

The entrance to the hotel is actually two lifts that take you up to reception. As you walk out of the lift a pretty impressive large chandelier and two curved staircases greet you.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

Check in time is 3 pm, and we arrived early. The staff were really helpful, we were able to check in and and our bags where looked after until our room was ready. This enabled us to start exploring the yacht.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

Our room on the Sunborn Yacht Hotel

We booked a Classic King room with Dockview and were not disappointed. Our room was number 1027. The window was decent size looking out onto the dock, not a spectacular view, but enough to watch the world go by.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

The room was bigger than we had expected with a really comfortable queen size bed. The shower was a good size too with complimentary Molten Brown toiletries which was a real treat! As on cruise ships there is a lip and step into the bathroom, do remember this, unfortunately we didn’t which resulted in a few stubbed toes.

There was a sofa and coffee table with a TV opposite and there was also a selection of books available. The desk area was a decent size, with multiple plug sockets both English flat three pin and European round two pin all around the room.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

The wardrobes were a decent size with ironing facilities, the only criticism would be that there were only 4 hangers, not a huge problem but what is it with the majority of hotels and the lack of hangers! There was a good size digital safe which was big enough for a laptop too.

We were very happy our room, do have a look around…

The Sundown Bar on the Sunborn Yacht Hotel

The Sundown bar lounge area is directly behind reception and leads out onto a deck area with seating. The views from the outside area look over to the O2 Arena and the Emirates Cable Car.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

It is a large bar area with a extensive selection but drinks are very expensive, as you would expect on a yacht in London.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

There is also a restaurant where you can choose to have breakfast at an extra cost. We chose to eat out and bought snacks to have with the complimentary tea and coffee before we went out for the day.

WiFi was excellent and available throughout the Yacht.

How to get there to the Sunborn Yacht Hotel

From Paddington it was easy, change at Canning Town on the DLR and take the service towards Beckton. Get off at Royal Victoria (Custom House was closed) and take a short walk towards the ExCel. You will see the Sunborn Yacht Hotel.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

The purpose of our visit was to see Bruno Mars in concert at the O2 arena and the location appeared perfect, and it was. We had a superb night Bruno Mars certainly knows how to put on a show! If you are visiting the O2 arena the location of the Sunborn Yacht Hotel is ideal.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

The ExCel is literally next door and the O2 arena can be reached easily either by the Emirates Cable Car or DLR/Tube to North Greenwich. We discovered that you could save money on all transport if you used a contactless bank card, paying cash was always more expensive, so if you have one use it.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

There are restaurants in very close proximity to the hotel and also a Nisa local and Tesco Express. Rather than paying the expensive bar prices at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel, we bought a bottle of wine and some snacks from here which we enjoyed in our room!

The location is ok for exploring central London too but can take a little while to get to other areas via the DLR. Take this into consideration when planning your trip to London.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel

We really enjoyed our stay at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel , a floating hotel which is a unique idea, and it really is perfect for a special treat.

Afternoon Tea at Sunborn Yacht Hotel London

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

After reading the reviews, I was in two minds to cancel this afternoon tea. However, when we arrived we could see they were Covid complaint. We got seated outside, the weather was amazing, and such a beautiful yacht hotel. The waiters and waitresses were great!... The afternoon tea was lovely and fresh, the sandwiches, cakes and scones were beautiful! The scones were baked freshly, and tasted divine. The cocktail was lush!! Ordered another one. The only downside was that it was a little busier than normal, so service was a little slow. In conclusion it was great, lovely experience and definitely worth the money!! More

Came here for an afternoon tea on Saturday for a birthday. Easy to book online. The venue itself is lovely and unique, feels very grand walking through the reception. There were only a few tables plus us when we arrived. Service was very slow and... we had to ask for extra plates, apart from bringing the initial menu over, during the few hours we were there, none of the many waiters asked if we needed anything. We had to get their attention to ask for extra drinks and the bill and to then actually pay the bill. So overall not very attentive but we did appreciate being able to sit there for a quite a while after we had finished our food. The food itself was great and plenty of it. More

Lovely spot for afternoon tea on a beautiful day, I was served by Hassan on 14/09. He was lovely, helped and always made sure we got a great service. He was on point and very understanding. He knew exactly how to meet to our dietary... requirements. The afternoon tea I feel could have been better, especially the finger sandwiches were basic. Also the presentation was better in the pictures. When served on the day it was different in presentation. I have tried out many afternoon tea spots and can say the taste of the food wasn’t to the best. However the atmosphere and service was good. More

So disappointed with our visit for afternoon tea. This was a special birthday treat and we were both so looking forward to it. The venue is dull. You could be sitting anywhere other than on a 'luxury yacht'. You couldn't see out of the windows... due to them being dirty! As for the food - the sandwiches consisted of smoked salmon on white bread? Egg & onion brioche buns? The other sandwiches, I couldn't tell you what they contained as the contents were non-descript. The sandwiches had just come out of the fridge so were icy cold. The scones looked appealing but when cut in half the middle was undercooked lump of dough. Tea did not come round - we had to ask for extra plates and ordered two drinks which 12.5% service charge was added to! No one came over and asked if everything was alright or whether we needed anything, the whole time, four members of staff stood chatting looking at the Reception PC. There was one poor waitress running around, serving guests and clearing tables. I have also emailed Sunborn but they do not have the courtesy to reply. More

We visited here for an afternoon tea for a family treat whilst we were staying in London for a mini break. The yacht looked absolutely incredible. The foyer area was breathtaking, a large chandelier surrounded by two spiraling staircases either side. We were ably assisted... from the start of our experience and taken to our table overlooking the dock area of the Thames. We didn't have too long to wait for our afternoon tea. The food itself was more than ample, four finger sandwiches and a mini-brioche roll. Two fruit scones and four other cakes complete on a three tiered china tray. We opted for a champagne cocktail option, which was a great accompaniment to the food that was served. We were also given a variety of options for tea, ranging from the usual English breakfast, darjeeling, Earl Grey etc. Our waiter was always on hand to answer our questions and was very passionate about their job. We left there feeling full and satisfied and knowing that when we return to the capital for a break that we will definitely consider staying at the Sunborn Yacht Hotel. More

Booked as a birthday gift for husband and would not go again! Business hotel full of people going to Excel Centre next door! Breakfast a joke, queues for tables, even at 9.15 as business clients in..great to get away from work for leisure and listen... to business people talking load of bull!! Rooms tired and old fashioned..could not go out on balcony as it was full of water, from rain but no drainage to let it out 🙄..paid extra £20 a night for river view. Breakfast 3 choices given, 1 cereal..no fruit. Shame one floor not kept for business, inc breakfast! Gibraltor Sunborn so amazing compared to this one..modern, more facilities. Staff seemed pushed and rushed! Not a good experience😑. More

Enjoyable experience for my birthday. Typical cream tea fare with sandwiches, scones and cake etc. tasted freshly made. Lovely surroundings with a sense of luxury and fabulous views. The lady who served us ( small anchor tattoo on hand) was lovely and a great credit... to the hotel. All in all a super treat from my other half. Booked via a voucher so didn’t pay full price which would of made it too expensive. More

I booked afternoon tea with a Wowcher as it was my friends birthday and I wanted to do something different, the yacht it’s self was very nice on entering, we was shown to our table and given a complimentary cocktail which was an Aperol spritz... and it was very nice , then the food arrived which was a nice selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes all very nice and fresh and unlimited tea or coffee. They even put a chocolate ‘ happy birthday’ on the cakes. We sat outside on the deck to drink our tea which had a lovely view of the river, the cable cars, O2 and people doing watersports in the distance. The staff were very attentive and polite. Overall a very nice experience and definitely would go again More

Your staff dealt with an unreasonable and rude customer in a gracious and professional manner. She was arrogant and did not deserve the apologies and attention you afforded her. The afternoon tea was exactly as advertised with a good range of sandwiches and desserts, flavours... of tea and desserts. Staff were extremely helpful and allowed us to see the upper deck. You created a relaxed atmosphere and nothing was too much to ask. More

So it was out first time out since the pandemic and it’s been tough few months working in the Nhs. We booked the afternoon tea which was £35 and was a nice way of getting together . Unfortunately when the bill came it was much... more than expected. The waiter did not give us a wine list which in hindsight we should have asked for. The waiter could have advised us the champagne afternoon tea would have been a better option as £48 for a bottle of Prosecco seems a of money to us. Also the waiter served it and it didn’t go round so he said would we like another which we did. Had we known we would never of needed another bottle and really the waiter could have made it go round. After explaining to a very rude unapologetic gentleman that came to the table we realised we were wasting our time. We should have asked for a wine menu and will remember this in the future. We hoped to stay over on the yacht next time but certainly will not after this experience. More

I took my 82 year old mum for afternoon tea on the Sunborn Yacht based near London's Excel Centre. We were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather for November, it was bright and fresh. We were able to choose our own seats and chose one... by the window and were able to see magnificent views of the Thames, sea birds, The O2 and the cable cars. Our every need/wish was catered for by really friendly and helpful staff. We both had different food requirements and it was all respectfully catered for without any fuss. The sandwiches/cakes were amazing and we enjoyed several hours chatting and were not under any pressure to vacate our table by staff. We were even allowed to take the cakes home that we didn't eat in a lovely box! We will definitely be back and would totally recommend. A little pricey, but I got a deal on a voucher website, but worth every penny. If I have to make one criticism, it is that before visiting I asked where was the closest car park, and was just told to park at Excel. I would have benefitted from them telling me to park in the orange zone 1 or 2 to be at the right end for a shorter walk with my elderly mum. Also the journey on foot from car park to hotel was a little awkward, unless I just went the wrong way, so some signage from the car parks would be advantageous. More

Was really looking forward to the afternoon tea but came away feeling underwhelmed. It's a lovely venue and the staff were friendly but they were the only good points. I assumed the food would be freshly made but when it arrived it didn't seem very... fresh. Some of the items weren't as stated on the menu so we were unsure of exactly what they were. Other guests were able to swap and change items from the menu but we weren't told this was possible so just accepted what was given. Although the staff were helpful on arrival they disappeared once the food was served so I had to try to get their attention and call them over several times. I expected the staff to be more attentive. I bought the afternoon tea from Groupon so was just glad I hadn't paid full price. More

What an experience! My sister and I visited Sunborn Yacht for a phenomenal afternoon tea. From entering the reception area, we were greeted by the happy, helpful members of staff who pointed us in the right direction of the afternoon tea area. We were then... waited on by a lovely, young lady (Mica) who made sure we had everything we needed and more. During our visit, the manager (Sarwar) assisted us with our voucher issue ensuring we had a stress free and enjoyable afternoon tea. I believe the photo of our food speaks of itself 😍 I would highly recommend visiting and will definitely be going again. More

We have had many afternoon teas in the past & this one by far is definitely our favourite. Firstly all the staff were very friendly, welcoming & helpful. When asked a member of staff about the yacht they gave us lots of information about it,... was very knowledgeable. Which was amazing obviously not just a job to them they were very passionate about it. The afternoon tea was fantastic, a variety of sandwiches, scones & cakes/desserts. Was asked what type of tea we would like, not just one to choose from. The sandwiches, scones cakes & tea tasted lovely. A decent amount of food & drink for an afternoon tea. The setting was beautiful. Very pleasurable afternoon. The yacht itself is beautiful, we only got to see the restaurant, reception, toilets & deck but these were stunning. Would definitely go again & next time to stay on the yacht too. Truly amazing afternoon & not rushed. More

An uncomfortable experience from beginning to end. My friends and I were made to feel unwanted by the racist manager running the restaurant. He purposefully told servers to not serve us, indirectly blamed us for being seated at a table that we didn’t even select... ourselves, spoke down to us, and in general gave us the impression that he didn’t want us there. He was extremely demeaning and belittling in how he spoke to us and made us feel like we were not allowed to ask any questions. He specifically told servers to prioritise the tables nearby, all of which were seated with white customers, and to not bother with our table at all. He told servers to not provide my pregnant friend with a water refill, claiming that “they’ll just keep asking for more so don’t give it to them”. He made snide remarks when we wanted to confirm that our booking was for the correct number of people, implying that we were being absurd to want to ensure that we’d not be overcharged for an error on their end. This shouldn’t have been a surprise considering that he wrongly assumed we’d pay with a coupon the minute he saw our faces anyway. The cost does not match the experience in the slightest. Please don’t waste your money, there are better places where you can get afternoon tea and you won’t get treated poorly based on your race or religion. The only thing that smelled worse than the lingering sewage stink, was the manager’s attitude. More

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.
