Sunken but not stirred.

Footage captured the calamitous moment that a massive superyacht named “007” sank — with five passengers inside — in Greece

The maritime disaster occurred Friday night after the 160-foot vessel, which reportedly sails under a British flag but is owned by a Swiss businessman, experienced a GPS malfunction off Kythos Island, SWNS reported. This reportedly prompted the captain to bring it closer to shore than was advisable.

As a result, the James Bond-themed luxury boat hit the rocks, and began taking on water with five passengers inside.

“In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than 10 meters depth — and that’s how the ship got to that position,” explained a boat owner who witnessed the catastrophe.

Accompanying footage, uploaded to YouTube, shows the swanky vessel, which sports a helipad, lying half-sunken on its side around 50 feet from the nearby Kolona Beach.

The pleasure cruiser hit the rocks off Kythos Island, Greece at around 11pm on Friday.

Thankfully, all five passengers were rescued and transported to safety before the “007” sank. “No people were hurt,” described the aforementioned eyewitness. “The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night.”

Rescuers also erected an anti-pollution perimeter in the area, although there was reportedly “no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery,” the bystander said.

The luxury vessel boasted a helipad, five cabins including a master suite, and other features befitting its James Bond namesake.

Local authorities will launch a probe into the sinking of the “007,” which was delivered in 2006 by the Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht, but whose owner remains unknown.

Along with a helipad, the superyacht reportedly boasts five cabins, including a master suite, and can reportedly sleep ten people.

This isn’t the first time a luxury vessel has visited Davy Jones’ locker of late. Last month, heart-pounding footage emerged of a 130-foot superyacht capsizing and sinking stern-first into the water off the Italian coast.

In February, a Ukrainian man was arrested for partially sinking his Russian tycoon boss’s $7.7 million luxury super yacht in Spain in protest over the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

007 superyacht sinks in greece

Salvage operation underway for grounded 49m superyacht 007 in Greece

A salvage operation is underway to remove the 49-metre Aegean Yacht 007  from her current resting place in the waters of Kythnos, in the Cyclades island chain in Greece.  The yacht was hoisted into an upright position in the early hours of March 21, and a post by the mayor of Kythnos, Mr Stamatios Garderis, said "it's a matter of hours to remove 007 ". The salvage operation began on March 6.

Prior to the removal, the semi-submerged superyacht had been in the same spot since she ran aground and listed in the late hours of  September 2 2022. It is understood that the incident occurred when the yacht struck an underwater obstacle as a result of a failure in the navigation system and began to take on water. Allegedly, she was then deliberately grounded to avoid sinking in deep water.

The local Coast Guard confirmed she was resting on shallow rocks around 15 metres from the shoreline.

Authorities were quick to contain any potential pollution or debris within a floating sea wall but the extent of the damage to the local area is not yet known. At the time of the incident, five passengers were safely rescued from the yacht.

007 was delivered in 2006 by Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht as a 32 metre yacht. She has been extended twice since delivery, bringing her total LOA up to 49 metres.

The fate of the superyacht is still not known.

James Bond-Themed Superyacht Called '007' Sinks Within Yards of Greek Beach

"In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore," a boat owner who watched the event unfold said of the captain's actions

Five passengers aboard a superyacht named in honor of British superspy James Bond had to be rescued after it capsized and began sinking yards away from a Greek beach Friday.

The 160-foot superyacht named "007" experienced a GPS malfunction around 50 feet from the beaches of Kolona Bay on the Mediterranean island of Kythnos, SWNS reported.

"They say that the captain had some depth problem and he hit the bottom," a boat owner said about the vessel's captain, per SWNS

"In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than 10 meters depth — and that's how the ship got to that position." Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the incident, added SWNS.

"The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night," the local continued, per SWNS.

"Next morning they put an antipollution perimeter," the boat owner continued. "It appears there was no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery."

According to SuperYacht Times , the "007" was developed by Aegean Yachts in 2006 and can accommodate up to 10 people. It also has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

In true James Bond style, however, the identity of the owner has not been revealed.

The sinking of the 007 follows the demise of a 131-foot superyacht named My Saga, which capsized nine miles off the coast of Catanzaro, Italy in August.

Shocking footage released by the Italian coast guard showed the vessel sinking stern-first near the Catanzaro Marina.

According to the BBC , "the Italian coast guard rescued all nine people on board – four passengers and five crew. The outlet reported the ship was heading from Gallipoli to Milazzo.

An investigation of the incident is ongoing and it is still unclear what caused the yacht to sink.

A superyacht named 007 has sunk after running aground off an island on Friday.

The 49-metre long vessel hit rocks off the Greek island of Kythnos and was seen lying on its side in the sea after the five passengers on board were rescued.

The James Bond-themed luxury yacht, which has a helipad, was seen lying semi-submerged about 15 metres from Kolona Beach, The Sun reports.

The boat hit rocks around 11pm on Friday and water then poured in as rescuers scrambled to get passenger on to another vessel and ashore.

The GPS reportedly malfunctioned and according to a local boat owner, the skipper then brought the vessel closer to shore.

“In trying not to be sunk, he sailed closer to shore, in less than ten metres depth, and that’s how the ship got to that position,” he said.

“No people were hurt. The coastguard was immediately aware and sent help in the night. Next morning they put up an anti-pollution perimeter.

“It appears there was no diesel leakage or damage to the scenery.”

The boat sails under a British flag but is owned by a Swiss businessman.

Anti-pollution barriers have been put in place in case of fuel leakage.

Local authorities will now conduct an investigation into the incident.

The 007 was delivered in 2006 by Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yacht but who owns it remains a mystery.

It has five cabins, including a master suite, and can sleep ten people.

The vessel was originally 32 metre long and called Royal Enterprise but underwent an extension.

It comes after the 39-metre superyacht My Saga sank off the coast of Italy after it was battered by a storm.

Nine people were rescued from the submerging vessel on Saturday as it sunk in the Gulf of Squillace, off the coast of Catanzaro.

Dramatic footage shows the superyacht on the water for a few moments before it completely sinks stern-first.

An investigation to determine what caused the vessel to sink has been launched.

Video: 49m superyacht 007 sinks in Greece

BY APB Staff on 6 Sep 2022

The yacht capsized on Friday, although it remains unclear how the 49-metre vessel ran aground

Superyacht 007  has sunk off the coast of Greece, according to the local coast guard. Footage has been circulating on social media throughout the weekend of the stricken yacht, which is lying on its side in shallow waters off Kolona Bay in Kythnos.

The 49-metre vessel ran aground on Friday evening and reportedly took on water before capsizing. Reports say 007 is currently semi-submerged and awaiting recovery around 15 metres off the coast. The coast guard says that five passengers were rescued, and there are no reported injuries. Search and rescue teams have installed a boom around the yacht to prevent pollution from spreading around the local environment.

In a statement, the Hellenic Coast Guard says: “In the evening hours of Friday, the Port Authority of Kythnos was informed by the Unified Center for Coordination of Search and Rescue LS-EL.AKT. that the yacht 007 of the flag of Great Britain has run aground in the sea area of Kolona Bay, Kythnos with five foreign passengers.

The E/P vessel DELTA II T. Saronicou 4760 rushed to the area with a member of the relevant Port Authority on board, where it located the above semi-submerged T/C, at a distance of approximately 15 meters from the western side of the sandy beach of Kolona Bay. The passengers, all in good health, transferred to the auxiliary boat and were then transferred to the port of Merichas in Kythnos.”

There are some conflicting reports about how the yacht ran aground in the first place. An analysis by eSysman suggests that the captain may have chosen to ground the vessel after it hit rocks, to prevent it from sinking under the water. Meanwhile, Greek outlet Cyclades24 suggests that the GPS failed, leading the boat to run aground in the shallows before breaching and taking on water.

A towing company is now on the scene in Kythnos, and is establishing how to safely remove the superyacht from the scene.

007 was launched as Amazon A by Turkish shipyard Aegean Yacht , in 2006. The vessel was originally 32m long but has been extended to 49m in a series of modifications, which included an extra deck and helipad.

In August, superyacht M/Y Saga sank off the coast of northern Italy , after the crew reported the vessel taking on water at the stern.

Dramatic footage of the scene shared by the  coast guard shows the 39.4-metre superyacht tilting heavily to starboard, as the waves crash against the decks. And, in June, a Custom Line Navetta 26 superyacht sank off the coast of Seferihisar, in western Turkey, after taking on water.

49m motor yacht 007   has been reported sunk in Greece. The incident occurred near the Greek island of Kythnos over the weekend of 3/4th September. Local news outlets have reported that the Syros Port Authority has attended the scene and no injuries or loss of life have been recorded. The vessel apparently hit rocks after navigating into the bay at night.

The below clip shows the vessel in its semi-submerged state, with MARPOL anti-pollution barriers surrounding it. It has been reported by local media that it is not leaking pollutants at this stage.

A full statement from the Greek Coast Guard says:

In the evening hours of Friday, the Port Authority of Kythnos received information from the Unified Center for the Coordination of Search and Rescue Operations Λ.Σ.-ΕΛ.ΑΚΤ. five foreign passengers. The vessel Ε/Π σκάφος “ΔΕΛΤΑ ΙΙ” Τ.Σαρωνικού 4760 rushed to the area with an employee of the relevant port authority on board, where it found the above vessel half-submerged, at a distance of about 15 meters from the western side of the sandy beach of Kolonas Bay. The passengers, all in good health, were transferred to a support boat and then taken to the port of Merihas. The port of Kythnos is conducting a preliminary investigation, and no pollution of the marine environment has been observed since the incident.

007 was delivered in 2006 by Bodrum-based shipyard Aegean Yachts, at an LOA of 32m. Subsequently, it underwent multiple refits to extend its LOA to 49m. None of these extensions were undertaken at the Aegean yard.

If this were a real James Bond scenario, it would be a darn good one. A James Bond-themed superyacht, aptly called 007 and restyled to resemble something the world-famous spy would sail, has been refloated, six full months after it was intentionally run aground.

yacht 007 sinking

On September 2, 2022, 007 ran aground off the coast of Greece, in Kolona Bay, some 15 meters (49.2 feet) from the beach. Initial reports said that some kind of navigation error had steered the vessel off course, so it hit rocks when it entered shallow waters. The hull was pierced and it started taking on water, so, to prevent it from sinking into deeper waters, the captain ran it aground.

After that, 007 tilted to the port side and eventually capsized, ending up on its side. It spent the next six months that way, with authorities seemingly in no rush to salvage it, though they did put up floating walls to keep pollution under control. As of this moment, the exact damages to the ecosystem are unknown.

yacht 007 sinking

On March 6, Greek authorities began the salvage operation, which concluded on March 22, with 007 refloated. If this happened in a James Bond movie, it would probably be the scene before the end credits, and Bond himself (Bond, James Bond) would make an appearance alongside the lady of the moment, and they would kiss as the camera would zoom out on the beautiful vessel, back in an upright position.

But this is no movie, and the situation continues to remain very strange, beyond the fact that authorities waited half a year to remove a vessel that posed a danger to the picturesque area.

yacht 007 sinking

By the looks of things, 007 has been abandoned by the owner, a millionaire businessman who was also the captain, amid claims that he deliberately ran it aground for other reasons than those having to do with the danger of sinking. One particular report, included in the second video available at the bottom of the page, says that he did it because the ship was no longer seaworthy and may have had severe balance issues brought on by repeated modifications to the hull.

yacht 007 sinking

Delivered in 2006 by Aegean Yachts as Royal Enterprise, 007 was initially a 32-meter (105-foot) that was modified extensively in subsequent refits. When it ran aground, it was 49 meters (160 feet) long and featured all the trappings of larger superyachts, including a touch-and-go helipad and an additional deck that wasn’t in the original design by Yavuz Mete.

According to the latest reports in the Greek media, the millionaire owner has been given one month to recover his superyacht, now that it’s been refloated, after which he will be liable to huge fines. Whether he’s actually coming back for it, after it spent half a year half-underwater, remains to be seen

Aegean superyacht 007 sinks near Kythnos (watch video)

The Greek media outlet Cyclades24 reported that the superyacht 007 ran aground on Friday evening

The sinking of the 49-metre Aegean superyacht 007 in Greece was reported this morning. The incident, which took place last night and into this morning, occurred off of the Greek island of Kythnos and it appears from imagery that the yacht has now been stabilised by the Coast Guard in a almost fully submerged state.

The Greek media outlet Cyclades24 reported that the superyacht 007 ran aground on Friday evening, causing an inflow of water that gradually tilted the vessel. The Coast Guard answered mayday calls and discovered the vessel in a semi-submerged state, though the five passengers onboard were not in danger and were quickly rescued.

The Greek Coast Guard issued the following statement: “In the evening hours of Friday, the Port Authority of Kythnos was informed by the Unified Center for Coordination of Search and Rescue LS-EL.AKT., that the yacht “007” of the flag of Great Britain, has run aground in the sea area of Kolones Bay, Kythnos with five foreign passengers.”

“The E/P vessel “DELTA II” T.Saronicou 4760 rushed to the area with a member of the relevant Port Authority on board, where it located the above semi-submerged T/C, at a distance of approximately 15 meters from the western side of the sandy beach of Kolona bay. The passengers, all in good health, transferred to the auxiliary boat and were then transferred to the port of “Mericha” Kythnos.”

Infamous boat-sinking orcas spotted hundreds of miles from where they should be, baffling scientists

Orcas that attack and sink boats in southwestern Europe have been spotted circling a vessel in Spain, hundreds of miles from where they should currently be. And scientists can't explain why.

Orcas swimming near a boat.

Orcas that have been terrorizing boats in southwest Europe since 2020 were recently spotted circling a vessel in Spain for the first time this year. The close encounter, which took place hundreds of miles from where the cetaceans should currently be, hints that this group is switching up its tactics — and scientists have no idea why.

The Iberian subpopulation of orcas ( Orcinus orca ) is a small group of around 40 individuals that lives off the coast of Spain and Portugal, as well as in the Strait of Gibraltar — a narrow body of water between southern Spain and North Africa that separates the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

Since 2020, individuals from this group have been approaching and occasionally attacking boats , sometimes causing serious damage to the vessels and even sinking them. The most recent sinking occurred on Oct. 31, 2023 , but the orcas have sent at least three other boats to the bottom of the sea . However, no humans have been injured or killed.

Related: Orcas are learning terrifying new behaviors. Are they getting smarter?

On April 10, three of these orcas were spotted persistently swimming near a large yacht off the coast of Malpica in Galicia, northern Spain, local news site Diario de Pontevedra reported . The trio did not attack the vessel, but local conservation group Orca Ibérica GTOA, which has been closely monitoring the Iberian subpopulation, warned boaters to "take caution when passing through" the area.

The encounter was surprising as the orcas don't normally venture this far north until mid to late summer, Spanish science news site gCiencia reported .

"Theoretically, they are in the Strait [of Gibraltar] in the spring and should reach the north [of Spain] at the end of the summer," Alfredo López Fernandez , a biologist at the University of Aveiro in Portugal and representative of the Atlantic Orca Working Group, told gCiencia in the translated article. "There is an absolute lack of knowledge" about why this is happening, he added.

A map showing how far the orcas have had to swim to get to Spain

Other orcas have also been spotted further east along the Spanish coastline toward Biscay and further south in Portuguese waters over the last few weeks, gCiencia reported. The orcas normally only enter these areas to follow tuna, their preferred prey. It is unclear if the tuna have arrived early this year.

So far, the orcas have not attacked any boats. But López Fernandez believes this could start within the next few months. However, he says it is hard to predict when and where these encounters will occur.

Scientists still don't know exactly why these attacks started. Some researchers believe that the first attacks may have been perpetrated by a lone female named "White Gladis," who may have been pregnant when she started harassing the boats . But regardless of how it started, the behavior quickly spread among the group.

So far, at least 16 different individuals have attacked boats. Eyewitnesses also claim to have seen orcas teaching other individuals how to attack boats, with an emphasis on attacking vessels' rudders to immobilize them.

A juvenile orca swims away from the yacht with a large piece of fiberglass from the rudder in its mouth.

There is also a suggestion that the behavior may have spread outside the population after a boat in Scotland was attacked by a different group in June 2023. However, it is impossible to prove this attack was connected to the others.

— How often do orcas attack humans?

— How orcas gained their 'killer' reputation

As the number of attacks has increased, boat owners have started using firecrackers and even guns to scare off the orcas, gCiencia reported. However, scientists like López Fernandez have urged for restraint because the subpopulation is "in danger of extinction."

"We want to transmit real and truthful information," López Fernandez said. "We're not going to hide that the orcas can touch the boats and sometimes break something, but we also have to be aware that what we have in front of us is not a monster."

14 people rescued after boat sinks off Southern California coast

People aboard a quickly sinking boat in Southern California jumped in the water as rescue boats arrived Sunday.

Fourteen people were rescued after the 41-foot Carver sunk off Newport Beach, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CN1ZOgZnIeN

The rescue happened near the entrance of Newport Beach Harbor around 2:45 p.m., the sheriff's department said, and when harbor patrol arrived the boat was being towed by a good Samaritan but sinking fast.

Harbor Patrol, lifeguards and other boats in the area saved the 14 people. The cause of the sinking is under investigation, the sheriff's department said. No injuries were reported.

Newport Beach Lifeguard Battalion Chief Brian O’Rourke told the Orange County Register newspaper that the boat was riding low in the water near the entrance of the channel and when rescue boats showed up, “they just jumped off in fear of their lives.”

The boat sank in around 100 feet of water, he told the newspaper.

In better days, passengers of the Newport Princess enjoyed fine dining and champagne while the 62-foot-long Mississippi-style paddleboat toured Newport Harbor.

The vessel could carry as many as 150 people aboard its three decks, which were lined with ornate white guardrails and sat above a black, wooden hull.

The 77-year-old boat’s service as a whimsical venue for weddings and corporate events ended amidst the emergence of COVID-19 and the mandates the illness brought with it, said Jack Wall of Al Larson Boat Shop, a shipyard that serviced vessels owned by Electra Cruises .

The boat, which apparently has a new owner, now appears doomed, with it sinking into the Pacific Ocean off of Long Beach’s coast on Tuesday, Dec. 14, during this week’s storm.

The Newport Princess was a 62-foot-long boat that sank near...

On Wednesday, its upper deck was still visible from shore, with the boat resting in somewhat shallow water.

Nobody was aboard the boat when it began to take on water, said officials with the Marine Safety Division of the Long Beach Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard.

To keep other ships from running into the vessel, the Coast Guard marked off the area with buoys, Petty Officer Aidan Cooney said. Officials have been in contact with its owner, who is responsible for getting it out of the water.

“Even though the vessel has the capacity to hold 750 gallons of fuel, reports state that there were less than 100 gallons aboard,” Cooney said. “So the environmental impact isn’t too severe.”

Piles of lifejackets with the words “Newport Princess” printed on them, chairs and other debris that had been aboard the vessel littered the shoreline after the boat sank, Long Beach Marine Safety Chief Gonzalo Medina said. Its owner sent a team to pick up the items.

The owner of the Newport Princess, pinched by COVID-19’s restrictions, sold it to someone who kept it moored for most of 2021 at Island White, an oil platform about a mile off of Long Beach’s coast, Wall said.

Arrangements were being made with a salvage company to retrieve and demolish the Newport Princess, Cooney and Medina said. Officials expect that process to begin by the end of this week, and it could cost the boat’s owner $30,000 to $50,000, Medina said.

He wasn’t entirely surprised to learn that it had sunk.

“It was at the oil platform probably because, like most other boats out there, the owner couldn’t find anywhere else to put it,” Wall said. “And a lot of those don’t get maintenance, so every so often we hear about one sinking out there.”

The Coast Guard and Long Beach’s Marine Safety Division were working to determine what caused the Newport Princess to go under. It’s unclear how the boat took on water to push it into the Pacific and if it had anything to do with the storm that passed through Southern California on Tuesday.

“It would have been unlikely for any seaworthy vessel to sink in a storm of that magnitude,” Medina said.

A brief history of boating, shipping accidents off the coast of Ventura County

yacht 007 sinking

The waters off the coast of Ventura County have experienced numerous boating accidents – some fatal – over the years. This week's fire aboard and subsequent sinking of the Santa Barbara-based Conception counts among the region's worst.

As of Wednesday, 33 bodies had been recovered, but 34 passengers in total are presumed dead from the dive boat blaze early Monday near Santa Cruz Island.

Here's a list of some other local maritime incidents:

  • 1853: a wooden steamer, the Winfield Scott, sinks, leaving 400 passengers stranded on Anacapa Island.
  • 1952: The Del Rio, a commercial fishing vessel, catches fire and sinks off the coast of Anacapa Island.
  • April 13, 1970: The La Jenelle, a 465-foot-long luxury liner, sinks off the Oxnard coastline. No fatalities.
  • April 17, 1997: Three men die when their Ventura-based commercial fishing boat, the Lindy Jane, sinks off San Nicholas Island.
  • Jan. 3, 1999: One man dies and another is presumed dead after their 40-foot outrigger canoe sinks in frigid waters near Channel Islands Harbor.
  • Dec. 23, 2005: A Camarillo teen presumably drowns when the 14-foot open boat he is riding in with two siblings and their father capsizes near the mouth of the Santa Clara River between Ventura and Oxnard.
  • July 10, 2006: Two men die when the commercial fishing vessel they are on capsizes.
  • Aug. 20, 2011: Two people are injured - one critically - as their boat is docking in Port Hueneme.
  • March 10, 2012: Four passengers die when their 24-foot outboard motor-powered boat capsizes near Santa Cruz Island.
  • July 29, 2015: A commercial fishing vessel, the Ferrigno Boy, strikes the Ventura Harbor Boatyard travel lift pier, causing significant damage to the pier, but no injuries.
  • Oct. 21, 2015: Three people safely evacuate a 36-foot burning boat between Santa Cruz and Anacapa islands. The boat sinks.
  • Jan. 10, 2016: A commercial fishing vessel, Day Island, runs aground on Ventura Beach after the captain falls asleep while operating the boat. No injuries.
  • Febr. 26, 2016: One man dies after a commercial fishing vessel, Miss Jacinda, sinks 17 miles northwest of Ventura.
  • April 10, 2016: A 50-foot fishing vessel hits the south end of the jetty at the mouth of Ventura Harbor, partially sinking. Three people are rescued from the boat, none with serious injuries.
  • May 31, 2016: A 30-foot fishing vessel runs aground at Channel Islands Harbor.  No injuries.

Though not a maritime accident, on Jan. 31, 2000, Alaska Airlines Flight 261 crashes off the Ventura County coast, killing 83 passengers and five crew members.

Six people rescued from River Ouse in York after boat crash

  • North Yorkshire

Courtsey York mix

Six people had to be rescued from York's River Ouse after their boat sank following a crash with a cruise vessel.

The group were on a small hire boat which capsized after colliding with the larger vessel near Lendal Bridge on Wednesday 24 April.

Pictures from the scene show life rings being thrown into the river as the smaller boat sank to the bottom.

City Cruises, which operated both boats, said its staff helped the rescue operation.

A spokesperson said: "As a result of the collision, the self-drive boat capsized and six individuals found themselves in the water.

"Our dedicated City Cruises team acted swiftly to ensure the safety of all individuals involved. Immediate rescue efforts were initiated and all individuals were successfully rescued from the water with no injuries reported."

Emergency crews were called to the scene.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said six people were checked. One was taken to hospital for treatment.

North Yorkshire police said all six had been recovered from the water by the time officers arrived and were "safe and well".

City Cruises said the safety of passengers and crew was of the "utmost importance". It has begun an investigation into the incident.

Hokkaido boat operator probe ongoing two years after fatal sinking

A man offers flowers in Shari, Hokkaido, Tuesday for the victims of the fatal sinking of a sightseeing boat off the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido two years ago.

Investigations into the operator of the Kazu I sightseeing tour boat remain ongoing as Tuesday marked two years since the fatal sinking of the vessel off the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido.

The accident occurred on the afternoon of April 23, 2022, after the Kazu I left Utoro Port in the town of Shari on the peninsula the same day. Twenty people, including passengers and crew, have been confirmed dead, while six passengers are still missing. The Kazu I was salvaged in May 2022 after being found on the seabed off the peninsula.

In a report released last September, the Japan Transport Safety Board, an affiliate of the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry, said that seawater that entered the hatch on the bow deck led to the sinking. The board also said Shiretoko Yuransen did not have a proper safety management system, pointing out that the company lacked necessary personnel for safe navigation and that its maintenance work for the vessel and communications equipment was insufficient.

Following the incident, the coast guard raided the company's office and other places, and questioned Katsurada on a voluntary basis. But the bar for prosecution is high as the captain of the ship, who was believed to know most about the situation at the time, died in the accident.

"We have to work on the details, such as conducting experiments on how ships sink," to prepare for (Katsurada's) possible indictment and trial, a person familiar with the investigations said.

Meanwhile, the families of victims are moving to hold Katsurada responsible in civil lawsuits.

The parents of Akira Soyama, a Kazu I crew member who died at age 27 in the incident, filed a lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court in March last year for damages from Katsurada and Shiretoko Yuransen, claiming that the accident happened because the president had the boat sail although people around him advised him not to do so.

The Katsurada side argued that he did not force the boat to depart and that the accident could have been avoided had the boat captain decided to turn around and return to the port.

Thirty relatives of Kazu I passengers plan to file a group lawsuit against Katsurada and Shiretoko Yuransen at the Sapporo District Court as early as next month.

The petitioners will include relatives of missing passengers, who are slated to join the lawsuit after taking procedures to have their loved ones recognized as dead, attorneys for the group said.

"The more days that pass, the more I feel frustrated," a 67-year-old man whose eldest son, one of the passengers, died in the incident.

The man said he is angered by the fact that coast guard authorities have still been unable to build a case against Katsurada, saying, "They are constantly slow."

The father plans to join the group lawsuit to "make (Katsurada) understand that he did a terrible thing," he said, noting that the president has never offered an apology for the accident.

A man and his two dogs were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard in Oregon after their vessel lost power and began to sink.

The Pacific Northwest division of the agency said Monday in a post on X that rescue teams responded to reports about a boat that had lost power and was taking on water Sunday near Whaleshead Beach just north of the Oregon-California state line.

Rescuers retrieved the man and his two dogs using a helicopter. Video footage shows rescuers hoisting the life jacket-wearing dogs up into the helicopter using a large basket, offering comforting pets when needed.

The man was taken to a local EMS but it's unclear if he was injured or needed medical attention.

A Coast Guard official told USA TODAY that the vessel was actively taking on water during the rescue, but that it hasn't yet been determined what caused the problem. It's also unclear if the boat ended up sinking.
