Explore the Luxurious World of New England Yachting

New England has always been a favored holiday spot, with its appeal now best explored through yacht charters. The region’s allure was established in the 19th century when the elite vacationed in grand mansions, disguised as “summer cottages”. Icons like John F. Kennedy and JD Rockefeller once reveled in the summer bliss of Newport’s sailing scene. Presently, Newport, along with Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, continues to draw celebrities and yachting enthusiasts to its quintessential American summer landscape.

A Mosaic of Cultural Riches and Coastal Splendor

The region is a treasure trove of cultural highlights, offering something for everyone, from stunning landscapes to abundant charm and a wide array of sporting activities. The journey begins in Newport, the global yachting capital and historic venue of the America’s Cup, then sails through to the chic shores of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Along the New England coastline, the journey continues past picturesque clapperboard houses, through the historic cruising grounds to Boston and the rocky coastline of Maine. Here, destinations like Acadia National Park beckon sailing yachts and motor yachts to explore its picturesque islands and sandy beaches.

The Quintessence of New England Yachting

In Maine, the allure of whale watching, the signature lobster roll, and the cultural highlights of quaint coastal towns await. The summer charter season sees a flotilla of the world’s most exquisite superyachts and charter yachts making their way through these iconic cruising grounds. From the thrill of water toys and jet skis in the Long Island Sound to the competitive spirit of a regatta charter during the Vineyard Cup, New England yacht charters offer an unmatched blend of luxury, adventure, and cultural enrichment. Whether you’re sailing through the Atlantic Ocean or mooring in the historic harbors of Newport and Sag Harbor, a yacht charter in New England promises a journey filled with unforgettable experiences, blending the region’s natural beauty, nautical heritage, and luxurious comfort.

At times, travelers can find adventure right at your doorstep; this is especially true in the case of New England. Located in the northeastern part of the United States, this unique region is known for its colonial past, Atlantic coastline, stunning beaches, and stunning autumn foliage. New England yacht charters open the door to admire and explore what the waters have to offer. Internationally recognized as one of the best sailing locations globally, New England has over 400 miles of coastline that is steeped in rich maritime heritage that you can discover with sailboat charters in New England.

Newport is America’s yachting capital and is a perfect place for shopping, scenery, and good food. Maritime trade built this colonial town, and most of its 18th-century architectural features can still be seen today, giving this small town its unique edge. Thirty miles off the coast of Cape Cod is the isolated island of Nantucket known for whales, breweries, lighthouses, and fishing. Just west of Nantucket is Martha’s Vineyard, another island, which is curiously not famous for wine. Hop around from island to island with private yacht charters in New England. Instead, it is a popular vacation destination for people wanting to explore its beaches and lush green forests. Maine has over 5,000 miles of coastline and is famous for one particular type of crustacean, the Maine lobster. Although famous for seafood, it is also the home of various harbors and bays waiting to be explored, including Boothbay and Bar Harbour, which offer great shops, fun cafes, and gorgeous scenery to travel with our New England boat charters.

Guide to New England

Steeped in yachting history, colourful culture and unsurpassed natural beauty.

A playground of presidents and poets, the gingerbread towns, enchanting islands and vibrant cities that make up the New England region caters to salty sailors and the elite jet set alike. Its distinctive seasonal changes only enhance its pristine beauty, from dazzling snow-clad winter slopes to the crimson-to-gold riches of autumn.

Tucked into the north eastern corner of the United States, New England comprises six states packed full of historic sites, breath-taking scenery and spectacular coastlines varying from craggy cliffs, desolate dunes and lustrous beaches to pretty fishing villages. World-renowned for being a cruising paradise, a luxury yacht charter vacation could last a lifetime in this quintessential land of plenty.

Known as the ‘Ocean State’ for its fabulous stretches of sandy beaches, Rhode Island is synonymous for luxury yachting and plays host to the world yachting capital of Newport. Home to the America’s Cup , Newport’s deeply indented coast of bays, rivers and pretty coves combined with its rich colonial history, world-class restaurants and boisterous nightlife make it an unmissable part of a New England charter itinerary. Don’t miss the famous annual Newport Jazz festival where music lovers descend onto the town to revel in the summer festivities.

Home to the delectable cruising grounds of Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, the Elizabeth Island and Buzzard’s Bay, Massachusetts is unrivalled in its natural beauty. From the sheltered harbours of Gloucester you can cruise the 40 mile open water passage to Provincetown and discover the quaint charms and miles of sandy bluffs of Cape Cod.

The Green Mountain state of Vermont is a picture perfect scene of heavily forested landscape with a distinctly laid-back atmosphere and charmingly colourful towns; perfect for experiencing the great outdoors in a beautiful setting. Head to the majestic mountains of New Hampshire for fantastic skiing and winter sports opportunities or explore the rugged yet tranquil coastline and inland lakes throughout the summer.

The sinuous coastline of Maine is dotted with rocky islands and iconic striped lighthouses and backed by imposing mountain landscapes where each village seems more enchanting than the next. Enjoy some huge fresh lobster, sumptuous seafood chowder or a warm slice of blueberry pie in one of the charming bistros along the coast while marvelling at the beautiful vistas. For some pure indulgence explore the winding trails of the renowned Connecticut wineries  before stepping back in time to one of the ‘olde worlde’ coastal towns that are nestled between the sandy beaches.

Find Your Perfect Yacht

New england yacht charters.

New England may be less commonly requested than the Caribbean or Mediterranean, but it is a destination not to be missed!

On a charter in New England guests can experience a unique yachting adventure exploring historical, scenic and cultural treasures. New England is also known for its rocky coastline, unique lighthouses, pristine beaches, and dynamic sunsets. Not to be forgotten is access to amazing fresh seafood, lobsta and chowda galore!

Smaller colorful coastal fishing villages and rich cultural cities of America's upper northeast coast will reveal themselves from your yacht charter in a way unseen by train or car. Sail or motor around Martha's Vineyard while enjoying a lobster dinner from the deck of your charter yacht.

Motor and sailing yachts are available in the summer months in New England, and our specialists are experts on how to experience this coastline in the perfect way. It's possible to visit busy harbors with upscale shopping, little "out islands" for peace and tranquility, or both!

Amazing History

New England destinations include those that were once old commercial whaling and merchant trading centers and have now become yachting destinations for the elite (think Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket). From Bar Harbor to Boston, you'll cruise into a wide variety of New England towns and cities steeped in history. And don't forget the yachting capital of New England, Newport! Attractions are many, and each destination is unique. Entertainment ranges from tours of historical sites to experiencing an exciting race on an America's Cup yacht.

New England has so much to offer. Fishing, cultural tours, and outstanding seafood are among the many diversions. Sit back and enjoy the sights as your crew prepares succulent Maine lobster, a bowl of steaming clam chowder, or locally caught fresh fish. Watch as lighthouses and grass-swept sand dunes catch the sea mist.

Maine to Connecticut

From rugged Maine to quaint Connecticut (touching New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island in between), everyone on board will enjoy the views and beautiful backdrops. Even the short distance from Newport, RI to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket provides you with a quintessential New England charter experience. Read our post about New England. >

The romantic ambience of glacier-carved harbors, seafaring history, cobblestoned towns, and countless islands make New England destinations some of the most interesting and rewarding yacht charter cruises in the world. We also include New York's Long Island Sound in our New England category. A popular route is from Newport, RI, to Sag Harbor in the Hamptons. Then use the Long Island Railroad to get to Manhattan!

Motor yachts, mega yachts, and sailing yachts are all available to charter in New England. The best season is arguably summer; although locals may tell you that autumn is better with its cooler temperatures and smaller crowds. Our specialists are New England experts, one of them having cruised this area for many years herself. If you want a truly experienced person helping you plan your vacation, you have come to the right place!

3000 Miles of Coastline

With coastline from the Bay of Fundy to New York City, a yacht charter in New England can be carved from this coastline just for you, whatever your needs and interests. You can't see it all thou in one trip however fast your charter yacht may be! We can help you plan where would be best for your vacation based on your likes and dislikes.

This is the ultimate way to explore the beautiful coastline of New England. Extremely rich in maritime history, New England yacht charters offer a unique yachting experience during the summer months from May to September.

Choose from such destinations as Martha's Vineyard, Bar Harbor, Camden, Boothbay, Nantucket and Newport. For the true history seekers, a yacht charter based around Boston and Cape Cod will make you wish for a longer cruise on your charter yacht. you will be entering harbours you have read about in history books about the settlers and america's path to independance from Great Britain.

Want to be part of the "in" crowd and be seen? The twin forks of Long Island beckon your charter yacht to stop at Sag Harbor or Shelter island. Ashore, "The Hamptons" are merely minutes away by taxi and the south shore beaches are the best around.

Connecticut brings its own destinations such as Mystic and Essex, perhaps visited on your way to New York City. Floating under the Brooklyn Bridge to cruise by the Statue of Liberty on your own crewed charter yacht is an experience to be savored. Explore the Mansions of Newport from the "golden age" or the uniqueness of Martha's Vineyard on your charter - it can be busy and quite all at the same time.

Two Samples Of Charter Cruises in New England

One- boston to maine.

Easy travel to Boston allows you flexibility in arrival. On the first day you could meet your charter yacht downtown; or perhaps boarding your luxury yacht charter would be savored better with a view of the USS Constitution?

Day two might find you on a short passage to Marblehead with its narrow streets echoing a seafaring heritage, or perhaps you'd prefer Salem for some witch hunting!

Day three could mix art and fishing with a visit to Gloucester, home of the fishing fleets made famous in The Perfect Storm as well as a budding artist community.

Day four might see your arrival by motor into Portland, Maine, the southern gateway to Casco Bay. Your yacht charter captain will be sure to point you to the best watering holes in Portland's wonderful restored downtown.

Day five could include a short cruise exploring Casco Bay, or a trip across its mouth to Boothbay, where the local "Lobsta" co-op will be your target for the best of Down East shellfish.

Day six might find you in pretty Castine or the better-known Camden Harbor. The center of town is easily walkable, and you're never out of sight from the harbor. Climb Mt. Battie if you're up for a hike!

Day seven would take you to Bangor, to be whisked away at the airport all too soon at the end of a great yacht charter.

This is just one idea. Your interests and needs allow the ideal cruise to be created and modified just for you.

TWO - Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Newport

Arriving in Boston, your motor yacht charter awaits to take you out past the center of this historic city to Provincetown, first landing place of the Pilgrims in 1620.

Day two can be spent exploring Provincetown's vibrant harbor and the nearby coastal towns.

Day three takes you through the narrow Cape Cod Canal into Buzzards Bay and on to Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard.

Day four the charter yacht's launch takes you into town, perhaps to explore the island by bike or merely to browse the abundance of shops along the streets of Edgartown and Vineyard Haven.

Day five sees your charter yacht arrive in Nantucket, rich in whaling history and now a calmer "out island" to be explored by bike. The numerous small galleries display rich local artwork, and the streets are lined with restored captains' houses from whaling times.

Day six you'll want to spend further exploring Nantucket before you depart towards Newport. Perhaps your charter yacht captain will suggest a quiet anchorage for the night off sleepy Cuttyhunk.

Day seven sees you docked in Newport, Rhode Island, where you can tour restored mansions, walk shop-lined wharves, and take in the harbor scene from a dockside restaurant (or consider a detour to Watch Hill) before your car delivers you to Providence Airport.

Boston Yachting Season

Boston’s yachting season mirrors that of New England; it wakes up in early spring, but doesn’t hit its stride until mid-summer. July and August are the region’s busiest months for crewed yacht charters, with the season stretching into late September.

Throughout the summer and fall, Boston hosts a wide range of yachting events, including regattas and boat shows. Peak season runs from the Fourth of July until late August, and demand for luxury charters is also higher around major events, including the nearby Newport International Boat Show.

Cruising Conditions

Boston is blessed with pleasant spring and summer weather. In July and August temperatures hover in the 70s and 80s, with plenty of cooling winds.

The region is a sailor’s dream. Thanks to the relatively sheltered waters of Massachusetts Bay, Cape Cod Bay, Nantucket Sound and Buzzards Bay, Boston charters are generally met with calm, smooth sailing conditions.

Boston harbor

Boston Yacht Charters: Things to See & Do

Whether you prefer to stay close to beautiful Boston Harbor and explore the city or seek adventure on the high seas, Boston charters are full of excitement. Top attractions and must-do activities include:

See the Red Sox at Fenway

Legendary Fenway Park is the oldest stadium in baseball and has been hosting the Red Sox every summer since 1912. Taking in a game at Fenway is a Boston bucket list experience. One tip: Plan for a pub crawl before or after the game. You’ll find numerous Irish pubs in the neighborhood.

Indulge in Boston’s Dining Scene

Boston is heaven for foodies. And all across the city, you’ll find a wide range of dining experiences, from the exquisite 3 Michelin-star cuisine at Menton, to the lobster roll shacks like Yankee Lobster. Throughout the region, you’ll find the best of the best in seafood: lobster, clam chowder, fish and chips, and clam bakes.

Take a Walk Through History

Boston’s Freedom Trail is a network of churches, museums, and historical markers that tell the history of the American Revolution. From the Old State House, where the Declaration of Independence before it was signed, to Paul Revere’s house, a walk along the trail brings the city’s history to life. You’ll find a variety of self-guided or guided options.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In New England

Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in New England below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on Borrow A Boat with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in [location name] it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.

When searching a geographical area on Borrow A Boat you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailboat: From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced captain.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a captain who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a captain who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Captained Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat rental or yacht charter in New England you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht rental or captained yacht charter.

When using Borrow A Boat you can filter all boat searches to be with or without a captain depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat rental.

Captained Charter: A captained yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the captain, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases captains will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a captain as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can captain these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In New England

If you are on a gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of New England. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of New England, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

Starting a new season of “ Below Deck ” can be similar to returning to summer camp as a kid — you know it’s going to be fun and that you’ll be in the same environment, but some of the people will be different and you’re not quite sure what the vibes will be.

This time around, in particular, feels that way because for the first time in the show’s 11-season run, Captain Lee Rosbach is no longer at the helm. It’s a pivotal moment for a franchise that has become one of the most popular entities in the sprawling universe of reality TV since premiering on Bravo in 2013 . The show’s appeal was built on endless romances between various crew members (“boatmances,” as they came to be known), horrible charter guests and some sort of passive-aggressive fight about how many shackles of the anchor chain should be in the water. And there was always Rosbach presiding over the drama as he trudged around the boat, reeling off one liners like “I’m madder than a pissed-on chicken” and “we screwed the pooch so many times we should have a litter of puppies running around.”

At the center of the show now is Kerry Titheradge (the stern yet goofy captain of “Below Deck Adventure” fame), who is managing the Motor Yacht Saint David with the cheeky chief stew Fraser Olender by his side.

With that change in captain, the energy on the boat — both onscreen and off — is different, according to Olender.

“Lee has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” Olender said in an interview. “With Kerry, he taught me a lot and sort of forced to me confront issues directly with my team, work them out, as opposed to making executive decisions too soon.”

This shift in management style changes the central conflict — whereas the drama once focused on the captain swiftly kicking out any unpleasant crew member (as we might have seen with Rosbach), the drama now focuses on the whole crew trying to get along (since Titheradge gives people those second chances).

Additionally, Olender noted that the captain’s relationship with the crew can also affect the drama on board.

“Captains absolutely do get involved, whether they know it or not,” Olender said, adding that for the crew, everything is about “trying to impress your captain.”

This phenomenon plays out early in the new season when the lead deckhand, Ben Willoughby, called out a fellow crew member over the radios about not wearing a life vest — something he easily could have done in private. The drama that followed became an interpersonal conflict between the two of them, both with the ultimate goal of impressing Titheradge. (Of course, the two deckhands had kissed on the previous crew night out, which is more in line with the “Below Deck” drama viewers are used to.)

For “Below Deck” showrunners, the changeovers in the cast allowed them to rethink what the show would look like.

From the season premiere, it was immediately apparent that Rosbach’s absence wasn’t the only change this season: The filming is sleeker, the daily, multicourse meals prepared by the chef are given their own glamour shots and the cameras sometimes cut to the perspectives of yachties running around on deck and through the galley.

“Our showrunner, Lauren Simms, is an avid consumer of all different kinds of media,” Noah Samton, a senior vice president of unscripted current production for NBCUniversal, said in an interview. “She pitches us different ideas on how to stylistically evoke different feelings and change the mood a little bit of ‘Below Deck’ without removing what really works.”

Moving through the rest of the season, and potentially through seasons to come, Olender is aiming to bring a cutthroat management style while also bringing affection for his stews, all with his signature British humor.

On Bravo’s side, there are changes in the works for the other “Below Deck” spinoffs — including “Sailing Yacht,” “Mediterranean” and “Down Under” — which collectively, have 26 seasons. Specifically, Samton said that “Down Under” is currently filming and that even though fans should be ready to see new things, the show will stay true to its original concept.

“These are real yachties doing a real job so you have to stay within those confines because the audience isn’t going to want anything that is too produced or fake,” Samton said. “So we have to find ways to reinvent while staying true to the original concept of the show.”

And as Olender said: “I’m sure that every year if I were to work with this franchise again, that I’ll be thrown a collection of total chaotic and disastrous stews — that’s what makes it watchable.”

An earlier version of this article misquoted Fraser Olender, the chief stew of “Below Deck.” He said, “I also feel like Kerry this season. ... Lee has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” not “I feel like Kerry this season, as opposed to Lee, has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him.”
