A Russian Oligarch’s $75 Million Superyacht Just Got Auctioned Off in Gibraltar

What becomes of a sanctioned Russian billionaire’s superyacht after it’s seized ? In the case of the $75 million Axioma , the end result was an auction for way below its market value.

The lavish 236-footer, which was seized from Russian steel magnate Dmitry Pumpyansky in March, attracted 63 bids at a sale in Gibraltar. A true watershed moment, it is the first public auction of an oligarch’s asset since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February.

The superyacht, which boasts six luxurious guest cabins, an infinity pool, a spa and a 3-D cinema, was detained by the Gibraltar government after a legal claim from JP Morgan said Pumpyansky’s holding company Pyrene Investments owed the bank more than $20 million.

The Office of the Admiralty Marshal in Gibraltar confirmed on Tuesday that 63 bids were received for Axioma , but refused to reveal the value of the bids, as reported by the Guardian .

“The successful bidder will be selected by the Admiralty Marshal but details of the bidder and the value of the offer will remain confidential,” the court said in a statement. “Details about the sale value of the vessel will be made available once the transaction has been completed which could take place in approximately 10 to 14 days.”

James Jaffa, a lawyer for British firm Jaffa & Co, told the Guardian that he expects Axioma to sell for “way below” $20 million.

The west has confiscated billions worth of assets since March. British and American authorities have previously said they would seek to funnel the proceeds of sold assets back into Ukraine. This auction has attracted controversy, though, because Axioma has been sold not for the benefit of the Ukrainian people, but for the US investment bank.

Still, the has set a “benchmark” for other banks looking to recoup losses by auctioning assets.

“ Axioma will be a watershed moment for assets that have bank financing against them because all the other banks will realize that the asset can be sold and that they can get some or all of their money back,” Jaffa adds.

AXIOMA was the first superyacht built by the Turkey-based shipyard in 2013 and features lavish elegance at its finest.

There are accommodations for 12 guests in a master suite and five double cabins.

Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht Axioma is a 72m steel superyacht to be built by Dunya Yachts, based in Turkey. This impressive yacht was designed by Diana Scott from the dynamic Monaco based design studio, Sterling Scott. The mega yacht’s interior design is by Alberto Pinto.

Launched in 2013 this 72m mega yacht will accommodate up to 16 guests in complete luxury. Motor yacht Axioma is designed to the highest standards, offering mechanical efficiency and exceptional style and comfort. Axioma boasts huge exterior spaces and entertainment areas across her six decks. One of the main features has to be the large wet-edge 'infinity' pool located at the aft on the main deck. Below the pool, is large space to host the Axioma's main tenders. Axioma’s expansive decks play host to a range of outdoor entertainment areas. The aft upper deck draws guests to dine al-fresco style around a large round table, whilst the sundeck features a large Jacuzzi that is surrounded by sun beds.

Inside, Axioma’s high-volume interior allows incredible, spacious guest areas, including a huge main saloon, which leads out to the yacht’s beach club and infinity pool. Axioma’s upper deck is entirely dedicated to her owners, housing the master suite, walk-in dressing room and a cinema/lounge. On the bridge deck, there is a helipad and a third saloon with glazed roof ceiling that creates a conservatory. Axioma’s interior has been created using Alberto Pinto’s signature colourful styling. The mega yacht features a palette where reds, emeralds, blues, greens and earth tones combine in different spaces to create an interesting effect. Alberto Pinto’s aim is to create an atmosphere that resembles a beach house, with simple materials and sophisticated details. Guest rooms feature natural woven straw and each cabin has an association with a different colour chosen for its relation to the marine environment, such as blue, green, yellow, or a coral colour. The VIP suite has sand blasted glass and jade green dyed wood whilst blue marble and blue dyed wood adorns in the master cabin. Braided brown leather features throughout the halls and the corridors, and different essences of wood feature in the living area and the bridge deck. Fabrics throughout the yacht are created from large knitted canvases in the style of cotton sweaters, mixed with cotton or linen canvases, whilst leather finishes are stitched in the style of saddles and bags. Finally various embroideries complete the décor for the cushions of the couches. For the exterior, the crew areas and the Capitan’s cabin, the choice leaned towards “navy” colours in blue, white and red, always in association with the bleached oak or teak wood. The exterior furniture in teak and straw is completed by a few pieces of red lacquered teak. Powered by twin CAT engines, motor yacht Red Square will reach a top speed of 18 knots, with a cruising speed of around 16 knots.

The luxury superyacht Axioma

Luxury superyacht Axioma (ex Red Square) is a 72 metre vessel, launched by the Turkish shipyard Dunya Yachts in 2013. This superyacht   made her debut at the 2013 yacht shows in Western Europe and soon after found an owner—who re-christened her  Axioma , just like his previous yacht, which was a 155-foot ISA.

Even better is that also like his previous yacht, the owner is making this  Axioma  available for charter, allowing a lucky few guests the chance to see firsthand what this new and seemingly impressive shipyard is capable of achieving.

Impressive Design

What makes  Axioma  worthy of such a fee? First of all,  Axioma features a stunning exterior design and a beach house-style interior by the legendary late designer Alberto Pinto that contrasts natural woods and luxurious flourishes.

Axioma ’ s  main salon is particularly impressive, with a ceiling twice the height of most other yachts (and a memorable venue for parties). The Guests areas on Axioma are situated on the Main Deck and above. The yacht accommodates 12 guests in a Master Suite on the Upper Owner’s Deck and VIP Suite situated on the Main Deck along with the four Guest Double Cabins (two of which are convertible into Twins). The only Guests area situated on the Lower Deck is the high-tech Cinema.

The owner’s suite is the most privileged space on Axioma  due to its incredible views and beautiful design. The owner’s deck features a spectacular private terrace with an exit from the sleeping cabin, avoiding the need to go aft to get outside.  Also, the owner’s suite features a beautiful Jacuzzi.

On the owner’s deck, you will also find the media room – an excellent space to relax in while reading or just enjoying a conversation. Furthermore, from the owner’s deck you will be able to receive the guests that are on the main deck, due to its open space connection.

On the main deck, the infinity swimming pool is an outstanding exterior feature, while the open mezzanine in the main saloon creates a real ‘wow effect’ with its double-height and space. A large round table on the owner’s aft deck offers an amazing alfresco dining.

The bridge aft deck features a large Jacuzzi with a swim-in bar, which is surrounded by large sun pads. Further on the bridge deck you will find a fully equipped gym, massage room and steam room. The sun deck features lounging and intimate seating and sunbathing areas with a shower and day head and a BBQ for perfect summer parties.

Why should you have the guest cabins on the lower deck, and limit them with small windows? On Axioma , the guest cabins are located on the main deck. The only guest area on the lower deck is the amazing cinema, with the rest of the space given to crew and technical areas.

Auctioned superyacht Axioma bound for Turkey

The 72.5-metre superyacht Axioma has left her berth in Gibraltar and is currently en route to Turkey under new ownership, according to her AIS (automatic identification systems).  This is the first voyage the yacht has undertaken since her arrest in March of last year and subsequent auction in September when she fetched $37,500,055 and 63 bids.

Her AIS records her destination as Gemlik, a commercial port just south of Istanbul. It has been speculated that she could be headed for her home shipyard of Dunya Yachts which is located around 100 kilometres from Gemlik. Prior to the yacht's arrest, the shipyard announced that it was constructing a 48-metre support vessel for Axioma.  

Pictures on social media indicate that Axioma is making at least part of the 2,117 nautical mile journey by tow.

Axioma was sold at auction by the Admiralty Court of Gibraltar on August 23 under an “as is, where is” private auction with Howe Robinson handling the sale. 

The sale was finalised on September 27 after being subjected to an enhanced due diligence process. The Court confirmed that "funds will remain in Court for a period of 60 days from the date the sale is advertised in Lloyd’s List".

"Any person with a claim against the vessel, or the proceeds of sale thereof, needs to submit a claim before the expiration of the said period," said a spokesperson for the Court.

The auction comes after the superyacht was arrested at the end of March as a result of sanctions against Russia.

She marked the first Russian-owned superyacht to be listed for sale since the sanctions were introduced in 2022. It is understood that she was auctioned following a loan violation, which arose after the yacht’s former owner was added to the European Union's list of sanctioned individuals.

Days before the auction, a license granted by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control authorised US-based buyers to participate in the sale.

Axioma was built in 2013 by Dunya Yachts and delivered under the name Red Square . She has proven herself to be a highly popular and versatile charter platform over the years, with a consistently booked-up calendar.

She offers accommodation for up to 12 guests in six cabins with a complement for a crew of 20. She has been meticulously maintained over the years, most recently with a full-scale refit in 2020 which gave her a bright new hull colour.

Onboard highlights include a 3D cinema room and a generous aft deck swimming pool that overlooks the swim platform. There is a second jacuzzi on the upper deck aft, alongside a good variety of shaded and non-shaded al fresco areas across her decks.

The yacht’s interiors have been crafted by legendary designer Alberto Pinto, who has given her a chic, monochromatic look that complements her volume and natural light. She features a double-height main saloon with a mezzanine area and a private owner’s deck with a skylight.

She is powered by twin Caterpillar engines which give her a top speed of 18 knots and is ABS-classed. 

The yacht was listed without a reserve price and the final auction price was never disclosed. The identity of the buyer was also withheld.

Axioma superyacht to become first vessel seized under Russian sanctions to be auctioned

The Axioma will become the first seized superyacht to be auctioned after sanctions were imposed on Russian oligarch's following Russia's invasion of Ukraine .

Proceeds from the sale of the £65m luxury vessel on Tuesday in Gibraltar won't go to Ukraine, however, but instead US investment bank JP Morgan , which says it is owed more than $20m (£17m) by the yacht's billionaire Russian ex-owner, Dmitry Pumpyansky.

Detained in Gibraltar in March, the 72.5-metre Axioma is the epitome of yachting opulence, boasting six guest cabins, a pool, gym, jacuzzi, spa and 3D cinema.

Although many oligarch-owned or affiliated superyachts have been seized since the UK, EU and US imposed a raft of sanctions on wealthy Russians, the Axioma is the first to have been put up for sale.

The auction materialised after JP Morgan launched a legal claim for the money it says it is owed by Pyrene Investments, Pumpyansky’s holding company.

The US bank said the terms of the loan had been broken because it was unable to accept repayments from Pyrene following the sanctions imposed on Pumpyansky. It thus asked Gibraltar's courts to seize and sell the yacht.

“The Axioma was arrested following the filing of an admiralty claim in the supreme court. Given that the sale is by auction, pursuant to an order of the court, the Admiralty marshal cannot say how much it is expected to sell for or how many people have expressed interest,” a spokesperson for Gibraltar Courts Service said.

However, the man in charge of the auction told the UK's Guardian newspaper there had been an “unexpected late surge by prospective buyers” with more than 30 from around the world travelling to Gibraltar.

“They are people who own or have owned boats of similar size, and have been attracted to this boat because of the judicial sale process – they are convinced they’re going to get a bargain,” said Nigel Hollyer, the broker to the Admiralty marshal of the supreme court of Gibraltar.

Originally called Red Square , the Axioma was built by Dunya Yachts in Turkey in 2013, and was available for other millionaires to charter for $558,500 a week.

With an estimated fortune of £1.84bn, the loss of revenue is unlikely to trouble Pumpyansky too gravely. He is the owner and chairman of steel pipe manufacturer OAO TMK, which supplies Russia state energy giant Gazprom. The UK has described him as one of Vladimir Putin's closest oligarchs. Unsurprisingly, he could not be contacted for comment on the impending auction.

PRESENTING SUPERYACHT AXIOMA

She is one of the world’s largest yachts .    The 72-meter motor yacht AXIOMA offers enormous volume, in specific, six decks and over 30,000 square meters of space.  A private outdoor cinema and lounge area leads out to a dining terrace.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Important to note is the amazing master suite on the upper deck of AXIOMA.  The master suite takes up the entire forward section of the deck.   Further, this vessel is one of the few in charter to offer a full beam VIP guest cabin.  This VIP suite is located on the main deck. In addition, two, equal-sized double cabins and two twin cabins exist here, also.

Primary amenities include a bridge deck that doubles as a helipad.  A third saloon with a glazed roof serves as a conservatory.  The main deck features a beach club with an infinity swimming pool.  Four sets of double-sized sofas exist on the beach club.  The upper and main decks have a spectacular open gallery mezzanine.

The lower deck space offers a large wellness and beauty spa, as well as a gymnasium. Specifically, when the yacht’s tenders are removed, two x 15-meter teak balconies fold down and out. They open over the sea. This results in nearly doubling the size of the available space.

The yacht’s Alberto Pinto interior design is typical of his flamboyant colorful styling. He recreated the lifestyle appeal of coastal Italy and France.  A Capri yacht charter or Cote d’Azure yacht charter experience on this vessel blends.  In specific, the onshore lifestyle of these regions. In addition, offering privacy and mobility that only a yachting holiday can deliver.
