Below Deck Sailing Yacht has caused firestorm on social media after a controversial sexual encounter between two cast members.

This week, stewardess Ashley Marti had sex with the yacht's First Officer Gary King while he was highly intoxicated, which many viewers deemed 'inappropriate'.

Things kicked off after the entire crew went out for a boozy dinner during their night off.

When they returned to the yacht, Ashley and Gary decided to strip down and get into the jacuzzi together.

They quickly started flirting, with Ashley giving Gary a foot massage as Chef Engineer Colin Macrae and 2nd stewardess Gabriela Barragán watched from a distance.

'Ashley is f***ing desperate for Gary,' commented Colin, while Gabby added: 'It's a game for her. She said that with her own mouth to me.'

Things then escalated, with the pair sharing a kiss before Ashley started straddling Gary in the hot tub.

They then headed downstairs into a guest cabin, with Gary saying: 'Well, you said you were going to massage me. That's what I came down here for.'

'I am massaging you,' Ashley responded. 'I'm just so sorry I took my shirt off ... I want you to f**k me.'

Slurring his words, Gary responded: 'Oh yeah? Go on then. Go on then.'

Although the pair weren't on camera, the mics in the cabin picked up everything they said while a stationary camera filmed the closed door from the outside.

'I thought I was getting a friendly massage,' Gary said, before Ashley giggled: 'You're f***ing inside of me right now. We're way past that.'

At this point, Gary expressed that he wanted the encounter to end.

'Okay. Get it out,' he slurred. 'Okay we're not having sex, we're not having sex.'

'It's already in!' Ashley replied, as a drunken Gary continued to protest, 'no, no.'

The next scene showed a shirtless Gary stumbling out of the cabin to head back to his own bunk, which he shares with Colin and chef Marcos Spaziani.

'I was getting a massage, and then I turned around, and she's stark as,' he told the boys.

'I couldn't help myself either,' he continued. 'I'm like, "I thought I came down here for a massage!"

'She's like, "You're half naked." I'm like, "I've got my pants on."'

Speaking to producers about the situation, Ashley said: 'I went down to give him a back massage. That was the intention. And other things might have happened, but I don't want to get into the details of it all.'

The next morning, Ashley came into Gary's bunk and he admitted that he couldn't recall what happened between them the previous night.

'I don't even remember getting back to the boat last night,' he moaned, clearly hungover.

'I came straight back to bed when I got back to the boat,' he said, as Ashley burst out laughing.

'You don't remember when she took you downstairs?' asked Marcos.

Speaking to producers, who asked him directly if he 'had sex with Ashley,' a confused Gary responded: 'I remember her giving me a massage and I thought we fell asleep.'

A few hours later, Gary pulled Ashley aside to discuss the incident properly.

'I think if this is gonna happen again, let's try not be that drunk because I want to be able to remember it and enjoy it,' he said.

Later that day, the crew spent their day off at a nearby private pool, where Ashley admitted to Gary that she had performed oral sex on him.

'She said today that she gave me a blowjob,' he explained. 'And then we f***ed and I didn't remember because we were too drunk.

'I was white girl wasted last night. That's not nice. That's not attractive at all. Who would want to have sex with me on a normal basis, let alone when I'm paralytically f***ed?'

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with many viewers feeling like there was a double standard due around gender.

'Imagine if Ashley said "we're not having sex, I came for a massage..." and Gary told her "oh well, it's already in." We'd be calling for his head,' said another.

'I’m so annoyed and disgusted by Ashley’s behavior. She is completely inappropriate with Gary,' fumed another.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht 's Gary Confronts Daisy & Colin Over Secret Hookup in Reunion Bonus Clip

See below deck sailing yacht 's gary king and daisy kelliher go to war after colin macrae revealed they actually hooked up before season four in e news' exclusive reunion bonus clip..

The messy love triangle between Gary King , Daisy Kelliher and Colin MacRae continues to make waves.

In E! News' exclusive sneak peek at Peacock 's extended and uncensored version of Below Deck Sailing Yacht 's season four reunion , which concluded July 18, Gary confronts his fellow yachties after Colin made the shocking revelation he and Daisy actually first hooked up before filming the Bravo series' latest season.

But first, host Andy Cohen grills Gary about kissing Daisy after her boatmance with Colin was already in full swing. "If you were Colin and you had seen what went on between you and Daisy," the Bravo host asks the deck lead in the preview, "what would you have reacted?"

However, Gary insists that it isn't so simple.

"I think he's got all the right to act like he did, but I'm also just confused at the whole situation from the start to the end," he replies. "If they were spending time in the hotel together and they did say they had true feelings for each other, why come on to the season like..."

However, before he can finish his thought, an infuriated Daisy cuts him off saying, "Oh my god, we kissed each other a couple of times! Jesus Christ."

However, Gary thinks the chief stew is now downplaying the feelings she had for the chief engineer.

"Daisy, now you say something different than what happened in the hotel room," Gary continues. "If you had feelings for someone, why come into the season like it was separate? And none of us crew besides you and Colin knew about this."

And though Daisy tries explaining herself by saying, "Because I had found out he had been sleeping with," it's Gary's turn to interject as he shouts, "I'm talking!"

See the tense confrontation in the bonus scene above, and catch the full extended and uncensored version of the Below Deck Sailing Yacht reunion on Peacock  starting July 19.

Inside Below Deck: From unaired scenes to secret cast and replaced crew members as series sails towards Emmys success

BELOW DECK Captain Lee

There is no denying that Below Deck has been a release for many over the last few years, giving us some much-needed travel inspiration when we couldn’t leave the house – and a helping of good old-fashioned dose of drama.

If you sailed through the original series , and the Mediterranean and Sailing Yacht spin-offs, at an alarming speed to see what boatmance was causing chaos, Kate Chastain’s unique towel art, or which dish got sent back to the galley, you weren’t the only one as most of us can now recite maritime law by memory.

The boat-based reality series now has another bow to add to its many strings, as it has been nominated for two Emmys at this year’s TV awards , taking place this month.

Ahead of the ceremony, producer and show-creator Mark Cronin spoke to Metro.co.uk about all things Below Deck, how Captain Lee ended up on the series, and whether there is anything we don’t get to see on board.

Lifting the lid on just how Below Deck first docked onto our screens in 2013, he revealed that colleague Rebecca Henning first approached him to delve into the world of yachties, selling him on the idea of young people who leave land behind to work on boats, merging luxury clients, incredible locations and high-pressure service.

‘It sounded amazing to me,’ he said of the premise. ‘What other workplace has you living in cramped conditions like that? This was a luxury experience and beautiful destination resorts all over the world.

Video: Below Deck Season 9 trailer

There's a new captain on board..

‘We went down to Fort Lauderdale, which is the capital of yachting in the US, and we just interviewed a bunch of yachties that were walking down the docks. We just pulled them aside [with] a camera, and asked them questions about what their life is like, and the craziest things that have happened to them. The stories they told were unbelievable and we just realised we were onto something there.’

Even with an untapped goldmine of stories, they had to make a pilot for what would eventually become Below Deck, and actually got a former star of the series on the team, with Mark explaining that original chief stewardess Adrienne Gang helped serve as ‘an entrée into the yachting world’.

But, with one hurdle cleared and a cast finally assembled, producers had an even bigger problem on their hands when it came to the boat itself. In fact, while Captain Lee has well and truly become the face of the franchise, and a firm favourite with fans around the world, he wasn’t originally meant to be on the show .

Yes, seriously – Could you imagine the series without the original stud of the sea?

Spilling the beans on how he made his way onto our screens, Mark confessed that Lee actually came with Cuor di Leone, the first boat on the show, but Aleks Taldykin – who fans will know from series one – was meant to be the original focus.

Below Deck season one Aleks

‘Aleks had the right licence for that size boat and we thought that was enough. I thought, “Oh he’s got a licence, that’s good, he can be the captain,’ he said. ‘We’ll get the old guy off and we’ll put the young guy on, and we’re in business.”

‘We got down there and Lee let us know that that was not the way it works in yachting … You need real experience, you need real time on the boat, and usually the way that works is you move up from boson to first mate. Aleks didn’t have any of that, he just had the licence.’

Lee initially suggested that he could captain the boat and just keep Aleks there in front of the cameras, something that wouldn’t realistically work for a reality show about the inner workings of a superyacht, and would cause more confusion.

Eventually, Mark recalled, they just had to ask if Captain Lee wanted to join the series – and then had to win the network around as well, who weren’t quite sold on having an older person front the series.

‘But he did it, he pulled it off, he was fantastic. He is the real captain, that’s really the way he is, that’s really the way he runs his boats,’ he said. ‘It’s almost like a father figure. It gave the kids of crew something to push against. If the captain had been Aleks, the young, single attractive guy, maybe it wouldn’t have been as interesting? It would have been just a bunch of kids running a boat.’

BELOW DECK Captain Lee Rosbach

Mark also wanted to clear up speculation of secret cast members behind-the-scenes, after it was claimed that there is a whole crew who put in the hard work, while the yachties on the screen just pretend.

Former stars Hannah Ferrier and Caroline Bedol alleged there were people we don’t normally see on board , but the creator poured ice cold water on their words, insisting that there are no cast members that viewers don’t see – as they make a point of introducing us all to the first mate and first engineer, who are kept around for safety reasons, in the first episode of every series.

Making a fair point, he joked that it would be ‘boring’ for viewers to see the captains buried in paperwork, sorting out docking placements and passport details for every journey that occurs.

The camera crew take huge measures not to get in the way of the action while shooting and usually try to keep out of every shot – with one notable exception being when a member of the camera crew leapt into action to save Ashton Pienaar in the terrifying moment that he had been dragged into the water by the boat lines.

Letting us in on how they manage it, the producer shared: ‘We take over one of the little state rooms, we take the bed out and we build our little control room in there, with screens, some chairs, a couple of tables and some snacks.

BELOW DECK MEDITERRANEAN Hannah Ferrier

‘Every morning we get aboard the boat and sneak into the room, and just stay there. We have another boat that follows the yacht that feeds us, it’s basically a floating galley. It makes lunch for everybody, because you can’t ask the chef of the boat to cook for the TV crew.

‘Sometimes if you’re a cameraman, you’re probably going to be able to jump on a tender and run over to the other boat for lunch, and then go snorkelling.’

Just like the production crew make sure to stay out of the drama themselves, Mark confessed that there may be times they have the odd word with the cast in certain situations, to make sure that things are kept fair, interesting and fun on camera.

However, he vowed that they would never interfere with the way conversations are had or direct them in an inauthentic way, as the cast ‘aren’t puppets’.

‘The captain usually doesn’t know what’s going on because they’re up in the wheelhouse most of the time, so a lot of stuff goes on that they don’t know anything about, and we can’t tell them because that doesn’t make sense that they have God knowledge,’ he insisted. ‘We know what’s going on, we see it on our cameras, we can’t tell the captain what’s going on.

BELOW DECK MEDITERRANEAN Captain Sandy Yawn

‘But we will say to the captain occasionally, “If someone comes to you and complains about somebody, make sure you get both sides of the story.” That’s the most common thing I will say to a captain, don’t make a snap judgement. If it sounds like you should fire somebody immediately, take one beat and get both sides of the story. I’m saying that mostly because I want, on television, to hear both sides of the story.

‘But we are not in any way telling anybody what to do. We don’t say, “Hey, complain about so and so”. We don’t do that at all. It’s better when you don’t, it’s better when people just give their real, honest opinions, it’s much more interesting than anything I could make up.

‘We want them to know that this is their real lives, there are real consequences to their actions with each other. They’re not puppets to us and we want them to know that. We want them not to feel like we’re telling them what to do or say or how to feel, because then that just becomes fake.’

Most seasons of Below Deck and the spin-offs follow similar strands – there are rows between the crews, the odd boatmance or two, tears, tantrums and someone who really can’t get to grips with their radio. And if you can read that without hearing ‘June, June, Hannah’ ringing in your head, you haven’t watched the series enough.

But Mark confessed that a lot of the romance scenes don’t often make it to air, as there is a lot more sex that is left on the cutting room floor.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Gary Sydney

‘There is stuff that happens that’s too wild for television, usually sexually,’ he teased. ‘We always actually stop the cameras for a moment and say to both parties who might be about to engage in sexual activity, “Are you both okay with this?”

‘We ask separately, and we make sure that there’s not some bad thing going on from that standpoint. Once we’re satisfied that this is mutually consensual, then we’ll pull out the cameras and off they go.’

While the programme has had largely had the same premise over the years, Mark explained that there was something major that has changed – the attitudes of the cast taking part.

Originally, he claimed they were ‘really trying to hide the truth’ from the camera crew, and just wanted to be seen as people doing their daily jobs. They didn’t want to be seen as people having animosity or falling in love with each other.

‘There was a lot of secrecy, they would try to hide what was happening, and we were trying, sleuth like, to figure out what was really happening,’ he added. ‘In those early seasons there was a lot of sneakiness going on.

‘That has gone away. The people who come on Below Deck now understand what the show is about. They know that the cameras are everywhere and they’re just honest about who they are and what’s going on.

‘It’s not 100% because they text each other, and that’s a problem for us. Usually because they’ll say, “Let’s not talk about this in front of the cameras” or “Let’s work it out separately”. And that’s a shame when they do that because it just gives us less to make the show about.

‘But in general, this problem has really subsided, and people just come on and they just live their lives on the boat, do their jobs, say what they say, and do what they do.’

Thankfully, we have a lot more on the way as Below Deck Sailing Yacht season three has just wrapped in Menorca, with Below Deck Adventure currently filming in Norway, and Below Deck Down Under is well and truly on the way.

With Below Deck Med currently airing, season nine of the original show setting sail next month and Emmy nominations in the bag, we think that’ll just about tide us over. Maybe…

Should You Wake A Sleeping Chef? ‘Below Deck Med’ Stars Captain Sandy Yawn & Aesha Scott Have Very Different Answers

Captain sandy yawn thinks returning 'below deck med' yachtie aesha scott has "rizz": "she came back with a mad skill set", 'below deck' exclusive clip: dylan piérre de villiers plays truth or dare with bikini-clad charter guests, aesha scott returns to ‘below deck mediterranean’ as chief stew: watch the season 9 trailer.

We were left high and dry after a week with no new episode of Below Deck Sailing Yacht , but thankfully Bravo’s hit show is back tonight with another installment of its stellar third season. The last episode featured a very ill-advised Ashley/Gary hookup, a much-needed day off, and the unfortunate departure of the Second Stew Gabriela Barragan (who is now flourishing on a new boat captained by Below Deck alum Wes O’Dell).

In tonight’s episode, the crew of Parsifal III sails on with a new group of charter guests, an understaffed interior team, and a new deckhand, Barnaby Birkbeck. In this exclusive clip, fans are treated to their first glimpse of Barnaby and Chief Engineer Colin MacRae talking about an engine room tour, but the main event is dinner service. As Chef Stew Daisy Kelliher and remaining Stew Ashley Marti prepare various kinds of martinis for the thirsty guests, Chef Marcos Spaziani reveals that he has created a five-course meal because he wants to “entertain [the guests] the most [he] can.” His logic? “If they’re eating my food it’s gonna be hard for them to complain about the drinks and the little sh*t.”

Ever the team player, Chef Marcos accompanies the first course (a delicious looking Spanish tortilla with chorizo) to introduce the dish. Just as he’s about to speak, he is distracted by the primary guest’s wardrobe malfunction…the dreaded nip slip! “It’s hard to concentrate when have a nipple saying, ‘Hello Marcos, I’m here,'” Chef Marcos jokes in his confessional interview. Ever the professional, he’s able to get through his spiel, but quickly goes to Captain Glenn Shepherd to joke about his near mishap. Chef Marcos, you scamp!

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

90 day fiancé: is anna campisi too thin (she's slimmer than ever after weight loss), welcome to plathville: who is micah plath's new mystery girlfriend.

  • Gary King refuses to take responsibility for his scandalous behavior, denying any involvement in sexual misconduct allegations.
  • Reddit user highlights Gary's defensive attitude, citing impulse control issues around women.
  • Despite controversy, viewers are eager for the return of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, hoping for a resolution.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht star Gary King has been one of the most buzzed-about stars in the franchise throughout the last year due to his scandalous behavior, but he’s proving he’ll never take responsibility for his actions . While Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 has been filmed for over a year, the series has yet to return to the screen after Gary was accused of sexual misconduct by one of the series’ makeup artists, Samantha Suarez. Gary, who has worked as Captain Glenn Shephard’s First Officer for several seasons, has denied that he had any involvement with Samantha at all.

“he thinks he can act like that with all women"

In a recent post on the Below Deck subreddit, Reddit user u/teleportmasssive showed off some of Gary’s replies to comments on his Instagram, which make it clear that he’s defensive. Gary, who was harsh to viewers calling him out in the comments, has made it clear he has no interest in changing his ways. Summarized by user u/TheLizardQueen3000, the Redditor explained that Gary “has horrible impulse control issues around women” and when his behavior isn’t called out in the moment “he thinks he can act like that with all women, and he's confused when women don't like it.”

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Should Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Air On Bravo?

As Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4’s finale was over a year ago, many are wondering what’s next for the series. Though the season has been filmed, Gary’s alleged misconduct came on the heels of a season that also painted him as a creep, and viewers felt there were too many red flags to ignore. After the allegations came out against Gary from Below Deck makeup artists Samantha, Bravo had to take action even though Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 was already in production. They removed Gary from his panel at BravoCon, but continued with the season’s scheduled filming .

Now, over a year after Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4’s end, the next season has been finished filming for quite some time, but there’s been no news on when the series will return, leaving many believing it won’t. While some think that Below Deck Sailing Yacht has finished its last charter season, others are curious about whether the show could proceed with the filmed footage for the upcoming season, while craftily editing Gary out as much as possible. It feels like the most responsible choice to simply refilm, but Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 may air on Bravo .

Even if Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 doesn’t wind up airing in its traditional capacity on Bravo, it’s clear that viewers want to see more from Captain Glenn and his crew. Much like Below Deck Down Under , which viewers have been looking forward to for over a year, any news about the upcoming season of the series would give viewers peace of mind. Even if Gary refuses to take responsibility for his actions and chooses to defend himself publicly, knowing the future of Below Deck Sailing Yacht would allow viewers to breathe a bit more easily.

Revealed: Below Deck Sailing Yacht Captain Glenn Shephard’s Shocking History

The Parsifal III has sailed on Below Deck Sailing Yacht for all four seasons thus far. In each, Captain Glenn Shephard has steered this often temperamental vessel from its wheelhouse, when not enjoying massive crackers in its galley. He’s comfortable on this yacht, which tracks since he’s been the Captain of Parsifal III for over 13 years now. Yet, long before he brought this boat onto Bravo , he and the Parsifal III made shocking, environmentally disastrous headlines together, which sucks.

We all know that in BDSY Season 2, Captain Glenn encountered strong winds, as the Parsifal III sat docked. These winds sent the sailing yacht crashing into the dock, as the deck team scrambled to save what they could. Thankfully, the damage to the Parsifal III was minimal. The dock, however, saw the yacht’s insurance company stepping up, as these costs were slightly higher.

This was a classic case of a filmed accident, which got taken care of straight away. But there was another crash many, many years ago, which saw the Parsifal III grounding, destroying a reef, and then fleeing the scene. Now, of course, two sides to this narrative exist. All the same, the damages that went down on Captain Glenn’s watch were shocking and very, very real.

Captain Glenn Shephard’s Carrot Shoal crash

In 2013, Parsifal III crashed into Carrot Shoal in BVI & spilled 30 tons of lead shot ballast onto the reef. by u/2EspressoMartinis in belowdeck

In 2013, the Parsifal III crashed into Carrot Shoal. Just an FYI, if you map-meh like me, this area is located in the Virgin Islands. As a result, the keel became damaged. But the worst part was that approximately 30 tons of lead-shot ballast spilled out, coating the reef in turn.

Making matters even worse, as the BVI Beacon reported on (which Reddit then shared), the crews onboard allegedly sailed away with the Parsifal III, taking her over to St. Thomas for repairs. Apparently, they did so without reporting this incident to the Virgin Island authorities. Only after the island’s government launched an investigation did the captain report this spill, but his report arrived almost two months after it had even happened, which is wild.

On top of this, the article also states that “E-mails sent to the captain of the vessel, Glen Shepherd [sic], after the incident were unanswered.” June, June, Captain Glenn, what’s up, bruh? Had this been Malia White , she would have documented the shiz outta this mess. Because she doesn’t play around with Maritime Law.

Sadly, Carrot Shoal, a once thriving reef, will never be the same again. Dr. Shannon Gore, a well-respected marine biologist, wrote a report on this just a few beats later, writing that “Aside from large broken fragments of rock from the impact of the keel, a large area of Benthic species — corals, algae, sponge, invertebrates, etc. — were destroyed from being smothered by either rock fragments or lead.”

Hate to hear it. Florida girl here. Our oceans are a vital part of our ecosystem. While I can accept that accidents happen, I can’t accept that this one took months to even report.

The Parsifal III’s shareholders’ conflicting response

Rene Sindlev, one of the Parsifal III’s two 50-percent shareholders, offered a quote that clashes with the original report, saying “I was informed as a shareholder about the accident shortly after it happened. I understood we took immediate action and the insurance company likewise,” he wrote via an e-mail to the same news outlet above, adding, “Parsifal 3 never neglected the responsibility neither took a passive role in helping to clean up. Divers [were sent] to hover and clean the waisted [sic] area immediately.”

However, the court records state that Captain Glenn reported this grounding only after the island’s government launched their investigation. And again, this report arrived two months after this crash had even taken place. I guess the word immediate is a tricky one to grasp, eh?

Seems like that’s a yes, as Rene, when told about these conflicting narratives, stated that he was “totally unaware” of these court findings. Turns out, Rene wasn’t tight with the other shareholder at the time of this incident. So the details of this entire ordeal are a bit murky on his end.

You know what else is still murky? The waters around Carrot Shoal. Because the clean-up efforts have since stalled due to a lack of funding.

The verdict of Captain Glenn Shephard’s crash

Five years later, the Parsifal III’s lawyers managed to skate away from more than $1 million worth of potential liability in this matter. Instead, they only had to pay out about $250,000, according to the case’s judgment. Hopefully, great lessons were still learned though. I’d hate to see Captain Glenn make any further questionable decisions, both on Bravo and off, because when it comes to our oceans, preservation is key.

This New Yacht Is Sailing to Gorgeous, Lesser-known Ports in the Caribbean Sea — and I Was on Board With 'Below Deck's' Chef Ben

E merald Cruises' new Emerald Sakara ship brings guests to smaller ports in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, with an onboard marina and the occasional Bravo-lebrity.

With a couple dozen guests looking on, chef Ben Robinson was showing how to slice and dice a fresh red snapper. “You kind of feel him — but you don’t fondle him,” said Robinson, the fan favorite from the Bravo reality show Below Deck, who’s always ready with a quip. As he pulled a perfect filet off the bone, he explained how to salt the fish and that there’s no more important relationship than the one you have with your fishmonger. “My advice is to always be friendly,” he noted. “I like to support my mom-and-pop [businesses]. If you become familiar with them, they’ll say, ‘Hey, I got this in this morning.’”

The cooking demo, which also featured a ceviche how-to and tips on knife sharpening, was one of many “Chef Ben” moments on my trip aboard Emerald Sakara . It’s the newest 100-passenger vessel from Emerald Cruises, which launched in the fall of 2023, a sibling vessel to the Emerald Azzurra .

During an eight-day voyage in March from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, the reality personality was definitely one of the star attractions. Robinson spent several evenings in the galley, creating special dishes such as a panko-crusted veal striploin stuffed with pesto.

He also hosted a well-attended Q&A about his life in the kitchen — and spent plenty of time connecting with fans, many of whom booked the trip specifically to chop it up with Below Deck alum.

“We definitely booked because of Ben,” said Shannon Welnel , a Montana-based travel advisor who had lots of praise for his cuisine — and the yacht-like atmosphere on board the 100-passenger ship. Other guests I spoke with admitted they hadn’t seen much Below Deck, but were intrigued by the chance to chill with a Bravo-lebrity.

Emerald Sakara

  • With a max of just 100 passengers, Emerald Sakara feels at times like a private yacht, with no lines and no crowds, and outstanding service from a highly experienced crew.
  • Minimalist rooms recall the stripped down aesthetic of Miami Beach or Mykonos, Greece, with pops of color from Missoni Home accents and a sleek-yet-functional bathroom with plenty of storage space.
  • While this small ship has but one restaurant and one poolside cafe, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to meals, whether you’re hitting the breakfast or lunch buffet or choosing from the dinner menu.
  • The onboard marina, which is open in favorable weather conditions, offers watersports and swimming off the stern of the ship.
  • Easy to understand and mostly inclusive pricing covers meals, beverages at mealtime, many tours, and surprisingly speedy Wi-Fi.

The intimate-ship vibe was also one reason the chef wanted to hop aboard. “This definitely has more of a yacht vibe than any other [ship] I've been on,” Robinson told me one afternoon. “A hundred passengers is not a lot,” he said. “I've been on boats with 2,500 passengers, and you really do feel like you're anonymous. But here, the service is great, and you really are treated as an individual and someone important. And you kind of lose that on the big boats.”

While Robinson doesn’t have immediate plans to join another Emerald cruise, he told me that there were plenty of parallels between his life on megayachts and what the Sakara offers its guests. “It’s been incredible,” he said.

I had to agree. The Sakara certainly has much to offer, both in spite of its smaller size and because of it. While it’s available to book by the cabin, like any cruise ship, it still manages to feel at times like a private yacht, particularly when it sails to less-commonly visited ports such as Culebra, on Puerto Rico, or St. Bart’s. In the latter, we dropped anchor near Eric Schmidt’s yacht, Whisper , and had the whole day to explore the glitzy island and its capital, Gustavia. (After a drive around in the morning, I managed to catch the beautiful sunset from the lovely little Shell Beach, right in town.)

“The benefit of being on a small cruise ship like this one is that we can enter small ports and areas where others can’t,” said Robert Kuznin, the captain of Sakara , who previously worked with several cruise lines, including Paul Gauguin, Seabourn, and Virgin Voyages. “For example, when we dropped anchor in Esperanza Bay,” he explained about our stop at the island of Vieques, “there were only two meters under the keel — and that was the shallowest I’ve ever been!”

The ability to go places that larger ships can’t was also on display one morning on St. Kitts, one of the final stops of my trip. It was still early in the morning, but already four mega-ships were docked in Basseterre, the island’s capital. Instead of tying up next to them on the busy cruise pier, we dropped anchor just off the beach in South Friar’s Bay, a long sweep of sand in the island’s southern reaches. There were no crowds to contend with, no paperwork hassles, no touts offering dodgy cab rides. A five-minute tender ride to the beach was all it took to meet our local guide. Time from leaving the breakfast buffet to our first stop? About 25 minutes. Even the most efficient mega-ship would struggle to make that happen — and they can’t drop anchor right off the one of the best beaches on the island.

Other moments aboard Sakara felt like something out of Below Deck . One afternoon, I made my way to the yacht’s marina, a platform at the stern stocked with lounge chairs, refreshments, and water toys such as a floating trampoline and inflatable sea kayaks. I jumped off the stern into the Caribbean and then tried out the ship’s Seabob, a floating gadget that’s like a cross between a Jet Ski and an electric scooter.

As I continued my joy ride, I could see another vessel anchored just north of us. Turns out, it was David Geffen’s private yacht , Rising Sun . Of course, we were there first.

Here’s a closer look at all the amenities of the Emerald Sakara , which sails seasonally in coastal waters in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Staterooms

Welcome to your starship: the stripped down, white-and-gray cabins on Sakara feel sci-fi chic, particularly when the accent lighting is switched on. They’re also, thankfully, spacious and super functional, with ample storage space (including a safe), a small minibar, a coffee station, and a clever headboard built-in that’s a great spot for your charging devices and water bottle. Most of the 50 rooms and suites have verandas; ocean-view staterooms are the exception. Bathrooms are just big enough, with plenty of storage, and are stocked with Espa products and a hair dryer. My cabin, 421, was a 300-square-foot balcony suite toward the aft of the ship on deck four: I never once heard noise from the surrounding cabins or in the hallway, though I did occasionally notice sounds and vibrations from the vessel, something that is common on even the largest of ships. A note on power plugs: my stateroom had U.S.-style outlets throughout as well as USB-A charging ports on either side of the bed, a nice touch.

Bars and Restaurants

Because Sakara is smaller than most cruise ships, it can’t compete on sheer volume of bars and restaurants. Still, the food on board is solid. La Cucina is the only true dining room, with both indoor and outdoor seating; it has somewhat limited hours compared to the round-the-clock dining options on bigger vessels. That being said, I certainly didn’t go hungry: a breakfast buffet is complemented by traditional à la minute options such as omelets and pancakes; lunch is also buffet style with a carving station. Dinner is more restaurant style, with options from an ever-changing daily menu plus always available classics such as Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, grilled salmon, and spaghetti bolognese on offer. (Many dietary restrictions and preferences can be accommodated.)

On my voyage, chef Robinson put together several special plates, including what might’ve been the best dish of the week: a sesame-crusted seared yellowfin tuna with celeriac puree. The Below Deck star also put together a panko veal striploin roulade one night and, another evening, offered a citrus-cured hamachi with, in a touch of molecular gastronomy, “mango spheres.” Elsewhere on board, a poolside cafe, Aqua Café, has quick bites like burgers and flatbreads, as well as sweets and coffee pulled from a Cimbali espresso machine. The cocktails served in the Amici Lounge and the Sky Bar were consistently excellent, mixed by a talented team of pros who’ve previously worked on Seabourn ships and in some of Dubai’s top hotels. One weaker spot was the selection of wine on board: pours at mealtimes are included, but they didn’t rock my boat. A short list of “chairman’s wines,” available at extra cost, included a couple by-the-bottle finds such as 2013 vintage Cristal ($650) and some mid-tier Bordeaux and Burgundy options.

Where Emerald Sakara Sails

Though small, this ship isn’t an expedition yacht. Rather, it’s specifically designed for warm-weather coastal cruising, meaning it spends the lion’s share of its time in places such as the Caribbean and, in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months, the Mediterranean. My trip aboard was spent entirely in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, where passages between ports were short and the seas were often calm. (We did occasionally encounter some swells of up to two meters, or 6.6 feet. I saw many guests wearing medicated patches to prevent motion sickness throughout the trip.) Sakara typically spends a season of several months in a given region, with a variety of cruise lengths offered, ranging from six to 24 days. In 2024, the ship will spend April through November in the Mediterranean. Sakara will return to the Caribbean at the end of the year, through April 2025.

Shore Excursions

Tours off the ship were a strong suit for Emerald, at least on my voyage. Most stops offered a variety of activities, ranging from a simple transfer to a nearby beach to a full-on, multi-hour tour. Usually, I found myself ashore with a very small group of folks — fewer than a dozen — and all the guides Emerald arranged were true pros. Passengers raved about a kayak paddle through the bioluminescent bay on Vieques, something I sadly didn’t try myself. I did, however, enjoy a short guided hike on the island of St. John, to the pristine beach along Salomon Bay, which was all but deserted. The organization of excursions felt flawless to me, thanks no doubt to the crew and shore excursion manager, Pilar Atencio. Worth a mention, too, were Atencio’s detailed briefings on what to expect each day. While these sorts of “port talks'' are common on ships of all sizes, they felt particularly useful on Sakara because of how intimate our groups were; many passengers made a point of attending the pre-dinner talks every night, for info on what to expect about our anchorage, historical background on each island, and detailed info about what each tour offering would entail.

Amenities and Entertainment

Call it small but mighty: Sakara has all the essentials, which is a bit of feat for a ship this size. A cozy spa has wellness and beauty treatments, as well as a small hairstyling and facial studio; morning yoga and stretching are available on deck. The fitness center, with a few cardio machines, a Peloton bike, and a variety of weights and other gear gets the job done. The smallish pool and a top-deck whirlpool were lovely — though I spent most of my time in the ocean: the Sakara ’s marina deck is a key feature, and it was open several afternoons during my trip. It’s like the greatest pool party you’ve ever been to, complete with piña coladas, sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and a trampoline, right off the stern of the ship. It is, truly, as much fun as it sounds like, though it is subject to the whims of weather and ocean currents. Also available in some destinations are e-bikes from Gocycle, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis; during my trip, several guests gave them a spin on the island of Vieques. Sakara also carries a ton of snorkeling gear and beach towels, which passengers can borrow whenever they like. In terms of performances, this isn’t the vessel for Broadway-style shows, but guitarist Jamie Ferguson and voyage director Nathalie Millet added plenty of live music to the trip.

Family-friendly Offerings

The youngest passengers I spoke with on my cruise were in their 20s — and they were traveling with their parents. Sakara is perhaps the perfect ship for families traveling with adult children, since it offers such a diverse array of activities to suit different tastes and activity levels, while visiting intriguing destinations. The ship is also intimate enough that everybody can gather easily for meals — or a swim off the stern — without fighting the crowds common on larger vessels. On the other hand, Sakara is probably not the best choice for families with younger children: there’s no kid-specific programming, and you’re likely to be the only ones aboard with little ones. “Emerald Cruises yachts are recommended for people aged 12 and up, and they must be accompanied by and share a cabin with an adult aged 18 or [older],” a spokesperson shared with T+L.

Accessibility

Sakara is probably best described as somewhat accessible: the ship has elevators to all decks and the crew was, on my trip, very accommodating to those with mobility challenges. There are handrails throughout, and bathrooms feature shower grab bars. That being said, several areas of the ship — the outdoor dining terrace, for example — require navigating at least one step even once you’ve reached the deck in question by elevator. “Due to the nature and size of the ships, wheelchairs and scooters are not allowed to be used on board,” a spokesperson told T+L. When the ship is at anchor, it’s only possible to go ashore by tender or Zodiac, both of which could be challenging for those with limited mobility. As Emerald’s FAQ explains: “Guests with limited mobility will require help from a companion, since the crew is limited.” Also of note: many announcements are made only by loudspeaker with no hearing-impaired alternative.

Is This the Most NSFW Moment in Below Deck History?

The October 10 episode of  Below Deck Med  includes a charter guest moment that leaves even Captain Sandy shocked.

below deck sailing yacht uncut

All aboard for another wild charter on Season 7 of  Below Deck Mediterranean .  And this time, things are about to hit a whole new level of NSFW.

How to Watch

Watch Below Deck Mediterranean  on Mondays at 9/8c and next day on  Peacock . Catch up on the Bravo app .

Don’t believe us? Well, as you can see for yourself in the above preview of the October 10 episode of  Below Deck Med ,  Captain Sandy Yawn and the crew learn just how NSFW (or for many places, for that matter) these charter guests will get as they very quickly go from clothed to nude for some activities.

“Should we get naked first?” they ask, and then proceed to go for it, because why not? They seem very much in vacation mode.

“Oh my god. They’re completely nude in the chairs,” Captain Sandy observes after the guests strip down right in front of the crew, specifically Storm Smith , who shares in an interview that he is really trying to maintain a professional demeanor amid the moment.

Check out what we mean in the preview clip above. But that’s not the end of the wild times, as a BDSM-themed party is also on the agenda and the crew is definitely prepping for “a lit couple of days.”
