Practical and easy to follow

The theory covered and practical lessons made the actual on the water skipper course so much easier.

Really Interesting. I took this deliberately as a refresher. Great Explanations and accompanying graphics

Very comprehensive. Engaging and sometimes hilarious content.

This course brought to life the duties of a skipper on a sailing vessel.

Very complete, interesting and fun!

Excerpt from the course

Module 4 Rigging and Sails- Excerpt:

The following illustration shows the parts of the sail and associated control lines. Of note is the bolt rope which is one of the few actual ropes on a boat (another is the bell rope).

  • The bolt rope provides strength to the luff of the sail and is used also to slide into the track if there is one. On a head sail the bolt rope provides strength to the luff of the sail when "hanks" are used.
  • Hanks are basically sliding clamps that slide up the forestay and are clamped onto the bolt rope at the leading edge (luff).
  • The main halyard is attached to the head of the sail and is used to pull the sail up the mast.
  • The gooseneck is a swivel connection from the boom to the mast.
  • The reefing points are points where the sail can be pulled down in order to reef the sail if a roller furling system is not used.
  • The topping lift holds the back of the boom up.
  • The boom vang holds the boom down when beating to the wind. On downwind legs, the boom vang can be loosened to provide more shape to the sail.
  • The cunningham pulls the sail down tight and is used also when reefing.
  • The outhaul line is attached to the clew to pull the sail out along the boom.

Click on a letter to show the name - click again to hide. Then test yourself.

Module 5 Rules and Safety- Excerpt:

In the video below, you can see two sailboats on a collision course. The sailboat on a port tack correctly changes course to avoid the sailboat on a starboard tack. The port tack boat also could have turned to starboard to duck in behind the other boat. However, in this case, it chose to tack. The decision to tack or duck is up to you.

Module 6 Slip Departures and Returns - Excerpt:

(3) Wind pushing into the dock and current from behind.

sailboat leaving the dock

This is a little more tricky. If you try to go out forward the wind could potentially push you into other boats. Additionally, as you turn the wheel to head out, the rear of the boat will swing around towards the dock and other boats. therefore it is recommended that you reverse out using a spring line.

(A) Once you are confident in your plan,

  • Appoint a crew member to use a fender at the front of the boat to prevent the boat from touching the dock.
  • Release and stow the dock lines but leave one spring line from the dock near the center of the boat attached to the front of the boat.
  • The spring line should be arranged so that it is attached to the forward cleat, runs freely around the dock cleat, and returns back to the appointed crew member. In this manner, the crew member can release the line and retrieve it by letting it slip around the dock cleat. ENSURE that there are no knots in the line to get caught on the dock cleat as it runs through.
  • Turn the wheel towards the dock and engage the forward gear.
  • This will have the effect of pushing the rear of the boat away from the dock.

(B) Once the boat has turned out from the dock, engage reverse and have your forward crew member release and retrieve the spring line.

(C) Continue backing out to be completely clear before engaging forward gear. Remember the rear of the boat will swing back towards the dock once you engage forward and turn the wheel to windward, so ensure there is plenty of room.

Module 7 Sailing - Excerpt:

Conversely, when you ask the wind to bend too much, the wind will spawn off creating turbulent airflow. This reduces the effect of the sails and slows the boat. The higher the velocity of the wind the less the wind tends to bend. This is one of the reasons why in high wind conditions you need to reduce the size of the sail. Since the sail is smaller when reefed, the wind is required to bend less over the distance from the front (luff) of the sail to the back (leech) of the sail and therefore the wind will not break away from the sail as much. Once the wind breaks away from the low-pressure side, as shown in the diagram below, you're reducing efficiency. In the same way, an airplane will stall. When the flow of air breaks away from the top side of the wing, the lift is lost and the plane quickly aims itself at the ground. In sailing, the result is less dramatic. Simply let the sail out and the wind will reattach to the leeward side of the sail.

wind over stalled sail

Module 9 Anchoring and Mooring- Excerpt:

Care must be given to swing. As the wind changes during the night, your boat will move with the wind and can put you into a precarious situation by being too close to the shore. Many times you'll find an anchorage area with moorings. Remember that boats tied to moorings swing less than anchored boats. In this circumstance, you may swing into other boats. The golden rule is "watch your swing".

anchor swing

In addition, consideration must be given to the tide. As the tide "ebbs" out, you not only get closer to the bottom but your swing circle grows and the shore becomes closer. This diagram shows your swing path with deep water and the correct scope.

Module 10 Emergencies - Excerpt

Deep Beam Reach

  • Bear away to a broad reach
  • Trim the main sail for speed, furl, or drop jib.
  • Sail a beam reach toward the victim.
  • Make the final approach to the leeward of the victim.

Each Module has associated with it approximately 20 test questions. Here is an example?

Q Who has the Ultimate right of way in this scenario?

giveway rules

You will find the answer to this question in Module 5 of the Skipper Course.

Upon passing all the tests associated with each module, your NauticEd Sailing Certificate is automatically updated. This is not a USCG Captain's license . It is an acknowledgement that you have passed the NauticEd Skipper Course which is recognized by charter companies worldwide.

Sea talk testimonials

The Electronic Navigation course is far more in-depth than I expected. Because of the remarkably affordable cost of the course, I feared that it may be far less comprehensive. I was very pleasantly surprised at how challenging and informative it is. I now find myself trying something I learned from the NauticEd academics every time I go sailing. Dan D , Student - Alabama

Dos and Don’ts of Cruise Dresses

Do’s:.

  • Do Check the Dress Code: Always check the specific cruise line’s dress code . Each cruise may have different guidelines for casual, semi-formal, and formal nights .
  • Do Opt for Versatility: Choose dresses that can be dressed up or down with accessories. This way, you can adapt to different occasions without overpacking.
  • Do Consider Comfort: Select dresses that are comfortable for extended wear. Think about breathable fabrics and comfortable fits, especially for daytime activities.
  • Do Pack a Formal Option: Even if it’s just one, bring a formal dress for special evenings like captain’s dinners or gala nights.
  • Do Think About Layers: Be prepared for varying temperatures. A light shawl or cardigan can be perfect for cooler evenings on the deck.
  • Do Play with Color and Patterns: Cruises are a great opportunity to wear vibrant colors and fun patterns that reflect the joy and relaxation of a holiday.
  • Do Choose Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics: Look for fabrics that are less prone to wrinkling , as it can be challenging to iron clothes on a cruise ship.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t Overpack: Avoid packing too many dresses. Consider the length of your cruise and plan outfits that can be mixed and matched.
  • Don’t Ignore Comfort for Style: While looking great is important, don’t sacrifice comfort, especially for dresses you’ll wear all day.
  • Don’t Forget About Footwear: Avoid choosing dresses that don’t match the shoes you’ve packed. Comfortable yet stylish footwear is essential.
  • Don’t Disregard Cultural Sensitivities: If your cruise stops in various countries, be mindful of local customs and dress codes, especially in religious or traditional sites.
  • Don’t Overlook Daytime Attire: Remember that daytime on a cruise is just as important. Pack casual dresses suitable for excursions and relaxing on the ship.
  • Don’t Neglect Dress Length: For formal nights, a longer dress might be more appropriate, whereas shorter dresses can be ideal for casual settings.
  • Don’t Underestimate the Wind: On a cruise ship, it can be windy. Choose dresses that won’t easily fly up and cause discomfort or embarrassment.

By following these dos and don’ts, you can ensure a stylish, comfortable, and appropriate wardrobe for your cruise adventure.

Understanding Cruise Dress Code

One of the exciting aspects of a cruise vacation is dressing up for different occasions on board.

Cruise dress codes can vary from one cruise line to another and even between different ships within the same cruise line.

To ensure you’re prepared for any dress code scenario during your cruise, it’s essential to understand the different dress codes and pack accordingly.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the cruise dress code:

Casual Wear

  • Daytime: During the day, casual attire such as shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, swimwear, and flip-flops are generally acceptable. However, make sure to cover up when you’re not at the pool or beach when on board.
  • Evenings: For casual dinners and evenings, resort casual attire is typically recommended. This includes slacks, khakis, jeans, blouses, polo shirts, and casual dresses. Comfortable footwear like sandals or closed-toe shoes is also suitable.

Smart Casual or Resort Casual

  • Daytime: Similar to casual wear, resort casual attire works well during the day.
  • Evenings: For smart casual dinners and evenings, men can opt for collared shirts, dress slacks, and loafers. Women may choose from dresses, skirts, dressy tops, or tailored pants. Avoid jeans, t-shirts, and flip-flops in the dining areas.

Formal or Elegant Evenings

  • Daytime: Even on formal nights, daytime attire remains casual.
  • Evenings: On formal or elegant evenings, cruise lines often encourage passengers to dress up. Men can wear tuxedos, suits, or dress shirts and ties. Women can choose from evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or elegant pantsuits. Remember to pack appropriate footwear, such as dress shoes or heels.

Themed Nights

  • Many cruises host themed nights, such as tropical or 80s-themed parties. These provide a fun opportunity to get creative with your wardrobe and join in the festivities.

Specialty Dining

  • Some cruise lines offer specialty dining venues with dress codes that may require more formal attire. Be sure to check in advance if you plan to dine in these restaurants.

Practical Considerations

  • Don’t forget to pack swimwear, cover-ups, and appropriate footwear for poolside lounging and shore excursions.
  • Consider the climate and itinerary of your cruise. If you’re visiting cooler destinations, bring appropriate layers and outerwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are essential for shore excursions and exploring ports of call.

Cruise Line Specifics

  • Each cruise line has its own dress code policy, so it’s crucial to review their guidelines before packing. Some cruise lines are more relaxed, while others have stricter dress codes for formal nights.

Laundry and Dry Cleaning

  • Most cruise ships offer laundry and dry-cleaning services (at a cost). This allows you to re-wear clothing and pack lighter.

Packing Tips

  • Plan your outfits in advance to ensure you have appropriate attire for each day and evening.
  • Roll your clothes to save space in your suitcase and minimize wrinkles.
  • Don’t forget accessories like jewelry, scarves, and belts to elevate your outfits.

Remember that cruise dress codes are intended to enhance the overall experience and atmosphere on board.

While adhering to the dress code, also focus on comfort and personal style to make the most of your cruise vacation. By packing a variety of clothing options, you’ll be well-prepared for any dress code scenario during your cruise.

  • While you can choose not to participate in formal night activities, dining in the main dining rooms may require adherence to the dress code. Specialty dining venues often offer more flexibility.

4. What should I wear on casual nights?

  • Casual nights typically allow for resort-style clothing, such as khakis, slacks, dresses, and casual tops. Avoid swimwear, tank tops, and flip-flops in dining areas.

5. What is smart casual attire for a cruise?

  • Smart casual attire includes collared shirts, dress slacks, dresses, skirts, and dressy tops. It’s a step up from casual wear but not as formal as elegant attire.

6. What should I wear on formal nights?

  • On formal nights, men can wear tuxedos, suits, or dress shirts with ties. Women may choose from evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or elegant pantsuits.

7. Can I wear jeans on a cruise ship?

  • While jeans are generally discouraged in dining venues on formal and smart casual nights, many cruise lines permit them in casual dining areas during the evening.

8. Are themed nights common on cruises?

  • Yes, many cruises host themed nights like tropical or 80s-themed parties. These are fun opportunities to get creative with your wardrobe.

9. Can I do laundry on a cruise ship?

  • Most cruise ships offer laundry and dry-cleaning services, making it convenient to re-wear clothing and pack lighter.

10. How can I avoid overpacking for my cruise?

  • Plan your outfits in advance, focusing on mix-and-match pieces. Check the cruise itinerary to pack appropriately for shore excursions and varying climates.

11. What should I wear on a cruise shore excursion?

  • Dress comfortably and consider the activity. For beach excursions, bring swimwear and cover-ups. For city tours, wear comfortable walking shoes and lightweight clothing.

12. Can I wear shorts in the main dining room on a cruise?

  • On casual and smart casual nights, cruise lines often permit shorts in the main dining room. However, it’s best to check the specific cruise line’s policy.

13. Can I wear flip-flops to dinner on a cruise?

  • While flip-flops are suitable for casual daytime wear, they are typically discouraged in dining areas during dinner service.

14. Should I pack formal attire for a cruise with no formal nights?

  • It’s still a good idea to bring some dressier clothing for specialty dining or themed nights, even if there are no formal dress code nights on your cruise.

Love your Blog. I do have one suggestion, would you please show samples of what to wear for those of us over 70 who do not wear the cute sleeveless tops and dresses?

' src=

Absolutely! Thanks for your suggestion 🙂

Outfits for the 70+ woman who is also plus size and cannot wear sleeveless or strapless. I’ve had a mastectomy and wider straps work better over spaghetti straps.

Designer Cruise Dresses

If you’re going on your first cruise, figuring out what to wear for the formal events can feel like a daunting task. There’s the Captain's dinner, dinner in the main dining room, and other snazzy cruise events you want to stand out for.

To avoid sticking out among the crowd, it’s important that you find the right cruise formal wear to bring with you on your exciting vacation. Understanding the different cruise events and the cruise line’s dress code is key before stocking up on garments.

Nevertheless, participating in formal events on cruise ships is fun! For most people, it allows them to dress up and wear designer cruise dresses they wouldn’t typically wear.

Formal Cruise Event Attire

Before you buy clothes to wear, it’s best to look at the dress code your particular cruise line has set. Cruise ships have hundreds of events happening every night and certain events may have different codes than others. Some dress codes can be “resort casual,” “smart casual,” or “formal” for certain events or daytime wear.

Typically, there are one or two dinners aboard the ship that require formal wear, mainly dinners. Depending on how long your cruise is, there will be somewhere between one and three dinner nights where formal wear is the dress code. Other events that may require you to dress up formally could be the casino or shows.

When a cruise line has a “formal” dress code requirement, it typically means men wear suits or tuxedos and women wear  gala dresses and  evening gowns .

Styles To Bring On a Cruise

Cruise lines and luxury cruise lines are your place to make a statement with the type of designer cruise gowns and styles you bring along with you. Staying on top of the trends is another factor to consider when finding the right cruise ship dresses.

For spring or summer colors, the trending tones seem to be pastel colors, specifically  soft pink and  blue tones . Colors to stay away from onboard a cruise ship are  brown or warm tones relating to this color.  Black , however, is an exception.

Navy , white, and lighter colors are the perfect tones to choose for your nautical voyage. When it comes to patterns and styles, off-the-shoulder dresses, halter tops, spaghetti straps, and sequins can add beauty to your sophisticated look.

Why Buy From NYD?

Decide on either softer colours like our silk kaftan tie dye black and rose pink tones or vibrant oranges and aquas as your colour palette.  Then, pick three Lindsey Brown resort wear styles. Choose from either the Daiquiri loose floaty kaftan or the Havana silk maxi kaftan. Add in one cotton maxi dress or a cotton drop waisted dress, a floaty opaque loose silk designer kaftans  like Rhodes for a day off the boat visiting a Caribbean beach and you will have created the start of your own comfortable and relaxed cruise wear look on your tropical paradise holiday.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

No matter the season, Madewell has long been the shopping destination for classic, breezy apparel that channels an effortless vibe through elevated basics and thoughtful silhouettes. However, the retailer is particularly well-suited for the warmer months, as its offerings for spring are some of the most stylish we’ve seen this year — as well as perfect for building a dream packing list for your upcoming travels.

Below, we’ve rounded up the 12 best travel wardrobe pieces hiding within the Madewell sale section, from flowing maxi skirts to the best, packable crossbody purse for avoiding theft. Whether you prefer to equip your suitcase with the basics or are instead looking to add some fun prints into your repertoire, there’s sure to be something for everyone here. And with discounts up to 71 percent off, you’ll be able to stick within your budget as well.

The Emmett Wide-Leg Crop Pant

Simple denim will never go out of style, but if you really want to upgrade your travel wardrobe this spring, these bright cotton pants will certainly do the trick. A best-seller at Madewell, these cropped pants add a bold pop of color to any outfit, instantly creating a more visually interesting look — all while keeping you comfortable while you’re sightseeing, shopping, or going out to dinner. The high-waisted design is effortlessly flattering on a wide range of body types, and a forgiving stretchy material ensures you’ll never feel restricted by your clothing. Best of all, the style is also available in petite and tall sizes.

Pleated Short-Sleeve Top

Veer away from simple T-shirts this season with this stunning pleated top that shows that the resurgence of the peplum trend doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Another best-seller, this adorable top is adorned with buttons down the front and the perfect cropped fit to hit at just the right spot above your high-waisted pants. Wider sleeves allow for a comfortable range of movement if you’re wearing this on a flight and need to be able to remove your suitcase from the overhead bin with ease, and with five gorgeous shades to choose from (at varying sale prices), your wardrobe is about to get a major upgrade.

The Piazza Crossbody Bag

Everyone needs a reliable purse to bring on every vacation that will keep their belongings safe, and we’re confident that the Piazza Crossbody Bag is just that. By nature, a crossbody is one of the most secure purse styles to ward off potential theft, and with a long adjustable strap and a drawstring and magnet closure, this pouch is practically made for travel. Plus, it’s large enough to carry everything from the basics (wallet, phone, and keys), to a tablet, a camera, or even a book if you desire.

Cropped Cargo Jacket

If you struggle to find the perfect jacket for spring that’s just warm enough without causing you to overheat, fear not, because this cropped cargo jacket is here to save the day. The casual design makes it well-suited to wear with anything from a simple pair of jeans to a flowing maxi dress for all of your upcoming occasions. Seeing as it’s made from 100 percent cotton, you can rest assured that this jacket will be with you season after season while staying in impeccable condition no matter how many trips you pack it for.

Satin Maxi Slip Skirt

There are few pieces quite as versatile as a breezy maxi skirt, so we suggest snapping up this best-selling essential while it’s on sale for as little as $74 in four spring-ready shades. This wardrobe staple is made from a breathable blend of polyester and viscose that creates the perfect drapey finish that elevates anything it’s paired with. An elastic waistband keeps this skirt comfortable above all, so from the airport to the streets of your destination, you’ll be able to take it all on in style.

Katrina Crop Vest Top

Menswear style isn’t going anywhere this spring, and this endlessly cool vest top is guaranteed to become one of the most reached-for pieces in your closet whether you’re traveling or getting dressed up for a day of running errands. A blend of tencel and polyester keeps this top from wrinkling as much as other fabrics (a major win for travelers), and while the flattering fit makes it easy to dress up, it can also be worn with something as simple as a pair of jeans and sneakers to give your street style some edge.

Crinkle Cotton Dolphin-Hem Shorts

Denim shorts are certainly not loved by everyone, so if you still want to show off your legs this season without slipping into rigid, unforgiving material, these best-selling cotton shorts are for you. The pull-on design makes them ideal for travel days when you’re in a hurry or are simply aiming to build an outfit that’s both comfy and cute, and a mid-thigh length means chafing will be kept to a minimum. Just snag the matching button-up shirt and you have your new go-to travel outfit for spring.

Ribbed Polo Cardigan Sweater

There’s a special place in any wardrobe for a cozy cardigan to wear from your flight to a day of activities during your travels, and this ribbed option from Madewell is here to vie for that spot — especially while it’s on sale for $80. This top stands apart from other cardigans due to the polo-style collar and pocket details, while a slightly cropped length is great for when the weather begins to warm up if you don’t want to be swimming in excess fabric. Wear it with jeans, over a dress, or styled with a maxi skirt, but you can rest assured that this sweater will always allow you to look your best.

Superbrushed Pull-On Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are one of those styles that always look pulled-together while still capturing the comfort that’s essential to any good travel wardrobe. This pull-on, cropped jumpsuit is no exception, and just in time for spring it’s now on sale at Madewell for $75. Its ultra-soft, brushed material is one of the major highlights of this piece, while the pull-on design promises to maximize your overall comfort while flying, so you don’t have to worry about too-tight fabric digging into your skin. It’s perfect for layering or wearing on its own, but no matter how you style it, this best-selling jumpsuit is sure to be an asset.

Signature Poplin Oversized Shirt

Whether you choose to wear it as a beach cover-up or a breezy top layer for a day of sightseeing, this oversized button-down shirt is guaranteed to play numerous roles in your spring wardrobe, and right now it’s available for just $40 at Madewell. A simple striped shirt will never go out of style, and the quality cotton that this option is made from only further confirms that it will occupy a valuable slot in your closet (or packing cubes) for years to come. This shirt is the peak of versatility as it can easily be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, so no matter what’s on your agenda, you’ll always be prepared when you have it in your suitcase.

Madewell x Reebok Unisex Club C 85 Sneakers

Take your sneaker game to the next level this spring with this comfy and cool collaboration from Madewell and Reebok that’s so stylish, it’s selling out fast. Currently on sale for $68, these well-cushioned shoes boast durable leather exteriors and cushy, padded tongues that will feel comfortable from the very first wear. Supportive insoles provide everything you need to feel fresh on your feet during a long day of touring a new city, and spacious toe boxes give you space to spread out for a more natural fit. The reign of plain white sneakers has finally come to an end.

Wide V-Neck Midi Dress

It’s a safe bet that at least one night during your travels you’ll want to go out for a slightly nicer dinner, and when that time comes, you’ll be happy to have this stunning midi dress in your suitcase, ready to go. All ASA 106 courses require previous certification in ASA 101, 103, and 104. These are earned as part of Course A - Bareboat Skipper or Course A+ Cat: Bareboat Catamaran Skipper. Also requires previous certification in ASA 105 - Coastal Navigation, or concurrent registration in Course N: Coastal Navigation Home Study.

Advanced Coastal Skipper (Monohull) - ASA 106

St thomas, usvi, advanced catamaran skipper - asa 106, asa 114, fort lauderdale, fl.

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

Internally Routing a Dropper Post Without Getting Frustrated: 10 Tips

routing a dropper post

Since it came pre-routed on my trail/enduro bikes, the first time I actually had to do this by myself was when I decided to route it through the frame of my cross-country hardtail.

Different Dropper Posts

What’s relevant for this conversation is how a dropper post is activated. There are three types, mechanical, hydraulic, and electric dropper post.

Mechanical ones use a cable to pull the lever which activates the dropper post. This article is mostly about mechanical dropper posts because they are the most common out there.

Hydraulic dropper posts use oil same as hydraulic brakes. The fact is these cable routing tips and tricks apply to hydraulic dropper posts as well. To route a hydraulic hose you need to pull it through with an already routed cable.

Electric ones are made wireless. There is only one model on the market at this point and it is Magura Vyron wireless dropper post.

Different Frame Types

There are frames that have internal routing for a dropper post only through the seat tube, but this wasn’t one of those. I was actually glad it wasn’t because it looks a lot better this way, but as you can expect, it’s a pain to install.

Some manufacturers also add guiding tubes through their frames for easier routing. However, those are quite rare. No one is particularly fond of that added weight.

I could’ve gone to a bike shop and have someone more experienced do it for me, but I’ve decided to try my own luck. Luckily I worked at the bike shop and I’ve seen other mechanics struggle with it so I knew exactly what to expect.

Turns out, it’s not that difficult if you can predict everything that can go wrong in the process. That is after you get angry a few times because you have no idea how and where the cable got stuck inside the down tube.

I’ve done it multiple times since then, and it gets really easy after first few tries. I’ve decided to share some tips that can save you from wasting time and keep the frustration at bay.

10 Tips on Internally Routing Your Dropper Post

Table of Contents

1. Route The Cable First

The only way I’ve ever seen, and probably the only way possible is to route a cable first and then use it to lead the cable housing through.

Usually, it’s easy to use the dropper cable itself, but sometimes it gets tricky to control it when you start to lead the housing. Most likely you won’t be able to hold the cable’s end it might get pushed and twisted inside. Getting stuck like that is annoying so I used to add some oil in the housing to smooth it out.

Nowadays, I’m using a separate cable which is very long. Long enough to let me guide the housing through while keeping the cable ends pulled so it stays tight. The other end I simply tie to the handlebar, if necessary.

Once the housing is routed, I can pull this spare cable out and insert a new dropper cable inside. By this point, the process is almost complete. To cut the housing and cable to a proper length you should always use the manufacturer’s instructions.

For hydraulic dropper posts use the cable end cap and partially stick it inside the hose. It’s a good idea to tape it a bit as well so it doesn’t come loose. Then simply use the cable to slowly pull the hydraulic hose through the frame.

If the hose is pre-bled simply tape it really good to the cable but make sure to smoothen the edges a bit with the tape so it doesn’t get stuck on those.

2. Take The Bottom Bracket Out

Not every frame requires this, some make it easy to twist and turn the cable and housing around there and some don’t.

I’ve found it to be a good thing to do no matter how the frame is built. This way it’s easier to make sure the cables are properly routed and not twisted somewhere inside.

Some of you might not have the tools or knowledge to do this, so if it’s not required on your frame maybe it’s best not to mess around with it. However, if you are taking the bottom bracket out, make sure you properly grease everything before putting it back.

The only time you should avoid taking the bottom bracket out is if it is a press-fitted one. Simply because unless you know exactly how to do it, you can easily damage the bearings or the frame. It requires a proper tool, technique, and experience.

3. Avoid Tangling With Shifter Cables

One time I’ve routed it quickly without taking the bottom bracket off, only to find that when I shift my rear derailleur the dropper post gets activated. Sound weird but it’s a common problem if you are not aware of the possibility.

If you are simply pushing the cable through it’s easy to tangle it with the already routed shifter cable. The easy way to check if that happened is to try shifting gears after you routed the dropper cable through and see if there is any tension on the dropper cable. If there is moving tension on a dropper cable while shifting gears then it’s tangled and you need to do it all over again. It’s better to check for it at that point than routing the housing and set it all up and then finding out that you’ve made a mistake.

That’s one of the reasons why I recommend taking the bottom bracket out, makes it much easier to avoid tangling.

4. Cable Is Getting Stuck

I’ve found that different frame manufacturers may leave a frame smooth or rough on the inside. When manufacturing a frame, they use bladders and depending on their bladder control there might be some rough patches or frame pieces sticking out that will block the cable from going through.

In this case, I try to push the cable by quick stabbing motion while twisting it at the same time. This will quickly push and twist the cable end and it should go around whatever is blocking it. However, if it is the shifter housing that’s blocking it then you might end up with a problem I described in a previous section.

5. Using Air Pressure

This trick is useful if you are not taking the bottom bracket out.

If you have a compressor you can seal all the holes in the frame except the two you are trying to route through. Then when you insert the cable you can start blowing air in that hole and slowly push the cable inside. The air should exit on the opposite hole if you sealed everything off properly. That airstream will help guide the cable end through. It’s especially helpful around the bottom bracket part.

It’s necessary to use a compressor because the airstream has to be continuous. To seal the holes some duct tape should be more than enough since you shouldn’t need too much air pressure anyway.

6. Using Vacuum

This is the same trick as with a compressor but from the opposite end.

Since not many people have an air compressor at their disposal, the vacuum might be a better idea. Most vacuum cleaners are powerful enough to do this. This way it requires a bit more power than with the air pressure. It’s easy to keep the airstream along the cable line with air pressure but with vacuum, you need more power to lift the cable end and pull it in a direction you want.

The procedure is similar, seal every other hole and proceed by slowly pushing the cable inside while vacuuming the opposite frame hole.

7. Using Magnets – The Best Way

Using two opposite magnets might be the best tip I’ve ever got. You can do this if your frame is made out of aluminum or carbon.

They need to be of opposite polarity because you want them to stick together. One of them should be small enough to go through the frame hole. I tape the smaller one to the cable’s end but tape it well, because it’s hard to pull it out if it gets loose inside. Then when the cable and the magnet are inside I use the other magnet, which is preferably a stronger one, to stick them together through the frame. You should hear a click when they connect.

This allows me to lead the cable through and find the passage where it won’t get tangled with anything. You should check for tangling anyway later.

Park Tool has an amazing cable internal routing kit  that works with magnets.

Park Tool IR-1.2 Internal Cable Routing Kit for Bicycle Frames

I’ve had the opportunity to work with it once and it’s perfect because it’s hard to find the frame fitting magnet otherwise. The only reason I don’t own this kit at the moment is because of my old custom kit with the cable and magnets is still doing the job.

8. Cable End Cap And A Hook

If you want to try your luck using a shortcut for a quick routing, you might want to squeeze the cable end cap to the end of the cable and then push and twist it to the bottom bracket. Once you are there you can use a hook made of hard wire to pull the cable around and up by hooking the end cap.

Worked for me once to quickly route the dropper but it can cause lots of problems. I recommend at least taking the bottom bracket out if this is the method you are choosing. Might save you even more time because you will avoid tangling.

9. Housing Length Problems

As I mentioned already, you should always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to cut housing and a cable to the proper length.

However, there are situations where the housing length may depend on the frame. Some manufacturers don’t predict this in their instructions.

The situation I’m talking about is when the dropper handle is on the opposite side from the hole on the frame through which the housing is routed. This will cause cable tension when you turn the handlebars to the side where the dropper handle is. It has to go around the head tube and that is where the tension happens.

In this scenario, you should leave the cable housing a bit longer on the front side so it has enough length to freely go around a head tube. You can tighten the handle and test this before cutting the housing and the cable.

10. Changing an Already Routed Cable

Changing only the cable is easy because all you need to do is pull the old cable out and insert a new one. But changing the housing as well would require repeating the whole routing procedure. Unless you do this.

First, pull the housing out and leave the old cable inside. Then simply tape the new cable to the old one and pull it through. This way, the old cable will lead the new one through and you will save yourself a massive amount of time.

If the cable end can’t go through the frame hole, you might need a spare cable. First, pull that spare cable from the opposite side through the seat tube. Then use that spare cable to tape the new one and pull it from the front. Still simple just one more pull with a third cable.

Then you can continue routing the housing on a new cable.

Wrapping Up

I’ve spent a lot of time searching and asking on forums when I needed these tips for the first time. My hope is that this will be helpful to all of you who are experiencing these problems while internally routing a dropper post.

The new Trek Slash 29 sounds rock and roll and looks stunning, but does it go like a bat out of hell? When it’s time to go fast it gets the job done.

Great sizing and geometry.

Class-leading Fox suspension.

Takes Plus-size wheels.

Looks drop-dead gorgeous.

Could easily accommodate a 150mm dropper.

Stem lengths need to be shorter.

Bontrager SE4 tyres are fast rolling with good puncture resistance, but the level of grip doesn’t match the aggressive attitude of the Slash.

New Trek Slash gets high pivot idler, more travel and a bigger door

  • September 7, 2023

Trek’s new Slash has a high pivot and mullet wheels making it trendy as loose leg trousers, but there’s more going on than just style

Trek Slash Gen 6

Need to know

  • New high pivot design and 19t idler, giving rear-ward axle path and increased anti-squat at over 100%
  • Mixed wheel size now comes as standard, with a full 29er option and 27.5in front and rear in size Small only
  • Travel up by 10mm to 170, like many of the best enduro mountain bikes
  • Geometry: head angle a degree slacker seat tube a shade stepper, and proportional chainstays across the sizes
  • Mino link geo adjust is out, instead you get BB height adjust via a lower shock bracket and angle adjust headset
  • Internal storage door made bigger, and internal cable routing concealed
  • Seven models in the range, from £4,250 for the Slash 8 up to £11,750 for the Slash 9.9 AXS T-Type

Trek has been on it over the last few years, turning over old bikes and releasing updated models faster than you can say ‘enduro race ready’. The previous generation Trek Slash only came out in 2021, while the space in between has been filled by a reworked Fuel EX , the brand new lightweight Fuel EXe e-bike and an updated full-power Rail. Trek is going places, and it’s not hanging around.

trek slash dropper post routing

Trek’s new Slash uses the high pivot design to add anti-squat at over 100% throughout the travel, ideal for keeping the bike’s shape under cornering, breaking or pedalling

High pivot design

The new Slash is a big jump from the old bike, with the most obvious change being a high pivot and idler: Something GT and Cannondale have also employed with the Force and Jekyll , and smaller brands like Forbidden and Norco have pioneered. Has Trek merely seized on the latest zeitgeist then, or are there real advantages to be gained, seconds won, and glaring holes filled from the old bike?

The benefits of running such a system are pretty well known now, Trek is better able to control the anti-squat, meaning the bike’s ability to resist compression under acceleration from pedalling or cornering. Indeed, the claims are more than 100% anti-squat throughout the travel of the bike, and very much in contrast with the old bike that lost almost all its anti-squat as it dived through the travel. There’s also a rearward axle path from the new high pivot design, without the associated chain growth and pedal kick-back problems, and the claim is suspension like this is better at eating square edged hits, like big rocks or roots.

trek slash dropper post routing

Upper idler is a biggun, at 19T, the idea being to more efficiently deliver power to the rear wheel

The more complicated chain line will inevitably lead to more drag and weight, but Trek has worked hard at the former to minimise the impact with a huge 19T upper idler. That could well prove more efficient in terms of power transfer and less prone than other idler designs to becoming graunchy when stuffed full of grit and mud. The lower idler, nearly as big at an estimated 15T, is there to ensure the chainring has enough teeth engaged to pull the chain when you turn the cranks over. Trek says there are other benefits too, like reduced chain growth, smoother performance when pedalling and no tugging on the derailleur cage.

Slash by numbers

  • 19 tooth upper idler
  • 170 millimetres of travel, up 10mm
  • 100 per cent anti-squat through the travel
  • 488 millimetre chainstay, in size Large
  • 200 millimetre dropper on size medium
  • 29 inch front wheel, 27.5in rear

Trek’s moved away from 29in wheels front and rear to today’s trendy mullet setup, which does have some advantages in terms of wheel weight, strength and rear clearance, while the size small is 27.5in front and rear. Long live the diddy wheels.

  • Which is the best wheel size? Mullet Vs 29er enduro bike

There’s also an option to go full 29er and gain more speed, with a bolt on lower shock bracket sold separately, although the snazzy new rear mudguard will have to come off. Trek has ditched its longstanding Mino Link angle geo adjust chip in part because of that bracket, which raises or lowers the bike’s BB height. There’s no need for the Mino Link either because there are angle-adjust headset cups as optional extras, to change the head angle by a degree.

That size small bike is actually a really cool addition, and one that can’t have been cheap for Trek with the need for additional frames and parts. The little bike will take a 170mm dropper post, still takes a water bottle, and might be ideal for radical rippers who think today’s bikes are too safe.

Geometry and sizing

The rest of us are well served with better geometry on the new bike, it’s half a degree slacker than the old Slash on the head tube, at 63.5°. Not much different, but with the Fuel EX moving to 64.5° Trek clearly felt the need to put some distance between them. Travel is up too by 10mm, to 170, bringing the bike into line with the best big travel enduro bikes.

trek slash dropper post routing

Frame storage is the same size, but the door’s bigger and the cables are no longer on show

Trek has gone to some effort to make riders feel at home across all its bikes too, with the Fuel EX, Slash and Top Fuel all sharing very close reach measurement – 450mm in size medium, or thereabouts, and 488mm on the size large Slash. It’s also added size-specific chainstay lengths so the bike can remain balanced fore and aft as you size up or down, and the seat tube angle is now a pedal-friendly 77°. The bike will now take a 200mm dropper even in size medium, meaning a taller rider could opt for the smaller bike now and still be in a good pedalling position. Finally, Trek’s improved the internal storage area with a bigger door, easier catch and hidden cables, while the rest of the frame gets new chainstay guard, two dual density and replaceable downtube guards, and an additional layer of carbon protection underneath the paintwork.

Hype pivot?

Working a high pivot idler into the new Slash is an interesting decision from Trek, particularly as the old bike was so darned good and descended so competently – an mbr test winner, no less. Perhaps the intention was to improve pedalling efficiency, help the bike ride higher in its travel, or merely keep up with the latest trends. We won’t know until we ride it, all we can say for now is that there are good and bad high pivot bikes, but with the Slash’s pedigree we’re betting it’s the former.

Fuel EX 9.8 Dropper post cable routing

  • Add to quote

Hey everyone. I’m replacing the dropper post on my 2017 Fuel. I’m attempting to route the new cable by taping it to the old one so that the old one correctly routes the new one. It’s getting hung up somewhere in the downtube though. I noticed that there’s a zip tie recessed into the bottom of the downtube. Is this zip tie related to the dropper post routing at all? Thanks!

When i replaced my brakes i had to cut this cable tie (there were 3 cables attached to it) one of which was the dropper post cable. The plastic bung will pull out after you have done this and you'll be able to see slightly more . Not sure about threading the rest of it though !

How did you get the tape junction past the "control freak" opening? I feel like there is a simple way to open the port, but I took the screw out and the port is jammed in there, with a hole barely bigger than the housing diameter.

Re: control freak opening. Figured out that the front derailleur tension was holding the port cover too tight...switching front into the small ring at lower tension allowed for the room to wedge the cover open enough to thread the taped housing through. Pulling it through the bottom bracket and out the seat tube was very smooth after. Cleaned off the duct tape film with ipa.

My KS Lev cable fell off the post and is now sort of stuck way down the seat tube near the bb. Pushing the dropper housing from the front is doing nothing. I am thinking I’ll need to open up the bb. Does that mean I have push out bearings and replace w new ones too?

Thanks. The metal grommet is still attached to the wire. I’m imagining there is a small space between the bb and frame, and this metal cylinder grommet is stuck there. My impression is that I’ll need a whole new bb in order to get in there, since bb92 are not reusable.

I did end up pulling the bb and reinstalling a new one (first press fit for me). Was able to feed the stuck dropper cable easily by hand thru the bb hole. Was the only solution unless I had a long long set of tweezers.

I attempted to route my dropper post cable and housing last night on my FEX 9.9 frame build. (First time doing it) What a pain in the ass! I used the plastic guide tube that was already routed through the frame to run the cable through first starting from the top of the seat post. Got it through no problems and then tried to run the housing from the front of the frame. I had no issues til I got it to the BB and sine the housing was stiffer than the cable it pushed it down and the cable got bunched up at the BB so it wasn't going to work. Pulled everything back out and then routed the housing through first. The guide tube was originally ran through the frame in front of the linkage metal tube piece that goes through the frame and it seemed like too much of a bend for the housing so I routed behind it and then got it routed through the rest of the way. Now I just need to get the cable ran through the housing without any issues I hope and install the rest of it....

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.

A streamlined design with fewer moving parts and better seals makes for a dropper post that performs consistently and requires less maintenance. The updated Bontrager Line Dropper Post is easy to set up and now even easier to service. The cable-actuated hydraulic locking design provides proven functionality for bikes with internal routing.

You can tighten the handle and test this before cutting the housing and the cable. 10. Changing an Already Routed Cable. Changing only the cable is easy because all you need to do is pull the old cable out and insert a new one. But changing the housing as well would require repeating the whole routing procedure.
