What Is a Superyacht First Officer? And How Do You Become One?

first officer yacht jobs

Want to learn more about the role of the Superyacht First Officer and how you can land your dream yacht job?

Having come from a yachting background, our team is equipped to help you land the job of a lifetime as a Superyacht First Officer. Here is all you need to know:

Superyacht First Officer

What is a Superyacht First Officer?

Typically, the Superyacht First Officer, often referred to as the Chief Officer/Chief mate is second in command to the Captain. Meaning, they work side-by-side with one another regularly. First officers face the responsibility of being able to cover the Captain when needed due to the chain of command on board. It is not uncommon for the First Officer’s duties to overlap those of the Captain, whether those responsibilities involve managing, leading, or communicating with the crew. In addition to knowledge of all deck and bridge procedures, the Superyacht’s First officer must also possess the ability to teach the crew new repair and maintenance skills.

How much is the Superyacht First Officers’ salary?

It’s hard to say a certain figure, due to yacht crew salaries changing based on the size of the vessel, the yacht they’re aboard, and so on. But realistically, for first officers, an expected monthly salary ranges from €4,500 up to €10,000.

What are the main responsibilities of a Superyacht First Officer?

Here is a more thorough list of all that is expected from a Superyacht First Officer. They have to:

  • Assist the Captain with all administrative duties.
  • Follow all safety procedures. This includes arranging regular safety drills.
  • Use bridge and navigation systems to navigate the yacht.
  • Manage the Deck Crew.
  • Maintain the deck itself. This includes being in charge of deck inventory and equipment.
  • Set watch schedules.
  • Adhere to the deck budget.

What skill sets are required to become a Superyacht First Officer?

To fulfil their role and responsibilities, Superyacht First Officers must also:

  • Have good leadership skills to lead the Deck Crew and stand-in for the Captain if need be.
  • Be a good communicator with the ability to delegate.
  • Have excellent organisation for boat handling and watchkeeping.
  • Demonstrate very strong navigational skills.
  • Have ISM and ISPS knowledge and practices.
  • Show extensive knowledge of boat maintenance. This includes knowledge of carpentry, corrosion, rope splicing, outboard motors, painting, and varnishing.
  • Have advanced water sports knowledge.
  • Demonstrate strong computer skills.
  • Basic engineering skills.

How to land a job as a First Officer:

The role of the First Officer is high up on the chain of command and therefore, experience is key. Chances are, if you’re currently an experienced second officer, you can progress to become a First Officer. However, if you’re just starting out as a yachtie, a minimum of five years of experience working in a similar role is expected of you. This can include work as a second officer, or experience as a captain on a smaller vessel.

As well as this, you must have a minimum license of OOW unlimited. MCA STCW Officer of the Watch or Chief Mate certifications are required for most First and Second officers. But, these requirements may differ under certain circumstances. And RYA or IYT certificates can be obtained for yachts of a smaller size.

Testimonials.

“I think the reason that Quay Crew is (in my opinion and most of my colleagues’ opinions too) the industry’s leading agent is down to the culture of integrity, honesty and real care that permeates your company, and the careful selection of a candidate that will stay in the job. Long may it continue. I will never hesitate to use, recommend or assist Quay Crew for as long as I’m in yachting, and after.”

Chief Officer – 70m Yacht

“Having moved into the yachting industry from the commercial sector, Sam gave me valuable feedback on my CV and routes into the industry. I can highly recommend Sam to anyone looking for their next engineering position as she does her best to make sure that the yacht is right for you.”

2nd Engineer – 52m Yacht

“Having been in contact with Caroline since the summer, I felt the whole way through my search application process that she was completely on my side and has supported me and given me the confidence to propel my career to the next level.”

Chief Stew – 60m Yacht

“I would just like to take this opportunity to express how amazing Max has been in finding myself and my partner a position on a brand-new build. Max has been such a rock star in not just finding me one job but two jobs, which I am absolutely grateful for. It’s really nice to have a crew agency like Quay Crew who are reliable, trustworthy as well as always wanting to consider your best interests. The team at Quay Crew are absolutely exceptional and I will always recommend only the best for them. ”

Captain – 30m+ Yacht

“The best crew agent I have ever dealt with…always on the ball, super efficient, attentive and always available. There are so many agencies that only care about the yachts because they are the ones paying and completely ignore the crew so I want to thank you for all your help. ”

Head of Service – 100m Yacht

“I really appreciate the communication and commitment from Quay Crew and would like to mention that Tom has been incredible throughout the process. He had a vast amount of information relating to the role and yacht and knew exactly what would suit me. I highly recommend Quay Crew.”

Bosun – 60m+ Yacht

“Quay Crew was the most professional of the agencies I was using in my search. I had constant communication throughout and the whole process was personal. I’m very happy with the placement and would recommend Glen and the team to anyone. ”

2nd Officer – 65m Yacht

“What sets the team apart more than anyone else is the open and honest dialogue as well as the feeling that we’re working towards the same goal. Rather than just being another number or CV on someone’s desk, I established an amazing rapport with Glen so that he was able to really know what my goals were and where I wanted to take my career…and he was absolutely instrumental in seeing that I achieved that by placing me on my current vessel. At some point in the future, I plan to be on the opposite side of the interview process and Quay Crew will be the first agency that I reach out to.”

2nd Officer – 80m Yacht

“I wanted to say how fantastic Tom has been in finding a job for me. From first talking to him on the phone, he gave some fantastic advice about the industry and made the whole process feel calm and easy. His communication was absolutely exemplary and he went above and beyond to secure me a job. I would highly recommend Quay Crew to anyone.”

Deckhand – 90m Yacht

“I recently completed a 4 week trip through Quay crew on a yacht that Phil placed me on. I had applied for the role through other agencies but they refused [to put me forward] and Phil was the only recruiter that I spoke to who also saw flexibility in the job requirements. It’s a pleasure dealing with a recruiter that actually understands the role and the candidates suited for it. I hope to work with Phil and the Quay crew team again in the future.”

Court overturns ruling in assault on officer

Doyle’s reversed decision said case lacked proof of aggravated assault.

The Pennsylvania Superior Court has reversed a decision by a Blair County judge that will allow the prosecution of an Altoona woman charged in 2022 with aggravated assault of a city police officer.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 12, when two officers were dispatched to 2001 First Avenue because a woman — later identified as Angela Marie Hatch — was on her porch allegedly screaming at traffic.

When the officers arrived, Hatch, 49, was sitting calmly in a chair on the porch, according to the appeals court ruling handed down Friday afternoon.

She explained to the officers she had been yelling to warn two elderly ladies attempting to cross the street that they should stop because oncoming traffic was moving quickly toward them.

One of the officers, Joshua Wilson, however, believed that the call had come from inside the house and he went to the nearby open screen door to have someone step outside — or let him in.

Hatch became angry, and, according to the Superior Court report, stated the officer had no right to enter the home without a search warrant.

She ran across the porch and “slammed the screen door on his right shoulder,” according to a summary of the case by the Superior Court.

The officer responded by pushing her face-first into the screen door and put her left arm behind her back.

She then pushed off the wall and used her right arm to hit the officer in the face, causing a scratch mark.

Hatch was then placed on her stomach, the appeal court summary stated.

As she was being placed in custody, Hatch allegedly began screaming that she had firearms in the house and was going to kill the officers.

The officers did not enter the house, noting there were no emergency circumstances that would permit them to enter the home without a search warrant.

Hatch was charged, however, with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, two counts of resisting arrest and terroristic threats.

One of the counts of resisting arrest was dismissed during the preliminary hearing on June 22, 2022, before a magisterial district judge, but the remaining five charges, including aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, were forwarded to the Blair County Court of Common Pleas for trial.

Hatch’s attorney, Assistant Public Defender Julia E. Burke, challenged the magistrate’s determination that enough evidence had been shown to warrant trial on the aggravated assault charge.

Former Blair County President Judge Elizabeth A. Doyle in April 2023 ruled that the prosecution, led by Blair County Assistant District Attorney Derek J. Elensky, did not offer sufficient proof during the preliminary hearing that Hatch had committed an aggravated assault.

Judge Doyle in dismissing the charge pointed out the officer did not have a search warrant or exigent circumstances to enter the Hatch dwelling and she found the mark on the officer’s face was Hatch’s reaction to being pushed face-first into the screen door.

Doyle concluded there was not enough evidence to show Hatch intentionally attempted to cause bodily injury to the police officer.

A Superior Court panel consisting of Judges Jack A. Panella, Megan King and John T. Bender in its review reversed Doyle’s ruling.

The testimony at the magisterial level cited the officer’s side of the story, indicating that jewelry Hatch was wearing when she hit the officer in the temple caused the scratch on his face. She also knocked off his glasses.

And testimony showed that Hatch was “threatening to kill the officers,” the appeals court stated.

“Hatch’s behavior, particularly her overly aggressive conduct, reasonably suggests that she intended to cause bodily injury,” the appeals court opinion stated.

The Superior Court Judge indicated it will be up to the trier of fact (a jury or judge) to make credibility determinations concerning the witnesses and a possible justification defense on Hatch’s part.

The panel explained that the law under which Hatch is charged reflects the state legislature’s intent to punish a simple assault on a law enforcement officer more severely than an assault on a layperson.

It is graded as a felony of the second degree rather than a misdemeanor.

The officer did not testify during the pretrial hearing before Doyle.

He did, however, testify during the preliminary hearing.

Wilson testified that the door to the residence was open when he arrived and he believed the caller was inside.

He stated he opened the screen door “just to make an effort to call in to have anyone step outside with us or permit me in.”

He testified, “as I opened the screen door Mrs. Hatch came running across the porch and slammed the screen door on my right shoulder … .”

He testified Hatch at that point was “overly aggressive.”

The officer stated he made no attempt to enter the home, stating he just opened the screen door.

Passengers line up for passport control in the UK Border area o

Hundreds of Heathrow Border Force officers to start four-day strike

More than 300 workers will take action over plans to introduce rosters that could force 250 of them out of jobs

Hundreds of Border Force officers at Heathrow airport will begin a four-day strike on Monday in a dispute over working conditions.

The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) said more than 300 of its members will walk out from 5am on Monday to 7am on Friday.

The union said the workers, based at Heathrow terminals two, three, four and five, are protesting against plans to introduce rosters they say would force about 250 of them out of their jobs at passport control.

The union’s general secretary, Fran Heathcote, said: “It’s disappointing that despite talks last week, the Home Office is not prepared to grant any flexibility to their new roster.

“None of our dedicated and highly experienced members in the Border Force want to take strike action but the way they’ve been treated by their employer leaves them with no option.

“The Home Office still have time to prevent tomorrow’s strike if they agree to abandon this unworkable new system.”

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We are disappointed with the union’s decision to strike but remain open to discussing a resolution with the PCS.

“The changes we are implementing will bring the working arrangements for Border Force Heathrow staff in line with the way staff work at all other major ports, provide them with more certainty on working patterns and improve the service to the travelling public.

“We have robust plans in place to minimise disruption where possible, but we urge passengers to check the latest advice from operators before they travel.”

The Home Office has not applied to use a recently passed law aimed at guaranteeing a minimum level of service during strikes.

after newsletter promotion

Lisa Webb, Which? consumer law expert, said: “Travellers will understandably be concerned about upcoming strikes and what this could mean for them. If you are travelling in or out of Heathrow on these days, be prepared for longer queues and delays.

“Travellers should also ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance from the date they book their trip and check the policy carefully: not all will cover them in the event of strikes by airline or airport staff, for example.”

Air Force opens applications for warrant officer jobs in cyber, IT

first officer yacht jobs

This story was updated April 25 at 4:18 p.m. to include a statement from Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall.

The Air Force on Thursday opened applications to join its first warrant officer corps in nearly 45 years as the service seeks to ramp up its technical and operational expertise in cyber and information technology operations.

The new program will train a first cohort of up to 60 airmen as subject matter experts who will advise leaders and staff on technical needs while mentoring others.

They’ll staff two new career fields: warfighter communications and IT systems operations (17W), which will plan for, deploy and secure communication systems; and cyber effects and warfare operations (17Y), which will play a similar role in cyber operations, including across the military and interagency platforms.

Air Force eyes picking first cyber warrant officer cohort this summer

Air force warrant officers could bridge the knowledge gaps between niche specialties like expeditionary communications and defensive cyber operations..

News that the service was planning to bring back warrant officers surfaced earlier this year . Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall formally announced plans for the new roles in February as part of a sweeping set of initiatives to boost military readiness and outpace China and other adversaries in future conflicts.

“We need operational units with all the capabilities they need to deter and compete with our pacing challenges and ready to enter a conflict on short or no notice,” Kendall said. “In those units we need the right mix of skills necessary for high end combat and to ensure technological superiority, particularly in information technology and cyber.”

By reintroducing warrant officers into its cyber and IT workforces, the Air Force said in a release, it hopes to address critical operational needs while retaining “highly perishable skills” in specialties for which the service has struggled to compete with the private sector, like defensive cyber operations.

“The reintroduction of the warrant officer career path reflects the Air Force’s commitment to expanding and retaining technical excellence, essential for maintaining a strategic advantage in an era defined by great power competition,” Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin said. “By investing in talent management programs that preserve proficiency and competence in our perishable and highly technical skills, the Air Force aims to ensure its readiness to stay ahead of rapidly advancing threats and safeguard national security interests effectively.”

Air Force may bring back warrant officers to boost technical expertise

A training pipeline for up to 30 junior warrant officers could be in the works to begin later this year..

Used across the Army, Marine Corps and Navy, warrant officers rank between commissioned officers and the enlisted corps and are highly trained technical experts who specialize in a single field, like intelligence or maintenance.

The Air Force phased out warrant officers in 1959 after the establishment of the senior master sergeant and chief master sergeant ranks (E-8 and E-9). Warrant officer jobs were deemed too inflexible to meet the Air Force’s personnel needs, according to the Warrant Officer Historical Association.

Those senior noncommissioned officers took on the technical duties of warrant officers as well as other work duties, like those necessary for advancement. New warrant officers will be able to focus more deeply on their specialties, an Air Force official said Thursday.

The service had considered relaunching the rank at other points in recent years, including as an option to reverse a pilot shortage , but decided that the move could prove too costly without boosting retention. Air Force officials have said they may add warrant officers into other career fields as well.

Applications for the cyber and IT warrant officer jobs are open to all airmen across the active duty force, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard who hold the rank of staff sergeant (E-5) or higher. In addition to the active duty force, warrant officers will also serve in the reserve and National Guard.

Those looking to join the communications and IT systems field must have served in a related role, like managing voice and data networks, for at least two years, and have reached a certain level of Defense Department-approved certification in information assurance, the service said.

Candidates for the cyber effects and warfare operations jobs must have “senior-level proficiency in a U.S. Cyber Command work roles” or the National Security Agency equivalent; hold certain technical certifications or have three years’ experience in system-level programming, the Air Force said.

Airmen can find specific application requirements in MyPers and apply through MyFFS .

The window to apply closes May 31, and a selection board will meet in late June to identify top candidates. Those selected will be notified in late July and will attend a new Warrant Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, by early next year. The first cohort will be split into two classes of 30.

Newly minted warrant officers will then be reassigned to operational units across the Air Force. The service doesn’t have a specific goal for the number of people it will send to each career field.

They will be paid in accordance with the Pentagon’s current pay scale , which starts at around $3,700 per month for a W-1 with two years of service or less.

“These are highly in-demand, and also extremely perishable, skills in today’s rapidly evolving landscape,” Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force David Flosi said in a statement.

“As we navigate the complexities of great power competition, our ability to adapt and innovate hinges on the expertise of our airmen,” Flosi said. “Using our airmen’s full potential is not just a strategic advantage; it’s a necessity for our Air Force’s readiness and effectiveness in the face of a challenging strategic environment.”

A previous version of this story stated that warrant officer applications were opened for active duty service. That has been updated to indicate that applications are open for the total force.

Courtney Mabeus-Brown is the senior reporter at Air Force Times. She is an award-winning journalist who previously covered the military for Navy Times and The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va., where she first set foot on an aircraft carrier. Her work has also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy and more.
