60' Hinckley Custom Yawl 1997

“CHIMERA” is an exquisite custom 60ft cruising/racing yawl sailing yacht designed by the John G. Alden Naval Architects firm, headed from 1971-2008 by distinguished Chief Architect, Niels Helleberg, when “CHIMERA” was built by Hinckley Yachts in 1997. John Alden who studied and apprenticed in 1902 with MIT’s B.B. Crowninshield, opened his own design firm in 1909. Alden’s defining, design impacting experience was a winter voyage to Boston with a minimal, mostly inexperienced crew that survived 60mph icy winds to arrive safely—boat and crew. This led to Alden’s trademark design of boats that would be “resilient in heavy seas” and be able to be sailed when short-handed. His designs are not only elegant and graceful but known for their stability and ability to be sailed single-handedly, if necessary. Today’s electronics, technology, and other modern equipment, further simplify handling.

John G. Alden’s 1913 statement of design principle; “A yacht in which the owner can go to sea for long runs without undue anxiety to those left onshore…” was the guiding principle and legacy preserved and perpetuated by Niels Helleberg, the award-winning naval architect with innovations and patents of his own contributions to naval architecture included in the MIT Alden archive. Alden yacht designs are known and desired for their seaworthy performance and seakindly, bluewater capabilities.

Hinckley Yachts is a highly innovative manufacturer of luxury sail and powerboats, founded in 1928 in Southwest Harbor, Maine. One of Hinckley’s primary innovations was to experiment with fiberglass hull construction in the mid-1950s and then commit to the strong, lightweight, moldable material with the Bermuda 40 that launched in 1960. Hinckley continued to innovate with composite material, utilizing carbon fiber and aramid—the proprietary Dual Guard technology developed in 1999, for a lighter, durable, and more efficient hull.

One of “CHIMERA’s” standout features is the custom-built glass and stainless-steel fireplace in the main salon—a feature found on the most opulent superyachts. Gleaming cherrywood contrasts with the white tongue and groove overhead throughout the yacht’s interior for a classic, elegant, and comfortable ambiance.

Storage galore, an ottoman for relaxing and a pull-out settee to port that will handle two for overnight.

Master Stateroom

A double berth to starboard and bureau with storage and bookshelves. To port is a custom built in chair with ottoman, cedar lined locker and drawer under the berth. Master head features a separate shower, sink, head and more beautiful cherry trim, teak and holly soles and teak grates.

Guest Cabin Aft

To port features a generous double berth, a bureau with drawers, vanity with mirror and cedar hanging locker.

The guest head is accessible for both aft staterooms to port with teak soles/grates and cherry trim.

Nav Station

Aft of the galley and just forward of the pilot/navigation. single berth, hanging locker and ample storage. Breaker panels can be reached from the seat.

Starboard side of the galley is the propane stove, microwave oven and excellent storage. Just after of the stove (4-Burner) is the refrigeration with freezer. Also, toaster oven, Corian counter tops and double sinks. There is a bar surrounding the galley area.

About The Hinckley Owner's Club

This site is offered as a free service the the Hinckley Owner’s Community. It has been built and designed as the official Hinckley Boat Building Family Alumni Association, by Barry Hinckley.  *** There is no present Hinckley Family affiliation with current ownership of  Hinckley Yachts, Inc. or related companies***which the family sold to a private equity firm in 1997. This site is for Hinckley owners, employees, fans, and alumni to interact share photos and memories about the boats, we all love. If a cat has 9 lives, a Hinckley has more as it passes from family to family over the years.

We also display Hinckley’s that are for sale, as Barry makes his living selling and insuring Hinckley’s. If you would like us to list your Hinckley, please contact us and we will feature it on the site.  We will shortly be adding a FSBO option, so stay tuned for that!

Barry Hinckley, a Yacht Broker specializing in used Hinckley’s and marine insurance and yacht management. Barry runs this site and records many of the Hinckley’s he encounters on his day-today travels in the world of Hinckley Yachts. When adding a hull to a model, please make sure if possible the first image that you upload is “landscape” view if possible, this will make it display better with all the other hulls of that model type. Entry to the cabin below is through the pilothouse companionway and down two steps.  The galley to port, private head to starboard and the V-berth accommodations forward.  The interior is finished in satin-varnished cherry. Cabin sole is gloss varnished teak and tulipwood.  Flat panel cherry locker doors and (5) stainless steel bulkhead lights add to the cabin ambience.  V-groove smooth overhead. 

Companionway door is louvered and the top folds out of the way and removes easily from the bullet hinges for easy storage.
