The trip to Klein Curacao takes 1.5 – 2 hours by boat each way, and the entire trip is an amazing experience. That being said, there is definitely some planning that goes along with a Klein Curacao boat trip – and that’s where this travel guide comes in!

A Klein Curacao boat trip is a great addition to any Curacao vacation. The island is so unique and it’s such a fun experience to spend the day relaxing and disconnecting from wifi and cell service.

There are tons of companies that operate boat tours to the island, and once arrived on Klein Curacao there is plenty to do for a full day.

Klein Curacao Boat Trip

1: pick your tour company wisely.

There are many tour companies that offer Klein Curacao Boat Trips. However, only two companies have structures on the island.

This is important for many reasons. The first, is with a beach structure you’ll have ample access to shade and bathrooms.

You’ll also be able to enjoy lunch on the beach, instead of having to swim back to your catamaran or boat.

I highly recommend booking your Klein Curacao Boat Trip with Mermaid Boat Trips or Miss Ann Boat Trips . Having a beach structure to relax in, access to fresh water and bathrooms, and tons of shade really made a huge difference. Especially because you’ll be on the island for many hours.

2: Bring Seasick Medicine

I’m not sure why this isn’t more heavily advertised, but the sea between Curacao and Klein Curacao is rough – and I mean really rough. I don’t normally get sea sick, and I still threw up the entire 1.5 hour trip. About 1/4 of the people on my boat trip also got seasick, and I was told that this is very common headed to Klein Curacao, as you’re going in the opposite direction of the wind and the waves.

Do yourself a favor and take seasick medicine . I literally wanted to throw myself overboard halfway through the trip because I was so sick.

I’m sure you can buy seasick medicine at pharmacies in Curacao, but to be safe, it’s a good idea to bring some with you. Click here and here for two options.

3: Pack Lots of Sunscreen

This goes without saying, but the sun is strong and since you’ll be outside all day, you’ll definitely need good sunscreen.

4: Pack a Bag With Necessities

No matter which company you choose for your Klein Curacao boat trip, you’ll definitely want to pack a beach bag with necessities. I recommend the following:

• Beach hat or baseball cap
• Underwater camera if you plan to snorkel
• Beach towel
• Portable charger
• Change of clothes

5: Walk to the Lighthouse and Ship Wreck

When you’re on Klein Curacao be sure to check out the abandoned lighthouse and ship wreck! Wear shoes because the path can be rocky, but it’s totally worth the 10-15 minute walk out to the structures.

The views are beautiful and both the lighthouse and shipwreck are very cool to see.

6: Make Sure Your Phone is Charged

You’re going to want to take lots of pictures while in Klein Curacao, so make sure that your phone is charged! There won’t be anywhere to charge it while on the island, and you’ll be on Klein Curacao for the majority of the day.

If your phone battery dies quickly, a portable charger is great to have!

7: There Is No Cell Reception or WiFi

There is no cell reception or wifi on Klein Curacao, so it’s really a place to unwind and disconnect!

8: Most Tour Companies Provide Lunch

Most tour companies will provide lunch while on Klein Curacao, either in their beach structures or onboard their catamarans or boats. If you’re vegetarian, make sure to check with the tour provider before your trip to make sure they have food options for you.

Hi Magdalena! Klein Curaçao really did feel like paradise. Most of the boat trips are a full day. They leave the dock in Curaçao between 6am-8m, and return around 3pm or 4pm. That gives you between 4-6 hours on the island (depending on your tour group.) With 4 hours you’ll be able to explore the island, see the lighthouse, the shipwreck, go snorkeling and have some time left over for lunch and relaxing!

I have had some dreadful experiences when just booking with the first company I see! I’ve also been stuck with vegetarian options so this is a great extra tip!! Is there a budget alternative to the recommended excursions? 100+ euros for 4-5 net beach hours is too much (lunch and sail “happy” times doesn’t really excite me). That doesn’t mean i am not gonna do it, but under those conditions i could only do it once. Looking for something like a water taxi service, a local boatman to hire… Any suggestions?

Hi Kostas, thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, every tour/boat service I found (after doing a lot of research on different companies) was around $100. Due to the distance of Klein Curaçao from Curaçao, and the fact that the water can be rough, not every size boat tends to make the trip. Because of this, it’s generally just tour services, and not locals with boats, that offer these excursions. That’s not to say you won’t find a local to take you, but I did not see any locals offering these types of trips while I was in Curaçao. Additionally, there are no public bathrooms on Klein Curaçao, so I would advise to go with a company that at least has a bathroom on board the boat/some shade for the rides – that’s just my preference though. I’m linking Klein Curaçaos tourism website here , and they also show that the cheapest tour is around $85-$95. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Of course! So glad you found it helpful. For a car, I recommend picking one up at the airport so you can save on a taxi fare into town/to your hotel. A quick search is showing me daily rates as low as $43 in January – and I paid around $35ish per day in March. I’ve had good experiences with Hertz and Sixt, but there are a bunch of rental agencies to choose from. Merry Christmas to you too!

Upon boarding at the Village Marina & Apartments, you will be provided with a light breakfast, coffee and tea, giving you the energy for an exciting day at sea. The sail to Klein Curaçao takes approximately 1,5 hours. Klein Island is the quintessential Caribbean island—beautiful, quiet, and unmarred by the development of inhabited areas. If you are looking to get away from it all and really dive into the island vibe, there is no better place to do so.

Once we arrive, you will have the opportunity to see the historic Klein Curaçao lighthouse, visit the old, rusty shipwreck, and swim with sea turtles. Endless adventures await on this Caribbean island, where you can spend the day exploring, or simply lounging in the sugary sand under our tents and watch your cares drift away on the blue Caribbean waves.

At about 12:30 PM, you will enjoy a delicious BBQ lunch, along with different sides and salads. You can also enjoy alcoholic beverages with lunch, helping to get you into the “Easy Breezy” Caribbean spirit.

The bar is open from the moment you come aboard for non-alcoholic drinks, and alcoholic beverages are available from lunch until 4:30 PM, including whiskey, rum, vodka, beer and wines.

Of course, divers are always welcome, and are sure to enjoy the pristine water and reefs of this uninhabited island. If you want to do some Klein Curacao diving, please let us know at the time of booking. Dive gear and guide are not included, but can be provided at a small price.

Note: Departure by boat from across the roundabout Caracasbaai at  7:30 AM . Guests staying on  the West-side of the island  (airport and further West): depart from your accommodation no later then 6:00 AM due to morning traffic.

When you look at the Curacao flag you can see two stars, if you look carefully one star is smaller than the other one. This represents Klein Curacao, which it literally means small Curacao. This little piece of land sits right in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, about 40 kilometers from the main island.

The catamaran experience…

Bright and early in the morning, I personally joined an organized tour with Bluefinn, boarding a catamaran from Jan Thiel and boarding on a journey to Klein Curacao. By 8:30 we were out at sea, geared up to discover this hidden gem. The journey typically takes about 2 hours while the crew offers refreshing fruit drinks for you to enjoy.

Klein Curacao is known for its charming pink lighthouse, constructed in 1877 following the devastation caused by a hurricane that destroyed the original lighthouse built two decades earlier. This is the first sight that welcomes you as you approach the island. As you get closer the water turns clearer and more turquoise, creating an incredible picture and it is in moments like this when you truly realize the beauty of nature.

It is time to jump into the water!

Once the boat arrived, I swam towards the island but for those who preferred not to swim, Bluefinn had other options available. I had plenty of time to snorkel, take pictures, and explore the island’s artifacts. Meanwhile, the crew was busy preparing the lunch and called the tourists over to taste some delicious local food served on the boat. Bluefinn had abundantly food for all 70 people on board, and drinks were included. They offered pasta, salads, meat, and chicken using a buffet method so everyone could choose what they preferred.

After lunch, it was time to get back in the water. I enjoyed the last hours at Klein Curacao before jumping back on the catamaran for the ride back to Curacao. With drinks and music on board, I relaxed in the nets, feeling the water splashes and the waves. So, are you ready for a full day-adventure? Klein Curaçao lies 15 miles off the southeast point of Curaçao and is just a two-hour boat trip from Spanish Water . The Mermaid , a sturdy sea-going vessel, awaits passengers at the Fishermen's Pier every Monday , Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday mornings at 6:45am . Six times a week, the Mermaid takes people out to the island of Klein Curaçao for a perfect day by the sea.

When you climb aboard the Mermaid, you'll be greeted with a warm cup of tea or coffee. Captain Kees and his crew create a great atmosphere that makes you feel welcome on board!

The Mermaid sets sails along the southern coast of Curaçao. Then the Mermaid turns southward and heads out into the blue sea, towards Klein Curaçao.

From a distance, you can see Klein Curaçao's landmark lighthouse and a shipwreck that was lodged on the beach many years ago. As the boat approaches the coast, you'll see a few huts, which are used by the local island fishermen. But mostly, you'll see endless beaches of white sand, waiting to be explored by you .

Once the Mermaid has anchored off shore, you'll want to take a swim in the crystal clear turquoise water . Take a stroll and visit the historical lighthouse or collect shells on the beach. Lie out on a beach chair and catch some rays of sun or play beach volleyball on our pricate court!

Exclusive to the Mermaid , Captain Cor and his crew have the only beach house on Klein Curaçao . With a large thatched-roof patio, picnic benches and cool drinks it's a great shady shelter from the heat of the sun. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained . Stel jezelf voor op een onbewoond eiland middenin de Caribische zee, een parelwit strand dat zich kilometers ver uitstrekt, kristalhelder water overal om je heen en in het midden van dat eiland een grote roze vuurtoren…. Klinkt als een paradijs toch?

Wel, jij kunt dat zijn! Stap aan boord van de BlueFinn catamaran en ga mee met de trip naar Klein Curacao. Vertrek is om 08:00 (BlueFinn2) & 08.30 (BlueFinn), u dient 15 minuten eerder aanwezig te zijn. De reis duurt circa een uur en drie kwartier, afhankelijk van het weer. Eenmaal op het eiland, ga zwemmen, snorkelen, duiken, verken het eiland, of ontspan op het strand. Een uitgebreide BBQ-lunch wordt rond het middaguur geserveerd, wanneer de full bar ook opengaat. Wat Is Er Te Doen Op Klein Curaçao?

De reis naar Klein Curacao duurt ongeveer een uur en 45 minuten. Ontspan op een van de vele overdekte bankjes, op de rompen of op het net. Je zult zeker nat worden op het net, maar je hebt wel een plaats op de eerste rij als het gaat om het spotten van dolfijnen! Dolfijnen zwemmen vaak langs de boot, spelen in de golven en pronken met hun springvaardigheden. Op sommige dagen kan de reis wild en nat zijn vanwege de golven en stromingen, maar de beloning is onbetaalbaar!

Van verre zie je het zonovergoten bounty-eiland en de oude iconische roze vuurtoren. Bij aankomst op Klein Curacao is het kristalheldere water weer kalm, perfect om te zwemmen, te snorkelen en te duiken. Hoewel de droge manier om vanaf de catamaran naar de kust te komen met een rubberboot is, raden we je aan om een snorkel te nemen en naar de kust te zwemmen! Als je het water in gaat, zie je meteen veel kleurrijke vissen en zeeschildpadden overal om je heen! Tussen mei en augustus zou je zelfs babyzeeschildpadden hun weg kunnen zien banen vanaf het zandstrand naar het heldere oceaanwater.

Wat je kunt verwachten bij aankomst op Klein Curacao

Als je aan land gaat, verken het eiland terwijl je onderweg geniet van de zon. De afstand van het strand tot de iconische roze vuurtoren, de scheepswrakken en de ruïnes is niet te ver voor een wandeling. Doe voldoende zonnebrandcrème op en probeer daar vroeg naartoe te gaan, want naarmate de dag vordert kan het geleidelijk aan echt heet worden in het midden van het eiland.

Rond het middaguur staat de bemanning klaar om u een uitgebreid BBQ-buffet te serveren bestaande uit 3 soorten vlees van de grill (smakelijke spare ribs, kip, steak), 3 zelfgemaakte salades (pasta pesto salade, kidneybonensalade, couscous salade), brood en onze beroemde zelfgemaakte Nederlandse pindasaus!

Upon arrival at Klein Curacao the crystal clear water is perfectly calm for swimming, snorkeling and diving. Enjoy this Klein Curacao trip to the fullest with this Catamaran.

Explore the island while enjoying the sunshine. The distance from the beach to the iconic pink lighthouse, the shipwrecks and the ruins is easy to do during a walk. Put on plenty of sunscreen because as the day progresses it can gradually get really hot, especially in the middle of the island.

A beautiful catamaran and very nice staff. You were not short of anything, you could get or have drinks delivered and a nice BBQ.

It was a well-organized trip. Delicious food and drinks

Had a nice swim and it was easy to do on the island under the parasol.

The crew ensured an unforgettable day, checking that everyone was having a good time. She made it a party for young and old. Shared the necessary information and prepared a delicious BBQ. This was followed by dancing with delicious cocktails. This boat trip is recommended to everyone and definitely worth the money.

Klein Curaçao was very beautiful to see and fun to explore, and the crew on the boat was very pleasant and helpful. The breakfast and especially the BBQ lunch were very tasty and from lunch we could also use the open bar. You could party on the boat but there was also plenty of time for snorkeling, sunbathing or walking around the island

CHANGE OF RESERVATION

Changing a booking that has already been confirmed and for which you have already received the ticket or voucher is possible under certain conditions. The costs for changing a booking are normally € 15 per change. By choosing a flexible ticket directly with your booking, you pay € 5 extra once and changing a booking is free of charge up to 48 hours before the start, even if you would like to change several times.

We are just back from our first trip to Curacao. I won’t do a day by day, thought information by topic might be useful.

Transportation

Based on forum recommendations, we rented a car from D&D. Very easy to work with, the car was what we wanted (small with good working a/c!), and reasonable price compared to other places we’ve rented elsewhere as the CDW was included. Since they drive on the same side of the road as we do in the US, and the roads were overall in good shape, driving went pretty smoothly. We didn’t try the buses/vans, but would want to investigate it on a return trip (more on that in the restaurant section)

Dundu Tour of Otrobanda, recommended on forum. Our guide was a lovely young woman and very glad we picked this tour. Some amazing artwork and interesting history.

Blue Finn sunset cruise, company recommended on forum. We had a fabulous crew. When I saw there were around 55 people coming on board I was nervous it would be crowded, but the catamaran handled it fine.

Chobolobo Distillery tour. We had a good guide and it was very interesting to hear about the history and that the original still from 1896 is the only one they use!

We went to Shete Boka Park, Hato Caves , Kura Hulanda Slavery Museum, and Willemstad . Glad we did Shete Boka in the morning as by the time we were at the Natural Bridge (should’ve gone left to right, instead of right to left, as Boka Pistol has a little platform with a roof for some shade), we were very hot. But it was beautiful. Hato Caves were more extensive than I expected, and enjoyed the Indian Trail walk with the plant descriptions. Kura Hulanda Museum was also bigger than we expected and highly recommend getting the guided tour, very worthwhile and not much more expense. We spent the better part of 2 days in Willemstad (including the Otrobanda tour). It is colorful and the Queen Emma bridge is so interesting, we got to see it opened, and then waited for them to close it to see the process.

We visited 3 beaches: Cas Abao , Playa Porto Marie, and Grote Knip (twice). Well, also went early morning on a non cruise day to Playa Piscado to snorkel with the turtles and then left. If it had been too crowded I wouldn’t have gone in, but I watched the other people in the water and they were being very respectful of the turtles, not chasing or trying to touch them, so I went in and enjoyed seeing them. Cas Abao and Porto Marie we got to at 11 AM and 1:30 respectively, and what we learned was if we wanted an umbrella/be near the water, we needed to get to the beaches early (I had planned other activities those mornings). Both Grote Knip days we arrived at 9 AM and got a front row umbrella. One of the reasons I became interested in visiting Curacao was reading that the island (so far) hasn’t really been hit with the sargassum that many other Caribbean islands have seen, and we didn’t see any either and the water was amazingly clear.

Accommodation

We stayed at a condo in The Strand in Pietermaai that had many good reviews and the complex was recommended on the forum. I looked at Beau Rivage next door, but the condos had very few reviews so decided to go with The Strand. We would stay there again or keep an eye on Beau Rivage reviews, it was a lovely condo and enjoyed the location with a nice little lagoon although only used it briefly.

Because we didn’t want to drive at night/after drinks, our dinners were mostly near the condo. And our impressions are a small sample size, stayed 8 nights. As others have mentioned, the restaurants in the area are more ‘upscale’, which is not our usual preference. Food was good, but on a future trip I would like to figure out the bus/van ride in to Willemstad as there seem to be more restaurants in a lower cost range. We were a bit disappointed in the fish options (we don’t care for salmon and too lazy to deal with bones so red snapper was out as that was served whole). After hubby had 2 disappointing fish meals (we both had overcooked kingfish one night), he gave up and was happy with his meals after. I did have a few more fish dishes (mainly fried) and they were good. We had a lot of shrimp dishes and they were all cooked wonderfully. And some amazing desserts! I will be reviewing restaurants on TA so will just list where we ate if you care to see my reviews.

Rozendaels, Nultwintig, Serafina, Fish&Joy, the Avila restaurants The Pen and Blues Caribbean (these were a little less expensive)

Other areas

Dinner at Boca’s at Mambo Beach after sunset cruise, lunches at La Boheme in Punda , Plasa Bieu, Blue View Sunset Terrace near Playa Piscado, and Landhuis Klein Santa Martha after visiting Hato Caves.

We really enjoyed our time on the island, the water color and clarity were nothing short of amazing. Glad we got to see some other areas, although missed the flamingos, which I had really hoped to do. We plan to go back in the future, and again, thanks for everyone’s posts that I’ve read for months to help us with researching the trip we wanted to do.
