The shop owner is helpful, kind, and really goes above and beyond to help his customers. They hand make quality items and are a wonderful local business. We learned a lot and got quality items that totally upgraded our river experience. Can't recommend this shop enough!!!

These guys helped us out with a new raft setup last summer. Excellent customer service. Upsold us a bit, hence the 4 stars instead of 5, but still a great experience. Also, when one of our oar counterbalances broke after only a few uses, we called the shop and one of their staff left a new one outside that we could pick up & swap out later that night when we drove through Salida on the way to a river trip. Again -- excellent customer service. A well-recommended shop.

A boat shop in Salida, Colo., earns a customer service gold star

riverboat works

A few weeks ago I spent a couple of lovely days on the Arkansas River . The trip was twofold. One, myself and a couple of buddies try and get a jump on all the whitewater traffic for a fishing float through Brown’s Canyon every year, and two, perhaps more importantly I was picking up a simple custom frame for a tiny little boat my friend and I are sharing for stealthy fish missions and teaching our girls to row .

We had ordered the frame months earlier, but due to COVID backlogs Riverboat Works in Salida, Colo., said it’d take a while. No worries, I thought. It was a good excuse to head down to the Ark (as we call it) for a few days.

Now, I gotta admit I was a bit of a pain-in-the-arse customer. Not only did I want to float and fish, but I wanted to pick up my boat and frame after we took off the river the last day. Many hours after they were closed. Plus, I had hurt my back and couldn’t do much lifting.

Not ever having met me, the owner, Clint, put the frame together, made sure it fit, then completely disassembled and shrink wrapped it in a tidy little package that was easy for my old-man back to pick up solo. He also wrapped the raft with a cam-strap for easy lifting too. Not only that, he locked both up outside the shop with cables I had brought for this explicit purpose.

I mean, if that’s not customer service, I don’t know what is. To top it all off, once we put the frame together a week or so later we realized there were no oar towers included. I called and without missing a beat or asking for an invoice or photo Clint promised he’d get them right out for a two-day delivery and profusely apologized.

So if you’re in the market for a custom raft frame or boat, do yourself a favor and give the folks at Riverboat Works some thought. You won’t be disappointed.

Norilsk: The city built by gulag prisoners where Russia guards its Arctic secrets

Environmental activists are frustrated by how authorities handled a diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

Arctic suffers worst ever industrial spill

The drive from Norilsk airport to the city takes you past mile after mile of crumbling, Soviet-era factories.

It looks like an endless, rusting scrapyard - a jumble of pipes, industrial junk and frost-bitten brickwork. If you were looking for an industrial apocalypse film setting, this would be your place - but you're unlikely to get the permissions.

Norilsk was built in Stalin's times by gulag prisoners. This gritty industrial city is a testament to their endurance both of the cruelty of Stalin's regime and of the harsh polar climate. There were no thoughts then on how to build to protect the environment, just to survive it.

Vasily Ryabinin doesn't think much has changed, at least in ecological terms. He used to work for the local branch of the federal environmental watchdog, Rosprirodnadzor, but quit in June after exposing what he says was a failure to investigate properly the environmental impact of the gigantic diesel spill which poured into two Arctic rivers in late May.

At 21,000 tonnes, it was the largest industrial spill in the polar Arctic .

Despite the Kremlin declaring a federal emergency and sending a host of different agencies to participate in the clean-up, just last week Mr Ryabinin and activists from Greenpeace Russia found another area where technical water used in industrial processes was being pumped directly into the tundra from a nearby tailing pond. Russia's investigative committee has promised to investigate.

"The ecological situation here is so bad," Mr Ryabinin says.

"The latest constructions such as the tailing pond at the Talnack ore-processing plant were built exclusively by Nornickel chief executive Vladimir Potanin's team and supposedly in accordance with ecological standards, but on satellite images you can see that all the lakes in the vicinity have unnatural colours and obviously something has got into them."

Nornickel Plant and container (on the left) which had the leak. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Mining company Nornickel would disagree. It has admitted flagrant violations at the tailing pond and suspended staff it deems responsible at both the Talnack plant and at Norilsk Heat and Power plant no 3 where the diesel spill originated from.

On Thursday it appointed Andrey Bougrov, from its senior management board, to the newly-created role of senior vice president for environmental protection. It has a clear environmental strategy, provides regular updates on the status of the spill, and its Twitter feed is filled with climate-related alerts.

But what investors read is very different to the picture on the ground.

21,000 tonnes of diesel oil has spilled into two rivers in Norilsk

Norilsk used to be a closed city - one of dozens across the Soviet Union shut off to protect industrial secrets. Foreigners need special permissions approved by the Federal Security Service (FSB) to enter the region. It would take an invitation from Nornickel to make that happen and, for the past month since the spill, that has not been forthcoming.

Unlike in Soviet times, Russian citizens are now free to come and go. That's why our Sky News Moscow team were able to fly in and travel around the city, even if getting to the spill site was blocked. What they were able to film provides a snapshot of the immense challenge Russia faces in upgrading its Soviet-era industrial infrastructure, particularly at a time when climate change is melting the permafrost on which much of it was built.

The Russian city of Norilsk. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Just downwind from one of the rusting factories on the city outskirts is a huge expanse of dead land. The skeletal remains of trees stand forlorn against the howling Arctic winds. Sulphur dioxide poisoning has snuffed the life out of all that lived here. Norilsk is the world's worst emitter of sulphur dioxide by a substantial margin.

"For 80km south of here everything is dead," Mr Ryabinin says, "and for at least 10km in that direction too. Everything here depends on the wind."

Immediately after the spill, Mr Ryabinin filmed and took samples from the Daldykan river just a few kilometres from the fuel tank which had leaked. By that point the river was a churning mix of diesel and red sludge dredged up from the riverbed by the force of the leak. Norilsk's rivers have turned red before and the chemical residues have sunk to the bottom, killing all life there. Nothing has lived in those rivers for decades.

In his capacity as deputy head of the local environmental watchdog, Mr Ryabinin says he insisted that he be allowed to fly further north to check the levels of contamination in Lake Pyasino and beyond.

Nornickel at the time claimed the lake was untouched by the spill. Mr Ryabinin says his boss encouraged him to let things be.

"I can't be sure I would have found anything, but this sort of confrontation - making sure I didn't go there with a camera, let alone with bottles for taking samples, it was all very clear to me. It was the final straw."

Rosprirodnadzor refused to comment to Sky News on Mr Ryabinin's allegations or suggestions that the agency was working hand in hand with Nornickel.

Georgy Kavanosyan is an environmental blogger with a healthy 37,000 following on YouTube. Shortly after the spill, he set out for Lake Pyasino and to the Pyasina River beyond to see how far the diesel had spread.

"We set out at night so that the Norilsk Nickel security wouldn't detect us. I say at night, but they've got polar nights there now, north of the Arctic Circle. So it's still light but it's quieter and we managed to go past all the cordons."

He is one of the few to have provided evidence that the diesel has in fact travelled far beyond where the company admits. Not just the 1,200km (745m) length of Lake Pyasino but into the river beyond.

He says his measurements indicated a volume of hydrocarbons dissolved in the water of between two and three times normal levels. He thinks after he published his findings on YouTube, the authorities' vigilance increased.

Greenpeace Russia have spent the last two weeks trying to obtain samples from Lake Pyasino and the surrounding area. They have faced difficulties getting around and flying their samples out for independent analysis.

They are now waiting for results from a laboratory in St Petersburg but say the samples remain valid technically for just four days after collection and that they weren't able to make that deadline due to the authorities' actively obstructing their work.

Vasily Ryabinin and Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Elena Sakirko from Greenpeace Russia specialises in oil spills and says this has happened to her before. This time, a police helicopter flew to the hunter's hut where they were staying and confiscated the fuel for the boat they were using. Then a deputy for the Moscow city parliament tasked with bringing the samples back from Norilsk was forced to go back empty-handed.

"We were told at the airport we needed permission from the security department of Nornickel," Ms Sakirko says. "We asked them to show us some law or statement to prove that this was legal or what the basis for this was, but they haven't showed us anything and we still don't understand it."

Nornickel announced this week that the critical stage of the diesel spill is over. The company is now finalising dates for a press tour for foreign media and for other international environmentalists.

Mr Ryabinin thinks this should have happened weeks ago.

"If we don't let scientists come to the Arctic region to evaluate the impact of the accident, then in the future if anything similar happens, we won't know what to do."

A spokesperson for Nornickel said the company "is actively cooperating with the scientific community and will meticulously assess both the causes and effects of the accident."

The Russian city of Norilsk. Pic: Anastasya Leonova

Nornickel considers permafrost thawing to be the primary cause of the accident, but is waiting for the end of investigation before making a final statement, the spokesperson said.

They added that the company "accepts full responsibility for the incidents on its sites these past two months and holds itself accountable for any infrastructural deficits or poor decisions by personnel.

"The imperative is to do everything to clean up our sites, instil a stronger culture of transparency and safety in our workforce, and ensure that such situations do not occur in the future."

HHHunt looks to add 57 townhomes beside River Mill development in Henrico County

RiverMillTHs3.jpg

RICHMOND, Va. -- More homes are in the works for the massive River Mill development in central Henrico through a new section that would add dozens of townhouse units.

HHHunt Homes is planning to build 57 townhomes on an 8-acre site southeast of Woodman and Winfrey roads.

The undeveloped site adjoins River Mill proper and is just west of an 82-unit townhome section that was part of the original 2016 rezoning . HHHunt has started building those townhomes after development plans were approved in 2022.

HHHunt is under contract to purchase the 8-acre site from Winfrey Road LLC, which has owned the site since the mid-2000s and also owned the adjacent 20-acre section, part of which has been placed under a conservation easement.

Fall River's nonprofit Veterans' Kitchen moving to new home at the Liberal Club

riverboat works

FALL RIVER — For the past five years , the Veterans’ Kitchen has been serving up free lunches and companionship for locals who have served their country, along with their friends and families, first at the Corky Row Club and more recently at the Blessed Trinity Church.

Now the all-volunteer Veterans’ Kitchen, which started in 2019, is stepping into a new phase of its service to veterans with a new home in a large space at the Liberal Club on Star Street.

“It’s exciting, it’s very exciting,” said Dawn Trahan, director of the Veterans’ Kitchen and one of its founders.

“It’s the next chapter. It's like turning a page,” said veteran and active Veterans’ Kitchen volunteer Andy Goddu. “We don’t turn anyone away.”

“We’re not going to let anyone go hungry,” said volunteer Doreen Bain.

'They’re like my family': This Fall River nonprofit cooks lunch for veterans every week

How the Veterans' Kitchen and the Liberal Club work together

The Veterans' Kitchen prepares meals for 100 people every Wednesday.

Former Liberal Club president and organizer of the annual Liberal Club Holy Ghost Feast Kevin Palmer said the club facility is perfect for the Veterans’ Kitchen with plenty of parking and handicapped accessibility.

Palmer said the Holy Ghost Feast is also partnering with the Veterans’ Kitchen and is providing space for the volunteer organization to store its equipment in its pavilion.

“They’ve got their freezers over there and they will do their cooking here,” said Palmer. “The church did some electrical work and changed the locks so that they have access.”

David Cyr from the Liberal Club board said there have already been conversations about donating space at the facility so the Veterans’ Kitchen can hold fundraisers.

“They can just take the hall for the night and have some sort of party that will allow money to funnel into the Veterans’ Kitchen, so they have more capital, so they can have their own space somewhere in the city,” said Cyr.

Trahan and her volunteers have been working on the transfer from the church to the Liberal Club, and next Wednesday they will wrap up the move.

The Veterans’ Kitchen will have its grand re-opening at the Liberal Club on May 8.

While the goal is for the Veterans’ Kitchen to one day own its own building to serve veterans, Sue Nedar, the chairwoman of the Kitchen’s board of directors, said the folks at the Liberal Club have been very accommodating, as had the Corky Row Club for nearly four years and the Rev. Robert M. Nemkovich at Blessed Trinity for the past nine months.

Nedar said the partnership with the Liberal Club came about thanks to one of its members, 99-year-old World War II veteran Manny Carvalho, who is a frequent diner at the Veterans’ Kitchen's Wednesday luncheons.

“The Liberal Club loves Manny and Manny loves the Veterans’ Kitchen. That’s really how it happened,” said Nedar. “The Liberal Club members and their board of directors really does a lot to help veterans, including but not limited to donating food to the kitchen.”

Nedar said the organization is grateful for the generosity shown by the Corky Row Club and Blessed Trinity Church in the past five years.

How it started: At Fall River's new Veterans' Kitchen, free meals for those who served

Veterans’ Kitchen has evolved since its founding

Trahan and the volunteers started the Veterans’ Kitchen at the Corky Row Club in October 2019.

When COVID hit a few months later, the organization pivoted and started doing takeout for the veterans and their families until the end of the pandemic.

Trahan said the Veterans’ Kitchen was, in the beginning, mainly funded by volunteers until word spread about the organization’s mission to feed the veterans. Then donations began to come in to help run the program.

Nedar said state Rep. Alan Silvia helped secure a $25,000 earmark to help the kitchen, and recently the City Council appropriated $50,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funding.

Trahan said the money has helped Veterans’ Kitchen provide healthier and better-quality food for its weekly luncheons.

Trahan said the needs of the Veterans’ Kitchen right now is money “to fill our freezers after the move is complete.”

“Gift cards are a huge help, and that way we can go purchase what we really need,” said Trahan. “It’s almost like starting over.”

Moving into a new space, the volunteers recently had to make some expensive purchases like a new convection oven and stainless-steel tables.

“It took a big chunk of our budget,” said Trahan.

To donate to the Veterans’ Kitchen, contact Trahan at 774-526-0611.

Upper delaware scenic and recreational river encourages participation in “wear your life jacket to work” day on may 17th.

BEACH LAKE, PA – “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work” Day takes place on Friday, May 17, 2024. Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River invites the public to help save lives by showing their support for water safety.

Upper Delaware S&RR is encouraging everyone to take a picture of themselves in their life jacket while at work – whether that’s at home, in the office, in a suit, or in your jammies. Post photos on social media along with the hashtags #lifejacketatwork and #safeboating on Upper Delaware’s Facebook page @updeNPS and Instagram @upperdelawarenps. Also be sure to tag @BoatingCampaign on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Since 1980, there have been 78 drownings on the Upper Delaware River. None of these drownings occurred when the individual was wearing a properly fitted life jacket. “Life jackets can save lives and are a vital part of water safety. Wearing a properly fitting life jacket is important while participating in water activities such as canoeing, kayaking, fishing, or swimming,” said Superintendent Lindsey Kurnath. “We want all of our visitors to have a safe and memorable experience when recreating on the Delaware River”.

This annual event, hosted by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC), serves as a fun and educational way to kick off National Safe Boating Week, taking place May 18-24, which is the official launch of the 2024 North American Safe Boating Campaign. Educating river users about the safety and importance of life jackets has been a worthwhile and primary focus of both the North American Safe Boating Campaign and Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. According to the most recent U.S. Coast Guard statistics, drowning was the reported cause of death in 75 percent of all boating fatalities. Of those drowning victims with reported life jacket usage, 85 percent were not wearing a life jacket.

Whether you are an active river user, a local business, or a community organization, everyone can play a role to spread the message that wearing a life jacket can save your life. Safety on the water is everyone’s responsibility!

Wherever you are, just “Wear It!” Your participation could help save a life!

Election Predictor With Near-Perfect Record Gives Major Clue On His 2024 Pick

Josephine Harvey

Assignment Editor, HuffPost

riverboat works

A history professor whose formula has successfully predicted the outcome of all but one presidential election since 1984 has indicated that President Joe Biden is tracking to win in 2024.

Allan Lichtman, who has been teaching at American University for five decades, uses a system of 13 “keys” to the White House to make his call.

In a recent interview with the Guardian , Lichtman noted that Biden has already got two keys under his belt: the incumbency key, and the contest key, after he faced no serious contenders for the incumbent party nomination.

“That’s two keys off the top. That means six more keys would have to fall to predict his defeat. A lot would have to go wrong for Biden to lose,” Lichtman said.

He will likely make his final prediction in August, according to the Guardian.

The other keys, which are structured as true or false questions, include whether or not the incumbent candidate has been tainted by a major scandal, whether there has been social unrest during the term, whether the incumbent has achieved major military successes or failures, and whether or not the challenging candidate is charismatic or a national hero.

History professor Allan Lichtman, pictured here lecturing at American University in 2008, claims he has a perfect record at predicting elections since 1984.

Lichtman’s only blemish on his record is his prediction that Al Gore would defeat George W. Bush in 2000.

But Lichtman claims that call was nonetheless correct since Gore won the popular vote. He contends that Gore would have won the election had he not been wronged in Florida, which Bush won by a razor-thin margin, prompting a recount dispute and a highly controversial U.S. Supreme Court decision.

He was among a select few who predicted former President Donald Trump ’s win in 2016.

He noted, in his Guardian interview, that his system is “robust” because it is based on history — and unprecedented events are currently taking place.

“But it’s always possible there could be a cataclysmic enough event outside the scope of the keys that could affect the election, and here we do have, for the first time, not just a former president but a major party candidate sitting in a trial and who knows if he’s convicted — and there’s a good chance he will be — how that might scramble things,” he said.

A national poll shared by CNN on Sunday shows Trump leading Biden by 6 percentage points despite currently being on criminal trial and facing felony charges in three other indictments.
