Yacht Surveyor USCG Capt. Jim T. McKay

Need a marine survey for your yacht, boat or fresh or salt water vessel? Call Capt. Jim McKay at 404-512-8887 today.

Capt. Jim T. McKay has been surveying yachts and boats of all sizes throughout Eastern and Middle Tennessee area, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky and Virginia.

USCG Capt. Jim McKay has been a marine surveyor since 1985. What began as a curious venture developed into a full-time profession, and he now travels the Southeast region to investigate personal and commercial water vessels. He is certified with SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors). This certification keeps him up-to-date on current requirements and regulations in the boating industry.

My interest in surveying began after reading a survey on a 47′ sailboat. It was a glowing survey that led a friend to buy the boat.”

What is a boat/marine surveyor, and why should I hire one?

A qualified marine surveyor is a certified individual who performs a detailed inspection of a marine vessel, often more than 24 feet in length, to determine its current condition and seaworthiness. A marine surveyor should be hired prior to the making of an investment in boat, and it is generally required to obtain financing and/or insurance on the boat.

Whether you’re on a freshwater lake or river, or you’re in the Gulf coast or Atlantic regions, Capt. McKay will travel to your destination to perform a certified marine survey on your vessel. The process normally takes 2-4 hours depending on length of the vessel and whether or not the boat is hauled and/or a sea trial is performed. The owner is not required to be in attendance; in fact, it is preferred by Capt. McKay that he is alone to not be interrupted while completing the survey.

Protect your potential investment by hiring Capt. McKay as your marine surveyor. Whether you’re a first-time boat buyer or a seasoned one, the excitement of purchasing a boat can have you miss an impending issue on a floating vessel. Therefore, engaging a set of professional eyes will assist you in making an informed decision on the purchase of marine vessel and assure you of better sail days ahead.

My normal fee for surveys is $18.75 a linear foot, plus $80 travel. Unusual vessels or larger than normal vessels are more expensive and will be quoted individually. Houseboats larger than 58′ normally cost less than $18.75 a linear foot.

Preparation For Survey

In preparation for the survey, the owner, buyer or broker ordering the marine survey will have the vessel ready for the survey on the date and time promised. This includes having any mooring covers removed, any loose clutter removed or stored, and the vessel be cleaned both inside, if practical.

About Marine Surveys

Marine surveys are conducted on boats or yachts for a variety of reasons, and for various entities or people. Marine surveyors are, by nature of their industry standards, supposed to be impartial and unbiased. Their job is to tell the truth about a boat or yacht, as pleasing or painful as that may be. A marine surveyor’s product is a written report. The survey report should be clear, concise and relay the information needed by the customer(s). Due to the highly technical nature of a marine survey, it may (and will) include terms or jargon that are not familiar to the average boat owner, bank employee or insurance underwriter. You should have a pretty good idea what the overall condition of the vessel is and what needs to be done to make it functional and safe. If you have questions or don’t understand what the surveyor is saying, contact the surveyor and have them explain. That’s their job.

Types of Marine Surveys

  • A Prepurchase Survey is conducted when someone is contemplating buying a vessel. It is a very comprehensive “Condition and Valuation” (C&V) survey that often includes operational testing of all systems and equipment, as well as a sea trial. Its primary purpose is to provide the potential buyers with the information that they need to make an informed purchase decision. It may also be used to satisfy insurance company and bank loan requirements.
  • A Limited Condition & Valuation marine survey is often done specifically for insurance purposes. Each insurance company has their own set of requirements as to what age/size vessel needs a survey, and what the survey report should include. The information contained in an insurance C&V survey report is not sufficient to make an informed decision regarding the purchase of the vessel.
  • Appraisal surveys are used for financing, estate and divorce settlements, and donation of vessels to charities. Professional marine surveyors are recognized by the IRS, courts, banks and insurance companies as boat and yacht appraisers within their area of expertise.
  • Damage Surveys may also be performed for insurance companies, vessel owners and other vested entities. This includes determining the nature, cause and extent of damage to a vessel when something goes wrong.

Finding a Surveyor

A marine survey is a useful tool for buyers when negotiating price based on what repairs the boat needs. Additionally insurance and lending companies that need to know the true condition and fair market value of a vessel often require it.

The task in choosing a trusted marine surveyor can be challenging since it is not a regulated or licensed industry and anyone can call him or herself a marine surveyor. To complicate matters, your yacht broker can’t ethically recommend a surveyor to you.

Many insurance companies and banks require that a marine surveyor be a credentialed member of either the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) or the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS). Be sure to check for requirements prior to hiring a surveyor. NAMS and SAMS are recognized and respected marine surveyor professional associations that hold their members to a strict code of ethics and require continuing education credits to maintain membership.

ABYC Standards are the authoritative reference for evaluating issues of design, construction, maintenance and product performance and only ABYC members have verifiable 24/7 access the standards. Make sure your surveyor is one of them.

What a Good Survey Provides

The survey report should be clear, concise and relay the information needed by the customer(s). Due to the highly technical nature of a marine survey, it may (and will) include terms or jargon that are not familiar to the average boat owner, bank employee or insurance underwriter.

A Condition & Valuation survey report should contain all of the pertinent information about the vessel, including the names of the owners and/or buyers, weather conditions, location, etc. It should:

  • Identify unique markings such as the name, hailing port, hull identification number (HIN), and federal or state government registration numbers
  • Provide published dimensions of the vessel and describe its construction
  • Detail the construction of the vessel and equipment installed to the degree needed or required, depending on the purpose of the survey
  • Remark on the condition of the vessel and its systems, both in general and in detail
  • Provide recommendations for repairs or corrections needed to make the vessel function properly and safe
  • Photographs of the vessel from several angles should be included, as well as of the HIN and registration numbers. Photographs of any notable improvements or deficiencies should be included as well
  • Include the vessel’s current fair market value, and possibly its replacement value

Regardless of format, after reading a survey report, and maybe re-reading it a couple of times, you should have a pretty good idea what the overall condition of the vessel is and what needs to be done to make it functional and safe. If you have questions or don’t understand what the surveyor is saying, contact the surveyor and have them explain. That’s their job.

Buying, Owning & Maintaining a Boat or Yacht

Online articles by david pascoe , marine surveyor.

  • Viking 43 Open

Viking 43 Open

Hmmm, my kind of boat. If I were rich, I'd want to buy one of these.

It has always baffled me why, in the south, the open fisherman wasn't a more popular boat.

I mean, everyone says they like the great outdoors, but then they wrap themselves up in a closed box.

Maybe its because the ladies don't like to sweat, who knows. I don't like to sweat either, but I got to tell you, you'll do a lot less sweating on a boat like this than one where they tried to cram a house worth of accommodations into a 43 foot space. Entire Article .

All About Buying Used and Older Boats

When we were young, we just loved the idea of buying a new car. But by the time we've owned three or four of them - often without paying off the balance of last one before buying the next - eventually we discover what a tremendous waste of our financial resources this is.

When it comes to boats the situation's not much different, except now we're talking about serious money. Entire Article

Maintenance, Repairs

How to prevent your boat from sinking.

yacht surveyors inc

Tens of thousands of boats of all types and sizes sink every year, most of them at their dock. The exact number is not known because there is no agency that keeps statistics. But just ask any marine insurance company and they will tell you that the number is far too high. In fact, sinking is the number one cause of major marine losses, and one of the primary reasons why marine insurance costs so much. Entire Article

Quite a few people have written or called to tell us that they know of some proven methods of repairing bottom blisters that constitute a full and final solution.

Each of the systems and products offered by West, Ashland Chemical and International Paint were mentioned.

These, of course, are the most widely used products, but are also the most frequently involved in the failures, if only by virtue of their widespread use. Entire Article

Moisture meters on boat hulls.

yacht surveyors inc

They have had surveys performed on boats they propose to buy on which the surveyor used a moisture meter on the hull.

The surveyors gave the results of the meter readings, but were apparently unwilling or unable to provide a comprehensive explanation of those results; at best, these people told me, the surveyor’s advice was vague. Entire Article .

Core and Structural Issues

Are they fiberglass boats anymore.

It happened when I was asked by a client to attend an auction of storm damaged boats here in Fort Lauderdale.

There were two minor hurricanes and one tropical storm in Florida last year, but other than to trees, I wasn't aware of much damage having occurred.

In fact, during one of the hurricanes, I was out there with a video camera filming what was going on at several marinas.

Not much, except for a few people that did nothing to prepare. Mostly it was these people's boats that ended up in the auction. Entire Article

PRE PURCHASE SURVEYS

Pre purchase surveys form a significant part of our business. We work Globally, with assignments in the last 12 months in the USA, Hong Kong, South Africa, Northern Europe and all over the Mediterranean. We only survey yachts larger than 40 metres, whether motor or sailing yachts. We have extensive experience in surveying yachts larger than 70 metres. The largest yacht that we have surveyed to date is 124m. However, given the team’s experience and our highly scalable survey system, we are happy to survey much larger yachts.

We pride ourselves on our responsiveness throughout all stages of the survey process. This means that you will receive a fully costed proposal within 48 hours of your request. It means that we will do our best to accommodate even the tightest of timelines. And above all, it means rapid reporting: the buyer’s team are kept abreast of progress during the survey. A final written report is generally issued within 3 working days of our team stepping off the yacht.

We pride ourselves in embracing technology to optimise the survey process. Our cloud based survey platform not only enables us to deliver industry leading reports within time timeframes, but it also offers the buyer’s team a uniquely powerful tool to understand issues, solutions, priorities, costs and timeframes. The software can also greatly assist with post-closing transitions to new yacht managers and also with refit planning.

For our clients, we aim to offer a seamless service from first enquiry, through survey planning, execution, reporting and follow up.

For the yachts that we survey, we pride ourselves on being easy to work with: efficient, organised, polite, easygoing and experienced. All our surveyors have served at sea themselves.

At any one time we are engaged in supporting a wide range of ongoing claims, including fire, floods, groundings, collisions, allisions, paint damage, lightning strikes, extreme weather damage, tender damage, machinery breakdown, abnormal corrosion, latent damage and design defects. The only claims that we don’t support are crew medical and personal accident.

Our services include a 24/7 emergency response service, where we have in the past arranged tugs for salvage and recovery, towage to a safe haven or towage to a shipyard for repairs or to stand by a yacht where insurers deem that it would be prudent for a damaged yacht to be escorted to safe haven. We have also consulted on towage approval plans and assisted yacht management companies as part of their own emergency response plans.
