If you have ever spent a glorious afternoon on the water on a sailboat, you know what a thrill it is. Sailing represents freedom, harnessing the wind to drive you forward. It is a quiet time on the water and developing the skills to sail well can be addicting. It doesn’t matter if you want to simply go out for a few hours, enjoy an occasional overnight or weekend cruise, join the racing crowd and be in the frenetic chaos at the starting line, or dream of tropical sunsets in paradise far over the horizon. Sailing has great appeal to those romantic souls who discover its pleasures. And sailing can be a lifelong passion.

The average cost of a sailboat for sale will vary all over the board, given the many sizes, complexities, and types of sailboats out there. New or used, they can range from small, open daysailers to large catamarans that have multiple staterooms and accommodations for the entire family. Modern speedy monohulls will provide the adrenaline rush for those athletic enough to push them to their limits, while heavier, slower sailboats provide a comfortable platform to sail safely around the world, or wherever your dreams take you.

A 22-foot sailboat may be close to $30,000 brand new, yet an older model of the same boat built in the late 1970s might be purchased for $5,500 or less. A shiny new 48-foot catamaran will cost you well over $1,000,000, while a similar boat built in 2008 may be purchased for $425,000, and be better equipped. This new-versus-used situation is going to be true for all sailboats, no matter if they are monohull, catamaran, motorsailer, daysailer, or racing machine. Is it best to always buy a brand-new boat? That depends. The key is to understand that there will be additional costs that may not be obvious.

The docks at all major boat shows showcase the diverse range of sailboats to satisfy everyone’s ideas, and it is easy to fall in love with one boat after another. Sailboats are funny like that, so similar, yet so different. How to choose the right one often comes down to what one can afford. That sail away special during the show may be enough to pull out your checkbook, but there is more to it than just the sale price. There is the obvious need to keep it somewhere, insure it, and maintain it.

Low maintenance boats are literally a wash and wear proposition that live just fine during the season on a mooring.

For instance, most new production boats are built to the level of completeness necessary to satisfy most buyers. It is sufficient for how most people will use it. That is smart and intentional. It makes no sense to fully outfit a sailboat to the level where it can safely cross oceans, because the builders already know few owners have that desire and doing so drives up the costs significantly. So, the manufacturers complete the boats to around 80 percent of what would be necessary for a passagemaker ready to conquer the world.

What new boat buyers soon learn is the extent of associated costs that necessarily increase as the boats get bigger, more complex, with more systems for comfort and ease of sail handling…all intended to provide a higher quality living aboard experience.

A partial list of such items may include :

• Diesel engine propulsion system, including transmission, shaft and seal, and propeller • Additional standing and running rigging, such as whisker pole and inner forestay • A sail inventory beyond regular sails, such as spinnakers, Code Zero, and special purpose sails • Some form of renewable anti-fouling protection for hull and propeller • Batteries, which often must be replaced every six years or so • Ground tackle, which may include electric windlass, chain/rope rode and heavier anchor(s) • Navigation electronics and autopilot • Safety gear, such as PFDs, life raft, EPIRB, flares, harnesses • Dinghy and perhaps a gas or electric outboard • Comfort appliances, such as refrigeration/freezer, air conditioning • Generator • Bow thruster • Exterior canvas for bimini and covers for sun and weather protection • Additional fenders, dock lines, shorepower cords

On a new or almost new boat, it is generally agreed that 10 percent of the value of the boat will be needed for recurring annual maintenance costs, for things like varnish, bottom paint, zincs, cleaning supplies, fuel filters, oil, grease, and other consumables. If one can do the work themselves, it will be much cheaper than paying the going yard rates.

On an older boat, the budget for keeping things working will generally be higher, unless the boat is simple and does not have lots of winches, systems, or complexity. The gaff-rigged Tahiti ketch comes to mind, as does the Westsail 32. Once a boat reaches 10+ years, things just start to wear out, hoses get brittle, plumbing cracks, wires corrode, pumps fail, and seacocks deteriorate. While older sailboats have the obvious appeal of a low initial price, a false sense of value can be shattered when it is determined that the engine must be replaced, all the leaking ports need major work, or it’s time for a new mast and rigging. Old roller furling gear goes into the dumpster.

That romantic cutter, all covered in teak decks and gleaming brightwork will cost you thousands of dollars to maintain the varnish. Unless you want to do it yourself, of course, but most find it tedious and time consuming.

Many younger people go the old, fixer-upper route, and they figure they can make it work while learning new skills. But they are still in their prime, don’t mind a little discomfort by roughing it, and their dreams and vision cuts through the cloud of difficulties to get the boat that much closer to begin living the dream. There are scores of YouTube channels that celebrate this lifestyle theme of living the experience.

While there are compelling reasons to buy a new boat, the sweet spot for managing the cost of buying a sailboat, I believe, is to find one that is neither brand new nor very old. Searching for a boat that fits one’s needs and is under 10 years old can result in a purchase that has the best all-around value. The boat’s propulsion, plumbing, steering, and electrical components are still working, the equipment still current and good for the foreseeable future. One does not expect the same service from an autopilot that is 30 years old, assuming it even works.

Look at the popular Beneteau Oceanis series sailboats, for example. Keeping it under 10 years old, one finds a 2015 Oceanis 41 around $178,000, and a 2018 Oceanis 41.1 at $198,000. Not surprising, the age of the boat has as much to do with the asking price as its condition and how well it is equipped. A 1977 Catalina 30 can be purchased for $15,000, while a five-year-newer boat is listed for $25,000. A Catalina 30 built in 1993 is asking $29,000.

Ultimately, the cost of buying a sailboat must be balanced with the value it brings. Newer boats aren’t just fresher and cleaner, they are arguably better boats, as the technology of boat building has made great strides in improving the product. Vacuum infusion is now commonplace and is far better for building a strong hull that is lighter than traditionally hand laid fiberglass, where it was difficult to control the resin to glass ratio.

Diesel engines are now much cleaner, lighter per horsepower, have better fuel economy, and overall, propulsion systems have greatly improved with electronic controls. The same is true for most other components, from appliances to steering systems. And today’s electrical systems are lightyears better than what is found in older boats. LED fixtures, lithium-ion batteries, regeneration gear, and much improved wiring practices add to the marvelous systems of today.

Across the board, hull shapes have changed, and they are more powerful, more easily driven, and the sailing systems that power them are also much improved, while being safer and easier to use. Some builders, such as Tartan Yachts, even promote that they have put the fun factor back into sailing, as their sail handling systems are a joy to use.

Sailboats, like all other vehicles, come with their own unique set of upkeep and maintenance costs.  These days, you can find a decent used sailboat on Craigslist for just a few thousand dollars.  While it might seem appealing at first, remember that you’re not looking at the whole cost of ownership.  Luckily, sailboat upkeep tends to cost less than a similarly sized powerboat. And remember—sailing keeps fuel prices quite low!

Don’t let this article discourage you from owning a sailboat.  Once you calculate the actual cost of ownership, you’ll be prepared to go out and purchase with confidence.  Knowing your sailboat’s upkeep costs ahead of time will save you a huge hassle down the line.  In this article we’ll go over the most common sources of cost, and give you a general idea of what to expect.

We’ll tally up the costs using a well-maintained, older 30-foot fiberglass sailboat as an example, purchased for $7,500.

Registration and Taxes

Registration fees vary wildly from state to state, based on everything from boat type and length to hull material .  In Connecticut, our 30-foot fiberglass sailboat would cost $135.00 per year, whereas a wooden sailboat of a similar age would only cost $33.75 . Registration costs typically increase with length, and some states require bi-annual renewal.

If you’re registering a boat for the first time, you’ll need to pay taxes on it too, usually 4-10% of the purchase price.  In most states, registration fees for a medium-sized sailboat aren’t likely to exceed a couple hundred dollars.  That being said, it’s still essential to find out beforehand.  Be sure to consider your boat’s hull material, length, and displacement when calculating the expense.

For our 30-foot sailboat, we’ll assume the annual registration cost is $135.0. With a 6.25% tax on our $7,500 purchase price rounding out to $469, the total first-time registration cost is $604.

Everything needs insurance these days.  But seriously, it’s vital to insure your boat.  Watercraft can cause severe damage to docks, other boats, and people under the right conditions, so you don’t want to be on the hook when an accident happens.  Not to mention, a stray hurricane or hailstorm can turn your floating dream into a financial nightmare.  Boat insurance premiums vary based on an innumerable host of factors.

Additionally, premiums can vary widely from state to state.  In Florida, boat owners pay an average annual premium of $611 , while boaters in Alabama pay only $282 .  Larger and newer boats generally cost more to insure.  As with auto insurance, it’s essential to shop around to get the most coverage for the least amount of money.  Fortunately, insurance premiums for older, medium-sized sailboats aren’t too frightening.

For our 30-foot sailboat, we’ll assume the annual insurance premium is $400.00.

The most obvious source of upkeep costs for sailboats are slip fees.  Assuming you don’t own a large amount of land, you’re going to need a place to put your boat.  Most homeowner’s associations don’t take kindly to a large trailered sailboat on a lawn, and that’s only possible if your boat fits on a trailer to begin with.

There aren’t many places to safely dock a boat for free.  While you can anchor, you’ll be forced to remain with the boat most of the time.  For liveaboards, that may not be an issue; but you’ll still need a way to get onto land.  Unless you’re an avid saltwater swimmer, you’ll need another boat.  Plus, life in the marina offers a multitude of great benefits!  Access to bars, outdoor social areas, hot tubs, showers, and parking are all common.  The marina community adds a whole host of benefits to the sailing experience.

In much of the United States, slips at marinas are leased seasonally.  Depending on your location, slip fees usually run between $500 to $5,000 every six months.  For boats with an overall length of less than 30 feet, it’s often less expensive.  Generally speaking, the bigger the boat, the higher the fees.   While you can interpret slip fees as a month-to-month expense, keep in mind that some marinas don’t offer monthly payment plans.  Instead many require between 25-50% upfront , so prepare pay up at least a quarter of your seasonal fees.  Some marinas offer cheaper slips in less desirable areas, often without access to amenities like power and water.  If you’re willing to lose the perks, ask around and see if a more economical docking option exists.

For our 30-foot sailboat, we’ll assume the six-month slip fee is $1,250, so our annual docking cost is $2,500.

Routine Maintenance and Repair

A wise man once said,

        “A boat is a hole in the water surrounded by wood, into which one throws money.”

While the old sarcastic adage sounds outlandish, it’s not entirely untrue.  Upkeep and maintenance costs vary widely between boats, based on many factors.  How well the boat was built, and how well it was previously maintained are the biggest contributors to cost. Simply put, the best way to avoid outrageous maintenance costs is to avoid purchasing a dilapidated boat.  The initial cost savings might be appealing, but poorly maintained boats will cost you many times more down the line.

Assuming your boat isn’t in dire need of a massive overhaul, your yearly maintenance expenses should remain stable.  The most common sources of maintenance expenses are hull and engine repair.  If your boat uses an inboard motor, you can expect to pay more for upkeep.  Marine engines are typically made of iron and subjected to corrosive conditions, so clogged and rusted cooling systems are often cause for concern.  Outboard motors are easier to maintain because they can be stored in dry conditions when not in use.  However, they don’t last as long as inboard units.  While you can always avoid inboard maintenance by using an outboard, it’s never a good idea to let a dead engine sit in your boat.

Contrary to popular belief, sails don’t actually need to be replaced that often.  A new set of sails can cost thousands of dollars, so it’s best to store it properly when not in use.  Sail covers cost around $200 and can save thousands down the line, so add that to your expense sheet.  For an average-sized sailboat, expect to pay around $1,000-2,500 for a new set of sails.

New rigging can cost a fortune if neglected, but it’s not that difficult to maintain.  Re-rigging a sailboat costs about $100 per foot, so expenses can add up quickly.  Pulleys, winches, and deck components can fail, which adds several hundred dollars to the price tag.  Luckily, these failures can be prevented for years with proper care upfront.

Overall, you can expect to pay between $2,000-5,000 per year to maintain a cruising sailboat .  Expenses will increase exponentially when a boat is neglected, so regular care will pay off big time.  The specific cost varies based on the age, condition, and build quality of your sailboat.  If you can do the work yourself, you can save lots of money.  DIY boat repairs (if done properly) last just as long as professional work.  If you do it yourself, you’ll only need to pay for parts and hauling out.  One more thing—it costs money to have your boat lifted in or out of the water.  In many places, it only costs about $20 to haul-out an average sized sailboat.

If you live in a colder climate, you should consider hauling-out and storing your boat for the winter.  Fiberglass boat hulls can be susceptible to cold weather, and overexposure can cause cracks in the hull.  Winter storage costs average out around $200 monthly, but can be lower than $20 or higher than $500 .  Keep in mind that boats made of hardwood (like oak) generally should not be stored on land except for maintenance.  Traditional wooden boats are caulked with cotton, relying on the swelling of the planks to seal itself up.  When the boat dries out, the planks shrink and often necessitate re-caulking.

For our 30-foot sailboat, we’ll assume the yearly cost of maintenance is $2,000, plus a dry storage fee of $400 for the winter.

Total Sailboat Upkeep Cost

Throughout this article, we’ve used a reasonably maintained 30-foot fiberglass sailboat as an example.  Here we’ll tally up the cost to give you an idea of what to expect.  Your individual boat could cost more or less than our example, but the same rules still apply.

·          Slip Fees: $2,500

·          Routine Maintenance: $2,000

·          Winter Storage: $400

·          TOTAL UPKEEP COST: $5,519

·          UPKEEP PLUS PURCHASE PRICE: $13,419

As you can see, the total purchase price of the boat (including first-year upkeep cost) is almost twice the listed price of the boat.  With these factors in mind, you can better prepare for the expenses you’ll face as a boat owner.  As you work out the kinks in your boat and find the best deals, your expenses will gradually decrease with time.  Now that you’re aware of the hidden costs, you can rest easy and enjoy a sailing experience within your means.

How Much Does a Sailboat Cost?

Unlike a boat a sailboat is propelled by the wind in its sails rather than a motor; however, many sailboats have motors in case of no winds or an emergency.  Most sailboats vary in size, and some of the most common sized sailboats are 17, 18, 25, 26 and 27 feet long.

How much does a sailboat cost?

On average, a smaller sailboat can cost as little as $1,500, while a larger sailboat with all the bells and whistles can easily surpass the $400,000 price tag; however, most used purchases should be within the $1,000 to $11,000 range.  Like purchasing a big-ticket item, such as a car or home, it’s going to be hard to give a price since so many variables are involved.   The costs will depend on the brand, its condition, the length, the inclusions and the seller.    For brand new sailboats, plan on adding 30 to 50% on top of the price listed above.  ChicagoNow.com says about two percent of all new boats being sold are sailboats  and 90 percent of the boats sold will be less than 26 feet in length.

For example, a smaller 14-foot inflatable sailboat can retail for $2,300 to $2,500, while a 17-foot sailboat can cost $3,000 to $23,000 used.  An 18-foot sailboat can cost anywhere from $5,000 to as much as $47,000 used.

Larger sailboats, 26 feet long or larger, can cost anywhere from $7,500 to as much as $85,000.

Sailboats longer than 36 feet can cost anywhere from $27,000 to as much as $215,000 or more.

SailMentor.com says the most common type of sailboat for sale in Vancouver, Canada is the  Catalina 27.   This particular model, if found in good condition, can retail for about $10,000 used .

We took a look at random Craigslist ads across the country and were able to come up with the “average” cost of used boats, noted in our table below:

What are the extra costs?

A trailer is going to be required to transport the sailboat from one point to another, and the truck or car that you are going to use to transport it must also have a tow package in order to tow it.  However, this is optional as a sailboat can be stored at a marina year around if the weather permits.  Annual storage, depending on the marina, can be close to $2,000 per year.

Boat registration will be required according to local state and country laws.

Boater’s insurance can cost one to two percent of the boat’s value per year.

Marina moorage or docking dues will be required in order to store your sailboat overnight.  Most city ordinances will not allow you to store your boat in your yard due to the size.   Moorage fees will be charged by the foot and length of your boat, costing about $5 to $15 per foot.

Ongoing maintenance down the road, just like a car, will need to be budgeted for. This can include gasoline if using the motor and routine maintenance.  For example, every two to three years, a new coat of bottom paint will have to be applied.  Captain Gino says you should be prepared to spend about 10 percent of your boat’s value on maintenance every year.

A navigation system is highly recommended and won’t come with the initial purchase most of the time.  A good sailboat navigation system can cost $200 to $1,000+

How can I save money?

Purchasing a used sailboat is the way to go.  Not only are you going to get a great deal, saving up to 60% or more, you’re going to find that if you purchase a newer boat, it’s going to lose its value almost instantly when pulled off the lot.  Check sites such as Craigslist ,  eBay  or specialized classified websites, such as Sailboatlistings.com or YachtWorld, that focus on sailboats for used sailboat deals.

If you know of someone else who may want to purchase a sailboat, consider going in on it used to bring down the costs.

If you don’t want to invest in a sailboat but would like to take one out on the water from time to time, consider joining a local sailing club or co-op.  These clubs offer many sailing options and allow you take it out by reservation.

25 foot 1969 sailboat, 1500 for boat, motr & full set of used but good sails, $1000 for moving, electronics, etc. Older boats are a brilliant move, especially when they have a good maintenance history, and you have skill to fix little things (which is required with all boats.)

Of course we increase maintenance costs due to chartering based on the number of extra days on the water. Every boater or boat enthusiast knows that boats come in different sizes and forms. You have boats the size of a small speed boat to some as big as a 60-foot catamaran. And obviously, they would also have different price tags on them and different upkeep and maintenance costs. I mean, you don’t expect the price for a small speed boat and a 60-foot cat to be remotely equal now, would you? Moving to the topic at hand, how much will it cost to own a 40-foot catamaran boat? This is the question that should be on the mind of anyone planning to purchase one. When looking at the cost of owning one, you will have to consider a lot of factors, such as the cost of buying said boat, the cost of maintaining the boat, and living expenses and utilities on the boat.

Buying the Boat 

You should know exactly how much the boat you want to go for costs. There are different types and brands of 40-foot Catamaran Sailboats in the world from different designers, and all of them go for different prices. Therefore, you should research the boats and look for one that fits snugly into your budget. Here is a list of some decent 40-footer vessels and the price they will go for:

  • The Bali 4.0: The Bali 4.0 is a modern marvel. She’s a 40-foot cat that combines the most attractive new characteristics of the modern cat, making it desirable. The 2016 model goes for about $391,247.
  • The Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40: She is a lovely vessel with a very stylish interior design. She’s lightweight but is smaller in volume than her other models. The Lucia 40 comes in different versions like the Lucia 40 Equator with 4 cabins/4 bathrooms or 4 cabins/2 bathrooms and the Lucia 40 Maestro that has 3 cabins/3 bathrooms or 3 cabins/2 bathrooms. She is priced at around $390,043.
  • The Lagoon 400S2: She has decent performance on water with a big interior volume and luxurious accommodation that is spacious enough for a couple to enjoy their sale. The 2016 model goes for about $429,000, while the 2015 model goes for about $335,900.                                                                                                  
  • Leopard 40: She is heavier than other catamaran models, but it doesn’t make her any less classy. The bridge deck is lower than those seen on other cats, which allows for more buoyancy. The 2008 version cost about $250,000 while the 2006 version costs about $205,000.  

Please note that the prices listed for all the boats above are estimates, and they vary from dealer to dealer. Also, note that the age of the boat will have a considerable effect on the price.

Costs After Buying Your Boat

  • Tax: Now, this is something you can’t escape. The amount you have to pay in tax is heavily dependent on the state you reside in. But irrespective of where you stay, there are 3 basic tax fees you have to pay: sales tax, use tax, and personal property tax.
  • Insurance: You have to insure your boat just in case. A lot of factors affect insurance, like the age of the boat, length, value, and speed of the boat. For a catamaran sailboat, you need to get boat insurance.
  • Fuel and diesel: The amount of fuel a vessel will need depends on the design and size. For example, a 50-gallon (190 litters) tank of fuel can propel a 3-foot sailboat for 300 miles (482.8 km) but will barely last a 40-foot cat going at high speeds for 33 miles (53.11 km). However, this cost depends highly on you based on how much you use the wind and your sails as a means of propulsion. 
  • Mooring: Where you decide to dock your boat has a significant impact on your finances. Mooring is a time-based charge that is applied to all vessels for staying in a marina. The cost of mooring depends on a lot of factors, like where you decide to dock, the type of vessel you want to dock, and how long you want the boat to stay on the marina. For docking a 40-foot cat, you could spend $12,042 yearly in a popular marina with long waiting lists. The price drops for marinas with little or no waiting lists. Also, the bigger the boat, the more expensive the mooring fee will be. A lot of marinas offer additional services on top of the basic package. Of course, this will also incur additional costs. Another aspect of owning a cat that costs money is the maintenance of the boat. When the cat sets sail, it’s exposed to the harsh marine environment, which is detrimental in the long run to the boat. Hence, it is necessary for regular checks, repairs, and replacements to be done to the boat.

Maintenance Costs to Consider

  • Washing the vessel: washing the boat regularly is very important. Keep the boat neat and attractive.
  • Cleaning the rails.
  • Inspecting and washing sails of the boat, including fixing any tear or damage to the sail.
  • Ventilation of the interior parts of the yacht.
  • Maintenance of the boat plumbing system.
  • Clearing the sewage tank.
  • Regularly scrubbing up the barnacles that are stuck on the bottom of the hull. Do not forget to check for cracks and chips. Also, treat the bottom with anti-fouling coating polishing for the hull. You could hire professional divers to help with cleaning the bottom.
  • Polishing the hull: You need to remember to polish or even repaint the hulls of the boat when the paint starts washing off or wears out. Before polishing, make sure to inspect the hull for any damage. 
  • Do not forget to take care of the engine of the boat; always do regular checks on the oil level and clean the filter.
  • Take care of the boat battery and replace it when the battery is out of commission.
  • For the interior parts of the boat, the vinyl furniture in the boat has to be cleaned several times in a season. Also, remember to use the correct cleaners, or else you could cause more damage and incur more costs. To reupholster a piece of vinyl furniture, for example, would cost around $500 to $3,500.

You will also have to put enough money into the safety of the crew or the family aboard. You have to purchase life jackets, paddle horns and signal flares, marine binoculars, and waterproof materials in case of an emergency.

In addition, you will have to pay for basic utilities like electricity, cable, garbage disposal, and clearing out the sewage. In some cases, you might even have to pay for storage. However, you can’t really put a specific price for the above list because there are too many variables in place.

However, the most accurate answer would be that  the cost of owning and maintaining a 40-Foot Catamaran Sailboat is around 10% of its purchase price. Meaning that if you buy a $300,000 catamaran, it will run you around $30,000 to own.

California Yacht Club is located at: 4469 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 .

  • If driving, please park in the CYC visitor’s lot adjacent to Admiralty Way and accessed from the driveway which is between Café del Rey and the Warehouse Restaurant.
  • Once parked, proceed by foot and enter the member’s parking lot by passing by the main entry gate.
  • After passing the main entry gate, continue walking, bearing hard left along the chain link fence at the north end of the large parking lot until it ends at a dark green shade cloth covered rowing shed.
  • We meet, at the rowing sheds which are opposite the tall bamboo plants separating the Warehouse Restaurant and CYC.

Participants should bring: athletic shoes (running shoes), socks, shorts, shirts, sunscreen, water, a change of clothes,

towel and personal items (hats, sunglasses, orthotics, inhalers, etc).

To keep all the gear organized, a small duffel bag or back pack is recommended.

Clothes should fit reasonably tightly so while rowing, hands won’t get caught in shirts and shorts won’t get caught in the sliding seats.

Dressing in layers and using wicking type fabrics is recommended.

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

The J/70 is 22.75 feet with an 11 foot long cockpit and deck-stepped carbon mast for easy rigging and stepping.

The crew shall consist of 3 or more persons. The number of crew shall not be changed during an event.

The J/70 Class has been created as a strict one-design Class where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment.

Well, chances are it will not be like Day 1 of the Pre-Worlds. Maybe more like Day 2. But then again, this is MdR—anything can happen.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and boated its' first competitive rowing team back in the 1930's. In 1977, after a long hiatus, Stan Mullin, Ken Jacobs and Charles Hathaway reactivated rowing at the Club. CYC rowers now number about 60, and represent all abilities, ages and motivations.
