At delivery, owner and captain are presented with a list of contacts at the appropriate sales center, in the service department and at the shipyard, for 24 hour-a-day access and immediate response to any need.

You will find a consistent relationship with the people you have come to identify and call upon during the entire length of your new construction process and delivery. Westport is proud of our decades-long company associates. At Westport, we take service seriously. If, for example, you experience a problem, we don’t expect you to find and contact the manufacturer in order to chase down the warranty claim or repair/replacement.

Yacht service: getting your sailing yacht ready for the season

A guide to luxury yacht servicing with oyster yachts

Maintenance is a vital part of yacht ownership, but here at oyster, we recognise that time spent on pre-season checks can make all the difference between a frustrating start to the season, and a perfect start to the season..

With that in mind, we’ve put together our guide to servicing and getting your Oyster ready for the season ahead. From the water maker to the sail checks, to the winches and the main engine service, this is our owner’s handbook. Following our advice will allow you to stay on top of the annual maintenance and ensure you are ready to enjoy a great season of sailing.

Trust your yacht maintenance log

At Oyster, every owner receives a maintenance manual and a logbook when they take ownership of their yacht, which allows you to easily track your yacht’s maintenance history. Your Oyster logbook contains a weekly, monthly, bi-annual, annual, five-year and ten-year servicing checklist, which you can use to ensure you’re properly caring for your yacht.

Oyster owners have the added benefit that we keep all the original plans and build logs on file, so buyers can refer to the original intentions when your yacht was specified and built. Keeping your logbook updated will also help increase the residual value of your yacht, as new buyers prioritise well-maintained boats.

How long does a yacht service take?

When carried out by Oyster, an annual yacht service takes two weeks with the yacht out of the water. This allows for the application of new antifouling paint and servicing of the rudder, propeller, seacocks and thrusters. It is also a good time to polish the hull and superstructure.

Each Oyster yacht service is unique to the boat, and it depends on its current condition and your plans for the season ahead. Our  service team  will create an honest list of requirements, scoping everything from canvas work to winches, meaning you can set sail for the season, confident in the knowledge you are ready to take on anything.

What to expect from your pre-season check and annual yacht haul-out

Annual pre-season checks and preparations for an Oyster may include:

• Sails valeted
• A visual check of your rigging or official survey of your yacht rig, if in commercial use
• Engines and generators serviced
• All systems checked over – air-conditioning, refrigeration, LPG, electrics, and electronics
• Annual safety equipment checks

And once she’s lifted out of the water for her annual haul-out:

• Antifouling, repainting, polishing
• Service of propeller, shaft, and cutlass bearings
• Rudder and keel checks
• Replacement of anodes
• Service of seacocks and thrusters

Where can my sailing yacht be serviced?

Our Oyster Service Centres are in the most popular sailing destinations. In the Mediterranean, our base in  Palma de Mallorca  offers a range of yacht services, repairs and maintenance work. For those in the US,  Oyster Yachts Newport  is your go-to yard for anything from a general health check to an emergency repair and everything in between. In the UK we have  Oyster Service Centres  in Southampton and Ipswich, both of which offer a broad range of services from refits through to annual maintenance and storage.

Everything on your logbook checklist can be carried out by our dedicated teams around the world, and where necessary, we can come directly to you to carry out the required yacht maintenance work.

• MTU Diesel Engines  have an extraordinary history extending as far back as 1900. MTU is now a subsidiary of Rolls Royce Power Systems. The MTU Series 4000 Diesel has accumulated over 180,000,000 hours of operation.  Their engines are developed for a world of large commercial and passenger ships.
• Caterpillar Marine Power Systems . Caterpillar Marine has the most comprehensive range of engine types in the world. CAT engines fall into several divisions including Cruisers, Fishing and Pleasure Craft. Worldwide dealer support is a powerful asset when considering engine types.
• MAN Yacht Engines . The story of MAN Engines can be charted back to 1758 when St. Antony Ironworks began operation in Oberhausen Germany. Owners of a MAN Yacht Engine must sign off on approval of their merchandise, and that is just the introduction of their superb protection.
• Cummins Marine . Worldwide support is a necessary factor when choosing your power plant. Cummins Marine is another recognizable brand that has been building marine engines since 1919. The Cummins Service Network is one of the widest in the world and extremely robust.
• Volvo Penta Marine Leisure .  Volvo Penta has carved out a vast swath of the marine propulsion industry.  While other engine builders cater to the superyacht niche, Volvo Penta delivers marine systems for yachts in the 60 to 120-foot range. About Alex of Alacrity Yacht Management

I am fortunate to have worked in the marine industry for 30 years and have an extensive background in all aspects of maritime life.  My career started at the age of 14 as a Dock boy at Goat Island Marina in Newport, RI, and continued there throughout college, as an Assistant Dock Master.  Responsibilities included ongoing maintenance of the 300 boat slips and organizing contracts for seasonal and transient customers.  After receiving my 100 Ton Master U.S. Coast Guard License, I ventured out to work on private yachts throughout the East Coast and Caribbean.  During this time, I gained an appreciation for the importance of well-maintained yachts and familiarized myself with the waterways of the East Coast.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Local startup launches AI productivity software aimed at blue-collar service companies

A Richmond-based tech company is bringing an AI tool to blue-collar workers.

Rising Tide recently unveiled a subscription-based software designed to improve the efficiency and knowledge retention of employees at service companies such as delivery firms, exterminators and home repair outfits.

In the wake of the product launch, the company also in recent weeks secured $650,000 in investor funding to grow its team.

Rising Tide CEO and cofounder Jeff Corbett said the new product is intended to combat an issue faced by many services companies: their workers – repairmen, delivery drivers and similar roles – generally rely on their own personal experiences to get their work done, which means a seasoned worker’s knowledge usually gets lost as employees come and go.

“Your  HVAC repairs, your refrigerator installations from Home Depot, your lawn care. All these people have vans that are moving around and doing things, but once they get to the door, they’re basically using whatever is in somebody’s head. The churn of the industry, of people coming and going, is reducing the amount of success companies can guarantee,” Corbett said.

Rising Tide and its software works with such businesses to build online toolkits that feature employee-created videos and audio files. Those resources are accessible via mobile app and used by workers in the field to get educated on everything from tips on where to find utilities at a residential property to a rundown of a homeowner’s quirks. Corbett likened the experience to looking up videos on YouTube to learn how to do something.

“George, a 70-year-old guy who has been doing this since 1965 or something, is going to talk to you just like he’s in the truck with you. He’ll say, ‘Hey, Mrs. Smith likes it when you back into the driveway. This oil tank is on the right side of the house under the magnolia tree,’” Corbett said.

Corbett said the new system utilizes generative artificial intelligence.

“The customers we have right now have an issue with knowledge management, that issue is sharing what the best of their employees know with the employees who are newer,”  he said. “That’s where AI comes in. Because you can take what’s in Sally’s head, push it out to other employees, replicate that knowledge and then walk them through how to do it.”

Corbett said a key element of the platform is employee buy-in, because they are the ones who need to create the how-to resources that will be used by their colleagues.

“They’re bringing the content expertise to us. We’re focusing on just replicating the technology and then letting them give us the expertise” he said. “All we have to do is facilitate the sharing of the knowledge and AI learns as it goes.”

Rising Tide’s program also uses blockchain, a technology usually associated with cryptocurrency, so a client can build a permanent and accessible database of records such as warranties, billing and other information that employees can reference in a single place.

Rafe Wilkinson, Rising Tide’s vice president of strategic revenue, said similar productivity technologies are usually aimed at office workers, whereas Rising Tide’s program is seeking what they feel like is an untapped market of blue-collar fields.

“Everybody is taking AI from a B2C, white-collar approach where it’s chatbots helping people write emails and that sort of thing. We’re really turning to the everyday, blue-collar worker. We’re automating their day, making it easier for them to get where they’re going and know what they need to do on a day-to-day basis,” Wilkinson said.

As of early March, Rising Tide had 15 to 20 businesses subscribed to its service, Wilkinson said.

The company launched its software service, which is called The Rising Tide, in January. The launch preceded the completion of a $650,000 investor round that closed in late February, and is being utilized to grow the size of the Rising Tide team.

The company currently has six employees and plans to have a total headcount of 10 by June. Those new hires will primarily be software engineers and developers in addition to other roles.

To date Rising Tide has secured about $790,000 in funding. The February raise followed a friends-and-family round in summer 2023 that raised $140,000, Wilkinson said.

Looking forward, Rising Tide is planning to raise a future $2.5 million capital round.

Rising Tide was established in 2022, and the company’s co-founders are Corbett, Nels Yehnert, Craig Huber and Zachary Robinson. The company is based in Startup Virginia, a business incubator in Capital One’s Michael Wassmer Innovation Center in Shockoe Bottom.

Corbett, who has a background in logistics, said the startup originally focused on last-mile delivery but expanded its efforts after service companies expressed interest in what Rising Tide was doing.

“What we found out very quickly was that the issues we were solving were a lot more diverse than we expected,” he said.

U.S. Park Service Says to Leave Your Cash at Home, but Some Object

Complaints have been mounting on social media, and now a group has filed a lawsuit, as the service has continued rolling out policies against accepting cash to enter federal parks.

At dozens of national parks and historic sites around the United States, getting away from it all to revel in the country’s wide open spaces has taken on a whole new meaning.

Leave your dollars and coins behind, too.

The National Park Service is continuing to convert dozens of its sites across the country to cashless payments only, drawing complaints and, now, a lawsuit.

Starting in June last year, visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado were told that they could not use cash to enter the park or use its campgrounds. The negative reactions were swift, with visitors raising privacy concerns and expressing confusion about why the American dollar would not be welcome in the U.S. parks system. Some noted that not everyone has credit or debit cards.

“The National Parks belong to the citizens,” wrote one person, among dozens who complained about the decision on the site’s Facebook page . “If we want to use legal tender then we should.”

“So now R.M.N.P. is becoming like Walmart self-checkout,” another wrote under the park’s announcement, which later stopped accepting comments and directed people to official channels.

The park service has been rolling out the policy for several years . In 2019, the service announced that it would only accept credit cards, debit cards and special park passes at Pipe Spring National Monument in Arizona. Similar changes came to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana, then Death Valley National Park in California, and this month, Hovenweep National Monument in Colorado and Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah, will go cashless. (At many sites, annual passes can still be purchased with cash.)

In January, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area near Las Vegas also moved to a cashless system, and reactions on the park’s forum were so testy that moderators issued reminders to keep it family-friendly.

“I really don’t see this as an improvement in customer service,” wrote a man , who said he was a former firefighter. “No, everyone doesn’t have plastic. And if they do, maybe they don’t want to be traced everywhere they go. Maybe they don’t want to leave a paper trail. Maybe their card is maxed out. Maybe they don’t want their significant other to know where they are.”

And he asked, “since when is legal currency not suitable for use for payments?”

The park service said it wanted to reduce risk and the time employees spend managing cash, as well as increase revenue and accountability. At the Death Valley and Nevada parks, for example, rangers collected $22,000 in cash, which ended up costing over $40,000 in handling costs when factoring in the use of an armored car and time spent counting money and processing paperwork.

Of the more than 400 national parks, 108 charge an entrance fee, and most of the parks that have converted to cashless collection have had an “overwhelmingly positive experience,” the park service says in a statement on its website.

But now the complaints are the subject of a lawsuit filed on March 6 in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, asserting that the service’s policies violate federal law defining cash as “legal tender” and the visitors’ “lawful right to pay in cash” at national sites, including those without bank accounts or cards or those who simply prefer to pay cash.

In addition to the park service, its director, Charles F. Sams, III, and the Department of the Interior were named as defendants. A spokeswoman for the parks service, Cynthia Hernandez, said on Thursday that it does not comment on pending litigation.

“N.P.S. cashless is contrary to law since American money is not accepted as legal tender to visit the nation’s treasures,” the filing said.

The suit is seeking a declaratory judgment.

One of the three plaintiffs, Toby Stover, a New York woman, drove to Hyde Park, N.Y., in January to visit the historic home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, according to the lawsuit. At the gate, a man in a National Park Service uniform asked if she was there for the 3:30 p.m. tour. She said yes, but was not allowed to enter after trying to pay $10 in cash, the filing said.

Esther van der Werf, who lives in California, is also identified as a plaintiff. In January and February, while planning trips to Saguaro National Park, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Tonto National Monument, all in Arizona, Ms. van der Werf was told she could not pay in cash, the lawsuit said. And a Georgia woman who is also a plaintiff, Elizabeth Dasburg, was told that she could not use cash to enter Fort Pulaski National Monument in Georgia, the suit said.

The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Ray L. Flores, II, said in an emailed reply to questions that the legal action is being financially backed by the Children’s Health Defense, a nonprofit founded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that has pursued legal action against pandemic mandates and been criticized for spreading disinformation about Covid-19 vaccines.

Mr. Flores said in the email that cashless policies were “a key component — if not the linchpin — of the surveillance state.” He said that he had advised the plaintiffs not to respond to interview requests.

The group’s general counsel, Kim Mack Rosenberg, said the organization was supporting the action “to push back against the move toward a cashless society and central bank digital currency .”

According to the Federal Reserve, there is no federal statute that says a private business, person, or organization must accept currency or coins.

Partial boat ramp opening at blue mesa reservoir in curecanti nra.

Gunnison, Colo. – Blue Mesa Reservoir has remained about 40% ice-free this winter, and many anglers have been launching boats from shore to access the open waters. To prevent aquatic invasive species from entering the reservoir, however, boats launched with electric and/or gas-powered engines are required to be inspected prior to launching. Since the reservoir is typically frozen over this time of year, inspection services are generally not available. Now that the Lake Fork boat launch is free of ice, the National Park Service is providing limited winter hours and services for boat inspections beginning on Monday, March 25. Full decontamination services will be available starting on Saturday, March 30. Inspection services will begin at noon on Monday. Entrance and exit inspections are the only services available. The station will close at 4:30 pm. Thereafter, operational hours will be 7:00 am to 4:30 pm daily. Boats that have been inspected and are clean, drained, and dry will be allowed to enter the water. Starting on Saturday, water systems will be operational, allowing for decontamination services for all vessels entering the reservoir. Local Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) offices can assist with finding alternative decontamination stations. The Loma decontamination station west of Grand Junction, Colorado opened on March 14 with services available Thursday through Monday. Curecanti National Recreation Area manages recreation along the Gunnison River for Crystal, Morrow Point, and Blue Mesa reservoirs. These reservoirs are part of the greater Colorado River basin, and their hydrology is managed by the Bureau of Reclamation. Motorized and trailered watercraft launched onto Blue Mesa Reservoir must be inspected for aquatic invasive species prior to launching. Boat inspections help ensure that Blue Mesa will remain contaminant free and be available for this and future generations to enjoy. One person was killed in an early-morning apartment fire in Birmingham.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Mitzi Robinson Pope. She was 67.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched shortly after 1 a.m. Monday to Beacon Crest Lane off Valley Avenue.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire in one apartment unit, said Battalion Chief Clay Hendon.

They were able to rescue one person, who was treated on the scene and released. However, Pope did not survive, Hendon said.

She was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:33 a.m.

Hendon said the blaze was contained to the apartment unit’s bedroom. No other apartments were damaged, and no other injuries were reported.

Authorities have not yet said how the fire started.
