Bavaria Vision 46 review: from the archive

After a mixed reaction to their Cruiser range, Bavaria turned to superyacht specialists to vamp up the new Bavaria Vision 46. Toby Hodges finds out if a star has been born

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

Bringing in a big name to put their design stamp on a new range is an established way for a production builder to boost marketing potential – much like a Hollywood star being drafted into a movie to up box office appeal. But would the new Bavaria Vision 46 benefit from some start quality?

For the revamp of their Cruiser line, Bavaria contracted Farr Yacht Design for the naval architecture and BMW designworks USA for the styling. However, just as a Michael Fassbender or Naomi Watts on a billboard will not necessarily ensure a film’s success, the result was no crowd pleaser.

They produced a stiffer, more balanced and rewarding yacht than Bavaria cruisers of old, but the overall look was not pretty – the ports looked as if they were borrowed from an armoured van.

Faced with strong competition from Bénéteau’s Sense range, Elan’s Impression and Jeanneau’s Sun Odyssey, which were offering clients light, volume and comfort, Bavaria were forced to rethink for the new Vision line.

CEO Dr Jens Ludmann was brought in two years ago from the automotive industry and the Bavaria Vision 46 is the first launch under his watch.

His decision to commission superyacht specialists Design Unlimited for the deck and interior styling proved a shrewd one and, with Farr proving reliable with the hull design, the Bavaria Vision 46 made quite a splash last January.

The teardrop coachroof windows give her a modern look and the sheer level of fresh thinking that has helped make this Vision so light, comfortable and easy to spend time on is immediately obvious once you step aboard.

In fact, the quality throughout this boat shines. It’s the first time Bavaria have used a split mould, and the build has obviously been meticulous.

Then there’s the glitz of push-button gadgets to help promote the ease of sailing short-handed.

There have already been four sales of the Bavaria Vision 46 in the UK and we went to test the first with Clipper Marine.

Director Richard Hewett sees the Cruiser line more for those staying in the UK, while Vision clients head further afield. The test boat was going to a Scottish client who plans to cruise her in the Mediterranean.

Sailing the Bavaria Vision 46

Although styled by some of the best design brains in the business, the Bavaria Vision 46 is still a slab-sided lump to confront on the pontoon. But needs must; volume has to be conjured from somewhere.

The designers have clearly put a premium on cockpit comfort. Bavaria had an exclusivity deal with Lewmar to stock their new self-tacking Revo winches, which allow you to tack the boat at the push of a button.

Mounting the main and primary winches close to the twin wheels leaves the cockpit benches clear of lines, with one coachroof winch for halyards.

In perfect South Coast conditions – Force 4-5 and warm sun – we found the boat comfortable to sail.

Bavaria-Vision-46-review-on-deck-credit-Paul-Wyeth

  • Although the side decks are narrow aft, the high coachroof and integrated rail makes it safe to go forward when heeled.

A single-point backstay leaves those beamy aft quarters unimpeded and, with cushioned backrests – which should surely double as lifebuoys – this area proved very comfortable for the helmsman.

Although from behind the wheel this seems a big boat, the Bavaria Vision 46 always felt manageable.

Beside the wheel an area has been sculpted out to allow the helmsman to straddle the wheel, rest a foot on the pedestal and reach the primaries.

Foot chocks on the sole are well-positioned for helmsman and crew, and it’s easy to move between wheels. Visibility forward (with the sprayhood down) is good.

In 15-18 knots boat speed was adequate – and this was backed up by the polars – thanks to a long waterline that’s just a foot shorter than LOA, although it was hard to ascertain precisely with a roaring spring ebb and no working paddlewheel log.

Push-button tacking

Winches that tack the sheets across automatically at the push of a button are a strange new phenomenon to get your head around: hold a button down and the active winch begins to backwind. Then after a pause to allow the bow to swing, the other winch winds in automatically.

The system certainly worked, but Bavaria’s control panel needs rethinking as it is not intuitive. I have since sailed a Hallberg-Rassy with a similar system which had a much clearer control panel.

Bavaria’s Trim Control system can be linked into a Garmin plotter and autopilot, allowing the helmsman to press ‘tack’ and the whole thing will happen automatically. It’s still a lot to keep an eye on if you are sailing single-handed.

It was certainly necessary to monitor the active winch to make sure it was releasing correctly as the backwinding winch sometimes didn’t release, which could cause a pickle in a tack.

You can also control the mainsheet in and out from the panel if you have the sheet rigged to the coachroof winch.

The test boat had the mainsheet split-sheeted and led aft, which I preferred, as we could take up the windward winch to coax the boom over and invoke some twist in the sail.

Once I got the hang of it, auto-tacking was very easy, though the Bavaria Vision 46 is set up well for short-handed sailing anyway.

Despite 24 knots over the deck and full sail, the cable-linked helms didn’t loaded up too much, and maintained admirable control when heeled.

The 105 per cent jib is a manageable size, even without electronic aid, and with chainplates outboard and sheets led to a track on the coachroof, the Bavaria Vision 46 points well, tacking in just over 80°.

Smart solutions

As you descend the offset companionway, the Bavaria Vision 46 feels stable, with solid grabrails leading down into a large inviting living area.

Thanks to the huge coachroof and hull windows, as well as overhead hatches and 7ft headroom, there is abundant natural light and a pleasant feeling of space.

The accommodation is offered in two or three-cabin formats – the latter has a second heads forward – but the standard layout with a twin aft cabin that converts to a double makes a practical option.

This provides a useful work/locker space accessed through the heads. The offset companion creates room for a central island.

Rather than simply creating extra galley space, it provides something to lean against when working in the galley, making it a practical place at sea.

All sole panels have lifting latches – a big plus to make bilge checking and stowage accessible – and the plumbing and hot water tank are neatly contained beside the galley.

However, it’s a pity all the ply edges and end-grain is left untreated. Bavaria have also chosen an impractical white material for some vertical panels, which was already getting grubby.

But nitpicking aside, there’s so much smart thinking throughout, including superb stowage solutions and dual-role tables and chairs that swivel and lift, combined with a good level of finish, that this makes for a very impressive, game-changing interior.

On deck details

  • Vast stowage in the cockpit quarter lockers, aft lazarette and (in this format) the workshop.
  • The cockpit table is a piece of engineering, lowering telescopically on support legs that meet lugs on the sole. The tabletop swivels to form a sunbed.
  • The central aft bench lifts on struts for access to the drop-down swim platform, and includes a bracket to hold the shower head, providing a proper shower on the aft platform. Nice.
  • This is the first Bavaria with an underdeck furler (Selden Furlex), a retractable bow thruster and an electric windlass in the sizeable chain locker.
  • When raised, the sprayhood is, unfortunately, at perfect height to smack foreheads (1.7m).

Below deck on the Bavaria Vision 46

A light and comfortable area, but there is no navstation.

Instead the central part of the portside sofa can be raised and locked in place, the cushion removed to convert it to a coffee table cum makeshift chart table with lifting lid.

Bavaria-Vision-46-review-saloon-credit-Paul-Wyeth

The saloon is a light and comfortable area, but doesn’t have a navstsaion.

It’s a clever idea, as long as you don’t mind reducing your navigation area to such a paltry minimum.

The saloon table is a clever jigsaw puzzle, which swivels and lowers, using sole boards raised vertically each end to act as supports. There’s practical, accessible stowage below soles and berth.

A good area to work in at sea. Above and abaft the twin sinks in the central island is an alcove for optional coffee machine or beer tap (it is German!), although I reckon this space would prove ideal as a draining rack.

Bavaria-Vision-46-review-below-deck-credit-Paul-Wyeth

Left: the central part of the portside sofa can be raised and locked in place and convert to a makeshift chart table. Right: there’s plenty of work surfaces in the galley.

Good stowage and a bin under the sinks.

There’s plenty of worksurface and the stowage space is first class: deep drawers, raised lockers, deep bilge for tins/bottles, pan stowage beneath the stove, plus a huge fridge.

Forward cabin

You step down into the forward cabin, so the 7ft headroom continues forward as far as the berth.

In this layout (no en-suite) this master cabin has a lavish amount of space and a vanity table with stool that is larger than the ‘chart table’.

Bavaria-Vision-46-review-aft cabin-credit-Paul-Wyeth

This master cabin has a lavish amount of space.

There’s good stowage in two huge wardrobes and shelved cupboards to each side, and shoe slots in the bilge.

Alcoves in the forward bulkhead for books and cupholders are a neat touch.

A clever, versatile cabin, with twin berths that join to form a large double.

Good stowage and light, but headroom is constricted above the starboard berth.

Ventilation boards beneath berths lock into place.

The Bavaria Vision 46 is a highly innovative design, with a strict attention to detail, a premium regard for comfort and impressive build quality and styling throughout.

As such, the Vision 46 is a distinct step up in both quality and style, which was certainly needed to keep Bavaria up to speed with their French rivals.

Farr showed their influence in the Cruiser line and the Vision too demonstrates admirable seakeeping and is sturdier and quieter below at sea than any Bavaria I’ve sailed.

The German company have a good team in place now which, as well as Farr and Design Unlimited, includes Peter Meyer and Daniel Kohl to oversee the roll-out of the new lines.

With a Cruiser 33 and a 56 to come using the same fresh thinking and styling, it can only mean good things.

I’m glad all the gadgetry aboard is offered as an optional extra, as it’s easy to overcomplicate this simple, relaxing pastime.

But all the mod-cons aside, it’s the build quality and sailing ability that counts – and both impressed me. For a couple or family this new Vision looks a smart choice.

FIRST CLASS SAILING WITH TWO CABINS With a VISION 42 you will not only experience first class sailing, you will also be a first class sailor! This is made possible by an extraordinary, unique exterior and interior layout. The companionway from the cockpit to the saloon is moved to starboard in the deck assembly, which opens up new possibilities for the cockpit layout – a cockpit table is incorporated, fitted with a handle to transform it into a sleeping surface. There is also is plenty of space for sunbathing behind the two helms – and not only for the helmsman.

Vision 46 - 8

LIVING SPACE The cockpit is the focus of life on a yacht. From the two helms, the VISION 42 is not only kept perfectly on course, all her sails can be trimmed directly by the helmsman. This makes sailing a VISION 42 with even a small crew not only simple but also very safe. And at the end of a day of sailing, there are a myriad ways to relax on board the VISION 42 while drifting into evening.

Vision 46 - 9

LIFE BELOW DECK Below deck, the VISION 42 is hard to beat for comfort and variability. The large galley provides plenty of work space for preparing a substantial meal, even at sea. You are steady between the sink cabinet placed amidships and the long galley line to port. The saloon table can be sunk into the saloon floor and the navigation area repurposed to become a sofa – on board a VISION 42, this simply means pulling a handle. 17

THE VISION OF LIFE Enjoying life on the water simply should not remain a mere vision. A VISION 46 makes this a reality. This yacht is made for people who want to stay on board for long periods of time without compromising any luxuries – at least, not any which are technically possible on a yacht. The VISION 46 has space for living and storage space for everything you like to have with you when sailing in both the two cabin and three cabin versions.

Vision 46 - 13

LIFE ON THE WATER SHOULD NOT REMAIN A MERE VISION The VISION 46 is made up of a thousand brilliantly conceived details. This is already evident the moment you lay your hands on the helm in the cockpit. Every instrument essential for navigation and control is within easy reach. With a perfect view of the deck and sail trim, the VISION 46 can literally be sailed with the fingertips.

Vision 46 - 14

LIFE BELOW DECK Variability and almost unlimited combinations are the essence of the VISION 46. Would you like a writing desk/dressing table in the owner’s cabin, or perhaps a separate bathroom in the bow? Would you prefer one or two aft cabins? The VISION 46 can accommodate any vision.

Bavaria Vision 46

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: November 22, 2013

vision 46 yacht

Grab your sweetie and let’s go sailing: Almost certainly, somewhere in Germany, in the corporate headquarters for Bavaria Yachts — or perhaps in one of the firm’s two U.S. offices in Annapolis, Maryland, and Mystic, Connecticut — there is a lengthy, detailed mission statement for the company’s new Vision 46 that delves into far more description and nuance than that simple invitation. But I respectfully submit that anything longer is a waste of breath. With this ambitious, clever and even sensuous 46-footer, it seems clear Bavaria set out to conceive and deliver a boat that puts the needs and desires of a close and happy sailing couple at the forefront.

It was an interesting if somewhat esoteric goal. What’s more remarkable about the Vision 46, however, is that they pretty much succeeded. When our Boat of the Year judging panel convenes each fall, they do their level best to reward those boats that best capture the — sorry, it’s unavoidable — “vision” of their designers and builders. And our BOTY judges deemed the Vision 46 a winner, naming it the Best Full-Size Cruiser, 45 to 49 Feet, for 2013.

Before we get too carried away, though, it’s also wise to note that the overall concept for the boat borrowed some of its elements from another European builder of large-scale production runs. This evokes a famous old quote from British writer Charles Caleb Colton: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

Like the French builders of Beneteaus, with their Oceanis and Sense lines, Bavaria now offers two distinct series of yachts: the Cruiser class and the Vision collection (a 42 was recently introduced, and a 50 is in the works). The Oceanis/Cruiser boats are updated but essentially traditional cruising yachts, while the Sense/Vision offerings are innovative, slightly hedonistic craft ideal for long-term living aboard (even parked at a dock) that put a heavy emphasis on big, inviting cockpits (outdoor living rooms, if you will). Both offer simplified optional docking systems that remove the trepidation from close-quarters maneuvering. The French call theirs the Dock & Go, while Bavaria has gone with the Bavaria Docking Control System. While the software, hardware and execution are actually quite different, the ultimate goal, in terms of practicality and marketing, is identical.

So, we can all agree there are similarities, no? But this is a review of the Vision 46, so let’s move forward with some of the many features that make it unique.

vision 46 yacht

We’ll begin where we suspect the boutique British firm Design Unlimited, responsible for the boat’s overall styling, accouterments and accommodations, started — with that roomy cockpit. Someone gave a lot of thought to the steering stations for the twin helms, which are set up so the driver can straddle the wheel to either side while enjoying a nice backrest, which has enough room for a partner to slide in and kick back as well. It’s pretty cool.

So too is the versatile table/lounge to port, which is controlled by an electromagnetic lift so it can be raised and lowered to different heights and can serve as a dining area or, with cushions inserted, a roomy sun deck. The drop-down transom expands the floor plan by adding a spacious swim platform, and the shower head can be affixed to a stainless-steel rail for luxurious outdoor showers. Sweet.

vision 46 yacht

The automatic docking system could be the subject of its own article — a bow thruster, retractable stern thruster and joystick are all prominently involved — and our BOTY judges found it intuitive and straightforward. That said, were it my boat, I think I’d find other uses for the extra 25 grand it adds to the purchase price.

A big reason is that the boat, with a hull from Farr Yacht Design, is quite maneuverable and fun to sail. The jib sheets and mainsheets are both led aft and close at hand, so it’s easy to singlehand. We’re not huge fans of in-mast furling mains but a vertical batten eases the pain somewhat, and the boat is quite slippery. Our sea trial was conducted in 10 to 12 knots on Chesapeake Bay, and on nearly all points of sail, the 46-footer registered speeds from 6.5 to 7.5 knots. Not bad.

Down below, there are several layouts from which to choose, all of which include a big owner’s stateroom forward; again, the emphasis is on a cozy couple. For some reason the central saloon floor is raised, and I tripped over the step a half-dozen times, though that’s probably my problem, and not an inherent design flaw. Another adjustable table in the saloon can be set to different heights and, with more cushions, even serve as a guest double berth. At the foot of the offset companionway there’s a deep indentation that on our test boat was equipped with a coffee maker, though a beer tap could also be inserted. Genius!

On the Vision 46, it was one more smart idea on a boat filled with them.

Bavaria Yachts logo

Designed in 2019, the Bavaria Vision 46 boasts s triking looks with a high-end finish and specification.

The Bavaria Vision 46, has been designed from the outset to embody the cruising sailor’s wish list. What is striking about this boat is the attention to detail, and the endless list of thoughtful features, some high-tech, and some are just common sense, executed simply and elegantly.

The development process for this Bavaria Vision 46 started with consulting cruising sailors from around the world about what would make the perfect sailing cruiser. Bavaria then combined the expert power of Farr Yacht Design and the British boutique firm, Design Unlimited. The result is a boat that will set a new standard in the owner’s cruiser category, with a focus on high-end elegance, comfort and easy handling.

The new Vision Series offers features that were, until now, only seen on mega yachts. The unique cockpit design with offset companionway allows for a large port cockpit table that is electrically lowered and convertible to a day/lounging bed – which creates a true living cockpit, not yet seen in the production cruiser class. The optional push-button self-tacking system makes single and short-handed sailing a pleasure. Additionally, Bavaria’s docking system employs drop-down bow and stern thrusters, coordinated with the main engine for complete control and accuracy in tight quarters.

The Vision’s many unique comfort and handling features combine with elegant interiors, Farr Yacht Design engineering for fast and comfortable passages, and the premium build quality and finish found in all Bavaria Yachts. All combined, this stunning boat is sure to draw attention wherever she drops her hook.

The Bavaria Vision 46, the first in the Vision series, can be customized with two or three cabins, one or two heads and each floor plan includes a separate shower room. And as always with Bavaria Yachts, each boat is built to an owner’s specifications, including an array of wood and upholstery options to choose from.

Cabin variations include:

  • 2 cabins, 1 or 2 heads
  • 3 cabins, 1 or 2 head

Ensure that the slings are placed according to the boats structure and the weight balance of the boat. The boat should hang level keel in the crane, at the same trim as it would float in the water. Should you be using the same crane with slings regularly, then it is advised that you mark the sling positions on the craft at the deck edge.

  • Page 76 Owner‘s manual Maintenance of stainless steel parts The corrosion resistance of stainless steel fittings is based on their ability to constitute a thin skin together with the air, which constitutes a positive electrical potential. Specialists call it CR-passivated (CR stands for chrome). But chrome is negative and a bit less noble than iron in the electrochemical series. If this thin protection skin is damaged the stainless CR gets reactive and less noble than pure chrome. The corrosion then starts. Were you ever annoyed by these little brown spots on the fittings? They are caused by flying rust or particles of iron scale, which are contained in the air and near big towns. As soon as the flying rust settles onto the protective layer of the stainless steel, it destroys the CR-passivity very aggressively and fast.

MORE DETAILS ON XENIA

Bavaria vision 46.

The Bavaria Vision 46 has been designed, from the start, to embody the cruising sailor’s wish list. From the cockpit to the saloon to the cabins, a VISION adapts to every requirement, whether this is a cosy cruise for two or taking a party of friends out. What is striking about this boat is the attention to detail, and the endless list of thoughtful features, some high-tech, and some are just common sense, executed simply and elegantly.

Bavaria Vision 46 – Accomodation

The forward main cabin and en suite is a one-piece unit, with island style queen bed. To aft of the ship, on the port side is an unusually wide twin cabin equipped with two single berths. The bathroom is accessible from the main salon and is divided into separate toilet/shower cubicles. There is a large door in the shower’s rear bulkhead. This provides walk-in access to the second aft cabin. The offset companionway allows for a spacious galley area to please even the most professional of chefs. This comprises a dishwashing island mounted on the centre line, immediately at the bottom of the companionway steps. It houses twin sinks, with a cleverly-designed drying rack higher up and aft, built into the bulkhead. The rest of the galley lies to port. Covers over the cooker and sinks, allow plenty of workbench area for food preparation. That drying rack helps to free up space, too. With the galley and its island wash-up area efficiently using the aft end of the saloon, the designers of this Bavaria Vision 46 could afford to let their creative juices flow for the rest of the area. The saloon table can be lowered electrically to create a large lounger/daybed. This would also be a good berth for additional crew. On the port settee, the centre section hides a decent-sized chart table which slides up from a recess. It’s an easy, quick conversion. The two settee sections fore and aft of the chart table are movable – they’re best described as ottomans. Moved to the saloon table, they become two separate seats or a single bench seat for extra dining. Masses of ambient light and ventilation floods in through large saloon windows and overhead hatches.

Bavaria Vision 46 – On Deck

The unique cockpit design with offset companionway allows for a large port cockpit table that is electrically lowered and convertible to a day/lounging bed – which creates a true living cockpit. Every instrument essential for navigation and control is within easy reach. With a perfect view of the deck and sail trim, the Bavaria vision 46 can literally be sailed with the fingertips. The bathing platform can be lowered manually to easily access the water edge and it features a refreshing shower. Primary Lewmar 55 winches on the cockpit coaming are within arm’s length of the helmsman, and with the German mainsheet system, trimming from either side is easy. Because each of the primaries has a battery of jammers in nearby attendance, swapping the mainsheet for a jib sheet is quick and simple. The sleek decks are enhanced by flush-fitting hatches and the below-deck jib furling drum which gives it good protection from the elements.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PHOTOGRAPHS DISPLAYED ON THIS PAGE ARE NOT OF XENIA HERSELF. THEY ARE STOCK IMAGES PROVIDED BY BAVARIA. WE WILL HAVE PHOTOGRAPHS OF XENIA VERY SOON. Notable Differences are that Xenia does NOT have a teak deck and she DOES have a bimini cover and spray hood.

GNOME 46 is out. Here are all the improvements you need to know

jack-wallen

GNOME 46 offers plenty of polish and tweaks.

The GNOME project today  released GNOME 46.

Within the world of Linux, GNOME is one of the most widely used desktop environments. And although GNOME 46 isn't a major release filled with game-changing newness, there is plenty to be excited about.

Also: The top 5 GNOME extensions I install first (and what they can do for you)

Let's dive into what's new and what's improved.

First off, you'll find all sorts of tiny refinements in the Files file manager (aka Nautilus). The biggest addition, however, is the new global search feature. Instead of Files only searching in the current working directory, the tool will now scour every search location for whatever you're trying to locate. You'll also find options in the Files settings window to customize how you want the search to function.

The team has also added another bit of polish to Files: the ability to set the time and date in either a simple format (i.e. Today 9:56 AM) or a detailed format (such as 03/20/2024 9:56 AM).

GNOME 46 improves the Settings app by adding a new System menu that includes Users, Date & Time, Region & Language, Remote Desktop, Secure Shell, and About. This simplifies the Settings sidebar to make it easier to find what you need. In the same vein, Privacy is now listed as Privacy and Security.

Notifications

Notifications now include a header that informs you from which app the notification originated. Any notification with an associated action button can now also be collapsed and expanded.

I would say the biggest addition here is notification grouping, which GNOME users have requested for some time now. Notifications are now grouped by app, and threads are now combined into a single bubble. This will go a long way to making the notifications system easier to use.

I've long had a "Device can be removed" notification that just wouldn't go away. That pesky bug has finally been fixed. When you remove a USB device, the notification won't overstay its welcome on your desktop.

Online Accounts

The GNOME project has also totally overhauled the GNOME Online Accounts feature. In an effort to improve security, authorization for an online account will now happen within your default web browser.

GNOME 46 also brings new WebDAV and Microsoft Personal account types. When connecting to a Microsoft Personal Account, you'll be able to access OneDrive from within Files.

Miscellaneous updates

GNOME 46 includes several other updates worth mentioning:

  • Improvements to all native GNOME apps (Calendar, Maps, Music, Loupe, and Epiphany)
  • Tap to click enabled by default for touchscreen devices
  • Better fractional scaling support
  • Optimized tracker memory utilization
  • New wallpapers
  • Performance improvements for Mutter
  • System monitor ported to GTK 4
  • Improvements to the minimize animation
  • New avatars

When can you get it?

GNOME 46 is expected to be the default desktop environment in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

If you're anxious to try the latest release sooner, you can also opt to test drive the nightly build of GNOME OS. For that, you can either use Boxes or download the latest version directly. If you do opt to test GNOME 46 with Boxes, make sure to download the ISO from your browser (I've run into trouble with the version downloaded via the Boxes app).

Linux kernel 6.8 offers some exciting new features and 'fixes all over', zorin os 17.1 makes it even easier to run your must-have windows apps on linux.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
