The Hobie Tandem Island Mirage trimaran sailing kayak is the two-seater big brother to the Adventure Island (AI), which was designed and built by Hobie due to popular demand. The ‘TI’ as it is otherwise known is bigger, faster, more stable and offers greater carrying capacity and versatility. The TI is a tandem trimaran sailing vessel that is easily the most capable Hobie Miragedrive boat, partly because it can also be used as a kayak and Polynesian-style outrigger as well as a sailing trimaran. The ability to configure the TI to suit the conditions on the day makes it a highly capable craft that can do more in a greater variety of conditions.

Used as a kayak the Hobie Tandem Island is the fastest tandem model in Hobie’s fleet, as well as being the most stable. As an outrigger it is even more stable and doesn’t suffer too much from a loss of speed. When there is little or no wind the TI can be used to great effect in either configuration, ideal for touring, sight-seeing, kayak fishing and camping trips. When the wind is blowing, however, the TI absolutely shines in it’s default state as a trimaran. Light winds will move the TI along at a steady pace and stronger winds will push it along with eyebrow raising speeds, the respective experience ranging from serenely relaxing to downright thrilling.

The Hobie Mirage Tandem Island, a mouthful we’ll refer to as the HMTI, is the latest incarnation of Hobie’s capable and creative engineering team. This triple-play trimaran can be paddled, pedaled, and sailed using dozens of Hobie’s in-house designed parts. A specialized Torqeedo electric outboard ( www.torqeedo.com ), which can be dropped into a drive slot, adds a forth dimension to this multi-tasking multihull. The Torqeedo comes complete with a remote battery and throttle control, and whether it’s used for mini-motorsailing, or for light tackle fishing by the angler who prefers to troll quietly and sail home—Hobie has hit the mark with this latest innovation.

As sailors skeptical of boats that try to offer too much of a good thing, we were a little concerned about the HMTI’s mega multitasking. We hoped it would prove to be a sequel to the woodworker’s Shopsmith, an elegant power tool that can be morphed from a table saw into seven different power tools.

At the heart of Hobie’s new sailing design is a ruggedly built, roto-molded, two-seat, sit-on-top kayak, a kayak concept that Hobie and many others have been building for a decade or so. Added to that foundation are two well-proportioned amas set on articulating crossmembers (akas), creating a very stable multihull platform. This mono-to-multihull transformation solves the righting moment requirement linked to sail carrying. A boomless roller-furling sail on a two-piece carbon-fiber spar that can be stepped as easily as a beach umbrella can be planted in the sand completes the sailing part of the package. The heel of the mast simply clicks into a deck-mounted receiver.

A double-ended mainsheet allows trimming at either cockpit location. The old who’s-the-sheet-hog rule prevails, and as with any double-ended sheeting arrangement, lines occasionally need to be reshuffled between the crew.

Steering is actuated via small levers situated on the sidedeck, to port of each seat well. These mini tillers work the opposite of a conventional tiller, but by reminding yourself to treat the lever like a wheel, the steering quickly becomes second nature.

Testers found the seats to be both comfortable and effectively located with all controls within easy reach. The centerboard has a simple lever-operated up-and-down control that retracts the foil completely for easy beaching.

Getting underway from a dock entails setting up the outboard ama ahead of time, and then, after a push away from the dock and a couple of either pedal cycles or paddle strokes, simply swinging the dockside ama into its place. Once both of the ama’s locking struts have been engaged, a tug of the sheet unfurls the sail and the usual trim-and-steer routine takes hold.

In 10 knots of breeze, the boat’s a blast to sail. Being so close to the water makes even modest boat speed exhilarating. The HMTI offers middle-of-the-fleet windward performance plus great reaching ability. It would be a stretch to call the HMTI an efficient light-air sailboat. However, among the fringe benefits of this multipurpose multihull are the mix-and-match propulsion modes. Sailors who want to work the quads a little while sailing can bolster light-air performance by pedaling the boat and increasing the airflow over the sail, creating a significant boost in boat speed. If you’re less inclined toward human propulsion, set the boat up with the Torqeedo outboard option, and the silent electric drive redefines the concept of motorsailing.

In truth, regardless of whether the amas are folded in, the HMTI is not a whole lot of fun to paddle when it’s decked out in sailing trimaran configuration. The increase in windage and wetted surface are just too much. But on days when kayaking is the goal, leave the mast, amas, and akas at home, and you’ll have a fun double kayak to paddle—a great way to explore an estuary or narrow river. Take along the Torqeedo if you want a break or if you want the ability to extend your exploration range. This is a versatile boat that seems to have a wide range of boating appeal, and it’s a prime example of electrical propulsion put to good use.

Hobie Adventure Island 2021

The Adventure Island is a one person Trimaran kayak that is designed for sailing but can equally be pedalled or even paddled!

Unfurl the 6.04 m² / 65 ft² surface area sail from the 5.03 m / 16' 6" tall carbon composite mast and ride the wind with ease! The Adventure Island features fold-out AMAs for lateral stability and a drop-down daggerboard to prevent lateral slipping, making the "AI" a very capable sailing craft that is easy to use! You can pick up some serious speed and have some great fun with this kayak. Turning the AI is made easy via the stern rudder, which is controlled by a handle positioned adjacent to the seating position. The main sail can also be controlled, unfurled and reefed all from the seat too. The AI makes a great sailing craft for coastal waters and large inland waters. For enhanced performance 'Off-the-Wind', add a Adventure Island Spinnaker and the AI will come alive!

When the wind drops the fun can still continue. Simply reef in the sail and use the Mirage Drive to pedal the craft, so that you can continue your adventure or head back to shore! If you fancy a day paddling then leave the AMAs at home and take the main hull out on the water - at 16ft 7in length it paddles quite well!

Comfort is ensured for long days on the water by the fully adjutsable Vantage CT seat, which features Boa Lumbar Support. The AI features the Mirage Drive 180 full power pedal drive in forwards... and reverse! Switching between forwards and reverse is as simple and easy as pulling a toggle on the drive system. The drive system features 'Glide Technology' with roller bearings found on the major pivoting components of the drive, for a smoother and easier pedalling experience. The Mirage Drive 180 comes equipped with the new ST Turbo Kick Up Fins. Kick Up fins offer worry-free pedalling - should you strike an object with the fins they simply kick up out of harms way to help reduce the risk of damage.

The Adventure Island is a very capable kayak for fishing in both inshore and offshore waters, and comes with two moulded-in rod holders and the Lowrance-Ready system. The Lowrance ready system makes fish finder installation easy using a large transducer scupper under the kayak and a system of deck seals for waterproof cable routing.

Storage space is plentiful and loading up for a multi-day expedition, weekend camp or days fishing is no problem. The large bow hatch will swallow plenty of gear for storage in-hull. Two 8 inch Twist-Lock hatches feature at the stern and just forwards of the seat allowing for easy access to the hull for storage. A generous rear tankwell will also take plenty of gear or a storage crate for when you need to load up with gear. Mesh-pockets feature in the cockpit to store the small items you want to keep within easy reach. For loads of extra deck space, add the Adventure Island Trampoline Kit across the AKAs!

When it comes to docking or storing your AI, the AMAs fold in against the hull at the push of a button. An AI can be transported on a strong and quality roof rack, but custom built trailers are also available to make life easier.

The Hobie kayaks are famous for their Mirage Drive pedal system. This system consists of a pair of pedals that drive two rubber fins side to side to propel the kayak forward. The revolutionary Mirage Drive 180 allows you to pedal in reverse, all at the pull of a toggle! The Mirage System is silent while pedalling and creates no splash, it also allows you to effortlessly pedal the kayak with your feet while keeping your hands free, perfect for fishing and photography.

Equipped with ARC pedal cranks that adjust with the push of a button to accommodate users from child size to tall adults. The Adventure Island features a 65 ft² / 6.04 m² Sail with battens. The sailing rig features a carbon composite two-piece mast and a Roller-Furling system for ease of use.

Retractable Island Rudder System

Hobie's come up with a Rudder that is easily controllable with a lever to steer as well as two pull handles on either side of the kayak: a "Down" handle to deploy the rudder and an "Up" handle to lift the rudder out of the water when in shallow water and for landing.

Sail Controls

The sail can easily be controlled from the seating position using the supplied cords and lines, cleat systems and roller-bearing furling system.

Lowrance Ready System

Built-in transducer scupper mount and pre-installed thru-hull cable plugs come fitted as standard. This makes fish finder installation quick and easy!

Rubber 'Hookless' Side Pockets

Keep the items you need close and handy like sun cream, snack bar or waterproof camera. The rubberised mesh prevents fouling by fishing hooks if used as a tackle storage space.

Twist & seal hatch

Twist and seal hatches are simple to use and are hinged so you will never have to worry about losing the cover. The hatches allow you to store equipment below deck.

An absolute joy on the water, the Hobie Mirage Adventure Island is an impressively approachable trimaran sailing kayak.

The Hobie Mirage Adventure Island is based on the tried and tested design of the Adventure kayak but with two outriggers added. It has a fast, sleek hull and excellent stability, making it a very popular choice for covering long distances. It’s great to paddle and pedal, but really comes into its own when sailed.

With the sail, the Adventure Island features a boomless, roller-furling sail rig with 5.34 square metres of sail area, which provides excellent performance that is completely manageable from the cockpit with the pull of a line. The sail will reduce in size to suit all abilities and wind strengths up to a force 4. Two retractable amas or outriggers can fold up against the side of the boat with the simple pull of a line for easy transport, docking and manoeuvrability.

The Hobie Adventure Island has been designed with ease of use in mind. Well placed lifting handles make this kayak simple to car-top. On arrival you can just wheel it into the water, fix the outriggers with pop-on arm, drop the rudder, unfurl the sail and off you go.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
