These boats prove that size doesn’t have to mean slow.

When American businessman John Staluppi embarked on his yachting journey, it was to break records. He wanted his first yacht to be the first boat over 100 feet to exceed 30 knots, or 34.5 mph. He achieved it with the 118-foot  For Your Eyes   Only,  delivered in 1985. It was also the first motoryacht in the US to have a combination of MTU diesel engines with water-jet propulsion.

His second yacht would smash all previous records. Delivered by Heesen in 1988,  Octopussy  fulfilled the Bond enthusiast’s aim to break the then 50-knot barrier with a top end of 53.17 knots (61 mph)—a speed that every other shipyard at the time said couldn’t be done.  Octopussy  immediately entered the record books as the world’s fastest yacht.

“That record was important to me because when you pull into any place there’s always a bigger boat or a prettier boat, but there aren’t many people who can say, ‘Hey, this is the fastest yacht in the world,’” Staluppi told  us .

Heesen’s latest delivery, the 197-foot Ultra G, is one of the Dutch yard’s fastest projects these days, with a propulsion package totaling 22,000 horsepower, including four water jets that deliver a top speed of 37 knots (42.57 mph).

Of course, 43 mph is a paltry number compared to many of the yachts on this list, including the new Bolide 80. That Italian stallion, which will make its debut at the Monaco Yacht Show, runs at a blistering 84 mph. It shows that speed, even in the large motoryacht category, is very much alive.

Here are 13 of the fastest motoryachts, past and present, that have ever been on the water.

1. Bolide 80 | 84 mph

Victory Marine calls the Bolide 80 its first “Hyper Muscle Yacht,” which will be part of a limited-edition series from 60 to 170 feet. Designer Brunello Acampora and his tema of engineers pulled out all the stops on this 80, creating a full-carbon-fiber boat with more than 6,000 horsepower. The multi-stepped hull helps propel the Bolide to its top speed of 70 knots (84 mph), while accomplishing the seemingly impossible task of burning about half the fuel of a much smaller flybridge motoryacht at lower cruising speeds. The designer took care to give the Bolide a streamlined profile, with aerodynamic shapes to reduce resistance. The interior includes the captain’s cabin, a full-sized galley, open salon, and a forward owner’s area with a bedroom, en suite and wardrobe area. It will make its global debut at the Monaco Yacht Show.

2. ‘Foners’ | 80.56 mph

Clocking a thrilling 70.10 knots (80.56 mph), the 136-foot  Foners  has maintained pole position as the world’s fastest superyacht for over 20 years. Powered by two 1,280hp MAN engines coupled to three Rolls-Royce 6,700 hp gas turbines driving three KaMeWa water jets, the all-aluminum boat is less about piercing waves and more about parting the seas. Delivered in 2000 by Spanish shipyard Izar as the King of Spain’s royal yacht, no expense was spared, including a superstructure lined with Aramid fiber for the express purpose of bulletproofing the interior.

3. ‘World Is Not Enough’ | 77.1 mph

You need to only look at the 007-inspired name to know that  World Is Not Enough  is another rapid racer commissioned by John Staluppi, this time with an opulent interior designed by his wife Jeanette in partnership with Evan K Marshall. Delivered in 2004 by Millennium Super Yachts, the 139-footer is powered by two Paxman diesel engines and two Lycoming gas turbines to produce a staggering 20,600hp and a breathtaking 67 knots (77.1 mph). When not leaving other boats behind,  World Is Not Enough  has a cruising range of 3800 nautical miles at a comfortable speed of 10 knots.

4. ‘Galeocerdo’ | 74.8 mph

Wally founder Luca Bassani designed the 118-foot  Galeocerdo  to maintain speed in rough seas. Launched in 2003 by Rodriquez Yachts, the boat racks up an eye-watering 65 knots (74.8 mph), thanks to its three Vericor TF50 gas turbines, each driving a Rolls-Royce KaMeWa water jet. Another performance-enhancing feature is the lightweight titanium exhaust system designed to resist the extreme temperatures generated by the gas turbines. Wind tunnel tested at the Ferrari facility in Maranello, Italy, the boat generates 16,800hp and a 45-knot (51.8-mph) cruising speed that’s faster than most motoryachts running flat out. It also enjoys a highly futuristic exterior design.

5. Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 | 72.5 mph

When Italian supercar brand Lamborghini teamed up with yachting stalwart The Italian Sea Group, the end result had to be style and performance. The Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is all about the power of ‘63’. Designed and built to celebrate the year 1963 when Ferruccio Lamborghini founded his car company, the 63-footer delivers a whiplashing top speed of 63 knots (72.5 mph). And naturally, it’s one of just 63 in the series that will ever be made. Built out of carbon fiber, it’s fitted with two MAN V12-2000HP engines. MMA fighter Conor McGregor took delivery of hull number one in 2020, which reportedly cost $4 million.

6. ‘Chato’ | 71.9 mph

Back in the mid-1980s, passionate Baglietto customer and leading US Porsche and VW dealer Baron John von Neumann, commissioned a new 85-ft. speed demon from the Italian builder. The entrepreneur was tired of his 34-knot (39-mph) Baglietto getting creamed from Monaco to St. Tropez by faster cruisers. With a hull design by the legendary Alcide Sculati, the all-aluminum  Chato  came with MTU’s latest 3,480hp V16s coupled to KaMeWa waterjets. Weighing 60 tons, and packing almost 7,000 hp, the military-looking superyacht with its battleship-gray paint and bright-red diagonal hull stripes, hit an astonishing top speed of 62.5 knots (71.9 mph) during sea trials.  Chato  is currently for sale in the South of France for $715,000.

7. ‘Oci Ciornie’ | 69.04 mph

Oci Ciornie’s Vripack-designed interior may take inspiration from aircraft designs, but it’s the boat’s naval architecture by Don Shead and the combination of two 1,800hp MTU 16V 2000 M90 engines, a 4,600 hp AVCO Lycoming gas turbine and Arneson surface drives that put it on this list. Delivered in 1998 by Palmer Johnson with an aluminum hull, the 82-foot boat thrusts through water at 60 knots (69.04 mph), giving all eight guests the waterborne ride of their lives.

8. ‘Destriero’ | 68 mph

The numbers almost defy logic. With a length of 224 feet, the all-aluminum superyacht  Destriero  is massive. Now add a trio of GE Aviation LM1600 gas turbines totaling an insane 60,000 hp and the incredulity only increases. Flat out,  Destriero  could scythe through waves at a staggering 59 knots, or 68 mph. Back in 1992, just one year after its launch, the Fincantieri-built rocketship showed its chops by challenging the famous Blue Riband trans-Atlantic speed record. Averaging 53.09 knots for the 3,106 nautical-mile run,  Destriero  shattered the record, only to be denied the trophy for being classed as a private yacht and not a commercial passenger vessel. Sadly, today the iconic yacht lies largely abandoned at one of Lurssen’s yards in Germany, awaiting rescue.

9. ‘Ermis²’ | 65.59 mph

Some yachts feature slippery hull designs, others are propelled by rockets, but the McMullen & Wing-built  Ermis²  is one of the fastest yachts on the superyacht circuit thanks to its lightweight materials. Built from a combination of carbon/epoxy, aerospace grade carbon fiber and titanium, the 123-foot boat taps out at 57 knots (65.59 mph.) Delivered in 2007, its 10,944 horsepower comes from three MTU 16V 4000 M90 engines. Designed inside and out by Rob Humphreys, its classic looks disguise the speed demon within.

10. ‘Why Not U’ | 63.3 mph

Why Not U  is a yacht that comfortably cruises at 47 knots (54.1 mph)—a speed most owners only dream of reaching. When time is of the essence, the boat cranks up its Vericor TF40 gas turbine engines to max out at 55 knots (63.3 mph). Delivered by Overmarine in 2001,  Why Not U ’s 4.3-foot draft makes it well suited for cruising shallow waters, while its sunbathing areas allow guests to catch some rays traveling at the speed of light.

11. ‘Alamshar’ | 52 mph

Alamshar  is another custom collaboration between Donald Blount and Pininfarina commissioned by Aga Khan IV, this time with interiors by Redman Whiteley Dixon. It was reportedly built for an estimated $200 million at the Devonport shipyard in Falmouth, United Kingdom, and took 13 years to complete. When it was eventually delivered in 2014, Alamshar’s top speed of 45 knots (51.78 mph), generated by twin Rolls-Royce Marine engines and three waterjets, seemed worth the wait.

12. ‘Moon Goddess’ | 51.78 mph

Exterior designed by Espen Øino with an interior by Franco Zuretti, the all-aluminum Moon Goddess is a 115-foot yacht with a turquoise hull that matches the color of its oversized leather sunpads. When cruising at 30 knots (34.52 mph) or tearing up the oceans at 45 knots (51.78 mph), most other boats just catch a glimpse of sea spray that the planing yacht leaves in its wake. It’s powered by twin MTU 16V 4000 M90 diesel engines with twin water jets, which generate a combined 7,498 hp.

13. ‘Azzam’ | 35.7 mph

At a staggering 590 feet bow-to-stern, the Lurssen-built  Azzam  earns the title of world’s longest privately owned gigayacht. But with its remarkable-for-the-size top speed of 31 knots (35.7 mph), it’s also the fastest. Twin 12,000hp MTU V20 turbo-diesels do the day-to-day powering at up to 18 knots (20.7 mph). But crank up the twin GE LM2500 gas turbines, coupled to four Wartsila waterjets, and there’s a staggering 94,000hp on tap. Of course, like  Azzam ‘s original owner, it helps if you own a few oil wells: At max speed, the yacht reportedly burns 13 tons of fuel an hour. Launched in 2013 at a reported cost of some $600 million,  Azzam  accommodates 30 guests pampered by up to 80 crew.

Yacht builder Heesen has just launched its largest ever steel superyacht , a 67-metre vessel named ‘Project Sparta’, owing to its gladiatorial strength and its extensive spa and wellness offering on board. 

Proudly glowing in ‘Venetian’ red and ‘snow white’, the 1200 GT vessel is now in its final commissioning stages in the Heesen harbour, before it heads for rigorous trials in the North Sea. 

With enough space for a 65-square-metre wellness area, which features an elliptical pool, a steam room, sauna and gym, Project Sparta has taken the crown for the largest steel yacht in Heesen’s fleet from the 60-metre Lusine ship, which was on display at last year’s Monaco Yacht Show .

Alongside the 6.5-metre infinity pool there’s a private ‘owners’ deck’ – suitable for an UHNW yacht aficionado who needs the occasional break from their hosting duties at lively parties out at sea. And, with a capacity for 12 guests, two staff and 14 crew members, lively entertaining is the aim of the game.

There are ample spaces for relaxation and rest on board, with two owners’ suites on the private deck and four guest rooms.

Winch Design has drawn upon nature to dress and decorate the boat’s interiors, with the three separate decks reflecting the earth, water and air. 

An earth-inspired ‘main saloon’ contains a set of dining chairs which have been upholstered in palm leaves, while a solid oak coffee table with a ‘forest green’ marble surface takes centre stage in the room.

‘State of the art’ in-house engineering at Heesen

The crew quarters and technical elements of Project Sparta have been designed at Heesen’s shipyard in Oss, while the vessel’s striking interior cabinets have also been designed ‘in-house’, several hundred kilometres away at Heesen’s factory in Winterswijk.

With 100 craftspeople, the shipbuilder is one of the few in the world with its own cabinet-making facilities. The firm says it deploys ‘state of the art machinery’ and searches for ‘the best veneers, precious leathers and premium fabrics.’

‘We take pride in our ability to create complex custom yachts that are expertly engineered and built to meet the highest Dutch quality standard,’ says Peter van der Zanden, Heesen’s head of engineering.

‘Our team eagerly embraces the challenges posed by full-custom yachts. It’s an opportunity for us to showcase the exceptional levels of excellence we can achieve. Sparta is a testament to our commitment to delivering the finest superyachts’.

Ten of the world's biggest superyachts: Interactive tool reveals the stunning vessels worth nearly £200M with concert halls, a submarine and even botanical gardens

W hen she slowly made her way down the slipway into the River Lagan in Belfast , RMS Titanic was described as the most luxurious way of crossing the Atlantic Ocean. 

Departing Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York City in April 1912 on board were some of the elites of American and British society. Among them was John Jacob Astor, the richest man to travel on Titanic. 

Today's super rich would not countenance using a passenger service. Today's superyachts have some of the luxury features seen onboard Titanic, such as a swimming pool, or a sauna. 

At 269-metres long, Titanic was far larger than any modern superyacht, though these floating luxury palaces designed only to carry a fraction of the passengers and crew. 

At $7.5m, she was one of the most expensive ships of time - a value today of almost $200m. Today's multi billionaires spend far more to carry themselves and their closest friends and relations. 

For those who have spent more than $500m on their yacht, they have to budget around 10 per cent of the build price to operate their vessel.

However, some of the yachts with greater numbers of crew could see the 10 per cent figure increase dramatically up to more than £100m a year. 

When cruising, the largest super yachts burn at least 500litres of diesel an hour. The average family car's tank is between 50-80 litres. 

Of the top ten superyachts, eight have been built since 2002 and are at least 146.3metres in length. 

One has been made in the UK, another in the UAE, one is from Denmark and the remainder are from Denmark. 

 1. Assam (180.61m)

The Assam has a missile defence system and his owned by Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan. 

The $600m yacht was built by Lurssen in Germany. It is able to carry 36 guests and a total of 60 crew.

2. Eclipse (162.5m)

The 13,564-tonne vessel cost former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and estimated $700m. 

Until Assam's launch, it was the world's largest superyacht. Eclipse had a helicopter landing pad and a hangar to hold the chopper. It also has a large deck pool and is capable of carrying 36 guests and 70 crew. 

 3. Dubai (162m) 

When it was launched in 2006, Dubai was the largest superyacht on the high seas - until Roman Abramovich. 

The yacht is owned by Sheikh Mohammed and is the only one on the list that was built outside Europe. Dubai was built in the United Arab Emirates and has a crew of 88. It can carry 48 guests and has a large swimming pool. 

Guests on board the $500m vessel are able to avail of a mini submarine. 

4. Blue (160.6m)

This $600m yacht has a gross tonnage of 14,785. It was launched in 2022 and was built by Lurssen of Germany. 

The vessel, which costs an estimated $60m a  year is owned by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan. It is capable of carrying 48 guests serviced by 88 crew. 

5. Dilbar (156m)

Another build by Germany's Lurssen, this 2016, 15,817-tonne superyacht is owned by Alishier Usmanov. 

It was seized shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine as part of a campaign of sanctions against Oligarchs with links to the Kremliln. 

Dilbar, which is named after Usmanov's mother has its own helicopter and can an indoor swimming pool. 

It is also understood to have 1,000 custom-designed pillows and cushions on board.  

It can carry 36 guests and has a crew of 84. It is one of the most expensive superyachts of all time with an estimated price of $800m. 

6. Al Said (155m) 

When at sea, the yacht is accompanied by the Omani navy. It's engines produce 22,000hp and can cruise at 14kts. 

It is capable of accommodating 70 guests attended to by a crew of 174.  

7. El Mahrousa (150.57m)

El Mahrousa is the oldest superyacht on the list having been built in the UK in 1865 by Samuda. 

It has a narrow beam of 12.98 metres and weighs in at only 4,560 tonnes. 

It was originally ordered by the governor of Egypt. 

El Mahrousa has been extended several times over the years and was last refit in 1992. 

8. A+ (147.24m)

The A+ was built in Breman by Lurssen in 2012 and features a range of 5,000 nautical miles and includes a state -of-the-art cinema system as well as a swimming pool. 

The vessel's range is possible due to her 900,000litre diesel fuel tanks. 

She also carries 100,000 litres of fresh water.  

9.  Prince Abdulaziz (147.01)

Despite being built in 1984, Prince Abulaziz was refitted in 2023. 

She is powered by two 12-cylider 8,000hp diesel engines and is capable at cruising at 18 knots and has a maximum range of approximately 5,000 nautical miles.   

10. Opera (146.35) 

Opera was launched in 2023 and is owned by Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. 

It cost an estimated £450m and was another yacht built by Lurssen in Germany. 

The Opera was built after a shipyard fire in 2018 destroyed an earlier version of the vessle.

Ultra-wealthy people are working remotely from their superyachts and running their businesses from the high seas

• Ultra-wealthy people are using their superyachts as offices to work remotely and broker deals. 
• This contrasts with companies like Amazon and Meta, which have rolled out strict RTO policies.
• Yacht salesman Richard Lambert told Fortune  they're using them to run their businesses at sea. 

The pandemic fuelled a boom in remote working for many industries and yachting is no exception.

But while many companies are enforcing strict return-to-office mandates, the ultra-wealthy are continuing to embrace remote working from their yachts. Richard Lambert, head of sales at Burgess Yachts, told Fortune last month that high-net-worth individuals are using their vessels to work from the high seas. "These are self-made successful business people who need to be able to turn around and actually run their businesses," he said. "We have clients spend up to four months a year on board and be able to actually effectively run their businesses." As Insider's Tom Porter recently reported , the superrich have the benefit of solidifying their business connections and brokering deals away from the public eye when on board. 

The working conditions are far different from those of white collar workers at companies including Amazon, Google and Meta, who have ordered employees to work from the office more often. 

Since April 2022, Google has instructed its employees to be present in the office for three days a week, and Amazon adopted a similar policy in February, as did Meta in June . Both Meta and Google are actively tracking employee attendance. But it's not just billionaires who are working from the seas. Speaking to travel and lifestyle publication Here Magazine using only their first names, married couple Roxy and Phil said they bought a 47-feet sailboat and now work remotely whilst sailing around the world. 

"Our expenses are roughly $3,500/month, including our $1,350 boat payment," the couple told Here. "We took out a loan, similar to a mini-mortgage, to buy our sailboat. It's the first piece of 'property' like this we've ever owned." Living and working on a boat appears to be a growing trend. Research by Rightboat shows that Google searches for "how to live on a boat" have increased by more than 70% in the past year alone.  Burgess Yachts didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, made outside of normal working hours.

Greenpeace calls for high seas protected area in Galapagos

Greenpeace on Monday called for the creation of a high seas marine protected zone under a new UN treaty to secure a much wider area around Ecuador's famous Galapagos archipelago.

The islands, whose unique fauna and flora inspired British scientist Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, are home to one of the world's largest marine protected areas, in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

But "just outside the Galapagos protected area, industrial fishing fleets continue to plunder the oceans. We must protect this area," Ruth Ramos of the Greenpeace Protect the Oceans campaign said in a statement.

Greenpeace urged governments to ratify the so-called High Seas Treaty adopted by United Nations member states last June to allow for the creation of an expanded protected area in international waters, outside of any country's jurisdiction.

"This historic treaty, once ratified, will enable us to protect a vast area of international waters near the Galapagos Islands, safeguarding a vital migratory superhighway for marine life such as sharks and turtles," said Ramos.

The environmental activist group is carrying out a scientific expedition in the Galapagos, which is home to some 3,000 marine species like sea turtles, hammerhead sharks, sea lions and marine iguanas, to name a few.

The Galapagos islands, some 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) off the mainland of Ecuador, have flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world.

'Historic opportunity'

The existing Galapagos marine reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site created in 1998, is "one of the best examples of ocean protection in action. But it is still an exception in a world where only three percent of the ocean is currently fully or highly protected," Ramos said earlier in the expedition.

The High Seas Treaty was adopted after more than 15 years of discussions to extend environmental protections to international waters which make up more than 60 percent of the world's oceans.

It can go into effect 120 days after being ratified by 60 countries—a goal activists hope to reach by 2025.

So far it has been signed by several dozen states but ratified by only two: Palau and Chile.

Ramos said the governments of Ecuador, Panama, Colombia and Costa Rica have taken "admirable steps" to protect the oceans in their national waters.

Under the treaty, "they now have a historic opportunity to demonstrate global leadership by protecting this key area of the high seas and further safeguarding the beauty and biodiversity of the Galapagos region for future generations."

Greenpeace said this could be the first marine protected area created since the treaty was adopted and "would remove the threat of industrial fishing fleets."

"It would also protect a key area of ocean that many threatened migratory species from Galapagos and adjacent marine regions must cross in order to reach key coastal habitats for pupping, nesting and feeding."

The post-pandemic landscape has meant that when it comes to arranging your work schedule, words such as “hybrid,” “remote,” and “flexi” have all come into their own.

Of course, if you want to take working remotely to an extreme, what better place to dial in than a superyacht? While yachts pride themselves as sanctuaries of escape, they can also be platforms to harness focus and keep on top of working life, with ever-changing sea views, enabling more extended vacation periods to be had.

Superyachts are redesigning the traditional office setup, and these floating offices have everything from cutting-edge technology and high-speed connectivity to luxe furnishings to take long calls and panoramic views conducive to important business meetings—or you can simply stare out the window at marine life or cloudscapes between tasks.

‘Come Together’

Amels onboarded the designer Espen Oino to pen the 197-foot Come Together , which was featured at the 2022 Monaco Yacht Show. For the interior, Winch Design was called upon. The contemporary and beachy interiors evoke a sense of serenity, with a hint of masculinity, in the office area, which is part of the owner’s suite. To enable a seamless transition from work to entertainment, the coffee table has a pop-up TV screen.

‘Dream’

When it comes to onboard office space, sometimes not enough space is a given, but this isn’t the case on the 349-foot Dream . Perfect for hosting those larger charter parties, the yacht has 22 luxury suites and amenities that cater to everyone. The business center includes several desks and video conferencing systems as well as a large table for meetings. As one of the larger charter yachts on the market, Dream is an ideal base for larger corporate events.

‘Quasar’

New to the charter scene this year, Quasar has two master suites. The first benefits from the private office on the main deck, with a desk that soaks in the ocean views. With work and play in mind, this 150-foot Bilgin yacht has been designed for the purpose of meetings and work, but with a comfortable couch that can be transformed into a space for watching movies and playing games.

‘Planet Nine’

Dmitry Korchak (born February 19, 1979 in Elektrostal/Moscow Oblast) is a Russian tenor and conductor.

Korchak received his musical education at the Moscow Choral Academy. In 2004 he won prizes at the “Francisco Viñas” International Singing Competition in Barcelona and at the Plácido Domingo Operalia International Competition in Los Angeles.

As a singer he has appeared at La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, the Paris Opera Bastille, London’s Covent Garden and New York’s Carnegie Hall. He has collaborated with artists such as Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Plácido Domingo, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta and Kent Nagano.

From 2017 to 2020, Dmitry Korchak was Principal Guest Conductor at the Novosibirsk Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, where he directed his own festival, and Guest Conductor at the Mikhailovsky Theater in Saint Petersburg.

Korchak has made several guest appearances at the Kissinger Sommer, the Salzburg Festival and the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, where he also worked as a conductor. Korchak also worked with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others.

How to play ironsworn: starforged.

The game is made up of several moves. As the player tells their story, they pause when they trigger a move. Usually this is moment when the story can move in different directions, like making a dangerous maneuver or attacking an enemy.

The player rolls a six sided die and two ten sided dice. The six sided die and the character’s trait are compared to the numbers on the ten sided dice. If the player roll is higher than both, they succeed easily.

If either of the ten dice is higher, the success comes with a cost of complication. If both are higher, the move is a failure. This is where the oracle comes in to play.

Oracles provide writing prompts that keep the narrative going. Perhaps the maneuver is successful but the ship dammages some component that needs to be fixed later. These charts are also useful for when the player is stumped on where the story goes next.

The oracles allow for solo play but each game contains multiple game modes. Guided play reflect more traditional RPG play with a Game Master and other players. Co-op play allows all players to face the oracle and turns the story into more of a writer’s room.

What’s Included In Sundered Isles?

The main book adapts Starforged to an Age of Sail setting. It includes new moves, tables and advice on how to build a nautical fantasy setting. The book also includes several random tables that can be used with other pirate role playing games to inspire enemies, allies, encounters and ships.

Backers also recieve an asset deck which features all the character elements that a player can use to customize their experience. Each one has moves that affect the narrative. These assets also include important parts of the ship.
