Royal albert hall celebrates 25 years of phantom.

25th anniversary royal albert hall phantom of the opera

First Published 1 July 2011, Last Updated 1 July 2011

The 25th anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical The Phantom Of The Opera is to be celebrated with a two-date staging at the Royal Albert Hall on 1 and 2 October.

Former Phantom Ramin Karimloo will partner Sierra Boggess – with whom he starred alongside in Love Never Dies – in this fully staged production featuring a cast and orchestra of over 200.

The duo play the Phantom and his love interest Christine in this tale of life beneath the stage of the Paris Opera House. Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1911 gothic novel, Lloyd Webber’s musical opened on 9 October 1986 at Her Majesty’s theatre , where it still resides today after becoming one of the best loved musicals of all time.

After playing the title role in The Phantom Of The Opera, Karimloo went on to originate the role for Lloyd Webber’s continuation of the story, Love Never Dies, at the Adelphi theatre. Both he and Boggess – who played Christine – received nominations for their performances at the 2011 Olivier Awards.

The pair will be joined in this new staging of The Phantom Of The Opera by Barry James, Gareth Snook, Liz Robertson as Madame Giry – who also appeared in Love Never Dies – and Wynne Evans, along with some promised special guests.

Producer Cameron Mackintosh said: “The success of the show has become the stuff of theatrical legend so Andrew and I felt we needed to create a really special performance to celebrate the 25th anniversary.”

The musical’s quarter-century celebrations follow a year after the 25th birthday of another Cameron Mackintosh production, Les Misérables, which was celebrated with a concert production at the O2 and a 25th anniversary production at the Barbican.

Tickets go on sale for the Phantom’s birthday celebrations on 4 July, and can be purchased on 0845 401 5045.

25th anniversary royal albert hall phantom of the opera

Last Updated on 12th April 2021

Douglas Mayo reviews Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom Of The Opera 25th Anniversary Production at the Royal Albert Hall in 2011 streamed on YouTube as part of The Shows Must Go On.

Phantom Of The Opera 25th Anniversary Review

The Phantom Of The Opera – 25th Anniversary Production Royal Albert Hall, London Streamed via YouTube 5 Stars

When Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd Webber set about redefining the modern musical through world-class productions and marketing and promotions on a level usually reserved for major movies, I don’t think that either foresaw the fact that their collaborations would survive and be entertaining nearly 35 years on. The hunt to find the perfect lyricist saw a young Charles Hart together with Richard Stilgoe deliver a libretto that perfect balanced Andrew’s score for this most romantic musical.

When The Phantom Of The Opera was nearing its 25th Anniversary, Cameron Mackintosh proposed an enormous celebration of The Phantom Of The Opera at The Royal Albert Hall . This would be no normal concert presentation, the nature of the show and the way in which it had originally been staged by Hal Prince, Gillian Lynne and with the extraordinary sets and costumes of Maria Bjornson, meant something of a very special nature and what many of you saw last night was the result.

Ramin Karimloo

Retaining many of the iconic elements of Maria Bjornson’s original set design and clever use of projection production designer Jon Driscoll and set designer Matt Kinley together with lighting Tsars Andrew Bridge and Patrick Woodroffe created a new place for the Phantom to wreak havoc and on a concert platform no less!

A large part of the Phantom’s magic lies in its majestic score and this concert gave Andrew Lloyd Webber and co-orchestrator David Cullen a chance to take this score and really show it off. The Phantom Of The Opera boasts the largest orchestra the West End but for this orchestration, it was bolstered to an incredible 48 musicians under the baton of Anthony Inglis and I doubt you will ever hear better. Many who read my reviews know I am a sucker when it comes to musicals, to have real instruments, particularly when it comes to strings and here with crystal clear sound by Mick Potter, the score sparkled.

Sierra Boggess Phantom Of The Opera 25th Anniversary

Ramin Karimloo reprised the role of The Phantom, a role which he had played in both The Phantom Of The Opera and Love Never Dies to perfection. With a gorgeous tenor baritone, incredible subtlety and high drama that can only be achieved through the magic of the filmed close up, it was a joy to see these performances as never before. It gave new dimensions to the scenes between the Phantom and Christine played on this occasion by Sierra Boggess. There was stage chemistry here, so important for that moment when Christine first unmasks the Phantom but then surprisingly out of compassion hands the mask back. Musical numbers including Music Of The Night and Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again right down the final lair scene were simply sublime.

Andrew Lloyd Webber Phantom Of the Opera

Combine these two with Hadley Fraser’s Raoul and you have the perfect love triangle, and watching All I Ask Of You through to the Phantom’s retort is pure musical theatre magic. It was wonderful to see  Barry James and Gareth Snook play Firmin and Andre, the two theatre managers who quickly realise that they are out of their depth. With Wendy Ferguson and Wynne Evans as Carlotta and Piangi, numbers like Prima Donna were a joy to behold.

The Shows Must Go On

There are wonderful moments in Gillian Lynne’s original staging reminiscent of Degas’ ballerinas that have been retained here, but it is the backstage workings of the Opera Populaire from Liz Robertson’s starchy Madame Giry to Nick Holder’s Joseph Buquet that make this production. Nothing has been spared and much love given to transferring this extraordinary musical to an extraordinary venue. Even the enlarged Corps de ballet and the addition of Sergei Polunin from the Royal Ballet made this an event that I hope many of you will have enjoyed as much as I did.

The special encores featuring Sarah Brightman and Phantom’s from around the world including Peter Joback, John Owen-Jones, Anthony Warlow, Colm Wilkinson, Michael Crawford and the original London cast were simply icing on the cake.

The Phantom of the Opera at The Royal Albert Hall – Review

April 17, 2020 Last updated: May 2, 2021 12:38 pm By Chris Omaweng

It was a highly memorable experience and this video recording of the event is an excellent way to relive it. I recall how unusually warm it was in London back in early October 2011: our ‘VIP Experience’ envelopes became makeshift fans (‘phans’, even?) – the Royal Albert Hall did not install an air cooling system until 2016 – and it was one of those pre-show receptions where my glass of wine was topped up repeatedly, and without me asking. There were nibbles galore, too, including tiny buns roughly in the shape of the Albert Hall, and they fed us and fed us (to slightly misquote a famous Welsh hymn) until we wanted no more. In the background, showtunes from a great many productions other than The Phantom of the Opera played through the speakers.

Sierra Boggess as Christine - Photo Credit Joan Marcus.

I even recall my irritation at a man in the row in front of me who felt it necessary to point out very loudly to his companion early on in proceedings proper, “ That’s the ‘GoCompare’ man! ”, referring to Wynne Evans, who played Piangi in this production but is indeed probably more famous for his role as Gio Compario in a series of insurance advertisements on national television. Anyway, this is the video recording that is on sale, held up by ushers, as the audience files out at the end of a performance at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s Haymarket, having replaced the 2004 film version that used to be plugged there, for patrons wanting to relive the magical experience all over again at their own leisure having just seen the glorious West End production.

The sound quality is noticeably of excellent quality in the recording – even better than it was sitting in the Hall that night: there is a history of sound issues that the Hall itself will freely admit to, and even answer questions about, should you ever avail yourself of the opportunity in the future of going on one of their Hall Tours. The scenery, even if largely achieved through projections, is brilliant, as is the massive chandelier that practically dominates the top of the stage. The camera work is to a high standard, capturing the closeups and the birds-eye views equally well. It is worth watching to the end, even after the final apt lyric, “ It’s over now, the music of the night! ” – I won’t spoil it, except to say that the encores (there is more than one) are an added bonus to an already thoroughly enjoyable night.

The Phantom of the Opera

I’ve said before that I prefer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita to his Phantom , mostly because the former has a far grittier storyline (in my view, anyway). That said, as Lin-Manuel Miranda famously put it, “ Love is love is love ”, and it is easy to see why Phantom continues to have such a broad and international appeal. The large cast’s voices are in fine form across the solos, duets and big ensemble numbers, all very much full of vibrancy and energy from beginning to end. The trepidation at the Phantom’s (Ramin Karimloo) presence, whether seen or unseen, is palpable, and an orchestra of forty-five is ably conducted by Anthony Inglis.

Whilst some theatrical productions have almost been swallowed up by the relative vastness of the Royal Albert Hall, this one is itself on a grand scale – note, for instance, ‘Masquerade’ at the beginning of the second half, as well as a ballet. Christine (Sierra Boggess) brings the house down with ‘Think of Me’, and then again with ‘Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again’. The hardcore fans are probably still debating the alteration of a lyric or two, and what happens (or doesn’t happen) to the chandelier, but this remains a magnificent and unforgettable celebration of an outstanding long-running musical.

In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, Cameron Mackintosh produced a unique, spectacular staging of the musical on a scale which had never been seen before. Inspired by the original staging by Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne, this lavish, fully-staged production set in the sumptuous Victorian splendour of London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall features a cast and orchestra of over 200, plus some very special guest appearances.

"The Phantom of the Opera," written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, premiered at the Majestic Theatre in New York City on January 26, 1988.

The musical is based on French author Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel of the same name.

In a statement to CBS , the musical's producer Cameron Mackintosh said "it has been an unparalleled honour to have presented the longest-running musical in Broadway's history," adding that the show is "legendary."

According to The Hollywood Reporter , the production struggled to bounce back after being forced to close during the coronavirus pandemic.

A message on the show's official website says that tickets are on sale for performances through January 22, 2023, with the final block of tickets going on sale "shortly."

Michael Crawford, who played the original Phantom in 1988, was all smiles during rehearsals for the Broadway opening.

Crawford originated the role of the Phantom in London's West End, which is known for its theater culture, before joining the Broadway cast, Playbill writes .

Andrew Lloyd Webber joined the cast onstage for a curtain call on January 9, 2006 —the same night the show surpassed "Cats" as the longest longest-running show in Broadway history.

The score for "Cats," which is currently the fourth longest-running show of all time, was also written by Lloyd Webber, according to Broadway's official website .

The same night, actors who played the musical's titular character joined together in costume for a performance.

An assembly of actresses who played the lead character Christine Daaé were also present, per Playbill , with both groups taking their bows onstage.

At the 25th anniversary of the production's Broadway premiere, Hugh Panaro and Sierra Boggess sang their hearts out as the Phantom and Christine.

Panaro is one of the few actors to play both the Phantom and Raoul in the Broadway production, the New York Theater Guide writes . He was cast as Christine's love interest Raoul in 1991 and invited to play the title role in 1999, a part he would play on and off until 2014.

In May 2014, Norm Lewis became the first Black actor to play the Phantom on Broadway (and only the third Black actor to take on the role worldwide).

Lewis, who took over for Panaro, told CBS Mornings in 2014 that it was emotional for him to step into the role.

" ... I feel very honored, and I hope that I make not only everyone who's involved proud, but hopefully this will open up a lot of doors for people of color."

Broadway's first Christine, Sarah Brightman, returned to the stage to celebrate the musical's 30th anniversary at the Majestic Theatre in 2018.

Lloyd Webber wrote "The Phantom of the Opera" during his marriage to Brightman, who originated the role on London's West End before continuing with the Broadway cast, per her website .

When "The Phantom of the Opera" re-opened in October 2021, the audience was given masks of their own to wear during the performance.

"New York loves the arts. New York loves Broadway. New York loves 'Phantom,'" New York Senator Schumer said in a pre-show address, per Variety . "We must never forget that the arts are a great economic engine for New York."

The show's most iconic prop, the chandelier, also returned to audiences in 2021. The glow from the large light illuminated the theater's intricate architecture.

Because the chandelier is a moving piece of the musical's set, its dramatic rise to the ceiling at the beginning of the show served as a symbol for the post-pandemic return of Broadway.

Emilie Kouatchou starred as the first Black Christine in the musical in 2022.

NBC reports that Kouatchou unsuccessfully auditioned for the production twice before getting cast as an understudy. She told the outlet in February that the rejection served a larger purpose in her journey.

"Honestly, this was the perfect time for something like this to happen, even though it had been quite a long time. There have been so many different Black women that could have played Christine," she said. "We're in a period of intense change in this industry, and I'm just happy that I could be a part of that change."

‘I wanted to make people feel like I’d just been made to feel’ … Ramin Karimloo as the Phantom in 2011

'The masks are in my attic!' Ramin Karimloo on The Phantom of the Opera

As the 25th-anniversary staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical is streamed online, its star tells stories of fandom and the Phantom

I’d wanted to play the Phantom since I was 12. I saw it on a school trip. I had been a typical small-town Canadian boy who played ice hockey. My life changed that day. I wanted to make people feel like I’d just been made to feel. Colm Wilkinson was extraordinary in the role – it was almost as if every note he sang would be his last. Because I came from such a small town, ignorance was bliss. If I told anyone that’s what I wanted to do, they’d say: “Cool, OK!” No one told you me how hard it would be.

The Phantom is unhinged. He kills people, he’s manipulative, but there’s something about him as an underdog. This is what society has created. How can you not have compassion or empathy for him?

I couldn’t get into the role when we were rehearsing. But putting the makeup and the mask on helped. Usually it’s good to work in a character’s shoes – with this part I needed the face and mask. I was in my attic the other day and found a bunch of them from Phantom and the sequel, Love Never Dies. I gave one of them to Nicole Scherzinger after we did the Royal Variety performance because she did such an extraordinary job. I said: “All right, you get a mask!”

The 25th-anniversary version of The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 2011

Whenever people start telling me stories about theatres being haunted, I walk away. I don’t need to know that! When I played the Phantom I was always the last to leave the building because of all that makeup I had to take off. My tough-guy attitude really disappeared when I was left alone.

I love working with Sierra Boggess, who plays Christine. We both love to perform but for the first two or three weeks of lockdown neither of us wanted to sing. I went into dad mode – are we healthy, is my family OK, have we got groceries? Once it became clear this would be our norm, I still wanted to sing. So we performed Once Upon Another Time from Love Never Dies together online.

I’m just as much a fan of the show as I am the Phantom. I grew up loving it and then I happened to be the Phantom for a moment in time and now I’m a fan again. It will be great to relive it with everyone. This is a crazy time. We are all at home looking for something to help us forget. It should be quite a special moment.

The Phantom of the Opera is free to watch from 7pm BST on Friday 17 April (for 24 hours for UK viewers and 48 hours in other territories) as part of The Shows Must Go On , a series offering a different Andrew Lloyd Webber musical each week.

The Princess of Wales’ 42 most fabulous looks on her 42nd birthday

As the Princess of Wales turns 42, Joe Bromley rounds up her 42 most dazzling dresses

Celebrations are in order as  Catherine, Princess of Wales  marks her 42nd birthday today, Tuesday January 9.

While the Princess will likely spend the day with close friends, family and her husband, Prince William, she would have no problem amping up the glamour should she see fit.

Over the past two decades she has stepped out in countless glamorous ball gowns, well proving that when faced with a formal occasion, she will rise to it with sophistication and not a little sparkle.

Such events range from London premieres — from the black lace Temperley London gown she wore to the 2012 War Horse premiere, to the unforgettable gold glitter bomb dress by Jenny Packham which ricocheted across the internet after the No Time To Die James Bond world premiere in 2021 — to Royal Variety Performances, State Banquets and galas at the National Portrait Gallery, where she has been a patron since 2012.

Over time, Catherine has developed a formula for such occasions which, predominantly relying on Packham as well as Alexander McQueen, designed by Sarah Burton. Last year saw Burton, who made the Princess’s 2011 wedding dress, l eave the house  — the question for 2024 will be whether or not the house will maintain its royal seal of approval.

It is not to say she shies away from a dramatic turn. Her most memorable looks have come thanks to shocks of colour, which in turn have dominated front pages — the shimmering, fuschia The Vampire’s Wife gown worn to a special reception hosted by the Governor General of Belize in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 was a highlight; so too was the neon green Solace London she wore to the Earthshot prize in Boston that same year.

2023 was a year of sartorial triumphs as well. From the black, bicep length opera gloves paired with a re-worn white, McQueen gown at the BAFTAs in February (genius), to the dazzling display she put on alongside Blackpink , in a cascading white Packham gown with  Paula Rowan white gloves, for the State Banquet held for Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife Kim Keon Hee.

Cheers to many more in her 42nd year…

Here are 42 of the Princess's most fabulous looks:
