Sailing used to be considered as a rather sedate pastime. But in the past few years, the world of yacht racing has been revolutionised by the arrival of hydrofoil-supported catamarans, known as “foilers”. These vessels, more akin to high-performance aircraft than yachts, combine the laws of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics to create vessels capable of speeds of up to 50 knots, which is far faster than the wind propelling them.

An F50 catamaran preparing for the Sail GP series recently even broke this barrier, reaching an incredible speed of 50.22 knots (57.8mph) purely powered by the wind. This was achieved in a wind of just 19.3 knots (22.2mph). F50s are 15-metre-long, 8.8-metre-wide hydrofoil catamarans propelled by rigid sails and capable of such astounding speeds that Sail GP has been called the “ Formula One of sailing ”. How are these yachts able to go so fast? The answer lies in some simple fluid dynamics.

As a vessel’s hull moves through the water, there are two primary physical mechanisms that create drag and slow the vessel down. To build a faster boat you have to find ways to overcome the drag force.

The first mechanism is friction. As the water flows past the hull, a microscopic layer of water is effectively attached to the hull and is pulled along with the yacht. A second layer of water then attaches to the first layer, and the sliding or shearing between them creates friction.

On the outside of this is a third layer, which slides over the inner layers creating more friction, and so on. Together, these layers are known as the boundary layer – and it’s the shearing of the boundary layer’s molecules against each other that creates frictional drag.

grand prix 26 sailboat

A yacht also makes waves as it pushes the water around and under the hull from the bow (front) to the stern (back) of the boat. The waves form two distinctive patterns around the yacht (one at each end), known as Kelvin Wave patterns.

These waves, which move at the same speed as the yacht, are very energetic. This creates drag on the boat known as the wave-making drag, which is responsible for around 90% of the total drag. As the yacht accelerates to faster speeds (close to the “hull speed”, explained later), these waves get higher and longer.

These two effects combine to produce a phenomenon known as “ hull speed ”, which is the fastest the boat can travel – and in conventional single-hull yachts it is very slow. A single-hull yacht of the same size as the F50 has a hull speed of around 12 mph.

However, it’s possible to reduce both the frictional and wave-making drag and overcome this hull-speed limit by building a yacht with hydrofoils . Hydrofoils are small, underwater wings. These act in the same way as an aircraft wing, creating a lift force which acts against gravity, lifting our yacht upwards so that the hull is clear of the water.

grand prix 26 sailboat

While an aircraft’s wings are very large, the high density of water compared to air means that we only need very small hydrofoils to produce a lot of the important lift force. A hydrofoil just the size of three A3 sheets of paper, when moving at just 10 mph, can produce enough lift to pick up a large person.

This significantly reduces the surface area and the volume of the boat that is underwater, which cuts the frictional drag and the wave-making drag, respectively. The combined effect is a reduction in the overall drag to a fraction of its original amount, so that the yacht is capable of sailing much faster than it could without hydrofoils.

The other innovation that helps boost the speed of racing yachts is the use of rigid sails . The power available from traditional sails to drive the boat forward is relatively small, limited by the fact that the sail’s forces have to act in equilibrium with a range of other forces, and that fabric sails do not make an ideal shape for creating power. Rigid sails, which are very similar in design to an aircraft wing, form a much more efficient shape than traditional sails, effectively giving the yacht a larger engine and more power.

As the yacht accelerates from the driving force of these sails, it experiences what is known as “ apparent wind ”. Imagine a completely calm day, with no wind. As you walk, you experience a breeze in your face at the same speed that you are walking. If there was a wind blowing too, you would feel a mixture of the real (or “true” wind) and the breeze you have generated.

The two together form the apparent wind, which can be faster than the true wind. If there is enough true wind combined with this apparent wind, then significant force and power can be generated from the sail to propel the yacht, so it can easily sail faster than the wind speed itself.

grand prix 26 sailboat

The combined effect of reducing the drag and increasing the driving power results in a yacht that is far faster than those of even a few years ago. But all of this would not be possible without one further advance: materials. In order to be able to “fly”, the yacht must have a low mass, and the hydrofoil itself must be very strong. To achieve the required mass, strength and rigidity using traditional boat-building materials such as wood or aluminium would be very difficult.

This is where modern advanced composite materials such as carbon fibre come in. Production techniques optimising weight, rigidity and strength allow the production of structures that are strong and light enough to produce incredible yachts like the F50.

The engineers who design these high-performance boats (known as naval architects ) are always looking to use new materials and science to get an optimum design. In theory, the F50 should be able to go even faster.

Sarasota Races Moving To September In 2024 Powerboat P1/P1 Offshore Schedule

In a departure from its longtime July 4 holiday weekend scheduling dates, the Powerboat P1 / P1 Offshore -produced Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix is slated for September 13-15. The news was announced in a press release announcing the United Kingdom-based organization’s 2024 offshore racing schedule this morning.

The Sarasota, Fla., event, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, is the third of four stops in the 2024 Union Internationale Motonautique Class 1 World Championship Series and the fifth of seven races presently on the 2024 American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series roster.

As it did in 2023, the 2024 UIM Class 1 World Championship Series will kick off May 16-19 in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Powerboat P1/P1 Offshore will again collaborate with local Thunder On Cocoa Beach organizer Kerry Bartlett and his team to produce the event, which will celebrate its 15th anniversary this year.

From there, the Class 1 series will move to Sheboygan, Wis., for the second-year Midwest Challenge. Set for August 9-11, the inaugural event celebrated the 50th anniversary of Mercury Racing in Fond du Lac, Wis. The mid-September event in Sarasota event will follow.

The Class 1 series will conclude with the St. Petersburg Grand Prix, another Sunshine State event, October 18-20. That date, too, has been pushed back as the 2023 series-ending event happened in early September.

According to a Powerboat P1 press release issued this morning, the organization is expecting seven Class 1 teams to compete this season.

“Our goal is to have a fleet of 12 boats by 2025,” said Azam Rangoonwala, the chief executive officer of Powerboat P1, in the release. “We want to grow the world championship commercially and promote the series both in the United States and internationally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, host venues, sponsors and partners.”

The APBA has processed seven sanctions so far for offshore races this season.

The current official APBA Offshore National Championship Series schedule for the Spec classes—Super Cat, Super Stock and Mod V—and Bracket classes is as follows:

April 27-28 , 7 Mile Grand Prix, Marathon, Fla.— Race World Offshore May 16-19 , Thunder On Cocoa Beach, Cocoa Beach, Fla.—Powerboat P1 June 7-9 , Ocean City Grand Prix, Ocean City, Md.—Race World Offshore August 9-11 , Midwest Challenge, Sheboygan, Wis.—Powerboat P1 September 13-15 , Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, Sarasota, Fla.—Powerboat P1 September 27-29, XINSURANCE Clearwater Nationals—Race World Offshore October 18-20 , St. Pete Grand Prix, St. Petersburg, Fla.—Powerboat P1

Long an early summer staple, the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix is moving to September.

As they have in years past, the Super Cat and Super Stock owner-groups will have their own internal national championship schedules. Both groups plan to finalized those schedules this week and speedonthewater.com will report them as they become available.

SailGP returns to NYC: What to know about the weekend sailing competition

NEW YORK CITY - Sail Grand Prix is back in NYC for the first time in five years and on Thursday, the teams were able to test the waters launching from Jersey City ahead of a busy race weekend.

"This is totally different from anything you've ever seen before," says Team USA flight controller, Mac Agnese. "The boats are superfast. They're really cool to watch and the closer you get, you see how loud they are. So, it's kind of like a Formula 1 car."

"It’s high-adrenaline sailing for sure," adds Team USA grinder Alex Sinclair. "The boats are incredible. They fly really high and especially with the nice flat water that we have here in front of Manhattan, we should be getting really high. Hopefully not too many spills, but at times we tend to have some action shots."

SailGP top speed

The entire SailGP flight comprises the F50 Catamaran, boats that can reach over 60 miles per hour – so they literally fly above the water.

"It's kind of what keeps it exciting though," says Agnese, a member of the 2019 team. "There will be crashes. That's part of the game."

"It has a great feel being in New York compared to the other events." Alex Sinclair

The league is in its 4th season now with 10 national teams racing around the globe at breathtaking speeds and views, like the Statue of Liberty, as the event comes this weekend to Governor’s Island.

"It has a great feel being in New York compared to the other events," says Sinclair. "Just with the skyline right there, Manhattan right there, and then this huge grandstand on Governor's Island. So we're very excited."

One of the six original SailGP teams to kick off the league, a diverse private ownership group acquired the United States that boosts of actress Issa Rae and Titans star wideout DeAndre Hopkins – midway through Season 4. Seven-time world champion sailor Taylor Canfield drives the team.

SailGP tickets

Tickets are still available for Saturday and Sunday.

With so much happening during this major sporting event, it can be difficult to keep tabs o n all there is to enjoy. Here' s a handy guide on everything you need to know about SailG P .

What is SailGP?

SailGP is the world’s most exciting racing on water. The global championship features national teams battling in short, intense races at iconic stadium-style venues across the globe. The high-tech, high-speed action features sailing’s best athletes racing in identical hydrofoiling F50 catamarans, flying at speeds approaching 100 km/h.

How does it work?

The SailGP Championship is made up of a packed calendar of events taking place at iconic venues around the world. Ten rival national teams go head-to-head for Championship glory, competing at fast and furious events across multiple continents.

Events are made up of multiple races and take place across two days, with 6 races in total scheduled for each Sail Grand Prix. These fleet races are intense and adrenaline-fueled lasting approximately 15 minutes each.

The ROCKWOOL Canada Sail Grand Prix will be the 11th stop on Season 4’s record-breaking 13-event calendar, which means teams will be putting it all on the line to move up the season leaderboard in the run up to San Francisco’s Grand Final.

Each event has 5 fleet races (3 on Saturday, 2 on Sunday) and one final race (on Sunday).

When and where is SailGP happening?

SailGP race days are happening on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, 2024 . The heart-pumping action takes place right in the center of the Halifax Harbour, between Georges Island and the Macdonald Bridge. The races will be visible from both the Halifax waterfront and  Dartmouth waterfront , with plenty of space to catch all the action. This is the first SailGP event to take place in Canadian waters, and  fans will be able to take in the race and festivities at multiple venues across the city.

The address for entrance to the Race Stadium is 1521 Lower Water Street, Halifax, NS, B3J 1R9.

What times will the races happen?

Race Day 1 | Saturday, June 1 SailGP Race Stadium | 3:00pm-6:30pm ADT Race Times | 4:00pm-5:30pm ADT

Race Day 2 | Sunday, June 2 SailGP Race Stadium | 3:00pm-6:30pm ADT Race Times | 4:00pm-5:30pm ADT

Will I need tickets to see the races?

Tickets are not required to see the races – since the races will be taking place in the Halifax Harbour, there will be plenty of viewing opportunities along the Halifax and Dartmouth waterfronts, as shown on the map below. Both waterfronts are lined with patios – consider reserving a table at one to catch a great view of the action.

Dartmouth waterfront:

There will be a family-friendly fun zone and viewing area in Ferry Terminal Park for both race days with a giant video wall that will carry the live broadcast to follow along with all of the excitement, a Kiwanis community fundraising BBQ will be available, and live music from DJ Douvet that will keep the party going between races.

Alderney Landing will have a 19+ Splashzone with additional viewing screens that will carry the broadcast and commentary. On June 1-2 from 2-6:30 pm, the events plaza will feature an exciting boardwalk bar and on-site food trucks, Pop Up Cinema and Mr. Smooth while DJ Magic Mic gets the crowd cheering for the home team. Inside, people can visit the Craig Gallery for a special sailboat decorating art cart as well.

What should I wear to the races?

There is no official dress code for SailGP events, but since this is an outdoor event, it’s recommended you prepare for the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Bring a hat, high SPF sunscreen, and drink plenty of water if sunny weather is in the forecast. Halifax can be known to have unpredictable weather in June, with temperatures ranging anywhere from 10°C to 25°C. Be sure to pack a raincoat and warmer layers if rain is looking more likely.

NOTE: large umbrellas are not permitted, as this will disrupt the view for other fans.

What else can I experience during SailGP?

Aside from the races, there are plenty of ways to enjoy all that SailGP has to offer. Enjoy live entertainment on the waterfront, including live feed viewing on a large screen at Queen’s Marque, a SailGP Fan Shop, and other fun activities along the Halifax waterfront. The famed Bluenose II schooner and HMCS Oriole will be resting in port at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and will be open for deck tours.

Welcome to Halifax

land acknwoledgement logo

Halifax is in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. The people of the Mi’kmaw Nation have lived on this territory for millennia, and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land.  Historically, a land acknowledgment is a traditional practice shared amongst Indigenous groups to recognize the Indigenous land and territory they are visiting. Today a land acknowledgement remains a way to express one’s gratitude to the Indigenous people for being stewards of the land that we live and work on.

SailGP not returning to Halifax next year, Sail N.S. hopeful for 2026

Despite success of the international sailing competition in june, halifax will not host event in 2025.

Social Sharing

SailGP has confirmed Halifax will not be used as a venue next year, despite the record-breaking success of the international sailing competition's Canadian debut last month in the city's harbour.

A news release from Sail Nova Scotia said Rockwool Canada Sail Grand Prix, or SailGP, has received "unprecedented demand from host cities" and that "it unfortunately wasn't possible to confirm Halifax as a Season 5 venue."

Sail Nova Scotia, which served as the event's host organization, has set its sights on 2026, when it hopes the competition will return to the province. Although SailGP signed a three-year agreement with Sail Nova Scotia for three years of races in Halifax, the international event is not obligated to return.

"Halifax will always be SailGP's first Canadian home port," Sarah Flanagan, president of Sail Nova Scotia, said in the release .

"Our incredible team of volunteers worked together with community partners and SailGP to stage an unforgettable experience for our city, one that we are committed to expand on in 2026."

Spectators watch a SailGP boat pass by.

Jen Hall, team manager for Canada SailGP, said while the news is disappointing for the team and fans, it's not totally unexpected given the demand from host cities and new teams entering the league.

She said uncertainty around ownership of the Canadian team also played a part.

"I just think the league wasn't in a position to confirm another event in Canada when we weren't 100 per cent sure that the Canadian team will be on the start line at the beginning of Season 5," Hall told CBC Radio's Information Morning Halifax .

Hall said the Canadian team has been up for sale "for a little while," and there's already been some interest.

grand prix 26 sailboat

The Canadian team is currently one of five teams owned by the league. Hall said three teams — Canada, France and Spain — were notified last week that new teams would be coming into the league, and one of the three would be bumped from the next season.

"So we've all been scurrying," Hall said. "I guess that's really a commercial race that we're all in to try and secure ownership, so that we can be sure that we are on the start line when Season 5 gets underway in Dubai in November."

Hall said she'd like to have answers about ownership by October.

Halifax event was success

The competition during the first weekend in June in Halifax had the fastest ticket sellout in SailGP's history and saw more than 50,000 spectators gather on both sides of the harbour to watch two days of high-speed sailboat racing. The competition prompted the temporary shutdown of marine and air traffic.

Sail Nova Scotia's release said local hotels reported a 25 per cent increase in room bookings over the previous year. It added that 53 per cent of ticket holders were from outside Halifax.

  • After making its first splash in Halifax, will SailGP come back?

A full economic analysis is expected in the coming weeks, but the release said Season 4 of SailGP events contributed an average of $18.9 million US, or $25.8 million Cdn, in regional economic impact.

SailGP's chief operating officer, Julien di Biase, said in the release the competition could set sail again in Halifax.

"SailGP continues to work with its partners in Halifax and is optimistic about a potential return to the city in the future," said di Biase. "The incredible welcome the league and the teams received in Halifax was second to none."

6-year-old helps others after dying in crash

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WTVY/Gray News) - Rylan Michelle Cobb, 6, was rushed 200 miles to a children’s hospital in Birmingham after a car crash Saturday amid dismal hopes for survival.

The same collision killed the little girl’s mother and left her father critically injured.

Rylan died Tuesday morning, WTVY reports .

Family members decided to donate her organs, saying it’s what Rylan would have wanted.

“Other families were in the same boat as us, sitting there praying for their kid to get a heart, lung or liver. She got to be their miracle,” Rylan’s grandfather Larry Batchelor said after a ceremony honoring the 6-year-old.

Rylan was riding in a pickup truck Saturday night with her parents, 26-year-old Tiffany Cobb and Wesley Ty Cobb, and her two younger siblings as they traveled south from Slocomb.

Just before reaching the Florida line, their truck collided with another pickup along State Route 167 in Geneva County.

While Rylan’s family now only has memories to cling to, they have found comfort in knowing she helped others in desperate need of transplants.

“She gets to live on. I know that Rylan is out there in over 100 places, and it’ll build and grow. She’ll be all over the world. That was the only comfort I had,” Paula Peel, Rylan’s grandmother, said.

According to Legacy of Hope , more than 113,000 men, women and children in the United States are on the organ transplant waiting list. Nearly 2,000 of those are waiting in Alabama.

There may be a few less now because of Rylan.

Legacy of Hope provides a portal for those wanting to become donors and provides answers to frequently asked questions.
