Excellent Food and service, great location! We returned here after quite a while, and must say that Pier33 is a gem, offering a divine dining experience with its excellent food, friendly service, and stunning Mooloolaba Marina views. The Slow Cook Lamb Shoulder we sampled was heavenly. The tender meat melted in our mouths, highlighting the chef's precision in slow-cooking. Equally outstanding was the Four Cheese Gnocchi – a cloud-like culinary delight. The rich, creamy blend of cheeses was the perfect companion to the delicate gnocchi. Enhancing our experience were the attentive and warm staff. They were helpful and enthusiastic without being intrusive, contributing significantly to our enjoyable evening. In short, Pier33 exceeded our expectations. With its exceptional food, good service, and ambiance, it's a must-visit culinary destination in Mooloolaba. We will be back and encourage others to sample the wonderful offerings of this excellent establishment.

Dining out just got enjoyable again! From the moment we arrived this restaurant ticked all the boxes.. the view, so refreshing, boats, yachts happily moored providing a wonderful backdrop to what was going to be an epicurean delight! Interesting food sourced locally & from the hinterland. Flavours that were amazing. A chef that excelled at seafood preparation..omg so good but wait the wines were superb too. And then there's dessert because let's be honest I love pavlova xx So yes I'll be back & can't wait to taste what's new!

Sunset Dining at it's best Pier 33 is one of those places where you really can just settle in, relax and let yourself be taken care of. From the indulgent share plates, to the extremely delicious cocktails, it's a restaurant that the Sunshine Coast has been begging for. It's something you would expect from Sydney, so switch out the harbour views for the Mooloolaba Marina and you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Pier33-IndulgeMagazine-www.indulgemagazine.net

Pier 33 has arrived at Mooloolaba Marina, offering sublime waterside dining in a minimalist, wide-open space. With its classic seaside theme of blue and white, with aquarian flourishes, and a view that stretches out across the Mooloolaba Marina, the space conjures a relaxed vibe.

Located on the site of the Old Yacht Club, the Pier 33 bistro is breathing life back into the Marina. And life it has created, with the option of casual, long tables right on the water, seating alongside a grassed area under the umbrellas, or in bean-bag comfort for more relaxed, family-styled dining experience.

The formal dining room is fabulously spacious, and the shining jewel of the venue is its open bar, oval in shape and a hive of activity, basking in mosaic blue tiled light. It is the kind of bar at which you can drink casually but still obtain the most lavish of drinks.

The food menu entices with an array of selections from the sea, and after some deliberation I choose the Mooloolaba king prawn, spanner crab roll and the eye fillet steak from Toowoomba.

In keeping with the trend for provisioning as close to location as possible, head chef and former senior sous-chef at Sydney’s Republic Dining Simon Taylor sources his seafood directly from Sunshine Coast suppliers.

With roots in fresh seafood, Taylor’s impressive gastro-resume includes stints at Sydney’s Flying Fish, Jaquest Reymond in Melbourne and, closer to home, Two Small Rooms in Toowong.

The spanner crab roll was an entrée highlight, served on a brioche bun with kewpie and tobiko sauce, and the Mooloolaba king prawn was perfectly complemented with a fascinating seaweed butter.

A delightful surprise was the crispy fish wings, a contemporary presentation with a briny nod to a classic nibble, accompanied with a creamy aioli and a wedge of lemon. Needless to say, I was eagerly anticipating the mains.

The tender, juicy eye fillet was cooked to perfection, standing toe-to-toe with the aromatic beef jus.

To accompany the beautiful main, I selected the baby cos and buttermilk salad, and the pumpkin, coffee and burnt butter sides.

A flavoursome journey of sweet, savoury, bitter and just good, old-fashioned tastiness granted my tastebuds an overall feeling of ‘fresh’ cuisine.

Finishing on a lemon tart that offered a citrusy zing with vanilla bean cream, my palate felt cleansed.

This seaside gem is a delightful addition to the Sunshine Coast dining scene, providing a top and tail experience with its Gold Coast counterpart already a favourite amongst foodies.

With a shining new star at the Mooloolaba Marina, I cannot wait to see what else these operators plan to reel in.

16 of the best Mooloolaba restaurants

Kristie Lau-Adams

Travel Journalist

31 May 2024

Time

Get a taste of the Sunshine Coast’s freshest seafood and inventive produce-driven dishes at our favourite Mooloolaba restaurants.

There’s only one non-negotiable in Mooloolaba — washing a famed Mooloolaba prawn down with its heavenly saltwater comrades. From rich Italian and Mediterranean flavours to the king-hit spices of Asia, enriching the region’s best seafood through innovative techniques is a Mooloolaba restaurant prerequisite. Here, we gather the suburb’s seafood stars along with a handful of local players doing excellent work with land-bred produce.

1. Pavilion Mooloolaba

Toast your beach holiday with killer cocktails and Instagram-friendly share plates at Pavilion Mooloolaba . Climbing the stairs to level one where ocean views abound, you’re smacked with the venue’s calming coastal fit-out, all timbers and marble and 50 shades of white, while a Mediterranean-inspired menu features small and large plates, platters and pizzas.

Mediterranean-inspired share plates are the order of the day at Pavilion Mooloolaba. (Image: Tourism and Events Queensland)

Unsurprisingly, this Mooloolaba restaurant draws a glamorous crowd especially when the party kicks into gear come nightfall. Tropical tipples are devoured over dishes including Mooloolaba prawn sliders, forest mushroom arancini, a standout crispy barramundi, grass-fed eye fillet and 48-hour fermented sourdough pizzas.

Address:  26/121 Mooloolaba Esplanade, Mooloolaba

2. Bella Venezia

Handmade pasta, local seafood and authentic Italian flavours – Bella Venezia is a must-dine Mooloolaba restaurant every time you’re in town. It flows out onto the Esplanade, so you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a tourist trap, however perfectly balanced, generously prepared dishes including a Moreton Bay Bug Tail spaghetti and a slow-cooked beef cheek ragout pappardelle, make this place exceptional.

Salmon on the menu at Bella Venezia

Bella Venezia serves up exceptional Italian fare.

The vibe is traditionally Italian – rowdy, wine-fuelled and fun – so long lunching and languishing dinners are encouraged. Additionally, the wine list collates more than 400 drops, expertly selected from the world’s finest wine regions and vintages, to help keep the good times rolling.

Address: 95 Mooloolaba Esplanade, Mooloolaba

Live the high life at Pier 33 , located within the former Mooloolaba Yacht Club and smack-bang in front of Mooloolaba Marina. The waterfront restaurant is dressed in Hamptons-inspired flair (think wall-mounted oars and a solid blue-and-white colour scheme), while its contemporary menu is split into four sections to showcase the diversity of local seafood. Highlights include the Raw & Cold menu’s Mooloolaba yellowfish tuna tartare, the Smalls menu’s Mooloolaba prawn roll, the Main menu’s lasagne with seafood marinara and the Share menu’s seafood platter with a sizeable haul of just-caught delicacies.

Address:  33-45 Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba

4. Fish on Parkyn

There’s plenty more to experience along this well-trodden strip, which runs east along Mooloolaba Beach past The Surf Club Mooloolaba. Fish on Parkyn  is another great seafood-obsessed Mooloolaba restaurant, attracting long-adoring regulars for its ‘dock to table’ food philosophy.

Seafood chowder, pan-seared scallops, a flavour-packed seafood curry and a Moreton Bay bug linguine are standouts and there’s also a separate vegetarian menu and kid’s menu to explore.

Address:  25 Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba

5. Spice Bar

Step inside the dark and moody Spice Bar to get your fill of the knockout flavours of Asia. Choose from a five, seven or nine-course degustation, two banquet menus (one with dessert and one without) or dishes off the a la carte menu to be transported to the streets of Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam and beyond.

Settle in for a degustation or banquet experience at Spice Bar.

Despite its theatrical fit out, the atmosphere is light and breezy as standout dishes including the duck swimming in five-spice plum jus and the spatchcock done with a blend of chilli, ginger and lemongrass, fill the space with mouth-watering aromas.

Address:  123 Mooloolaba Esplanade, Mooloolaba

6. The Dock Mooloolaba

Located within The Wharf, The Dock Mooloolaba  sits right on the water offering million-dollar views, however the vibe remains cool and casual.

Customers gather at The Dock in Mooloolaba

The vibe is relaxed at this Mooloolaba favourite.

There are usually 16 different beers on tap plus a consistent selection of stellar cocktails but everyone’s here for a quality feed and it’s not hard to see why.

Starters span fried calamari, a Fijian-style ceviche mixing up local reef fish, plus delicious king oyster mushroom skewers. Mains include a spanner crab linguine, pan-fried snapper, wagyu beef burger and a pale ale-bettered red emperor with chips.

7. See Restaurant

While you’re exploring The Wharf, don’t miss See Restaurant  where your table is set over the water, so it feels as though you’re on a boat. The must-order is the ‘BBQ Seafood Tasting Plate’ stacked with king prawns, scallops, Moreton Bay bugs, raw salmon and calamari, but the entire menu utilises super fresh seafood and seasonal ingredients. They even do oyster shooters, a dreamy accompaniment to relaxed dining while out at sea.

8. Rice Boi

Asian street food is nailed at Rice Boi , a buzzing Mooloolaba restaurant located within The Wharf precinct. The interior mirrors the energy of a traditional night noodle market, complete with red lanterns and neon lights, and the dishes are piled with fresh herbs and spices so brace yourself for serious flavour bombs.

Plus, there are water views if you can grab a table at the rear of the restaurant known as the ‘beer garden’. Standout dishes include every one of their bao buns (the duck is especially yummy), plus the sticky char sui pork, katsu curry fries, barbecue ocean trout in banana leaves and beef carpaccio done Japanese style.

9. RB Dining

Sophisticated Asian dining is perfected at RB Dining , the Rice Boi team’s refined older sibling. But while subdued lighting and sleek minimalistic décor polish up the atmosphere, the team continues to nail their trademark flavour overload.

Subdued lighting and a sleek fit-out make for a refined night out at RB Dining.

Share snacks include the beef and betel leaf, prawn toast, pork wontons and pork belly miang before you’ll move onto the raw bar or mains that span a red duck curry, a 10-hour coconut beef short rib curry and fabulous barbecue chicken.

The prawn toast is a must-try.

10. Backlane

Whether you’re drawn to Backlane ’s ‘From The Land’ or ‘From The Sea’ menu, tapas inspired by international street food is delivered with total flair. A vibrant venue filled with loud conversation, Backlane also dishes up cocktails and great beer and wine so there’s plenty to get excited about. On the ‘Land’ menu, you’ll find pork belly tacos, Karaage chicken, lamb koftas, chicken skewers and more, while there’s seafood saganaki, prawn and ginger dumplings, fish tacos and more floating around the ‘Sea’ menu.

Address:  Shop 7, 19 First Avenue, Mooloolaba

11. Ton Khao Bistro

Feed your Thai craving at Ton Khao Bistro , Mooloolaba’s go-to for authentic Thai classics, making magic with seasonal produce and fresh herbs. The vibe is casual and understated, allowing the food to take centre stage. You’ll find all your usual players including cashew nut and basil and chilli stir-fries plus scene stealers like the yellow curry with Moreton Bay bug, a ‘Beach to Bush’ deep-fried whole barramundi and a spicy roasted duck with beans.

Address:  19 First Avenue, Mooloolaba

12. Nouc Cham

Blending Asian street food with the Sunshine Coast’s outstanding seafood supply, Nouc Cham  is an elegant Mooloolaba restaurant lifting the bar on Vietnamese cuisine. The interior is cosy with plenty of timber finishes while the food is illuminated with finesse and flavour. Choose from small plates including soft shell crab rice paper rolls, grilled XO scallops and grilled beef in betel leaves before launching into the main menu where a sizzling beef sirloin, roast duck, twice-cooked pork belly and several curries are dished up with love.

13. Il Vento

Take advantage of Il Vento ’s woodfired oven, cranking out pillowy-soft red and white-based pizzas, as you sip on drinks overlooking the Mooloolaba Marina. This lovely Mooloolaba restaurant is located within The Wharf precinct, so the views are as magical as the carbs on offer.

Eleven heavenly places to eat and drink in Mooloolaba

Eleven heavenly places to eat and drink in Mooloolaba

From your early morning coffee to sunset drinks and some of the best seafood in Australia... join us to explore Mooloolaba's thriving food and drink scene.

Whether you’re at the bustling Wharf precinct or the cruisy beachside esplanade, there's plenty of choices for a casual meal or a local brew, so make sure to add these eateries to your bucket list next time you're in town!

Let your tastebuds delight at Rice Boi

Rice Boi (at The Wharf), Mooloolaba

Rice Boi (at The Wharf), Mooloolaba

Rice Boi is THE spot to be for modern Asian street food style on the Sunshine Coast right now.

Think Japanese Izakaya dive bar meets grunge hangout, with an open plan fit-out right by the water, and delectable dishes designed for sharing banquet style.

Go here (ASAP!) for mouth-watering dumplings, super soft bao, flavour-packed curries and whatever frothy takes your fancy. Fresh, local, buzzing – Rice Boi is an absolute must-try.

Pull up a pew at Pier 33

Pier 33

Sunsets at Pier 33 are hard to beat. With the restaurant perched on the edge of the Mooloolaba Marina, pull up a chair on the back terrace overlooking the sea with swaying palms and bobbing yachts and boats before you.

The menu is what you’d expect here: fresh, locally sourced seafood and local, sustainably sourced produce with a modern, eclectic menu.

It’s the perfect place for lazy long lunches on the deck or a sunset snacking with a refreshing Mooloolaba Mools house cocktail (Gin, Matcha Powder, Fresh Mint and lime, and Freeze Dried Raspberries).

Watch the boats sail by at The Dock

Grab your beer paddle from some 52 taps(!), your menu and settle in for a sunset session of boat watching as the locals take their yachts, tinnies and kayaks back into moor for the night.

At The Dock fresh, seasonal and local ingredients are the driving forces for Executive Chef Chris Sell who’s determined to rock you with delectable dishes like Seared Hokkaido Scallops, or a wood-roasted eggplant with whipped hummus.

Discover flavour paradise at Spice Bar Mooloolaba

 Spice Bar, Mooloolaba

Spice Bar, Mooloolaba

Spice Bar is a flavour-packed institution serving up ornate Japanese delicacies from its modern-meets-traditional décor with spectacular views overlooking Mooloolaba Beach.

Considering they have a dedicated saké menu, including a ‘flight’ of saké (to sample all four on offer), it's hard to see how you could go wrong here.

With dishes and sides designed for degustation style sharing, this is the place to try something new, or something ‘out there’. Whether it’s tiger prawns in a tamarind broth, or black-tea-cured duck breast, your senses are going to be on hyperdrive here. Live the dream and book in.

Toast the week at Mooloolaba Surf Club

Mooloolaba Surf Club

Mooloolaba Surf Club

Nothing says coast life like a local surf club and The Surf Club Mooloolaba has nailed the most quintessential spot, smack bang on the beach.

Five o’clock on Friday is happy hour in Queensland and the Surf Club is the spot to be for a coldie to wrap up the week or a decent feed after a big surf, swim, or ride around Mooloolaba.

With typical Aussie pub fare, the all-day menu won’t let you down with classics like chicken parmie, steaks and burgers, and for some lighter options, why not try the poke bowl or a loaded watermelon salad.

Make your way to Mooloolaba Pavilion

Pavilion Mooloolaba

Pavilion Mooloolaba

Step through the magical archway, take a seat and enjoy breathtaking views of Mooloolaba beach. Here is an ideal spot to round up your mates and celebrate, sip and share, as well as stop by for brekkie’s and brunches. Green bowls, eggs your way and oh so good buttermilk pancakes are hitting the spot big time with punters, so book ahead.

At nights the place is packed to the max for Pav’s infamous pizzas, using 72-hour fermented bases. Let the sumptuous flavours like gorgonzola, black summer truffle, mushies and smoked scarmoza on the Tartufo pizza take you to new levels of culinary perfection.

Sit on the beach with fish and chips from The Spit

Nothing beats unfolding brown wrapping paper to reveal piles of steaming battered fish and chips. Whether a ‘Pack for 2’ of crumbed Cod with prawns, calamari and chips is your thing or a big ol’ style burger dripping with beetroot is more your bag, any line up is worth it at Fisheries on the Spit for old school fish and chips you can eat right on the beach.

Boston Shaker Bar

Boston Shaker Bar

Classy, stylish and sophisticated. That’s what the Boston Shaker Bar oozes by the truckload.

From its lush, red-velvet-clad bar to the intricate warm lighting and classic retro glassware, this cocktail bar will transport you to another era where conversation was God and music was too.

Amid all the beach-style pubs of the coast, the Boston Shaker is in a league of its own bringing a touch of 1920s art deco elegance and European style table service to the region.

Here you can soak up the vibes of a bygone era and try some of the cocktail classics like an Aphrodisiac or whatever floats your feather boa!

Satisfy your cravings at Backlane Tapas and Bar

With a street food inspired fusion menu, Backlane Bar and Street Food offers a range of share plates like fish tacos, karaage chicken and corn ribs, plus the perfect nibbles for a knock off drink or two.

Enjoy the relaxed and energetic vibes here as you share space with other punters on long tables.

You can even satisfy late night cravings with a sweet selection of tasty supper options, available until late.

Blackflag Brewing

 Blackflag Brewery Mooloolaba Bar

Blackflag Brewery Mooloolaba Bar

Blackflag Brewing is the kind of secret spot you stumble on down a back alley and think you’ve struck frothy gold.

With massive graffiti murals lining the walls inside and out, a jungle of indoor plants and even some swings, the vibe here is an eccentric mix of skater meets surfer, with a twist of messy boho. The floors are sandy and the brews are top notch.

Tapping into the grunge era of the 90s, here you can unwind with brews like their ‘RAGE’ pale ale or have a go at the ‘Old School Cool’ draught and feel pretty relieved you found this gem of a place. Cheers to good times!

Get your daily fix at The Old Bean

If you love people watching as much as we do, the Old Bean Espresso Bar on the Esplanade is like an old pier winding out to sea while people walk up and down her planks for generations.

Take a front row seat here and watch the world whirr by as you get your morning dose sorted by the latte-art making baristas of the Old Bean. Your morning latte will be crafted to perfection so that all you have to do is sit, sip and soak up the beachgoers, holiday makers, and local faces that move through its doors.

Keen to venture off the Esplanade? Try the Velo Project for epic breakfasts and teas in a place that’s mastered the relaxed, hotchpotch vibe, hidden in the burbs of Mooloolaba. Here you can play scrabble around the big table with total strangers and no one will bat an eyelid. We dig it!
