Why Jim Jarmusch’s “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai” Endures as an Unlikely Classic

An unconventional leading man. a revolutionary score. a cross-cultural triumph..

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (IMDB)

All filmmakers reflect the world around them, but few have captured the zeitgeist like director Jim Jarmusch, a soft-spoken New York transplant from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, with the philosophy, “Life has no plot, why must films or fiction?”

The cult hero status accrued by Jarmusch is born from his keen social observations, even when it’s sometimes difficult to decipher what he’s trying to say. That’s particularly true of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999), his urban samurai mob movie classic, which plays at the Hollywood Theatre on Feb. 25.

A film that fascinated movie fans by viewing subcultures through a surreal lens, Ghost Dog ’s seemingly accidental success is arguably due to its groundbreaking score (by RZA) and leading man (Forest Whitaker). “You see, I start with actors that I want to make a character for,” Jarmusch said in a 2011 interview with Louder Than War. “I don’t know what the story is or where it’s going at all. I just sort of jump in and start. In fact, I think I do it backwards.”

Ghost Dog was the product of a chance encounter between Whitaker and Jarmusch at a Super 8 camera store. And Jarmusch didn’t just hire an actor most filmmakers would have scoffed at for such a role: He specifically made the role for him.

Together, the pair concocted a character we’re compelled to root for despite the moral ambiguity and brutality of his job. A hit man with a samurai’s code, the protagonist known only as “Ghost Dog” has a sense of purpose that’s somehow inspiring. And then there’s Whitaker himself, whose portrayal seers the consciousness with little dialogue.

“There’s something about Forest that goes right to my heart,” Jarmusch said in a behind-the-scenes documentary. “There’s something very human and beautiful about his presence.”

Ghost Dog was big in the Black community due to a familiar Afro-Asian cultural theme born from East Coast summer scorchers driving urban Black youths of the ‘70s into air-conditioned grindhouse theaters for double-feature combos like Black Caesar and The Five Fingers of Death .

These Blaxploitation and martial arts films had a profound impact on kids seeing nonwhite heroes for the first time. That led to the emergence of the first Black martial arts leading man, the incomparable Jim Kelly, and a generation of young moviegoers raised to see themselves fighting back against The Man through music and movement.

Enter RZA, founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, whose music was shaped by those theaters and became the sound Jarmusch sought for the atmosphere of Ghost Dog . At the time, RZA just so happened to be looking for a project to score, spurred by a conversation he’d recently had with Quincy Jones (having never scored a film before, he looked to Peter and the Wolf and Sergei Prokofiev for guidance).

In Ghost Dog , we witness the protagonist’s unyielding loyalty to a feckless gangster (John Tormey) from a crew hanging on to relevance during the waning days of the Italian Mafia. “If one were to say in a word what the condition of being a samurai is, it’s basis lies first in seriously devoting one’s body and soul to his master,” Whitaker narrates from Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai by Yamamoto Tsunetomo.

Jarmusch compared Ghost Dog’s sense of devotion to that of Don Quixote, but it all boils down to finding security in a sense of purpose. In a rapidly changing world that rarely makes sense, it’s a comfort knowing someone like Jarmusch is still diving headfirst into the randomness we struggle to make sense of and taking notes.

The film speaks to so many of us. And like the Ghost Dog’s French-speaking Haitian-immigrant best friend (Isaach de Bankolé), we may not always know what’s being said, but we understand.

SEE IT: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai , rated R, plays at the Hollywood Theatre, 503-493-1128, hollywoodtheatre.org. 7 pm Saturday, Feb. 25. $8-$10.

Blu-ray Review – Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai – “Glorious to behold”

Forest Whitaker as Ghost Dog

Jim Jarmusch’s Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai has had a fantastic 4K restoration and is due out on 4K UHD, Limited Edition UHD Steelbook, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital from 23rd October 2023.

Forest Whitaker (Ghost Dog) lives above the world, alongside a flock of birds, in a homemade shack on the roof of an abandoned building. Guided by the words of an ancient samurai text, Ghost Dog is a professional killer able to dissolve into the night and move through the city unnoticed. When Ghost Dog’s code is dangerously betrayed by the dysfunctional mafia family that occasionally employs him, he reacts strictly in accordance with the Way of the Samurai.

I have always a been a fan of Jarmusch’s films, so when I heard he was making a samurai inspired movie back in the 1990s starring Forest Whitaker I was suitably intrigued. I still remember going to the cinema to see it and being blown away by the hip-hop, gangster, samurai movie. It seemed unlike anything else, yet the influences from the likes of Kurosawa, Suzuki and especially Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samouraï.

The mysterious Ghost Dog was saved as a kid, by a low level mafia enforcer. Ghost Dog then swears his loyalty to this new master and undertakes various hit jobs through the years. Due to miscommunication, honour and downright stupidity by other parties, the mob decide Ghost Dog must be killed. This does not end well for all involved!

L-R: Cliff Gorman as Sonny Valerio, Henry Silva as Ray Vargo, and Gene Ruffini as Old Consigliere

The film is like a dream. As if the essence of medieval Japan has infused the streets of an unnamed city in 90s America, which results in the film having a timeless quality to it. Ghost Dog will often spend time meditating on the ancient code of the samurai words within the book of Yamamoto Tsunetomo’s recorded sayings, Hagakure. This leads to scenes overlaid with pigeons flying through the sky, Ghost Dog practicing with his sword or images of nature which make the viewer contemplate those very words. Juxtapose this with the cartoons the various characters are watching that mirror events from the film and reveal the absurdity of violence.

So many levels within a simple tale of a warrior betrayed and bringing vengeance on those who deserve it.

ghost dog 2023

Tricia Vessey as Louise Vargo

It is a film that brings more, each time I watch it. The ritual of breaking into a car or sheathing a pistol as he would a sword. Ghost Dog’s conversation with his best friend, a French-speaking ice cream man named Raymond (played by the always wonderful Isaach de Bankolé ), neither of whom understand a word each other says, but who are in perfect sync with each other. The mafia trio of Henry Silva, Cliff Gorman and Gene Ruffini who bring some bizarre and uncomfortable moments with their conversations and thoughts on the people and events taking place. Ghost Dog’s meeting with the young Camille Winbush as Pearline reveals another side to the character as he passes on some of his teachings. Then there is RZA in a brief cameo. He passes Ghost Dog on the street and they each go forward onto their own quests. I always thought it would have been great to have another film with RZA’s character featuring that same scene.

The cinematography by Robby Müller (Paris, Texas) is beautiful making the streets of a decaying industrial area another character within the film. We look out over rooftops that promise brief freedom to those below and prowl the streets at night watching all the city has to offer.

The new restoration is glorious to behold. Everything is crystal clear and looks like it was made this year. The sound quality also means the brilliant soundtrack pops and the whole film is just lifted.

I have always loved the film from my first viewing and to now have it restored makes it wonderful to own once again. If you are a fan of the film then I highly recommend picking up this new edition. If you have never seen it then I think you may be missing out.

ghost dog 2023

Ghost survived living with a pack of Nevada coyotes. Now the dog's part of a bitter custody feud.

A nevada nonprofit is working to figure out who, if anyone, the dog belongs to or whether he should go up for adoption.

ghost dog 2023

It seemed like a simple feel-good story: A dog living in the Nevada desert with a pack of coyotes was rescued after hurting his paw and capturing the attention of local dog lovers.

The two women who trapped him in Henderson on Jan. 28 called him Ghost because he had a habit of disappearing when people got near. They thought he'd get treated for his injuries and put up for adoption.

But first, a local news station wanted to do a story about Ghost's life in the wild and his rescue. The news soon made headlines across the nation, and that's when things got complicated.

A Las Vegas family who says Ghost is theirs, and that his name is really Hades, came forward to claim him. The women who trapped Ghost didn't believe the family, leaving the two sides in a bitter feud that culminated this past weekend with a confrontation involving police.

LATEST UPDATE: Dog famed for living with coyotes in Nevada desert has emotional reunion with family

Living in the wild

Ghost was first spotted in July by Henderson residents who saw him running with a pack of three coyotes. Residents would post videos and photos of him from time to time on a neighborhood Facebook group, tracking his movements with keen interest.

Then last month a resident named Judy Hendrickson saw that Ghost was limping heavily and shot a video of him.

That's when a two-woman crew calling themselves the Southern Nevada Trapping Team say they knew they had to intervene and capture Ghost for fear the pack would turn on him.

In all, Ghost lived among the coyotes for at least six months and it showed. He's got bite scars all over his face and body, he had a broken toe (which was causing the limp and needs amputated), and his scrotum was so badly infected, a veterinarian said it would have to be removed altogether, said Carole Sandy, a board member with Amor Paludo Animal Rescue, which had taken charge of Ghost's care and potential adoption.

The surgeries would cost thousands, and a GoFundMe page raised more than $14,000 to pay for it.

A fight ensues

Christy Cabada of Las Vegas was watching the local news with her husband when they saw a story about Ghost.

Cabada said they immediately recognized the dog as Hades, the 4-year-old bull terrier mix that had escaped from their family member's home while they were dog-sitting last summer.

Cabada was soon texting with Susan McMullen of the Southern Nevada Trapping Team. Ghost had been staying with McMullen as he awaited surgery, which was scheduled for Tuesday.

Though Hades hadn't been vaccinated or chipped, Cabada said she had plenty of photos to prove ownership and sent them to McMullen.

McMullen, in consultation with Sandy, decided the dogs weren't the same and told Cabada that she would not be getting Ghost.

Soon after Cabada and her husband went to McMullen's house. Both women's stories vary wildly as to what happened next, but McMullen ended up putting Ghost in her car and leaving, prompting the Cabadas to follow her.

Police soon responded to the Cabadas' call that they were following the car of a woman who had stolen their dog.

When police arrived, they called Clark County Animal Protection, which impounded the dog and turned him over to a group called Animal Foundation.

Officer Luis Vidal, a spokesman with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, confirmed the agency was involved in the call. Officers determined that no crimes had occurred but could not decide who rightfully owned the dog, Vidal said.

VIdal said two people at the scene were cited for obstructing officers but declined to identify who that was. The department has no further involvement in the case.

What happens now?

The dog is now on a 10-day hold with Animal Foundation, said the group's spokeswoman, Kelsey Pizzi.

She declined to say whether he has gotten any surgeries but said that "we are caring for Ghost and he's doing well."

"He's being monitored by our veterinary team," she added.

During the 10-day hold, which ends early next week, she said her group is wading through "a handful" of claims from people who say Ghost is their dog, including the Cabadas.

She said they'll determine if any of them are his owners and whether he goes with one of them or is put up for general adoption.

Meanwhile both the Cabadas and the trapping team have obtained attorneys and believe the issue is headed for court.

The Cabadas say all they want is Hades back and for money from the GoFundMe to be returned to the donors.

"We just want him back home and pray that the day does come," Christy Cabada said.

Sandy said she wants a court injunction to keep Ghost away from the Cabadas and to be able to take charge of his adoption so they can find the best owners possible.

"We don't believe that this is their dog," she said.

Friendly Ghost: white dog adopted by coyotes gets help from rescue group

Animal spotted in the desert of southern Nevada likely to have been abandoned as a puppy, rescuers say

For the last few months, a ghost has roamed the desert of southern Nevada near Las Vegas with a pack of coyotes. The apparent phantom is actually a white dog named Ghost, who observers say the animals accepted as one of their own.

Residents in Henderson spotted the dog running through their neighborhood at night, sometimes with the coyotes as they played together, for at least six months, according to a fundraiser for the animal. But neighbors, who documented his movements on social media, grew concerned about an injury on Ghost’s leg that was causing a severe limp and tried unsuccessfully to catch him.

In late January, rescuers were finally able to trap Ghost, who they say was probably abandoned in the desert as a puppy, amid the concerns over his health.

“It seems like he may have been put out there between seven and eight months and somehow or another, the coyotes just accepted him,” Susan McMullen with the Southern Nevada Trapping Team told Fox5 . “He was actually just running with them and eating with them, but then he started to limp, and we were afraid … that the coyotes could turn on him.”

Rescuers tracked the pup’s movements for weeks before laying a trap, which in just six hours captured the dog, who warmed up to people quickly. “It was immediately determined by the trappers that Ghost was a sweetheart of a pup! He was skin and bones, so food was a priority, so the trappers began feeding him right out of their hands,” according to the GoFundMe. “Once at the trapper’s house, he would curl up in the dog bed that was in the crate, and roll over for belly rubs.”

“I personally evaluated him and determined he was highly adoptable,” said Carole Sandy with Amor Peludo animal rescue, the group working with Ghost’s rescuers. “He’s been lovely. He’s a wonderful dog.”

Ghost was affectionate but in rough shape, rescuers reported. The dog had a broken toe requiring amputation, an injury to his scrotum, ear infections and bites all over his body that led to infections. An exam also found rocks and stones in his stomach, which he ate due to hunger.

“He has lots of lots of medical issues and there are multiple surgeries that need to be performed,” Sandy said.

Ghost’s medical bills are more than $4,000, Fox5 reported. An anonymous donor covered $1,000 of his care, Sandy said.

“He’s got some rocks in his belly because he was probably hungry and ate some rocks, so we are just going to watch those and hopefully those will pass so we don’t have to have yet another surgery,” McMullen said.

The animal, who rescuers hope will eventually be adopted, is still adjusting to his new life, McMullen said. “He is not crate trained. He is not leash trained … he doesn’t sleep at night. He paces; he pants, night-time is really hard for him.”

It’s not yet clear what’s next for Ghost as controversy has arisen over his care. Amor Peludo, the animal rescue group working with the rescuers, reported that people claiming to be the dog’s owners showed up at McMullen’s home and harassed her. Authorities confiscated the dog and sent him to a local animal shelter, but the group said the dog was not receiving the treatment he needs. They say the owner who has come forward has not provided adequate proof that the dog is theirs.

“We don’t believe this is their dog,” Sandy said. “We want to make sure that Ghost is going to the best family possible. We are still willing to take Ghost into our rescue, pay for his care and get him into the most loving home.”

The Animal Foundation, the shelter currently in custody of Ghost, says the dog is doing well and receiving the care he needs. “We have a team of veterinarians. I can assure you he is being cared for. He is actually doing well,” said Kelsey Pizzi, the shelter’s communications manager.

Multiple people have claimed Ghost is their dog and the shelter is trying to determine who he belongs to, Pizzi said.

Now Forest Whitaker isn't the kind of guy you would normally think of for a smart ice cool hitman flick. His big lumbering appearance and droopy eye always gives him the look of a bad guy or suit type, not some ninja like assassin. But here we are in dare I say 'Leon' for a black audience? is that wrong of me? cos this sure as hell is what it is. Take the overall premise of 'Leon' and virtually copy it scene for scene and you have 'Ghost Dog' but with a nice samurai code twist. This film is actually based on a very good French film called 'Le Samouraï' which in turn also probably influenced Besson for his New York based hitman classic. Its pretty fair to say when watching that this is heavily influenced by those said films, from the hit sequences to the little girl who 'Ghost Dog' befriends but doesn't train...although that is hinted at somewhat towards the end. Personally I love this film, its could easily be a sequel to 'Leon' and moves just as sexually and gracefully including some excellent hit scenes, albeit a bit brief. The film is kinda slow and builds around 'GD' training in the art of samurai whilst living his simple life caring for pigeons. Your not really sure if your suppose to root for this guy either, he's not doing good stuff after all. He works for the mob and kills people, breaks into properties and steals cars pretty regularly, he doesn't kill innocents but nor does he care too much about them or their material possessions. Trying not to mention other films too much here but when you see the American mobsters in this it rings so many bells. The bad guys are a classic stereotypical cliched lineup of fat, aging, balding, badly dressed 70's looking rejects that could of come from any well known mafia flick you've ever heard of. I loved how they looked and spoke in that typical Nu Joisey/Nu Yawk fashion with their big tinted shades, dated tracksuits or leather coats, absolutely perfect. You could almost think of these guys as a parody really. Almost caricatures and exactly how you expect Italian American hoods to look and act with the addition of great names like 'Handsome Frank' and the all too common names of Vinny, Ray and Louie. The cast are familiar too, all the regular faces that normally play wheezing old fat mafioso's. Their boss is Henry Silva who is pretty much the perfect face for a bad guy, a mafia bad guy. The man is a character acting legend plus his face is evil looking with those sharp cheek bones and odd stretched wrinkle-less like skin complexion, no wonder he was in 'Dick Tracy'. There isn't too much action here like I said but that isn't a problem really. The film moves slow just like its main player and the outcome is resolved quite quickly really. The Japanese filling throughout is a nice touch which is obviously there because of the French film it plays homage to but it neither hinders or helps really, its just nice little touches that are pleasant to view. End of the day the samurai code doesn't really effect the film much apart from what 'GD' allows to happen. Didn't think the film needed the African American influence of rap music though, would of been nice without that, more unique really as the old gangster thing still looms somewhat. Still a unique film though can't dent that. For me the film is made with the stellar casting for the bad guys, they are really quite amusing, Whitaker does well also in his calm near silent role. A must see film if you like this kind of thing but just don't expect tonnes of action.

There were some interesting scenes (namely, when he shot the guy through the sink in his bathroom) but overall I didn't think it was great.

Forest Whitaker is the enigmatic hero of Jim Jarmusch’s idiosyncratic, culture-blending crime drama

Newly restored and now on blu-ray.

Jim Jarmusch combines his love for the ice-cool crime dramas of Jean-Pierre Melville and Seijun Suzuki with the philosophical dimensions of samurai mythology for an eccentrically postmodern take on the hit-man thriller.

In one of his defining roles, Forest Whitaker brings a commanding serenity to his portrayal of a Zen contract killer working for a bumbling mob outfit, a modern man who adheres steadfastly to the ideals of the Japanese warrior code even as chaos and violence spiral around him.

Featuring moody cinematography by the great Robby Müller, a mesmerizing score by the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, and a host of colorful character actors (including a memorably stone-faced Henry Silva), Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai plays like a pop-culture-sampling cinematic mixtape built around a one-of-a-kind tragic hero.

“A tribute to traditional notions of honor, loyalty, friendship, and professionalism, and a stylish, ironic pastiche inspired by the likes of Melville and Suzuki, it’s very funny, insightful, and highly original.”

KTNV - Las Vegas, Nevada

After ownership dispute, Las Vegas family re-claims Ghost, the dog who ran with coyotes

ghost dog 2023

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — After a custody dispute, a white dog known as "Ghost" has been reunited with its family.

The Animal Foundation released the canine to Christi Cabada and her family Tuesday night. Cabada says Ghost's real name is Hades, and he went missing seven months ago when a family member was dog-sitting.

Christi Cabada says she and her family were overwhelmed with emotion when they were reunited with their beloved dog, Hades.

“We had tears, we had laughs,” said Cabada.

Ghost gained national attention after a viral video showed him running with coyotes in the Inspirada neighborhood. After living in the desert for almost a year, animal enthusiasts said they were concerned since it looked like the dog was struggling and slowing down.

That led to the Southern Nevada Trapping Team capturing Ghost, who was taken to The Animal Foundation and placed on a 10-day legal hold while the foundation sorted it out. In the end, The Animal Foundation released Ghost to the Cabada family saying they provided ample evidence proving their ownership.

The video provided by the Animal Foundation captures the tail-wagging, tear-filled reunion.

“Even though it has been a good amount of time, he definitely recognized us and we're just happy he did," Cabada said.

The Animal Foundation examined Ghost for injuries and released him in what they called "good health."

“There are no stones, he's no longer limping and his toe is doing better," Cabada said. “There is surgery scheduled for the only issue that he got at the moment.”

The Cabada family says they've learned a lesson and they're just happy to have him home.

“We're grateful for everyone that helped out with Hades’ case,” said Cabada.

The Cabada family says all medical expenses are paid for and encourages anyone who donated to GofundMe to request their money back.

CUSTODY DISPUTE: Inside the custody feud over Ghost, the famous dog seen running with coyotes in the Las Vegas valley

The foundation said multiple groups came forward claiming to be Ghost's owner , but the Cabada family provided enough evidence to prove their ownership.

Forest Whitaker as Ghost Dog in Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999 / IMDB )

Forest Whitaker Film ‘Ghost Dog’ Is a Sampler’s Paradise

Jarmusch's 1999 classic Ghost Dog , now in a Criterion edition, freely mixes and matches Bushido philosophy, Mafia and samurai flicks, Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, and lo-fi hip-hop into a sly and dreamy comedy about role-playing.

ghost dog 2023

An out-of-time transmission from the late 1990s, when auteurs were fully embracing genre and pre-millennium jitters was tossing old artistic certainties out the window, Jim Jarmusch ‘s Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai is a spectacular oddity that still confounds expectations. Most descriptions try to present it as a kind of rap-samurai mash-up. That’s to be expected, given the prominent place Jarmusch gives the sonic backdrops woven in by RZA and the title character’s highly Wu-Tang-esque name.

Also, mainstream American interest in the Asian action cinema that inspired the likes of Wu-Tang was leading towards the mini-genre of rap-martial arts crossover movies ( Andrzej Bartkowiak ‘s 2000 film Romeo Must Die with Jet Li and DMX being one of the first). But that kind of limited elevator pitch hardly explains what Jarmusch actually puts on screen. In an essay for the book accompanying the new Criterion Collection release, critic Greg Tate notes the “ smattering of boos ” he heard when seeing it opening weekend in a Times Square theater.

Ghost Dog stars a typically but still authentically soulful Forest Whitaker in the title role as a self-styled samurai who does hits for Louie (John Tormey), a Mafioso who once saved his life. As with almost every story involving assassins, the plot kicks off after a hit goes wrong. After carrying out his assignment to kill a made man, Ghost Dog (as Louie explains to his fellow Mafiosi, “a lot of these Black guys, they got names like that”) discovers a surprise in the man’s room: Louise Vargo (Tricia Vessey), the daughter of Louie’s boss Ray (Henry Silva).

For reasons that, quite honestly, never quite make much sense, even though Ghost Dog spares Louise’s life, the fact that she was there and saw him now means there’s a hit out on the hitman. This leaves Louie caught between his loyalty to his master and to his “retainer”. (Ghost Dog likes to read ancient texts like the Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai , and so tends to talk in such archaic terms.)

img-759

Cliff Gorman as Sonny Valerio ( IMDB )

At this point, most films would become an escalating series of confrontations in which Ghost Dog takes out ever-larger numbers of enemies before finally facing Louie in a final showdown in which vengeance and duty vie with friendship for the upper hand. To some degree, this is what happens. Once Ray’s goons ransack Ghost Dog’s rooftop hideout and kill the pigeons whom he lovingly trains and uses to send and receive messages, his path of righteous revenge is laid out for him.

As ever, though, Jarmusch takes the slow, ambling way there. Still a minimalist by heart, he’s not so rushed into getting to the next scene that he fails to take a side trip, such as insert a short quote from the Hagakure , check out what some characters are watching on TV (mostly old cartoons like Woody Woodpecker and Heckle and Jeckle ), or take a winding pass over Jersey City with RZA’s low drum-brush beats in the background.

A relaxed, occasionally spacey movie about solitude and finding one’s place in the world as much as anything, it seems almost as interested in Ghost Dog’s killing work as in the rare connections he makes with other people. There’s little dramatic necessity for his interactions with a French-speaking immigrant ice-cream salesman (bright and buoyant Jarmusch favorite Isaach De Bankole) who considers them great friends, although they share no language or a girl (a young Camille Winbush) with whom he talks about books. But these scenes add a welcome texture to Ghost Dog’s life that has nothing to do with his profession or the shootouts that will determine his ultimate fate.

Part of Ghost Dog ‘s texturing is also the web of influences threaded throughout. Jarmusch is unafraid to let the stitching show. He was just as open about his influences in his 1995 neo-Western Dead Man (a movie that RZA, in one of the Criterion interviews, calls out as the movie that made him want to work with Jarmusch), which felt just like what might happen if somebody mixed up William Blake poetry and Neil Young feedback with monochromatic cinematography and Johnny Depp’s cheekbones.

img-760

Camille Winbush as Pearline ( Criterion )

In Ghost Dog , the Mafiosi are a grab-bag of Martin Scorsese and Abel Ferrara alumni, while the cool attentiveness to Ghost Dog’s professionalism—samurai training rituals that are more like mindfulness exercises, the business man’s briefcase carrying his gun and other tools—ripples with references to Jean-Pierre Melville and Seijun Suzuki . In one stacked reference that compounds cinematic tropes with the unbelievability coursing through some of the plot’s more nonsensical turns, Jarmusch puts a copy of Ryūnosuke Akutagawa ‘s Rashomon in the hands of Louise, whose character seems copied from Natalie Portman in Luc Besson ‘s L é on: The Professional (1994).

But as ever with Jarmusch, the way he mixes these elements make the movie more than the sum of those elements. Similar to how Quentin Tarantino pulls his (albeit denser and somewhat less organic feeling) lattice of references together with his trademark tongue-in-cheek dialogue, Jarmusch drops in deadpan comedic riffs throughout, which undercut the seriousness of the plot and highlight the deeper themes he is pointing towards.

It would be going too far to say that Ghost Dog is a Zen movie. But one of the first Hagakure quotes Jarmusch includes on-screen reads: “Every day without fail one should consider himself as dead.” Later: “It is a good viewpoint to see the world as a dream.”

Sometimes, the message is right there.

Ghost Dog 2 Happening with Rza, Forest Whitaker & Jim Jarmusch

The original team behind Ghost Dog: Way of the Samuria are set to return for a true sequel to the underground cult hit, which could become a TV series.

There's a huge difference between cult hit and underground cult oddity. The second of which you love but most, or none of your friends have seen. Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai definitely falls into that later catagory. And while you've long dreamed of a sequel, no one else really knows what you're talking about. Well, perhaps they'll soon understand, as Ghost Dog 2 is happening nearly 10 years after the first movie arrived.

Ghost Dog: The Way of The Samurai hit the indie circuit in 2000 and made a little bit of noise amongst genre fans. It starred Forest Whitaker, who didn't necessarily scream silent warrior at the time, and still doesn't, though Rogue One helps his street cred. The movie was directed by Jim Jarmusch who hasn't ever made a mainstream movie his entire life. Now, the pair are back, thanks to Wu Tang rapper RZA. He is writing the sequel to Ghost Dog , and the musician turned Kung Fu mastermind claims that Whitaker and Jarmusch have already signed on.

"Jim Jarmusch, my good buddy, and  Forest Whitaker , have both signed on with me and another writer named Dallas Jackson, to executive produce another Ghost Dog. And we already have something written. So maybe Ghost Dog will make its way back to the silver screen, or small screen."

What's interesting here is that RZA doesn't rule out his script from being turned into an episodic series. Which could certainly find a home on a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu. We can probably rule out the new Disney streaming service, but an episodic series based on Ghost Dog could work. The story follows a contract killer, a master of his trade who can whirl a gun at warp speed and moves through this world like a phantom, stealthy and evanescent. In the spirit of the samurai, he has pledged his loyalty to a small time mobster named Louie (John Tormey) who saved his life many years before.

Neather Jim Jarmusch nor Forest Whitaker have spoken publicly about the project yet. RZA claims that the original duo are executive producing at this time so it's not immediately clear if Whitaker will step back into character or if Jarmusch will direct. Though RZA uses the word 'signed' it sounds like there are a lot of missing details in his update.

We won't spoil it here, because we know many of you have never seen the original, and will be curious to check it out now. But that ending! How will the contract killer's legacy continue in a true sequel or TV series? Could it be a prequel TV show? It's always weird when a true arthouse experiment gets a follow-up. And this is one no one was expecting. We'll have to wait until a more official announcement is made. We have the trailer for you to watch here, a movie which boasts one of the best soundtrack albums of that year. This news comes to us from Telerama via BirthMoviesDeath .

10 Amazing Details About The 2023 Black Ghost Challenger

As the penultimate Challenger Last Call model, explore the unique details that make the reimagined Black Ghost so special

The Dodge Challenger is without question one of the most iconic American nameplates to ever be released. Dating back to 1969, the Challenger has been one of the flagship muscle cars for Dodge, combining speed and raw power to create the ultimate driving machine. The Challenger has since been through three generations, the first from ‘69 to ‘74, the second from ‘78 to ‘83, and the third from 2009 until 2023 with a facelift in 2015. The Challenger as we know it will no longer be produced with Dodge moving to electric power, but Dodge is making sure to honor the nameplate with a run of ‘last call’ models.

The penultimate Dodge Challenger last call model comes in the form of the Black Ghost, paying homage to the legendary 1970 Challenger which earned the same nickname after tearing up the Detroit street racing scene. This Challenger was driven by Godfrey Qualls who passed away in 2015, with the car subsequently taken care of by his son, until it was sold at auction in June 2023 for $1.07 Million. Each of the four Challenger Last Call models has its unique style, but none quite captures the racing spirit like the Black Ghost. Tweaking elements both inside and outside, here are ten of the best details about the ‘23 Challenger Black Ghost.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Dodge's website and other authoritative sources, including Car and Driver and MotorTrend.

Every Single Dodge Last Call Muscle Car

10 honoring the original '70 black ghost with black and chrome paint job, recreating the stealth design.

Aside from leaving its competition in the dust of Detroit, The Black Ghost gained its nickname from its stark black paint job as well as its blistering performance . In 2023, Dodge applied the same paint job throughout the exterior of the Challenger Black Ghost, creating one of the meanest-looking Challengers to ever roll out of the factory.

  • The black, white, and chrome color scheme is the only option for the '23 Black Ghost, replicating the original car from 1970.
  • Every element of the exterior follows the color scheme, with the fuel cap being chrome along with the badges being either chrome or black.

The majority of the bodywork is black, with the same white racing stripe making a return on the rear of the car in front of the black lip spoiler that's standard on 2023 Challengers. The 20-inch satin-finished 'Warp Speed' wheels blend the modern Challenger design with the classic 1970 dish-style chrome wheels that featured on the original Black Ghost, with more chrome being used for features such as the fuel filler cap.

9 The Roof Is Finished In An Exclusive 'Gator Skin' Vinyl Design

One of the most iconic details of the original brought forward.

One of the defining visual elements of the original 1970 Challenger Black Ghost is its alligator skin-patterned roof, which Dodge brought back for the 2023 special edition Challenger to honor the Black Ghost name as much as possible. No other Challenger features this design, making the new Black Ghost unmistakable against what’s now a large group of 2023 Challengers.

Most Notable Takeaways

  • The '23 version of the Black Ghost uses vinyl wrap to recreate the Gator Skin roof style of the original '70 Black Ghost.
  • It's the only production Dodge Challenger to have the Gator Skin roof design.

It’s almost identical to the ‘70 Challengers version, using a vinyl wrap on the roof that features lighter gray shades and a matte finish to create a stunning contrast to match the original as closely as possible. Dodge calls the design the ‘Gator Skin’ for 2023, standing out just as much as the ‘70 Black Ghost to add tonnes of character and heritage.

8 A Midnight Metallic SRT Grille Badge

Although a small detail, the all-black SRT logo is one of the best design editions to the ‘23 Challenger Black Ghost for a couple of key reasons. Firstly, it draws most of the attention to the classic Challenger script logo, which was brought back to honor the 1970 Challenger model that the Black Ghost legend was born from. It also represents the pinnacle of Dodge Performance.

  • The black badge blends in with the grille to draw attention to the Challenger script logo.
  • The SRT logo can also be found on the seats inside the Black Ghost, representing the modern performance.
  • No other '23 Challenger has a black SRT badge as standard.

The SRT badge is still noticeable, however making the script logo the prominent feature of the grille adds to the distinctiveness of the ‘23 Black Ghost. All other ‘23 Challenger versions have the SRT badge finished in silver, meaning that the Black Ghost has yet another exclusive design feature that simply looks cool.

Dodge Challenger Vs. Charger: Choosing The Right Muscle Car For You

7 featuring the classic challenger script logo, bringing back the classic emblem from the '60s and '70s.

A staple feature of the classic Challengers, including the original 1970 Black Ghost, was the Challenger script badge that was present on the grille and side of the car. For modern Challengers , this feature was lost as it didn’t quite match the modern, aggressive style. However, the script logo makes a welcome return for one of the last-ever Challengers as we know them.

  • The Black Ghost is the only 2023 Dodge Challenger to feature the script logo.
  • As well as the Challenger script logo, the Black Ghost also features the bold 'D O D G E' logo on the face of the hood.
  • The script logo is finished in chrome to stand out against the black paint job.

Just like the old cars, the script logo features on the left-hand side of the grille, the right side of the rear lip spoiler, and beside the front wheel arch. The Black Ghost makes a habit of implementing small details that end up making a nostalgic difference, with the classic Challenger script logo being one of the very best details on this limited-run model.

6 The Interior Is Finished In Black Laguna Leather To Match The Exterior

Maintains the same aggressive exterior appearance.

Moving into the interior of the 2023 Challenger Black Ghost, the majority of the features are taken from the base Challengers, which is by no means a bad thing. With the exterior of the car being finished in a black-and-white paint job, it's only right for the interior to continue the trend, just as the original Black Ghost did in 1970. Inside, the ‘23 Black Ghost has a jet black Laguna leather trim for the seats, dashboard, and the center of the steering wheel.

  • The seats feature both Laguna leather and Alcántara for optimal comfort.
  • Genuine Carbon fiber accents can also be found throughout the cabin.
  • The black and white color scheme is very closely followed to connect the inside with the outside.

White accent stitching is used on the seats, to add visual interest and form a stronger connection with the exterior. As well as Laguna leather, the ‘23 Black Ghost utilizes other materials, with Alcántara being used for the base of the seats, the interior door panel, and the steering wheel grip. Small sections of carbon fiber are also implemented, being used to encase the 8.4-inch center touchscreen and gauge cluster.

5 The Black Ghost Interior Panel Badge

Subtly adding to the exclusivity.

Where the Black Ghost differs from other Challenger models is the small, exclusive details, such as the bespoke Black Ghost interior panel badge.

Most Notable Takeaways:

  • Only one Black Ghost badge can be found in the interior, located on the dashboard.
  • The badge follows the same Gator Skin design as the roof.
  • As well as the Black Ghost badge, the Last Call plaque can also be found under the hood.

You’ll find the exclusive interior badge under the air vent on the passenger side of the dash. Although it doesn’t jump out at you straight away, it’s a massively welcome feature that adds further character that you won’t find in any other Challenger (aside from the original ‘70 version of course). The Black Ghost badge is also finished with the same Gator Skin roof pattern that’s become a defining element for the iconic special edition nameplate.

Here’s What Makes Chrysler’s HEMI So Special

4 a beefed up 6.2-liter v-8 producing 807 hp for the black ghost, one of the most powerful challengers of all time.

Under the hood of every muscle car, especially with the Challenger nameplate, is what makes this category so special. In modern times thanks to the amount of technology available to efficiently increase performance, American muscle cars feature some of the biggest, most powerful engines on the road today.

For one of the last Challengers, Dodge combines the mighty 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 from the Challenger SRT Redeye Widebody with the powertrain mapping of the Challenger SRT Super Stock which debuted in 2020.

  • The '23 Black Ghost packs the same 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 found in the Challenger SRT Redeye.
  • The Black Ghost also uses a 2.7-liter supercharger to increase its power output.
  • The horsepower and torque levels are shared with the Challenger SRT Super Stock.

This means that the Black Ghost produces up to 807 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque, supplying ten more horsepower than the Challenger Redeye whose platform the Black Ghost is built on. Both the Challenger Redeye and Super Stock can reach 203 MPH, a number that the 2023 Black Ghost will match with its similar power output. This power output does lead to a huge amount of wheelspin for the Black Ghost, but that’s to be expected with a HEMI V-8 under the hood.

2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost Performance Specifications

(Source: Dodge)

3 The '23 Black Ghost Features A Performance-Tuned Bilstein Suspension System

Provides excellent stability on launch and through the corners.

It's not just the 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 engine and the Brembo Braking system that delivers the staggering performance from the ‘23 Challenger Black Ghost, the muscle car is also kitted out with the Bilstein adaptive damping suspension system that comes standard on Hellcat models. This system is highly acclaimed in the automotive industry for its exceptional performance and ride quality, which it has proven in the ‘23 Challenger Redeye that the Black Ghost is based on.

  • The Bilstein adaptive suspension can be found as standard on all SRT Hellcats.
  • This suspension can be adjusted to both your preferences and to best suit the current conditions.
  • The adaptive technology is always analyzing the road, keeping the Black Ghost stable at all times.

The Bilstein adaptive suspension system also offers different driving modes, allowing you to tailor the suspension settings to your preferences. This keeps the Challenger Black Ghost stable when putting the power down, giving you more control and confidence in handling the car’s 807 horsepower. The adaptive damping technology constantly reads the road, ensuring that your experience in the Black Ghost is as smooth as possible.

2 An All-Black Brembo Brake System

Provides excellent stopping power for the 807 horsepower.

Alongside the chrome accents and white racing stripe, the 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost carries the monochrome style in every area the eye can see. Behind the chrome wheels in the Black Ghost’s Brembo brake system , designed to provide ample stopping power after the huge power is put down.

  • The Brembo braking system can also be found as standard on all 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT models.
  • The brake calipers are barely visible behind the chrome wheels, fitting in with the overall stealth design.

On other ‘23 Challenger versions, the calibers can be read, but for the Black Ghost, they're exclusively all-black. Although the brake calipers aren’t the first area of the car that's considered when it comes to exterior design, the cohesion the black creates maintains the ‘ghost’ image perfectly. Throughout the industry, Brembo brakes are widely considered as some of the very best on the market.

Your First Look At The Next Generation Of Mopar Muscle

1 the '23 black ghost is limited to 300 models, with a $99,315 msrp, makes the black ghost the most expensive modern-day dodge challenger ever produced.

If you’re looking to get your hands on a ‘23 Challenger Black Ghost, it might be quite the challenge as the limited edition model is only receiving 300 models . By limiting the production number, the all-new Black Ghost can replicate the exclusivity and desire that the original ‘70 Black Ghost created. Also, the price tag is much higher than the rest of the last-call Dodge Challengers due to its limited run.

  • The '23 Black Ghost has already nearly doubled in value since its release.
  • Limited to 300 models, it's also one of the rarest Challengers ever made.
  • The current price for the Challenger Black Ghost sits around $200,000 for resale.

The 2023 Challenger Black Ghost has a starting price of $99,315, making it the most expensive Dodge Challenger ever produced. However, at a Barrett Jackson auction, a 2023 Black Ghost sold for $198,000, proving just how quickly the price for this Last Call Challenger has shot up.

PRE-ORDER ALERT: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai on 4K UHD and 4K UHD SteelBook Coming to the UK 10/23

Posted Thu Sep 14, 2023 at 09:12 AM PDT by Tom Landy

On October 23, Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai starring Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in his Cannes Best Actor winning role will be getting a 4K release  (4K restoration)  in the UK from STUDIOCANAL. A 4K SteelBook will be available at Zavvi.

Pre-orders are now available.

Featuring moody cinematography by the great Robby Müller (Paris, Texas), a sublime score by the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, and a host of colourful character actors (including a memorably stone-faced Henry Silva), GHOST DOG: THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI plays like a pop-culture-sampling cinematic mixtape built around a one-of-a-kind tragic hero. Described by Time Out as “very funny, insightful and highly original”, the film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and remains one of Jarmusch’s best-loved films.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray (UK Import)

Across the pond with StudioCanal comes the 4K release of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai . This 2160p UHD image has a slight upgrade from that banger of a Blu-ray Criterion release, but it's not a night and day difference. The DTS-HD 5.1 audio mix sounds good enough which is the same audio track from the Blu-ray release. There are only a couple of vintage bouns features included, all of which are on the Criterion release as well. Worth A Look.

Story Review Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take

ghost dog 2023

From a full-contact Kumite in Hong Kong ( Bloodsport ) to the mafia-run streets of New Jersey, Forest Whitaker removes his up-tight military police character from the limelight to become a quiet, slick ninja in Jim Jarmusch’s  Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai . Similar to Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 film Le Samourai , both films focus on killers who live by a code of ethics where their assassinations and murders define who they are. In essence, their work is a ballet of violence, but Jarmusch takes it a step further by allowing his character to explore two different mindsets - an old-school peaceful samurai and that of a modern-day hitman for the mob. The results are outstanding.

The movie follows Ghost Dog (Whitaker) who is a hitman for an Italian mob in New Jersey, specifically answering to the boss Vargo and the underboss Louie, who saved his life. Ghost Dog now feels indebted to him, which of course is an element of being a samurai. In fact, Ghost Dog reads, believes, and lives on the words written in his Hagakure - a few small passages that teach the reader how to become a peaceful warrior. Somewhere down the road, Ghost Dog is sent on a hit, where he does not kill a girl in the room with his intended target, which leads the mafia to put a hit out on him out of fear of police involvement. The catch is that nobody really knows who Ghost Dog is since he and Louie have only communicated through carrier pigeons since he saved his young life all those years ago. Leading a solitary and quiet life, the only real friends Ghost Dog has come in the form of a French ice cream truck owner and a young girl he befriends who seems interested in the way of the samurai.

Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai tells its story in a unique way that mixes some dark humor and a violent drama into one as the titular character himself must bring both aspects of his life - the peaceful samurai and the violent hit-man together in unity before the sun goes down. Whitaker perfectly portrays these two emotional worlds from dealing with mob guys to finding his pigeons massacred on the rooftop. The comedy takes place mostly with the Italian mob as they are more or fewer caricatures of themselves, speaking in vulgar sentences in a thick Jersey accent, complete with outrageous jumpsuits, along with a cringe-inducing scene where one of them tries to rap. Jarmusch wanted to merge these two cultures and genres where Ghost Dog would take down the over-the-top belief system in the mafia that romanticizes their brutal practices. At the same time, the ancient beliefs of the samurai are just as excessive, yet on the other end of the spectrum. It’s a fine line he walks, but it’s done perfectly here.

ghost dog 2023

With a stoic and brilliant performance by Whitaker, some remarkable camera work from Jarmusch, and an impressive soundtrack score by Wu-Tang Clan musician RZA, Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai is just as great, poignant, and weird as when it came out.

Vital Disc Stats: The 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray Ghost Dog blades its way to 4K + Blu-ray via Studio Canal in a Region Free Disc. Both Discs are housed inside a hard, black plastic case. The artwork features Whitaker standing by some sort of garage with the title of the film. For this review were only issued a check disc without final packaging.

Video Review

ghost dog 2023

Ghost Dog travels to the realm of 4K with a 2160p UHD 4K transfer with Dolby Vision. The Criterion Collection released this film on Blu-ray not too long ago and it looked fantastic. The color changes and detail was greatly improved. While this 4K image looks great, it's not a night and day difference from that Criterion release.

The Dolby Vision allows those nuanced ambers to shine through in those warm interior locations more often. The decaying blues and greens are a tiny bit more pronounced as well. Those dark scenes during the opening credits allow for the faint blue sky to contrast nicely with the city street lights. The red blood looks very bold and rich in this 4K image, especially over white porcelain. Black levels are inky and show no major signs of murky shadows. The skin tones are natural, superficially during the bright, sunny exteriors. Even the camouflage wardrobe looks amazing this time around.

The detail is sharp and vivid, even in those nighttime sequences. There is still a good layer of grain, keeping the image in its filmic state. Daytime scenes reveal the most detail with great closeups that include facial pores, individual facial stubble and hair, makeup applications, and more. The textures in the costumes, weapons, and vehicles all look fantastic. There are no major issues with banding, aliasing, or heavy noise here. While this isn't a major upgrade from that Criterion video presentation in 1080p, there are some small nuanced color upticks by way of Dolby Vision that make this worth it one is inclined to add a 4K of this movie to their collection.

Audio Review

ghost dog 2023

The same DTS-HD 5.1 audio track is included here, which sounds good. But again, this is a soft-sounding film without a lot of action beats. Sure, gunshots and cars go by, but subtle is the keyword here. This release comes with a lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio mix that sounds great but is never overly used or chaotic. In fact, this is quite a simple audio track that fits the story and tone of the film, that of a peaceful warrior. Sound effects of gunshots and vehicles driving by sound robust, but never intense or murderous like they would in a giant blockbuster film.

They are nuanced and well-balanced, and maybe even a tiny bit on the softer side, but it has a greater impact in the long run here. Ambient noises of people talking on the street, an ice cream truck’s musical notes, and pigeons chirping all sound wonderful. There is a fantastic low end of bass as well when the RZA’s musical score kicks in that has a very good rumble to it. The dialogue is always clean and clear, and free of any audio issues to speak of.

Special Features

ghost dog 2023

HDD was only provided with a check Disc this time out of the 4K. The Blu-ray was not included, which is where the bonus features are. There are no new extras on this set. Just a couple of vintage bonus features from when the movie came out are included.

  • The Odyssey: A Journey Into The Life Of A Samurai (HD, 22 Mins.) - Yet another vintage interview from the year 2000 with Jim, Forest, and RZA as they discuss making the film.
  • Deleted Scenes And Outtakes (HD, 6 Mins.) - A couple of deleted scenes and extended sequences are included here.
  • Trailer (HD, 2 Mins.) - Trailer for the film.

Final Thoughts

ghost dog 2023

StudioCanal delivers a great-looking 4K image with Dolby Vision of Ghost Dog . It might not be the greatest upgrade from that Criterion release, but for Fans of the film, this 4K is the only way right now to see it in 2160p with Dolby Vision HDR. The DTS-HD 5.1 audio track sounds good and there are only a couple of vintage extras included. The Criterion version is still the best way to go with all of the excellent bonus features, but for super fans of the film that have been clamoring for the 4K release - here it is. Worth A Look.
