Trinity Yachts 142: Big Zip

  • By Dudley Dawson
  • Updated: January 27, 2011

big zip yacht

I was happy for the owner who had taken delivery of Big Zip , a motoryacht built by Trinity Yachts that would be enjoyed by his family and fortunate guests for many years to come. And I was happy for Trinity too, because the yacht was proof-positive, not just of the New Orleans-based builder’s full recovery from Hurricane Katrina, but of its obvious flourishing in the intervening years as well.

Most of all, though, I was happy for me. This was more than just the opportunity to see Big Zip and to share the story of this yacht and its mysterious name with others; it was an opportunity to spend some time aboard on the kind of warm, sunny day that reinforced all my convictions about yachting being well worth the cost and effort it sometimes entails.

Big Zip , carrying a tri-deck arrangement on a 142-foot hull, is delightfully unpretentious, both inside and out. During my years as a designer with the late Jack Hargrave, he insisted that any new build must look good without sheer stripes, boottop or a deep-blue hull. If a little makeup helped, all the better, but he believed the unadorned form should be attractive on its own. This is certainly the case with Big Zip , designed by Trinity’s in-house design team led by Geoff Van Aller. The basic shape is nicely proportioned and balanced. Knuckles and reveals worked into her exterior surfaces create shadow lines that look good from every angle.

Evan Marshall has taken a similarly straightforward approach with the interior, where midtoned American cherry cabinetry and moldings contrast nicely with light silks and other fabrics on bulkheads and overheads. Honey-onyx soles in the master stateroom and art-glass doors on upper cabinets add to the appeal. The result? A boat where the owner’s family and grandkids can relax in casual enjoyment, while his business associates can meet within an ambience of understated elegance. It’s also advisable to strike such a balance for the charter service in which Big Zip will be engaged.

To that end, Marshall and Trinity, in consultation with the owner, have designed a traditional arrangement that offers great flexibility. There are four guest staterooms belowdecks, nearly equal in size but differing in detail. Three have king berths, while the fourth has twin berths.

There’s an impressive master suite forward on the main deck, with a head with both tub and shower. The side decks go up and over the master suite for access to the foredeck, so the suite enjoys complete privacy. It’s also buffered from the noise and heat of the galley by an owner’s office to starboard and large his-and-hers hanging lockers to port.

big zip yacht

Any large yacht benefits from adequate crew and service space, but it’s especially important for charter service. Big Zip has three en suite staterooms for six crew adjacent to a spacious mess, forward of the guest staterooms. The captain’s cabin with double berth is properly placed abaft the pilothouse. A private crew stair leads from the lower cabins to the large, well-equipped main-deck galley, and there’s a hidden door from the crew quarters for servicing the lower guest staterooms to conceal crew activity from guests. Even though the side decks are not continuous on the main level, the crew has bow-to-stern access, via stairs and the upper deck, without entering guest areas.

Decisions, decisions. It’s tough for me to choose my favorite place on board — between the public areas on the main deck, those on the bridge deck and those on the top deck. Each has its own advantages for guests to discover. The salon and dining areas on the main deck are enhanced by coffered overheads with lots of lighting for night service, and low-sill windows to bring in more sunshine and expand the view during daylight hours. There are foyers aft and on both sides forward, and the dining table and salon sofas and chairs are well inboard so guests can pass outboard next to the windows without disturbing those already seated. There’s seating for 10 around a table on the open afterdeck, and stairs to port and starboard lead to an oversize stern platform. In one of the subtle touches that result when an experienced designer, builder and owner team up, the hull wings do not extend fully to the stern, so small boats can be boarded from aft or from either side.

The bridge deck tips the balance a little more to outdoor activity than inside, with another table for 10 plus some lounge chairs and a settee aft, and a couple of cozy dinettes forward that are incorporated into the Portuguese bridge.

The bridge-deck skylounge, though a bit smaller than the salon on the main deck in area, does not disappoint in outfit. There’s a bar and game table, plus lots of seating for movie watching, all with ostrich-leather accents and a beautiful sky painted on the overhead. The theme continues into the pilothouse, where another mural, painted as an antique map of the world, adorns the overhead, and a circular companion settee abaft the helm chairs invites guests to relax for a while.

If the bridge deck leans discreetly in favor of outdoor space, the top deck makes no pretense at all. With wing stations on the bridge deck for docking and close-quarter maneuvering, there is no need for a flying bridge, so the forward end of the top deck carries lounges and a whirlpool spa that provide the best views. Umbrellas shade this forward area when desired. Under the large hardtop are a bar with seating for eight, a dinette with seating for four and a day-head. The after end of the deck carries a RIB and PWCs as well as a davit for handling them.

big zip yacht

One area that will be seen by few guests, but which is of vital importance to them, is the engine room. I have been impressed with the quality of Trinity engine rooms since the company’s first yachts, and Big Zip is no exception. The designers create engineering spaces with enough room to do the work that needs to be done in them. Access is provided from both the stern platform and the side deck, and there’s even a hidden watertight hatch in the forward bulkhead providing emergency escape for both crew and guests. The machinery space is even more open than usual, with superior accessibility to all vital components for control and maintenance.

Based on what I saw during my visit, the yacht is sure to be a joy to her owner, her guests and her crew. And adding it all together, I realized I had developed my own understanding of the yacht’s name. It could refer to the details they forgot to address: zero, nada , nothing — Big Zip .

Her engineering and exterior design are the work of Trinity Yachts, while renowned British designer Evan K Marshall finished her classically styled interiors. The accommodation provides for up to 10 guests over 5 spacious cabins, each with en-suite facilities.

NOTABLE FEATURES OF AQUASITION: ~ Jacuzzi ~ Classically styled interiors ~ Alfresco dining areas across three decks ~ Upper deck Master suite with private lounge ~ Spacious swim platform

The main deck aft has a large table and seating for up to 10 guests for alfresco dining in the shade and outdoor lounging. Two staircases connect with the large swim platform where guests can lounge and sunbathe beside the water.

The upper deck aft is an elegant space for alfresco dining to make the most of the sunset: A circular table ensures that all eight guests can interact with each other and after the meal, the aft is fitted with a long sofa, armchairs and a coffee table for after-dinner refreshments. For guests looking for a quieter space to socialise away from the main group, the bow is fitted with two small tables and integrated seating.

The sundeck is fitted with a generous forward Jacuzzi and sunpads on either side, while the central area is shaded by a hardtop and contains an informal dining table also ideal for lounging outside with gadgets and a reading material. The wet bar opposite has an excellent selection of drinks for refreshments throughout the day, while the aft is dedicated to tender and water toys storage, with a crane for easy launch and retrieval of vessels.

The main deck is fitted with a classically styled interior with contemporary elements, using warm wood panelling and cream white furnishings with accents in gold. Two large sofas and armchairs surround a coffee table located in the centre of the room, which receives plenty of light through the windows running along the port and starboard sides. A partitioning wall separates the salon from the forward formal dining area, which uses the aforementioned golden accents in the chandelier and painting to form a rich environment suited to celebrating special events among family and friends.

65 years ago today, Queen Elizabeth and her royal yacht Britannia passed under the Mackinac Bridge

ST. IGNACE, MI - Sixty-five years ago today, royal fever gripped the Straits of Mackinac as Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, passed underneath Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge on July 5, 1959, aboard their yacht, the Britannia.

The British royals had embarked on a six-week tour the month before, destined for many stops in Canada and one in the U.S. A highlight was the 33-year-old queen’s ceremony with U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower. It officially opened the St. Lawrence Seaway, a system of locks and canals which connects shipping channels in the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.

The monarch’s 412-foot yacht motored up the Detroit River, then north up Lake Huron, passing under the Mackinac Bridge and heading down Lake Michigan before stopping for the couple’s first-ever visit to Chicago.

For security reasons, the Britannia’s passage under the Mackinac Bridge on a summer Sunday afternoon took a little planning, as traffic on the nearly 2-year-old bridge needed to be stopped.

These details were explained by Lawrence A. Rubin, former executive secretary of the Mackinac Bridge Authority as well as a key figure in the construction and financing of the landmark span, in his book “ Bridging the Straits: The Story of the Mighty Mac .”

The queen’s protection detail had visited the Mackinac Bridge Authority a few days before the yacht arrived in the Straits. They wanted all traffic stopped at the north and south towers during the time the Britannia passed underneath the middle of the main span of the 5-mile-long bridge. Rubin had suggested stricter guidelines, according to his book’s account:

“I was willing to oblige, but suggested we hold up traffic on both ends of the bridge rather than at the towers. That would not do, countered the Britishers. They did not want to inconvenience anyone more than absolutely necessary.”

When the big day arrived, thousands of people had gathered in the Straits area to see the monarch’s yacht cruise by. According to accounts of the royal tour, the young queen had recently told just a handful of people that she was pregnant with her third child, who would arrive the next year as Prince Andrew.

Rubin’s account says a dense fog moved into the St. Ignace/Mackinaw City area, making it difficult for bridge staff to track the Britannia’s progress toward the Mighty Mac. When they finally spotted the yacht, it was just 500 yards east of the bridge. The signal was given and traffic was stopped.

What happened next was very un-British:

“I suppose that in England, proper Englishmen would remain in their cars, but this was America and hundreds of car occupants ditched their vehicles and ran out onto the center of the bridge, waving and shouting for a look at the British royalty, especially Prince Philip,” Rubin wrote. “It must be admitted with some measure of shame that some persons threw small items such as coins over the side and there were even a few who spat.”

The next day, on July 6, the Britannia and her royal entourage arrived in Chicago. The queen and her prince took a small boat to shore, where they were met by Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley and other dignitaries to start her historic 14-hour tour of the Windy City, according to the Chicago Tribune.

While there, she toured the Art Institute of Chicago, dined at the Chicago Hilton & Towers, and even ducked out of a reception a bit early to have an emergency filling placed in one of her back teeth,  according to a roundup of the day’s itinerary.

At the time of this trip, the royal yacht was just five years old. After traveling more than a million nautical miles, the floating palace was retired from royal service in 1997. It later became a tourist attraction in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Ilma launches in September 2024

The ‘hotel yacht’ is one of the most competitive and exciting new areas of luxury travel. The Ritz-Carlton was the first to market with the launch of The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection ’s first yacht Evrima in 2022, with other leading luxury hospitality brands including Four Seasons and Aman quickly announcing plans to follow suit. Now, Ritz-Carlton is gearing up for the inaugural voyage of its second yacht Ilma in September 2024, a move that it hopes will further solidify its place as the leader of the luxury hotel yacht race.

Ahead of the launch, two of the project’s leading lights, Tina Edmundson, President, Luxury at Marriott International, and Jim Murren, CEO, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, reveal everything we need to know about the new launch. They also reveal exclusive insights on why Marriott chose to branch into the yachting sector in the first place, their learnings from their first years on the water, and what differentiates their yachts from a cruise ship – and indeed a private superyacht.

Jim Murren, Toto Wolff and Tina Edmundson onboard Evrima

Why did Marriott decide to enter the yachting space – and why now?

Tina Edmundson: We have actually been talking about this space for a decade. It’s interesting because I've had many people ask, ‘is this a post Covid thing?’, when actually, it's not. Covid has not caused new behavior, it's accelerated behavior. What we’re seeing with our customers is that people have changed their mindsets. They want experiences over things and the yachting experience is coveted because it’s about removing friction from people's stays and having this all-inclusive, amazing experience. We know that they are looking for these experiences outside of hotels so our goal is to keep them in our ecosystem. We want to be able to provide all of those types of experiences for our customers.

Odds of biden dropping out suddenly soar on $230 million trump bet, who has called for biden to drop out of race: democrat officials craig, quigley, moulton and more.

How does the experience you’re offering stand aside from a traditional cruise and what influences have you taken from the superyacht industry?

Jim Murren: There’s a distinct difference between a cruise ship and a yacht. Cruise ships cater to a vast array of people who love that type of experience; they love having segmented times to eat, casinos, entertainment and theme park-like experiences all in one inclusive environment. That's not us. We took our inspiration from private yachts and, working closely with Ritz-Carlton, we created a hospitality experience that’s very different than what you would get on a cruise. Look at the variety of restaurants that we have, the quality levels that we deliver, the type of entertainment that we bring to bear and the amount of service that we bring – we have a one-of-a-kind crew-to -passenger ratio that no-one else has in our space.

And with size of our yacht, we get to go into ports that most cruise ships can't go into, so we can create much more interesting, educationally and culturally motivated itineraries that the discerning guest is really looking for.

What can Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection offer that a private yacht cannot?

JM: One of our owners, who's a billionaire, has a yacht. He said that a lot of his friends can certainly charter a yacht for $250,000 to $1 million a week, but they don't get the social experience that you can get here on Evrima . If guests are coming with a group of people, or they’re multi-generational family, they want to meet like-minded folks who also have that adventurous ‘can do’ spirit, and you can't do that on a private yacht. It's not so much a value proposition for them, it's more of a lifestyle decision that they've made.

How have you avoided falling into the cruise ship trap?

TE: I think it starts with the size of the vessel. We only have 149 suites so the highest number of people we can have 300 people. The space-to-guess ratio is very generous, so even when we're full, it never feels dense. The facilities are really different, too; there are hundreds of quiet spots where you can tuck away with a book or your computer anywhere on the boat. The service and culture of Ritz-Carlton is critically important and, in my mind, quite a differentiating factor. And then there’s all the other amenities on top, from the quality of food to the wine. It feels different.

Evrima has been sailing for a year now and Ilma is preparing for her maiden voyage. What have you learnt in the first year of sailings and what’s new on the second yacht?

TE: We’ve learnt that people are looking for some form of entertainment in the evening. We don’t have casinos or an auditorium, but we still have to provide entertainment, and so we’ve started hosting different types of musicians and magicians. It’s different to what you’d find on a cruise but very fitting to the kind of customer we have.

JM: As part of the entertainment program, we’re going to embed into the itinerary intimate entertainment experiences that make a cruise more interesting. We'll have guest lecturers, naturalists and professors come on board. We'll have celebrities come on and talk about their lives. Tina mentioned music and magic and there's some incredibly sophisticated, elegant entertainment that can be done in an intimate setting.

People are also looking for great onshore experiences too. We can tuck our yacht into a nice little port and make sure we have an onshore experience that enriches their cultural identity. A lot of the big cruise companies create their own artificial environment – they own their own islands and have their own entertainment. What we're trying to create is a more authentic experience.

What are you most excited for on the upcoming itineraries?

JM: Next year, we're taking Ilma up into the Baltic, which will be really exciting. And then with Luminara, she'll be sailing in Asia Pacific. She'll be up in Alaska, we'll be going to Japan and Singapore. For our guests, which for now at least are a majority North American, this is the first time they'll be experiencing many of these locations. We’ve become the vessel of opportunity and enlightenment for people in North America to experience the Mediterranean or Asia Pacific, and we take that responsibility seriously. That's why we want to educate people.

The owner's suite on Ilma

Beyond planned sailings, the collection is available for private charters – an example of which was the Mercedes buy-out of Evrima during the 2024 Monaco F1 Grand Prix. What percentage will be bookable sailings versus private charters?

JM: For Evrima , it's about 10% private charter. This is a pioneering effort and a new industry segment, so I would imagine that over time, Evrima could get more and more charter business. She’s the perfect size for a corporate charter or a celebrity weddings and other big events. I could see, over time, close to 40-50% of sailings on Ilma being charter, particularly as we grow our fleet.

A static hotel is very different from a ‘floating’ one. What were the biggest challenges and opportunities you discovered while working on the Group’s first yacht project?

TE: The main learning from a hotel perspective is when the guest is on the vessel, you have to provide everything, so you've got to have a lot of forethought about their expectations or needs. Part of the Ritz-Carlton culture is that we should never say ‘no’; you’ve got to provide guests with alternatives. And sometimes, if you're on sea, like you can't physically do that, so it’s about being very thoughtful about what our guests looking for. F&B is really important because again, when you’re in a static hotel, you can get in your car, or you call an Uber go wherever. But here, you have to provide everything.

What's interesting is we are taking learnings from the yachting experience and we will open our first Ritz-Carlton all-inclusive in Costa Rica in 2026. We've never been in the space and in that type of environment, so it goes both ways.

Hands up if you’re ready to be dazzled! From a ceremony structure designed to float on water to a jaw-dropping reception room with flowers blooming from every service, we’re swooning over every bit of this wedding. If you can believe it, that’s just the beginning. Julia Kaptelova artfully shot every detail, like the ballet performance guests were treated to and snow falling from the ceiling for the first dance! Prepare to be amazed and take a visit to the full gallery .

From About You Decor … Our design is a symbol of dawn and a distant endless horizon. Ahead is a long, happy life without any borders. An international couple, Pavel and Cherry, met in London and have been walking together for many years.

big zip yacht

From the Bride, Cherry… My husband and I we decided to have our summer wedding in Moscow because the city is where his roots are. As we knew we were going to have the other wedding ceremony in China, we wanted our Moscow one to be very personal and intimate. We’ve known each other since we were fourteen, together with many of our friends whom we’ve also known for a decade.

big zip yacht

I didn’t want to walk down the aisle twice so the plausibility of my request quickly came into discussion. The open pontoon stage was constructed in order to facilitate the bridal entrance on water, although there were concerns about safety as the last thing we wanted was probably a drowned bride before she could get on stage, picture that! I have to say on that day it wasn’t easy to get on the pontoon stage from the boat, in my long gown and high heels. Luckily my bridesmaids still noticed even though they stood the furthest from me on the stage, and helped me out without prior rehearsal. My girls could just tell whenever I needed a hand or maybe they were just so used to my clumsiness. Who knows 😂

We all love our photographer Julia! She’s so talented and her style is so unique. Our beloved host Alex is exceptional who made everyone laugh and cry. It was truly a blessing to have so many kind and beautiful souls on our big day. Thank you all!

I’m still not convinced this Moscow wedding, captured to perfection by  Sonya Khegay , isn’t actually an inspiration session—it’s just  that breathtaking. From the beautiful Bride’s gorgeous lace wedding dress and flawless hair and makeup to the pretty pastel color palette and stunning ceremony and reception spaces, this wedding is almost too good to be true. Do yourself a favor and see it all in The Vault now!

From Sonya Khegay … It was the last day of April and still very cold in the morning. The weather forecast wasn’t pleasing and no one expected that the sun would come out, but miracles happen and light rain gave way to the warm rays.

I love how all the details went together, you could feel the harmony in everything throughout the entire wedding day from the morning until the fireworks.

A gentle look of the bride, elegant but so airy and unique decor, the fresh and light atmosphere of early spring and, of course, true happiness in the eyes. My heart becomes so warm from these memories, it is always a pleasure to see the birth of a new family of two loving hearts.

You really can’t go wrong with simple: a beautiful Bride , perfectly pretty petals , loved ones all around. But add in an amazing firework show  to cap off the night and simple just became downright extraordinary. Captured by Lena Elisseva , with assistance by  Katya Butenko , this rustic Russian celebration is simply fantastic. See it all in the Vault right here !

From Lena Eliseeva Photo …  This cozy and warm summer wedding of gorgeous Natalia and Anton was in the middle of June. The young couple decided to organize their wedding themselves, and the day was very personal and touching. I am absolutely in love with rustic outdoor weddings, and this one is my favourite because of the free and easy atmosphere.

All the decor excluding the bride’s bouquet was made by a team of ten friends of the bride and groom. And it was charming – a light and beautiful arch, eco-style polygraphy and succulents, candy-bar with caramel apples and berries – sweet joys of summer.

At the end of ceremony the guests tossed up white handkerchiefs embroidered by Natalia’s own hands.

The most touching moment was the happy eyes of the groom’s grandmother, the most estimable person on the wedding. And the fireworks were a bright end to that beautiful day.

These photos from Lena Kozhina are so stunningly beautiful – as in you can’t help but stop and stare – it’s hard to believe it’s real life. But these pics are proof of this gorgeous Bride and her handsome Groom’s celebration at Moscow’s Fox Lodge , surrounded by vibrant colors and breathtaking blooms . Oh, and the idea of prepping for your Big Day outside in the sun ? Brilliant. See more bright ideas right here !

From Lena Kozhina … When we met with the couple for the first time, we immediately paid attention to Dima’s behavior towards Julia. There was a feeling of tenderness and awe, and we immediately wanted to recreate this atmosphere of love, care and warmth on their Big Day.

Later, when we had chosen a green meadow and an uncovered pavilion overlooking a lake as the project site, it only highlighted a light summer mood with colorful florals and a great number of natural woods. The name of the site is Fox Lodge and peach-orange color, as one of the Bride’s favorites, set the tone for the whole design – from the invitations, in which we used images of fox cubs to elements of serving guest tables and other decorative elements with the corresponding bright accents.

The Red Sox are for real — and they’re deserving of trade deadline help | Cotillo

MIAMI — Hopefully while sailing around on a yacht somewhere waiting to dock for fireworks, John Henry had a chance to glance at NESN on Thursday. If he did, he would have seen a Red Sox team worth investing in.

Against all odds and preseason prognostications (hand up!), the Red Sox are in the mix — and they’re for real. Their dramatic, 12-inning win over the Marlins on Thursday put them at eight games over .500 for the first time this season and continued a couple of very encouraging patterns . Boston’s fifth road sweep of the year put the club at 27-16 on the road so far this season. They’re 18-10 since June 1 and will find themselves in a playoff spot — and within just 5 ½ games of the Yankees when the teams meet in the Bronx on Friday night.

“It’s a group that, they really like each other,” said manager Alex Cora. “We need to find the magic at home and play better there because if we do that, we’ll be fine. We will. Because what we’re doing on the road is really special.”

With just under four weeks to go before the July 30 deadline, the Red Sox have shown they’re worthy of the front office believing in them enough to be buyers. Would a deadline sale of veterans like Kenley Jansen, Tyler O’Neill and Nick Pivetta (who increased his stock with an excellent start Thursday) set the team up in an even better position for what already looks like a bright future? Sure. But as the last few seasons proved, teams only have so many chances at postseason runs. As an ex-player, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow should recognize that. And barring a complete collapse over the final 16 games before the deadline — including matchups against the bottom-feeding A’s and Rockies — the Red Sox will be in a spot where it will make sense to add.

“There’s still a long ways to go before the deadline but we’re playing really well,” said outfielder and clubhouse leader Rob Refsnyder. “Obviously, it’s Breslow’s decision and a front office decision but we’ve just got to keep winning series. I think Breslow has already shown he has gone out and gotten guys like Dom (Smith) and (Garrett) Cooper. He’s willing to make moves fast. He could have just stood pat and not done anything. He’s already shown the willingness to keep improving the roster.”

Earlier this week, Cora said that the group is not trying to win to pressure the front office into buying , instead noting that the intrinsic state of being a big league player or coach means wanting wins at all times. Still, the dial has been turned up on Breslow, and on a larger scale, a Henry-led ownership that clearly believed its team wasn’t worth going all-in on this winter. But these Red Sox have won, and proven themselves, in spite of ownership, not with its full backing.

To really contend in October, the Red Sox will need another starter — a team official acknowledged this week that asking Pivetta, Brayan Bello, Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford to keep shouldering such a massive load was unrealsitic — and they could benefit from a right-handed bat, too. The bullpen will get stronger when Liam Hendriks returns, possibly to form an elite 1-2-3 punch with Jansen and Chris Martin. And the looming return of Triston Casas will make a surprisingly productive lineup even stronger.

That shouldn’t be enough, though. Cora keeps using the term “get greedy” to describe how his players should be thinking. Breslow should take note.

“Triston was arguably top three left-handed hitters in baseball in the second half,” Refsnyder said. “That’s gonna be a big boost when he comes back. Liam, that speaks for itself. It’s kinda like we’re getting guys at the deadline but that’s all above our paygrade. We’re just supposed to come to the field every day and play baseball. If we keep improving and keep winning series, we’ll put ourselves right in the hunt of it.”

Thursday’s win, played in front of a split crowd of 20,539 at loanDepot Park, was one of Boston’s best of the season. There was the dominant performance of Pivetta, who took a no-hitter into the seventh. There was the heroic game-saving throw by Jarren Duran to nail the potential game-winning run at home plate in the ninth, which Cora called the “biggest” of the outfielder’s career. Speed and athleticism, as it has so often over the first three months of the year, shown bright, too. Even before putting the ball in play and creating chaos on the bases late, the Red Sox took an early 2-0 lead by putting pressure on the bases when David Hamilton and Tyler O’Neill executed two double steals that led to runs.

“They’re young and athletic. We can do a lot of stuff,” Cora said. “We almost stole this game in nine innings with Hammy stealing third twice and us putting the ball in play.”

The Red Sox were dealt a series of big blows late in the game with usually steady relievers Justin Slaten, Brennan Bernardino and Zack Kelly all helping to surrender leads in big spots. But by continuing to fight in an extra-innings climate that suits their style of play perfectly, the Sox were able to walk away victorious.

“It’s extremely entertaining,” Pivetta said. “It’s a character (trait) of how hard these guys work every single day. They show up. We’re never out of baseball games from Pitch 1 to the end.”

That the Red Sox have exceeded expectations and established an electric brand of baseball through 86 games shouldn’t be enough in the eyes of those running them. That they’re more talented and deeper than a year ago isn’t enough, either. Teams get hot in October and either win it all or get close. The belief in the clubhouse — which is starting to seep beyond the walls of the room — is that the Red Sox are legit and not susceptible to prolonged slumps because of improved starting pitching and a fast brand of play. It’s time for that same level of belief to climb upstairs at Fenway.

“I think it’s a really good team,” said Refsnyder. “You don’t see many glaring holes. We have more depth this year ... I think the roster’s pretty strong and it’s only getting stronger.
