Disneyland Haunted Mansion Closure 2024 – Dates, Why It’s Closed, What’s Coming

The Disneyland Haunted Mansion now has a closing date for early 2024. Typically the Disneyland Haunted Mansion closes at this time of year to remove the Nightmare Before Christmas-themed Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay from the attraction but this year the closure is related to bigger construction coming.

A few months ago Disney revealed new details about a big expansion of the Disneyland Haunted Mansion area to redevelop the area around the Haunted Mansion attraction to improve guest flow, add in an elevator for wheelchair users to exit the attraction, and to add in a new store. You can read more about this Haunted Mansion construction below.

Disney has now revealed when the Haunted Mansion attraction will close for this redevelopment of the area around the Haunted Mansion attraction.

In this planning guide:

Disneyland Haunted Mansion Closure

Disneyland has now released on the refurbishment calendar that the Haunted Mansion will close starting on January 22, 2024. The attraction will remain as the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay until this date. That means that the attraction will remain open a couple of additional weeks after the official end of the Holidays at Disneyland celebration which is on January 7, 2024.

The Haunted Mansion closing date is listed on the Disneyland calendar and we confirmed it with a Disneyland spokesperson.

The “it's a small world” Holiday overlay also has to be removed during this period.

With the closure of the Haunted Mansion, two of the major attractions in this corner of the park will be closed. There is still no Splash Mountain reopening date set for when the ride will become Tiana's Bayou Adventure . Disney just confirmed that the Tiana's Bayou Adventure attraction will not open until “later in 2024” at Disneyland so we can expect to see this area with the two attractions closed for at least a little while.

That leads us to wonder…

When Will Disneyland Haunted Mansion Reopen?

The Disneyland Haunted Mansion does not currently have a reopening date set for the attraction . When the news of the changes coming to the area around the attraction that we detail below were first announced we actually assumed that the attraction would keep operating normally or largely normally with a few interruptions throughout the year while the construction happened around the attraction. It's amazing what they can accomplish with construction walls!

Typically the Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction closes every year in early January around the least day of the holiday season as we detail in our Disneyland refurbishments and closures article.

While it could have been that this was just a normal closure for the Haunted Mansion to remove the holiday overlay, we now have the further context that this closure relates back to the announcement made about the work starting on the changes to the exterior of the attraction in 2024. We don't yet know the length of the closure coming in January but if the attraction is going to be closed for the entire time that these changes are coming to the park, it could be quite a long closure that stretches further into the year. Some of the changes, which we'll share a little more on below won't be quick and will be structural changes made to the attraction building.

What we do know is that when Disneyland shared all the 2024 special events they mentioned that Disneyland Halloween would include “uniquely themed attractions” so we can assume that the work will be all done in time for the August 23, 2023 beginning of Disneyland Halloween 2024 .

What is the Haunted Mansion Construction Coming to Disneyland?

Disney previously announced that Haunted Mansion will be getting some new additions that will “build on the story and lore” of the beloved attraction. The construction during the Haunted Mansion closure will add an expanded outdoor queue and a new retail shop adjacent to the attraction's exit. Construction will also introduce new additions to improve the accessibility of these areas, including an elevator exit from the attraction for guests with disabilities.

The expansion will connect to the local legend of the Haunted Mansion being first built by a prosperous sea captain and new gardens inspired by Master Gracey, Madame Leota, and the one-eyed cat. The gardens will feature unique elements like a water fountain, gazebo, themed statuary and landscaping, and more. The pet cemetery and horse-drawn funeral hearse will still be featured. You can see the concept art for this outdoor queue area above!

In addition to the queue expansion during the Haunted Mansion closure, a new retail shop inspired by Madame Leota will be added. The shop will be the “carriage house of the mansion” belonging to Leota, with more details to come in the future. You can see the concept art for the shop below:

There will also be enhancements made to the plaza adjacent to Tiana's Palace to create a “new, elegant park-like setting” that will be a place to rest and enjoy live entertainment. You can see the concept art for this area below:

Importantly for the construction closure timeline for Haunted Mansion, they will also be adding an elevator to the exit of the attraction. This could cause the longest part of the closure as it is structural and work could end up block the attraction from running.

We are looking forward to seeing these new additions added to the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland!

New Haunted Mansion Grounds Expansion, Retail Shop Coming to Disneyland Resort in 2024

Kelsey Lynch, Public Relations Manager, Disneyland Resort

by Kelsey Lynch , Public Relations Director, Disneyland Resort

The stately grounds of the Haunted Mansion will expand with a spirited metamorphosis at Disneyland Resort next year. In 2024, the additions will build on the story and lore of the Haunted Mansion and include an expanded outdoor queue to immerse guests in enhanced theming, as well as a new retail shop adjacent to the attraction’s exit.

Local legend suggests the manor known today as the Haunted Mansion was first built by a prosperous sea captain. To this day, the mansion’s staff faithfully maintains the happy haunting grounds. The expanded queue will tie into these stories and more, including new gardens inspired by Master Gracey, Madame Leota and the one-eyed cat.

Rendering of updates coming to the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland park

Each of the gardens will feature unique elements ranging from a water fountain and gazebo to themed statuary and landscaping. In fact, guests will be able to see a new greenhouse where the groundskeepers for the Haunted Mansion grow their plants. The pet cemetery and horse-drawn funeral hearse will continue to reside on the attraction’s grounds.

Rendering of updates coming to the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland park

And speaking of Madame Leota, we felt it was time to continue her presence beyond the walls of the Haunted Mansion with an all-new retail shop. This carriage house of the mansion, belonging to Leota, will be a standalone shop that we are just “dying” to tell you more about in the future.

Rendering of updates coming to Disneyland park

We also will make enhancements to the plaza adjacent to Tiana’s Palace. This area is one that holds a lot of memories and history, and a new, elegant park-like setting will be a place to relax and enjoy the ambiance and live entertainment under the shade of new and historic trees.

Construction on these additions will begin in January 2024. We will take the opportunity to help improve the accessibility of these areas which includes a new elevator exit from the Haunted Mansion for guests with disabilities.

We look forward to sharing more about the final arrangements early next year. For now, consider this dismaying observation: the objects found in Leota’s garden will be inspired by her incantation!

Destinations: Disneyland Resort , Disneyland Park

So I’m guessing- 4 months? Also the fountain and trees of Magnolia Park are lovely, even when the queue has to go through them on peak days. I can’t see why they can’t just stay as is. What’s wrong with simplicity?

I’ll work there

Please leave the trees and fountain if possible. I love walking around New Orleans Square because it reminds me of Jackson Square in NewOrleans. Some of the areas in the park were inspired by real places, it’s neat to keep it true to that original vision.

Rather than blowing budget on queue lines and shops, it’s time to bring the Country Bears back to Anaheim. Put the new and improved Pooh’s Hunny Hunt in Fantasyland and return the Country Bears back to their original hilltop theater.

It is so sad that you have to do this in January. Why couldn’t you have given us advance notice that you were going to do this. So if you are going to do this in January, then this means we can’t see the attraction the way it was ment to be at all anymore. What with the Nightmare before Christmas overlay being till after the Holidays. So then this must mean when “Nightmare” is over, you intend to closing down HM till after this construction change. I understand the necessity for the ADA accessibly, but why do you have to make all these other changes? Why is it necessary to continue to make all these politically correct changes that changes Walt’s dream like you did with “Pirates” and other attractions. So I guess I will never get to see Walt’s HM ever again.

But the ride won’t close right? We come out for the first time ever in February and we’ll be devastated if we can’t ride it!

RE: “We will take the opportunity to help improve the accessibility of these areas which includes a new elevator exit from the Haunted Mansion for guests with disabilities”. This is wonderful news, HOWEVER there really should be at least 1 wheelchair accessible ride vehicle where a guest may stay in their manual wheelchair to enjoy the Haunted Mansion. The Clamshell ride vehicles of Ariel’s Undersea Adventure at DCA are extremely similar to the Doom Buggies, so PLEASE!!! Everyone cannot transfer and therefore will never be able to experience this beloved attraction 🙁

Well, they say both new and old trees, so it sounds like not all the trees would be leaving (or… leafing… ha; I’m so sorry) so much as the planters and fence work around them to open up the area. I’m hoping they can leave the fountain; I see they’ve moved one to the queue, but the fountain is a lovely place. There’s a fair bit more space between the train station and the walkways around the Rivers of America than these concept sketches suggest.

I will say, though, there’s a couple things I’m truly excited about. One is the return of the live entertainment by the restaurant. I remember even as a kid just sitting near there and listening to those bands play… I loved it. It’s a part of the New Orleans Square atmosphere that’s been missing, at least for me, when I’ve been there.

Next is the extended queue/story. Something we lack in Disneyland that Disney World’s Haunted Mansion and Disneyland Paris’s Phantom Manor (which has twice the ride, actually, and a very different story) have in spades. We actually used to have a bit more detail in the form of the fast pass ticket area, but it was just pretty and its gone. Getting more depth to the ride (and there is a lot out there to pull on; they already mentioned Captain Gore in the blog post. I suggest the channel Offhand Disney if you’d like to learn more) and it’s background is exciting! Especially the cat. I’ve been pointing out the cat to my family every time. In any case, I’m open to it. Hopefully the rude stays open; the queue will probably snake outside in the meantime which is nothing new for them.

I hate to be a whiner but I don’t like the removal of the fountain either. It’s just that I’ve seen Disneyland make some very bad, so-called “improvements” in the last decade. With the exception of Main Street’s lackluster indoor Carnation Cafe, the bungles all seem to be in New Orleans Square.

I get the HM queue changes are to improve ADA compliance, so hopefully these changes in addition are plussed and not halfhearted minuses.

Please don’t remove the trees. Lots of shade also needs to be added all throughout the HM queue. I’m going to mourn the loss of Magnolia Gardens. I’m assuming you are removing the fountain. There are street signs in New Orleans Square. Can we keep a basic feel of Magnolia Gardens and New Orleans? I also worry about the transition from the exit of HM (what I assume will become yet another gift shop, sigh, and the start of Tiana. And how this all goes into the shrinking Critter Country and Pooh. Transitions are important.

I SURE HOPE this is not going to be another McMansionland Playground like Walt Disney World’s noisy, atrocious mess of rejected ideas tossed out by the original Imagineers (who knew what they were doing).

The exterior of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion is a *major* part of the attraction’s story. It’s supposed to be a stately home that has only a somewhat eerie quality. That way, the manor’s tale can unfold and its spirited inhabitants reveal themselves in chapters/stages—INSIDE. Any true storyteller knows that you DON’T put the finale before the prelude. That’s why Walt (a genius) DID NOT want ANY ghosts (such as Madam Leota) outside.

So, instead of Disney Parks thinking with their cash registers, how about using their creative minds and building the Museum Of The Weird? Every Haunted Mansion fan wants it (as did Walt). And it doesn’t have to be a static, typical museum. For example, animate the place. Make exhibits change on their own. Let display tables rise and objects move. It can be as unique and unusual as Rolly Crump, the late, great, brilliant Imagineer who’s already laid a good portion of the groundwork.

As for retail, the rare facility’s “egress” can always funnel foolish mortals into the Museum Gift Shop of unique oddities and ghoulishly delightful merch. The whole thing would be far more amusing and successful than yet another typical, Disney Park themed store. And the ghosts can stay where they belong: indoors and out of any spoiler-laden queue.

PLEASE, consider this much more desirable alternative.

Can you give us a little more practical information? Will the ride be closed during all of this? If so, how long do you expect te ride to be closed? I booked my trip last month for may 2024. Flying from the other side of the world to finally experience The Haunted Mansion. This news without any more details has me a little stressed out.

Please do not remove the fountain between the mansion and Tiana’s Palace.

Will the Mansion be closed? I was planning attending Disneyland in March. Ever since we began dating in 2011, going together to Disneyland and visiting the Mansion has always been our dream. Sadly, he developed Kidney Failure and had been in dialysis… until I donated him a kidney and everything improved, and now we want to make our dream come true. But as much as we are happy for the changes coming to the Mansion, we are anxious about the time it will take for them to materialize and the timing of our trip.

Kelly: To be fair, in Ken Anderson’s early plans for what would be The Haunted Mansion in the late ’50’s, there was going to be a gift shop right at the end of the attraction (the first time it was ever considered).

I’m EXCITED! Ignore all the whining and complaining! You can’t please people who think the world revolves around them. Super excited!!

Please don’t remove ANY of the trees!!! 🌲 😢

Hopefully they’ll allow access to the hidden pet sematary again..

How long is the project expected to take? I am currently planning my next trip (first time since 2018) and seeing as Haunted Mansion is in my top 5 rides I really want to make sure it is open during my trip.

Best. News. Ever!!!! Can’t wait!! 👏

Looks great! Very glad that the area is receiving some attention.

Any word on how long Haunted Mansion will be down for? Hopefully it will be open before summer 2024? Also, does the addition of the exit elevator mean no more moving speedramp at the end of the ride, or will that remain?

This is so interesting! Will this renovation affect the DAS entrance or will it remain the same? Thanks so much! Looking forward to all the new changes!

This is amazing! Quick question – will the attraction be closed during construction?

Just another money grab. It is bad enough the merch is the same in every shop- mass produced junk. We visit often but stopped buying any merch over 2 years ago. Ripping out the beautiful fountain in that area to add seating for Tiana’s Palace. How about actually adding another attraction in critter country or by galaxy’s edge instead of a retheme?

Will the HM Ride be closed during this time or will there just be an alternate entrance into the ride during renovations?

I hope someone is considering additional or enhanced restrooms in New Orleans Square.

Please tell me you are not removing the beautiful fountain between the haunted mansion and Tiana’s

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

The upcoming closure of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion for an extended refurbishment to expand the backstory, reconfigure the queue and add a retail shop leaves many questions unanswered for fans of the beloved dark ride eager to reconvene with the 999 happy haunts.

Among the many unknowns, there’s one thing we know for certain. The last day to ride Haunted Mansion Holiday this season will be Jan. 21 with construction beginning Jan. 22 on the grounds of the attraction, according to Disneyland officials.

ALSO SEE: Haunted Mansion at 50: Decades of delays and distractions nearly derailed Disneyland’s venerable dark ride

During the closure, Disneyland will enhance the outdoor queue, install a new accessibility elevator for wheelchair users exiting the ride and add a new retail shop at the attraction’s exit.

Walt Disney Imagineering plans to build on the lore of the Haunted Mansion in the new garden queue with an expanded backstory involving Madame Leota, Master Gracey and a prosperous sea captain — who all play key roles in Disney’s latest “Haunted Mansion” live-action movie.

That’s what we know at the moment. Let’s take a closer look at five unanswered questions about the Haunted Mansion extended refurbishment .

1) When will the Haunted Mansion reopen?

Disneyland isn’t saying just yet. The Anaheim theme park hasn’t even narrowed the reopening date to 2024.

Disneyland will share more Haunted Mansion construction details early next year.

Why hasn’t Disneyland narrowed the reopening date to spring, summer or fall of 2024?

In part because construction has not yet begun. Digging at Disneyland can present a host of problems that might affect the construction schedule. Some of the pipes and conduits underneath the park are as old as Disneyland and others haven’t been unearthed for decades.

Another reason Disneyland hasn’t put a finishing date on Haunted Mansion construction is the uproar it might cause. Which brings us to our next question.

2) Will the Haunted Mansion return in holiday mode?

Transforming the Haunted Mansion back and forth between classic and holiday modes takes considerable effort .

Leaving the attraction in holiday mode during construction saves time and money.

Disneyland has pushed the launch of Halloween Time to Aug. 23 in 2024 — the earliest start ever to the holiday season.

ALSO SEE: Everything Disneyland changed in the Haunted Mansion and the backstory behind it all

Bringing the Haunted Mansion back in August would allow Disneyland to leave the ride in holiday mode during construction — but would likely enrage fans who can’t imagine being without their favorite attraction for seven months.

It would be tough to justify leaving The Nightmare Before Christmas holiday overlay in place if the Haunted Mansion emerges from construction in spring or summer.

Disneyland could gin up a Halloween in June or Christmas in July storyline to justify the decision — but fans of the classic ride would likely revolt. Which brings us to our next question.

3) Will the classic version of Haunted Mansion return before 2025?

You’ll need four hands to count the number of months fans will be without the classic version of Haunted Mansion if Disneyland brings back the ride in holiday mode after construction.

The Mansion faithful may have to go without the classic version of the ride for 16 months — from Sept. 1, 2023 to early January 2025. Let that sink in for a minute and you quickly understand why Disneyland hasn’t put a return date on the Haunted Mansion.

Any firm date for the end of construction raises a host of unappealing questions. Including this next one.

4) Does Critter Country become a dead zone?

The Haunted Mansion sits next door to Splash Mountain — which is also under construction .

The transformation into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is expected to last until late 2024.

That means the two major attractions will be sitting behind construction scrims for the first half of 2024 or longer.

Add in the Mark Twain Riverboat sitting at the Pelican Landing dock during an extended refurbishment and you’ve got a warren of construction walls at the border of New Orleans Square and Critter Country.

ALSO SEE: This Haunted Mansion Airbnb is just like sleeping inside the Disneyland ride — If you dare

Bringing down one major ride for a brief or extended period has a ripple effect on the nearby attractions and the rest of the park. Bringing down two major draws right next to each other creates a doughnut hole that will likely put pressure on the entire west side of the park.

The rides most likely to suffer the greatest impact: Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones Adventure, Jungle Cruise, Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. Indy and Rise already have issues with downtime. More pressure isn’t likely to improve things.

Expect long lines at Pirates, Jungle Cruise and maybe even Falcon starting in late January.

5) Is Disneyland making any storytelling changes to the Haunted Mansion?

Yes and no.

Disneyland officials say the Haunted Mansion backstory that guests know and love will remain the same.

Making any significant changes would likely enrage Mansion diehards who consider the ride’s backstory sacrosanct. But Imagineering is tinkering with the Haunted Mansion story around the edges.

The expanded Haunted Mansion queue featuring a fountain, gazebo, statues, greenhouse and a garden will lean into storylines involving Madame Leota, Master Gracey and a prosperous sea captain.

Leota’s carriage house next door to the mansion will serve as the new exit through the gift shop when the Haunted Mansion returns from its extended refurbishment — whenever that is.

Leota, the Gracey clan and the mariner ghost played key roles in the “Haunted Mansion” live-action film released by Disney this summer and now streaming on Disney+.

Could there be a movie tie-in or a set up for a sequel? Disney incorporated Jack Sparrow into the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Would they dare mess with the Haunted Mansion?

Fans will be watching very closely — and waiting impatiently for the return of the ride.

Reopening Date

Disneyland has not yet provided a reopening date for “Haunted Mansion,” or a timeline for the work being done. When we hear of a date, we’ll let you know.

However, D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event will be coming to Anaheim August 9-11, 2024, bringing thousands of Disney fans to the area, so I’m sure they plan to have one of their most popular attractions open for that. Perhaps even debuting the changes during the event.

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

Disneyland plans to build on the lore of the Haunted Mansion with an expanded backstory involving Madame Leota, Master Gracey, a prosperous sea captain and a one-eyed cat following the summer release of Disney’s new “Haunted Mansion” live-action movie.

Disneyland will close the Haunted Mansion in January to begin construction on the outdoor queue enhancements and will share more about the reopening of the attraction at a later date, according to Disneyland officials. The work will also include a new accessibility elevator for wheelchair users exiting the ride and a new retail shop at the attraction’s exit.

Disneyland’s announcement comes just a few days before the Haunted Mansion Holiday version of the attraction returns on Friday, Sept. 1. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” holiday overlay traditionally remains in place through early January — when construction will start on the Haunted Mansion queue.

Disneyland will share more Haunted Mansion construction details early next year. The Haunted Mansion backstory that guests know and love will remain the same, according to Disneyland officials.

The expanded Haunted Mansion queue will feature a fountain, gazebo, statues, greenhouse and a garden inspired by Madame Leota’s incantation. The existing pet cemetery and horse-drawn funeral hearse will remain on the attraction grounds.

The queue construction will affect the plaza between the Haunted Mansion and Tiana’s Palace — a new restaurant replacing the French Market in New Orleans Square on Sept. 7.

The new park between Tiana’s Palace and the Haunted Mansion will offer shaded seating to watch live music on the two-sided outdoor stage envisioned for the restaurant.

The retail store at the Haunted Mansion’s exit will be themed as Madame Leota’s carriage house. Disney’s Magic Kingdom has a Memento Mori gift shop near the entrance to the Florida theme park’s version of the Haunted Mansion.

The new backstory for the expanded Haunted Mansion queue suggests a possible movie tie-in with the “Haunted Mansion” film that opened in theaters this summer and is expected to arrive on the Disney+ streaming service later this year.

“Local legend suggests the manor known today as the Haunted Mansion was first built by a prosperous sea captain,” according to the Disney Parks Blog. “The expanded queue will tie into these stories and more, including new gardens inspired by Master Gracey, Madame Leota and the one-eyed cat.”

The psychic medium Madame Leota, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, helps connect the living and the dead using her crystal ball in the new “Haunted Mansion” film.

Madame Leota’s spirit head appears in a crystal ball in the Seance Circle scene of the Haunted Mansion ride. She uses “sympathetic vibrations” to summon ghosts for a “swinging wake” in the mansion.

Returning a mariner ghost to the sea serves as a central plot point in the new “Haunted Mansion” film — and could serve as a storyline in any sequel.

An early script for the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland created by Walt Disney Imagineer Ken Anderson that ultimately went unused involved a character known as Captain Gore or Captain Blood whose family met their demise in the mansion.

The sea captain storyline would have created a narrative link between the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean attractions at Disneyland.

A one-eyed cat statue was added to the Portrait Gallery of the Haunted Mansion interior queue during a recent refurbishment. A Master Gracey tombstone in the Haunted Mansion garden pays tribute to Imagineer Yale Gracey, a special effects wizard who was instrumental in the development of the attraction.

The new “Haunted Mansion” film has earned $92 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo . The modest take by Hollywood standards might not warrant a sequel.

Is the Haunted Mansion Closing In Early 2023?

in Disneyland Resort

The Hitchhiking Ghosts at The Haunted Mansion, Ezra Beane, Professor Phineas Plump and Gus

“Make final arrangements now,” the iconic attraction “the Haunted Mansion” could close its doors early in 2023. When will it return?

The Haunted Mansion has been perhaps one of the most popular attractions at Disneyland Resort since its opening in 1969, making its way to Walt Disney World in 1971 and Tokyo Disney Resort in 1983; and arriving at Disneyland Paris as Phantom Manor  and Hong Kong Disneyland as Mystic Manor. Despite a former Disney Imagineer commenting that the attraction “could be retired soon,” millions of fans worldwide have enjoyed over 50 years of frightening fun while visiting the 999 happy haunts having a “swinging wake” and enjoying the light-spirited ambiance of the Mansion, making it no wonder why the Haunted Mansion remains a fan-favorite Disney attraction.

Haunted Mansion at night

While each version of the iconic attraction has its own unique touch, the impressive Mansion is particularly special at Disneyland Resort and Tokyo Disney Resort, as it welcomes a ghoulishly glorious sight every holiday season inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas,  as the attraction is adorned and deranged to become Haunted Mansion Holiday . This seasonal overlay usually arrives at Disneyland Resort in September, ahead of the fall celebrations at the Resort and in time to celebrate Halloween along with Jack Skellington — who’s decided to play Sandy Claws — Sally, Lock, Shock, Barrel, Oogie Boogie, Zero, and the citizens of Halloweentown.

While many fans, yours truly included, would love to see this seasonal overlay stay at Disneyland Park, Haunted Mansion Holiday usually closes its gates when the holidays end at Disneyland Resort. However, this may not be the case this year.

haunted mansion holiday at disneyland resort

The holiday celebrations officially end at Disneyland Resort on January 8, 2023, per Disneyland’s website , causing several iconic attractions, including “it’s a small world” Holiday, to shut down temporarily.

Last week, Disneyland’s website stated the same fate for Haunted Mansion Holiday, as the site didn’t show available times for the attraction starting January 9, 2023. However, the website has recently been updated and, as of this article’s publishing, states that Haunted Mansion Holiday will be available through January 17, 2023.

Screenshot from Haunted Mansion Holiday's calendar page on the official Disneyland Resort website

It is important to note that this information is currently available on the official Disneyland Resort website and is subject to change, as Disneyland officials can update it anytime.

Currently, there is no official information regarding the timeline for when the seasonal overlay will be removed from the California theme park and the attraction will reopen as the Haunted Mansion. Inside the Magic will keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Haunted Mansion Holiday Gingerbread

Jack Skellington’s extended stay at Disneyland Park surprises many, and thousands of fans will surely be overjoyed to learn that they can start 2023 with a visit to the Haunted Mansion Holiday.

Will you visit Disneyland Resort while Haunted Mansion Holiday is still available? Let us know in the comments below!

Disneyland's haunted mansion to close for construction.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Starting in January 2024, Disneyland 's popular Haunted Mansion attraction will be closed for construction.

We first told you about the news that the Haunted Mansion would be closed back in the summer for a spooky makeover.

The metamorphosis will "build on the story and lore of the Haunted Mansion and include an expanded outdoor queue to immerse guests in enhanced theming as well as a new retail shop," according to a post on the Disney Parks Blog.

Some of that "enhanced theming" will include ties to more stories and new gardens inspired by Master Gracey, Madame Leota and the one-eyed cat.

"Each of the gardens will feature unique elements ranging from a water fountain and gazebo to themed statuary and landscaping. In fact, guests will be able to see a new greenhouse where the groundskeepers for the Haunted Mansion grow their plants."

The pet cemetery and horse-drawn funeral hearse will continue to reside on the attraction’s grounds.

A new elevator exit will also be built from the Haunted Mansion for guests with disabilities.

Details about the new retail shop will be released at a later date.

Additionally, park officials said enhancements will be made to the plaza adjacent to Tiana's Palace.

"This area is one that holds a lot of memories and history, and a new, elegant park-like setting will be a place to relax and enjoy the ambiance and live entertainment under the shade of new and historic trees."

It’s time to say goodbye to our grim grinning friends at the Haunted Mansion, as Disney has announced the famous ride will close for refurbishment beginning early in 2023.

A Brief History of the Haunted Mansion

Since 1979, the Haunted Mansion dark ride has been tickling funny-bones of guests to Disney Parks, offering up not-so-scary humor combined with simple Imagineering tricks that have withstood the test of time.

The popular attraction has garnered so much lore and attention you’ll find two versions of it in the United States, one in Disneyland and the other at Walt Disney World Resort. Despite their popularity in the US, our favorite 999 happy haunts have also gone international, taking up residence in different lands outside of New Orleans Square and Liberty Square.

The Haunted Mansion isn’t just a simple haunted house attraction. The brainchild of Marc Davis and Claude Coats has set itself apart from other Disney dark rides in that, in its simplicity, it still amazes Disney park guests to this day.

Combined with a memorable theme by Xavier Atencio and a few movie projects that have popularized some characters like Hatbox Ghost , the ghost of Gracy Manor has become a massive part of the subculture found at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

A Journey Fit for the Afterlife

The ghoulish realm of Disney’s Haunted Mansion transports guests into a macabre world filled with eerie ghosts, haunting melodies, and a sense of mystery that will send shivers down your spine.

Located in New Orleans Square at Disneyland and Liberty Square at Walt Disney World, this iconic attraction has been captivating guests since its grand opening on August 9, 1969. Step inside and let the ghost host guide you through a chilling journey filled with supernatural surprises .

As you enter the mansion’s foreboding foyer, adorned with flickering candles and cobweb-covered chandeliers, the unsettling voice of the ghost host beckons you into the darkness. Once you board one of the omnimover “doom buggies,” your unsuspecting adventure is about to unfold.

The ghost host introduces you to the mansion’s most infamous resident, Master Gracey, who holds the key to the haunting tales within. Journey through the portrait corridor, where sinister paintings change before your eyes, revealing secrets of the mansion’s past.

Don’t forget to pay a visit to the ethereal Madame Leota, the disembodied medium who conjures spirits from beyond the grave. With her mystic incantations and hypnotic gaze, she adds an element of otherworldly enchantment to the Haunted Mansion.

As your doom buggy continues its relentless path, you will encounter a frightful gathering in the grand ballroom, where the spirits materialize to celebrate in spectral elegance. Marvel at the dancing ghosts, floating instruments, and the lively dueling duo of the piano and the organ.

Prepare for chilling encounters with the Hitchhiking Ghosts, mischievous spirits who are eager to find their way out of the mansion and into your hearts. Beware, for these playful phantoms may just decide to hitch a ride with you, adding a touch of spectral mischief to your journey.

Haunted Mansion Holiday

During the holiday season, the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland undergoes a transformation into the Haunted Mansion Holiday, a bewitching collaboration with Jack Skellington and his cast of characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). This seasonal overlay offers a delightfully spooky twist on the classic attraction, truly a must-see for any avid Disney fan.

NEW: The last day to experience Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland Park this holiday season will be on Jan. 21. The attraction will close for refurbishment starting Jan. 22 and work will begin on the reimagined grounds and expanded outdoor queue announced earlier this year. pic.twitter.com/fhdyxz6wUr — Scott Gustin (@ScottGustin) December 11, 2023

Currently in full swing, as Christmas quickly approaches, it seems that Disneyland already has a date in mind in which Jack Skellington, Oogie Boogie, and the rest of the Halloweentown gang will head back to where they came from. According to Scott Gustin on X, the last day to experience Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland this season will be January 21.

Closure for Refurbishment

Even more notable, the end of Haunted Mansion Holiday isn’t all the news that Scott shared with his social media followers. In addition to officially ending the festive season at the Haunted Mansion, Disneyland’s version of the attraction will close for refurbishment beginning January 22. Disneyland has not yet provided a reopening timeline for the extremely popular attraction.

Notably, Disney World’s version has experienced its own refurbishment this year, welcoming in the much anticipated Hatbox Ghost to the east-coast version of the attraction. Guests will note earlier downtimes in the year when many assumed that the popular animatronic was being added.

haunted mansion walkway refurbishment

Not to worry, as soon as we know more, we’ll let you know as soon as the ghastly mansion is back up and running. What we do know is that shorlty after Disneyland’s ride closes, work will begin to reimagine the grounds and expand the outdoor queue, which was annoucned eariler this year.

From its impressive architecture inspired by antebellum mansions to its captivating storytelling and immersive special effects, the Haunted Mansion is a testament to the unparalleled creativity and imagination of Walt Disney Imagineering. Whether it’s your first visit or your hundredth, this timeless attraction continues to enchant guests of all ages.

2024 Disneyland Refurbishment Calendar

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

This Disney California Adventure and Disneyland ride refurbishment calendar for 2024 lists temporary attraction closures so you know what won’t be operating before planning your vacation. Additionally, we offer info about reimagining projects that are underway to enhance experiences around the resort. ( Updated December 14, 2023 .)

While no one wants attraction closures during their visit, they are a necessary part of keeping Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in good condition, as routine maintenance, safety upgrades, and attraction improvements are all done during scheduled ride closures. Usually, there are only a handful of simultaneous closed rides, plus new attractions being built.

Having an idea of which attractions are closed at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure is important, but we recommend consulting our 2024 Disneyland Vacation Planning Guide for more comprehensive info. That covers everything from saving money on park tickets and hotels to where to eat, when to visit, and more.

In addition to scheduled attraction refurbs, unscheduled downtime can also occur during a visit. This usually only occurs for a few hours at a time, so if you find an attraction is closed during your visit to Disneyland Resort and it’s not listed below, it’s likely a temporary closure that will last a few hours. Check with nearby Cast Members to confirm.

Below is a schedule of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure refurbishments, when the closure starts, and when the refurbishment will conclude. To the extent that specific dates are not yet listed, those will be updated once Disneyland Resort provides precise start and/or end dates. The following day will be when the attraction is scheduled to reopen.

Here are the closure schedules for Disney California Adventure and Disneyland…

  • World of Color ONE – Closed January 8, 2024 to February 29, 2024

Several new refurbishments added to the calendar, as is common with the start of the winter off-season in the first week of January. In 2024, these are staggered slightly, which is likely a result of the Disneyland Half Marathon–Disney wants to maintain as much capacity as possible until after that runDisney weekend.

A few of these are water-based attractions, which typically close for refurbishment when the weather is cold and demand is low. The rest are mostly routine maintenance or the removal of seasonal overlays. Expect at least a few more closures to be added to the calendar for January and February 2024.

For now, the biggest closure is World of Color – ONE, which will go down at the end of the holiday season and return around the start of the Disney California Food & Wine Festival on March 1, 2024. What’s not yet known is which  World of Color will return, or even if it’ll be an all-new show. Our guess is that it’ll be the original World of Color, potentially with an  Inside Out 2  pre-show.

Next, let’s take a look at the 2024 Disneyland attraction closure calendar…

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

  • Adventureland Treehouse – Now open!
  • Astro Orbitor – Reopening Date TBD
  • Fantasmic – Paused until May 24, 2024
  • Haunted Mansion – Closed January 22, 2024 to TBD
  • “it’s a small world” – Closed January 7-17, 2024
  • Main Street Electrical Parade – Return Date Unknown
  • Mark Twain Riverboat – Reopening Date TBD
  • Sailing Ship Columbia – Closed January 8-11, 2024
  • Splash Mountain – Permanently closed
  • Tale of the Lion King – Closes permanently on January 7, 2024
  • Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular – Returns on April 26, 2024
  • Wondrous Journeys Fireworks – Return Date Unknown (Hopefully Early January 2024)

The big closure on the calendar for Disneyland is Haunted Mansion, which goes down on January 22, 2024. As discussed in  Haunted Mansion New Grounds & Store Coming in 2024 to Disneyland , this is a big project–much larger in scope and scale than the normal  Nightmare Before Christmas  overlay removal.

Don’t be surprised if the ride doesn’t reopen for several months–and if OG Haunted Mansion doesn’t return until 2025.

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

Tale of the Lion King permanently closes after the busy Christmas season. This just returned in expanded form last summer, and seemed pretty popular. Perhaps Disneyland is gearing up for another new production in the Fantasyland Theatre, but this is a big loss in the meantime.

Additionally, Disneyland has officially delayed Fantasmic’s return until May 24, 2024 . What changes that might be in store for a reimagined Fantasmic are unknown, but even when the nighttime spectacular does return, it’ll be in b-mode. Judging by the nature and extent of the fire damage, it’s likely that the Murphy Audio Animatronics figure of Maleficent will be missing for far longer.

That post also discusses why we’re expecting more than just a reimagined Fantasmic to make a splash next summer. With nothing else to celebrate and no new attractions to drive crowds, it’s likely that Disneyland leans on entertainment and builds out an ‘event’ that revolves around Fantasmic and other nighttime spectaculars. Our guess is that Paint the Night  finally  makes its return over at DCA in Summer 2024, too.

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

Finally, Splash Mountain is now officially closed to be reimagined into a new ride based on The Princess and the Frog . There are already visible signs of the transformation into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure .

It was a curious decision to close Splash Mountain right before the busy (and hotter) summer season, but it’s our understanding that the closure date had been pushed back a couple of times for various reasons and the team working on it needs as much time as they can get.

In Florida, Imagineers have already kicked that coast’s version of this project into high gear. Already, construction walls are up around Chick-A-Pin Hill and Imagineers have been observed on and around the attraction beginning work on the overhaul. The transformation timeline is an aggressive one, and we’re skeptical that Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will actually open in 2024. More likely, it’ll be delayed until 2025.

Now, a few notes about the above refurbishments. Disneyland is notorious for changing its refurbishment schedules, adding or canceling planned downtimes weeks or days in advance. While this practice is still relatively uncommon in the grand scheme of things, it’s worth pointing out because it does happen.

Now, here’s a bit of our philosophy concerning refurbishments, with the specific example of the recent multi-year Disneyland Railroad refurbishment used to illustrate…

Thoughts on Refurbishments

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

Nobody likes a favorite attraction to be refurbished during their vacation. It means missing out and potentially not being able to experience the ride for another year or longer, depending upon the frequency of your visits to Disneyland. A couple of years ago, the Disneyland Railroad closed for an extended refurbishment due to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge construction.

At first, we were really disappointed. This might seem like an odd attraction to lament the closure of, but as Southern Californians with Disneyland Annual Passes, this was an absolute favorite of ours. We rode regularly when we wanted to rest our feet, or simply a break from the crowds. With the exception of maybe ‘it’s a small world’, we did Disneyland Railroad more than any other attraction.

However, that initial disappointment pretty quickly gave way to excitement. We began thinking about ways Disneyland Railroad could be plussed, improving the experience for years to come. Disney had already announced that some changes would be made (as the track needed to be re-routed), and we were excited for the prospect of new show scenes or other visuals.

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

From my perspective, investing in the long-term quality of an attraction is far more important than the temporary satisfaction I’ll get out of riding it on my next visit. This is why it always perplexes me when regulars contend that their vacation will be ruined because their favorite attraction will be closed.

If it’s your favorite attraction and you’re active in the Disney fan community, that means you’ve been to Disneyland before and probably will visit again. It would thus stand to reason that you would want something you love to get the TLC it deserves, and continue to improve.

Disneyland Railroad works as a good example here…in large part because it did receive significant changes and enhancements. (Arguably, the Rivers of America suffered due to being condensed, but that’s another topic for another day–we cover all aspects of this in our New-Look Grand Circle Tour of Disneyland post.)

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

The point extends to other attractions that have seen similar plussings, but also have more of a problem with effects breaking. Take Indiana Jones Adventure, for example. This is a ride that seems to get a refurbishment about every other year (sometimes more frequently) and we’d argue that it could probably use more regular maintenance than that.

If you are a long-term fan, would you rather experience Indiana Jones Adventure every single visit with 75% of the effects working, or every single visit minus one or two with 95% of the effects working? For me, the answer to that is easy. I’ll take a superior long term experience every time.

Beyond that, there’s the much more compelling justification for regular refurbishments: they are essential for the safety of attractions. While we may think of these attractions as all fun and games that offer a safe sense of exhilaration, that’s when they are properly maintained.

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

It’s unpleasant to think about, but there have been several preventable deaths in the history of Disney’s parks. During a dark era of Disneyland history, improper maintenance was the cause of death on Big Thunder Mountain. Likewise, years of neglect at Disneyland Paris have led to incidents of injury that could be attributed to a lack of maintenance. In both cases, this has been addressed, and maintenance has improved considerably.

This is not meant to scare anyone or provoke an emotional reaction. Disney’s worldwide safety record is sterling as compared to other park operators. It’s still important to remember that these fun, ‘magical’ places also exist in the real world and use a lot of potentially dangerous elements if safety is not viewed as key. (Or, in Disney’s case, one of the Four Keys .)

When it comes to maintenance that is not essential to the safe operation of an attraction, we are left to contemplate what amount of show quality should be accepted. If following a strict Nunis-ian interpretation of the Four Keys, show is an important consideration, and it should always be 100%. This is a nice goal to strive for, but the practical reality is that 100% show quality is an unworkably high threshold sometimes.

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

In my estimation, this is a good example of balancing guest interests with show quality. Get the effects working that are easily fixable, and find other ways to address effects that are frequently breaking. We’re not talking about safety here, just random effects. Indiana Jones Adventure has had a number of effects disabled or replaced over the years because they were unreliable.

Guests are understandably concerned when it appears an inordinate number of attractions are closing during their vacation, especially out of state visitors. Trips to California are not cheap and are often once in a lifetime experiences; first-timers certainly do not want to miss out on experiences about which they’ve read extensive hype.

With that said, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure ought to be publishing their routine refurbishment schedules several months in advance, allowing guests to plan around closures. Disney plans maintenance well in advance, and this info should be passed along to guests. For the most part, it is.

Obviously, unplanned maintenance can occur, which takes rides out of commission for hours or even days at the last minute. This is an unavoidable part of sophisticated theme park attractions, and there’s no real way to “plan around” this. It just is what it is.

haunted mansion closing at disneyland

However, the problem with a “not during my vacation” attitude like this is that it’s always going to be someone’s (or tens of thousands of someones) vacation. If Disneyland and Disney California Adventure attractions with show quality issues aren’t close for refurbishments for fear of some guests during a time-limited window missing out, all guests in perpetuity are going to have a lesser experience.

The end result of that thinking is a duct-tapped approach to attraction maintenance, with whatever work that can be done overnight accomplished, and two parks full of attractions with half their effects broken. First-timers would be left wondering why there was so much hype about Disneyland in the first place, as so many components of rides simply don’t work. If you’re reading this as a lifelong fan, well…maybe you wouldn’t have become a lifelong fan if this were actually Disneyland’s modus operandi.

I’m bummed Small World will be closed during the runDisney weekend. I love that version since it’s the original and it boards outside.

' src=

I’m going to be at DL & DCA on my birthday the last week of January. My girlfriend and I are bummed that Splash Mountain will be closed as well as the haunted mansion are a lot of other closures expected to happen? I guess my main concern is is this a good time to go?

' src=

Just finished a trip to Disneyland and over the course of three days we had a ride go down while we were in queue or en route at least 6 times. Looking at the map on the app there were always several rides down at all times of the day and it seemed like no ride was safe from breakage. While we understand that this will happen, the frequency was jarring and became a running joke as the trip went on. It made it impossible to enter an area of a park and be able to do everything in that area. We found ourselves having to come back to areas we should have already “completed.” We’ve been to WDW many times and never experienced even a small fraction of the amount of ride closures we ran into at Disneyland. Are they starting to skimp on maintenance crews as part of their current cost cutting measures?

' src=

It appears Blue Bayou is closed January 7-12, any details on why? Will it mean that the Pirate ride will possibly be closed that week too? Thanks!

' src=

Am I misreading something when I look on the disneyland interactive map it says the train is being refurbished is that correct?

' src=

Disneyland needs ton of maintenance. We were there in June and in two days we hit 10 rides that were evacuated. Two of which we were. The ride stability for Spider-Man and for the incredicoaster was terrible. Indiana jones evacuated twice. Haunted mansion a few effects and on one ride we stopped 15 times. The magic was really not there that day.

' src=

Do you happen to have any idea what “The Heartbeat of New Orleans – A Living Mural” is? I noticed it appeared on the calendar with only night time hours (I’m looking at November 27th) – making me wonder if it’ll be a nighttime something or other on the Rivers of America. We saw lights & workers doing stuff on the Pirate ship every night while we were there last week.

And then I’m actually glad the Incredicoaster is getting some love – it’s my favorite ride but we didn’t have one single good ride on it last week b/c all of the coaster’s audio is messed up in one way or another. That + Indy being down is going to save us money on Genie+ for our next trip – no high height requirement rides means mom & dad don’t need it to quickly rider swap them without the kids, thanks Disneyland!

Congrats on Baby Bricker! From experience & with love – Rider swapping / trying to ride all the rides quickly with an under 40″ kid in tow will slow down / lower your ride counts IMMENSELY – I look forward to your updated Parental park ride strategies.

' src=

I heard that both the Incredicoaster and the Indiana Jones ride are going down for refurbishment on November 27th. But there is no word on how long they will be closed. I wonder what the chances are that the Indiana Jones ride will reopen before my trip in late January. I am surprised that the Indiana Jones ride is closing again after they just went through a 3 month refurbishment.

I just heard that the Indiana Jones ride will reopen on December 1st!! Yay!!!

Re: Fantasmic return

Once it returns in the spring, if it is used for a big marketing push, can we expect two showings a night on weekends in that coming fall?

I’m deciding how many park nights I need on a fall trip to see all the nighttime spectaculars. If they have two showings on a DL weekend night in September I can watch the halloween fireworks then catch the 10:30 Fantasmic, yes?

' src=

We were told on a recent Keys to the Kingdom tour by our guide, that Paint the Night would not ever come to MK as Mac the Truck was too big to make the turns on the parade route. Makes me sad as that is one of my favorite parades. I would love to see it come back in some form at DCA.

' src=

No offense to your guide, but whether Paint the Night will ever come to MK isn’t something they’d know.

It’s entirely possible that certain floats wouldn’t work in other parks–it was also the thought that Mack wouldn’t work at Disneyland back when Paint the Night was only in Hong Kong. But the solution to that is cutting those floats from the parade, just like they did with Frozen when PtN moved to DCA.

' src=

Tom, do you think there’s any chance that the current iteration of Rogers: The Musical is an audition or test run for something bigger (i.e., Broadway itself)? The current trend on Broadway right now is recycled nostalgia and from what I’ve heard about the Rogers musical, if it was able to be beefed out a bit more to pad its running time it would likely be as good as (and likely much better than) the average Broadway production.

It’s no secret that new iterations of the last two Hyperion Theater shows (Aladdin and Frozen) both became Broadway hits. While I realize those were new incarnations without a direct lineage tracing back to the Hyperion productions, if I were Disney brass I’d be thinking about ways to more directly monetize Rogers: The Musical vs. giving it away “for free” at DCA.

Wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the case, or if it’s a test for Disney Cruise Line.

Either way, I hope it’s not solely a test and that this version returns to DCA in 2024.

' src=

That would be fantastic. We’re huge fans of Rogers: The Musical and would love to see it return in any format!

Disneyland's Haunted Mansion ride slated for expansion, upgrades in 2024

The popular ride will undergo construction in 2024 to add handicap accessibility and expand the outdoor area of the theme ride at the southern california resort..

Disneyland is expanding the grounds of its Haunted Mansion next year, adding handicap accessibility and deepening the lore of the iconic theme ride at the Southern California resort.

Renovation plans, unveiled Tuesday on the Disney Parks blog , include a new garden, a new gift shop near the attraction's exit and an upgraded plaza for live entertainment. The additions are intended to bolster the experience of guests while they wait in line by building on the story of the Haunted Mansion, which was brought to life in July on the big screen .

Wait times vary but it can take over an hour to get into the Haunted Mansion.

Renovations part of Disneyland revamp of New Orleans Square

The upcoming changes are among many coming to the New Orleans Square area of the theme park and resort in Anaheim.

Tiana's Palace, a New Orleans-inspired soul food restaurant inspired by the 2009 animated movie "The Princess and the Frog," will open next month .

The park also has previously announced plans to overhaul and replace the now-closed Splash Mountain ride with Tiana's Bayou Adventure, also set to debut in 2024 .

Splash Mountain closed in May after 33 years as a mainstay at the resort after a petition to change the beloved water ride 's theme went viral. Because of the attraction's association with the 1946 Disney film " Song of the South ," the ride has long been criticized for its idealized portrayal of plantation life.

Walt Disney World in Florida closed its version of the ride in January.

New gardens, improved accessibility among plans

Planned renovations to the Haunted Mansion attraction will focus on the outdoor area where guests wait their turn to climb into a "doom buggy" for a tour of the spooky property.

Once completed, the queue area will feature gardens teaming with fountains, gazebos and themed statues inspired by famed characters of the attraction, including mansion owner Master Edward Gracey and psychic medium Madame Leota. Other famed elements of the grounds, such as the pet cemetery and horse-drawn funeral hearse, will remain.

The plaza adjacent to Tiana’s Palace will feature a new park replete with live entertainment and the shade of new and historic trees. Plans also call for improvements to accessibility of these areas for those with physical disabilities, including a new elevator exit from the Haunted Mansion.

Construction is slated to begin in January. Renderings of the changes are viewable here .

The ride is set to undergo a refurbishment that will not only transform it back to its original version but also introduce additional changes. In this article, we will provide you with updates on the closing date and the upcoming expansion project.

Expansion Project

Disneyland has exciting plans for the Haunted Mansion area, with construction scheduled to begin in January 2024. While the exact start date is yet to be confirmed, the expansion aims to enhance the guest experience by immersing them in an expanded outdoor queue with captivating theming elements. The queue will feature new gardens inspired by iconic characters like Master Gracey, Madame Leota, and the mysterious one-eyed cat. Guests can look forward to a water fountain, gazebo, statues, and beautifully landscaped surroundings.

Additionally, a new retail shop will be added next to the ride exit, located in the mansion’s carriage house. This shop promises to extend Madame Leota’s captivating presence beyond the eerie walls of the Haunted Mansion. While details remain under wraps, Disneyland hints at a future announcement that fans are sure to be “dying” to hear.

Plaza Enhancements Artist Rendering

Enhancements to Plaza

Alongside the Haunted Mansion expansion, Disney has also announced enhancements to the plaza adjacent to Tiana’s Palace. While specific details about these enhancements have yet to be revealed, they are sure to contribute to the magical atmosphere of the park.

Expansion Timeline

Although no specific timeframe or duration for the closure has been confirmed, sources indicate that it may be necessary to keep the attraction closed throughout the period between holiday seasons. This means that the regular Haunted Mansion experience could be closed until early 2025!

Wrapping Up

With the approaching closing date of Haunted Mansion Holiday, visitors to Disneyland have limited time to experience the enchanting holiday overlay. However, the upcoming refurbishment and expansion project promise an even more captivating and immersive experience for guests.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the progress of the construction and provide further details about this exciting expansion. Be sure to check back on the DVC Shop blog as more details become available!

These might be the best and worst times to visit Disneyland in 2024

Posted: January 4, 2024 | Last updated: January 4, 2024

Stressing over when to visit Disneyland in 2024? One woman has created a calendar of what could be the absolute best and worst days to visit the parks this year. The month-by-month calendar created by Jess Vodden on her Disney blog The Rambling Introvert includes historical crowd data, Disneyland events, holidays and more to map out anticipated slow and busy times.

Unsurprisingly, this week is one of the busiest of the year, the last holiday gasp before kids head back to school. But there’s only a short breather before crowds pick back up on the weekend of Jan. 13, which is both a three-day weekend for Martin Luther King Jr. Day and a RunDisney week , a popular half-marathon event that takes place inside the park. As usual, February and early March are forecast to be relatively chill months, but crowds return in late March as school spring breaks begin. (This year, Easter is on March 31.) Keep in mind, however, that Disney uses these slower times to close rides for refurbishment. After this week, the Blue Bayou restaurant , Mark Twain Riverboat, “it’s a small world” and Astro Orbiter will all be closed. Haunted Mansion closes on Jan. 22, with no set reopening date, as an expansion of its grounds takes place .

Vodden’s calendar is anticipating a very, very busy summer: Nearly every day in July is categorized as “completely packed,” with June only a bit better. As kids start to return to school in mid-August, there should be a bit more breathing room — although hot Anaheim days may not make for a super fun time, even with the swarms abating. For our money, early to mid-November is an ideal time to plan a park trip. Holiday decorations will be going up, but the crazy crush of Thanksgiving-to-New Year’s vacationers hasn’t yet kicked in. The weather also tends to be perfectly pleasant during the days, if a bit chilly at night.

If there’s a single time to avoid in 2024, it may well be Memorial Day weekend. On Friday, May 24, “ Fantasmic ” is set to return after shutting down when the massive mechanical dragon caught fire during the climatic scene in April. The combination of the return of a beloved new show — with heretofore unknown changes — and the holiday weekend virtually guarantees gridlock along the already tight walkways around New Orleans Square.

Keep in mind, though, that crowd patterns changed dramatically after the pandemic. The introduction of park reservations and increased blocked-out days for annual passes has meant that weekdays can be surprisingly busy, especially in the evenings after locals get off work. When Disney anticipates particularly high-demand weekends or holiday weekends, it will often block out annual passholders, meaning a random Thursday evening could be busier than a Friday, when passholders are blocked out.

If there’s any sure indicator of crowd levels, it’s the price of Genie+ . Disney’s paid skip-the-line service costs $30 per person on Wednesday, plus an extra $26 per guest if you wanted to skip the line at Disneyland’s most popular attraction, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. That’s an additional $224 for a family of four on top of the price of park tickets.
