Kingfisher 30

Kingfisher 30 is a 29 ′ 11 ″ / 9.1 m monohull sailboat designed by R.A.G. Nierop and built by Westfield Engineering Co. (Marine) Ltd. starting in 1970.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

KINGFISHER 30 (Mk1a) 1964 Spade rudder hung through the aft end of the cockpit. Keels missing the plate aft. Keels splayed more than the Mk2.

Review of Kingfisher 30

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Kingfisher 30 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.14 - 1.24 meter (3.74 - 4.04 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with a Watermota engine at 29.0 hp (21 kW), which gives a max speed about 4.5 knots.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Kingfisher 30 is 1.32, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Kingfisher 30 is about 139 kg/cm, alternatively 783 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 139 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 783 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 6.74

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 22m 2 (236 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

Devlin Boats , Fishing Boats

kingfisher 30 sailboat

A fellow dropped into my office a couple of months ago with a novel idea. He is the owner of a Power Scow which is a type of boat I would expect only a few readers of my design write-ups to be familiar with. A power scow is pretty much what the name says; it is a powered barge on the water long used in the Southeast Alaska fisheries as buy boats which are boats that goes out to the fishing grounds, buys fish from the fishing boats and sells ice and other limited supplies to the fishermen. After filling their own holds with fresh caught fish, the buy boat heads off to the nearest town or cannery to offload. This chap has a particularly nice power scow built in the 1940s and he has done a yeoman’s job of keeping her in good shape and running condition. She has the latest fillet machines, flash freezing capabilities and vacuum packing on board and for these premium line caught salmon and halibut, she does an extraordinary job of keeping the fish fresh, clean, and ready for the freezer or the skillet.

But back to our visit — you see he is a visionary type of guy always thinking out into the future with a keen eye on the prize of keeping his power scow working hard and efficiently and also keeping several fish markets and a growing internet market supplied with his amazing product. These Alaskan fish are of such quality that anyone could provide them a place in their diet without fear or regret. But he had a new vision one that was just at the wee starting place of forming shape and that is where his visit with me came into the picture. He was thinking that there might be a small number of individuals who are in their late middle years, perhaps even retired from their first careers, but not yet ready to hang it all up. These individuals might also want a bit of adventure in their lives, ready to see waters and areas that they hadn’t the time to do earlier in their lives and careers. And so he was thinking that these hardy souls might be interested in setting up small fishing businesses built around the design that I am outlining here and built around his power scow.

kingfisher 30 sailboat

So let’s take a closer look at the Kingfisher design that I came up with. She is not a huge boat at just over 30 feet in length but with that utility of staying close to the mothership, she really doesn’t need to be much longer and therefore have good fuel economy and seaworthy comfort for the crew. She can be rigged for either hand trolling (non-powered gurdies which control the lines for bringing the fish into the boat) or she can be powered with a small hydraulic pump that would run off the engine and can be rigged as a power troller. There are twin 18 foot long trolling poles on either side of the single mast and these are lowered to about a 45 degree angle off the port and starboard sides of the boats helping to keep the fishing lines out of each other’s way. They can also be used to set small paravanes for running when the weather is really snotty and these simple gear additions can really make the difference between just a crappy day and one that could provide you with real story fodder. If you are anything like me, even though I like a good story, the older I get, the less I desire to experience those “really good” story days if you follow my drift. Anyway, the paravanes work very well at allowing the boat to continue into waters that might really blunt the progress of an unstabilized hull.

There is good deck space and instead of a fixed cargo hold (which could be done but a simpler solution is available), we are using large poly plastic totes that are chucked on the deck and when offloading fish, a bag that is held in the tub can be hoisted to the buy boat and a simple cleaning of the deck and totes is all that is necessary to keep the boat clean and organized. Moving forward into the pilothouse, the cabin follows a couple of ideas that I might have tried to hit you over the head with in the past but without hearing much of a thud, I want to try them again and they involve two subjects that need addressing. The first is the head and how to keep the crew and the skipper happy and comfortable. While the Kingfisher concept is one that might involve a single fisherman on board, (and my first inclination was to reduce the need or desire to have anything like a private head compartment on board), upon presenting the preliminary sketches to my co-workers, I was told rather bluntly that the boat would need a head to have any chance at seeing the light of day as a concept. So let’s address the idea of how to deal with a head in a boat and have it be really be functional enough to allow some privacy when being used. One of the features I noticed on lots of working boats, fishing and tug, is that the head compartment is very often not common or connected to the interior of the boat. That is to say they are accessed from the stern or side decks of the boat with an entirely separate door to the deck. And with no common door to the interior of the boat, you have a chance to actually use the head with some semblance of privacy. Once a common door to the inside of the boat gets put in the design, those privacy features go literally out the door. If you use the head for a shower, then you have the additional problem of what to do after adding considerable moisture into the interior of a boat that might be operating in a high humidity environment and the problem of how to truly and easily dry out the boat, which leads nicely into the second thought of mine.

Heat is a problem in most boats that run in the Northwest coastal waters of North America (my favorite and most often frequented waters), and it’s not called the rainy northwest for nothing! It’s not unusual for a typical cruiser or boater to do a long trip up to Alaska and back and never once put on a short sleeved shirt in the whole summer. In fact, we occasionally have summers where wool shirts and jackets are worn every day as a hedge against the cool and moist climate. On virtually all Northwest Coast working boats they fix this problem with a simple and ingenious solution, one that anything from a 20 feet cruiser up to a boat well over a hundred feet in length can use. The solution is an oil cooking range. Some of the best of these and the ones most common in the Northwest are made by the Dickinson company of British Columbia just to the north of my own Washington State. They come in a variety of sizes and configurations and the idea is that they are lit early in the trip, even sometimes before the engine is started, the thermostat and heat control has simple settings and burning diesel or even a cleaner burn with kerosene fuel, they just sit there and heat away, letting the whole interior of the boat stay warm and dry. The cast iron top of the stove radiates the heat very well and a pot can be kept on one of the corners instantly providing you with warm beverage capability whenever desired. If you come into the interior of the boat with wet rain gear, the boat doesn’t instantly fog up with the added moisture and you keep your windows clear and warm your bones up very quickly. I call this the ‘haven of warmth’ theory, and if you ever try it, you too will realize that when you wrap your head around the idea that the boat is always warm and dry no matter what the conditions are outside, you will quickly think of your boat as being protective and a haven of warmth and comfort. So even if we are foolish enough to have the door to the head opening into the interior of the boat, we can still dry her out quickly after taking a hot shower and everything will stay smelling nice and sweet.

I say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to my eye, this design looks just about right with good utility and function and she is trailerable to boot. With her inboard diesel engine, the fuel economy is good and depending on how much horsepower you give her, the speed can be adjusted from anything in the full displacement range up to semi-displacements speeds. – Sam Devlin

Broker's Comments

The Kingfisher 30 yacht has a proven track record for safe ocean going passage making. Chay Blyth sailed one to the Cape and back! She is much heavier than a modern 30 footer with sheet steel bilge plates to give her extra stability and also provide a much more comfortable ride. This particular example has been well cared for and would provide a great family cruising boat for a very modest price. She has an raised aft deck area which is excellent for lounging in the sun, casting a line and watching the world go by. A deep cockpit and wide side decks make her easy to get around, and the bilge plate profile allows you to take advantage of the cheaper moorings and drying harbours. The decks have been freshly painted.

I thoroughly recommend a visit to this boat.

Hi Took one of these for a test sail and thinking of buying her but she has rather heavy helm with a strange universal coupling link to the rudder which I think may be absorbing all the effort. Any comment on this boat and this problem much appreciated as I have been unable to find any review of her abilities in my pile of PBO back issues. Thanks <hr width=100% size=1>

Hi. I have a Kingfisher 20+, and while I was thinking of buying her got loads of great advice from Pete Johnson of the Kingfisher Yacht Owner's Association. Have a look at their website at www.kyoa.co.uk . Contact details are on there, and Pete is the guy to ask specifically about the K30. Though, of course, he may be a tad biased..! Good luck! Kingfisher yachts were designed by RAG Nierop, owner and MD of Westfield Engineering, Poole, Dorset. In the early seventies yacht design was undergoing something of a transition from the traditional construction methods of wooden boats to the scientific engineering approach we see today. As an aircraft designer Nierop was a pioneer in this advancement. One example is in his approach to twin keels. Elaborating on the construction of the keels, Mr Nierop explained ‘these were quarter-inch steel plate fabrications with the lead run into them. This only takes up a depth of four inches at the bottom enabling the rest to be used as a fuel tank’. They were so well thought of as a robust and capable cruiser Chay Blythe chose a stock Kingfisher 30 for his first round the world attempt. Our example requires a little tlc, as she has stood in the yard since her owner emmigrated - nothing that a warm weekend with soapy water and deck scrubber can't sort out!

Kingfisher 30 Ft. Sailing Yacht

kingfisher 30 sailboat

Engine Make: bmc

Country/Region of Manufacture: United Kingdom

kingfisher 30 sailboat

This is a bit of a project , Glasfor (welsh for blue water) is out on the hard standing in Plymouth yacht haven where she can be viewed , ask the crane chap and he will point you in the right direction, .lifted last week pressure washed , antifouled , tiger extra, and new anodes installed. All the seacocks (princess) where replaced 3 years ago all greased and working, Raymarine speed, depth+temp and smart pilot with ram all working.the mast has a 1 meter extension making her the SS model from the factory, mast steps!! Makes life a lot easier, sails are in very good condition 2 other sails in the 'rear garage' never had them out but I think they are a spinnaker and a storm sail. All the lines where replaced 3 years ago and still in very good condition. At the stern there is the 'garage' been used a storage but there is room for 2 to sleep...just... the tender and oars and a few other bits are in there at the moment.Inside will sleep 4 , gas stove, sink, head, lockers, TV with omni directional aerial which doubles up as a VHF transmitter, 120amp leisure battery 3 years old, I've started to do some work lining to front sleeping area ie thermal lining and then carpeted but all the cushions (4 in total) will need replacing , i have already got headlining material to do the entire boat.

She will need 2 new batteries 1 engine and one leisure or possibly use the one for the tv/radio, there is also a smart deep cycle battery charger fitted that will charge and maintain upto 3 batteries , lots an lots of spares, the engine is a 1.5 BMC diesel 45-50bhp strong and pushes along really well very economical 40lt stainless tank 30+ lts in it. The top needs a good wash and sand down, then repainting brand new tin of light grey grip paint and very nearly full tin of white gloss . My circumstances have change and can no longer afford the time to give her the attention she needs so she has to go.There is a lift back in included provisionally booked for around the 20th of April and the hard standing is covered upto then, so if you buy her you have around 5 weeks to do the work and you will have a very strong stable and very sea worthy boat.I'm sure that I've missed lots off ! Drop me a line with any questions and I will try to reply as quick as i can.Starting the auction at £1500 really looking for at least double that so offers welcome.Good luck

Family of nine left behind in remote alaska, charged $9k by norwegian cruise lines.

An Oklahoma family of nine was left stranded in remote Alaska after their Norwegian Cruise Lines ship left them behind — and then charged the desperate family $9,000 in customs fees.

The Gault family was traveling with six young kids and a 78-year-old grandmother on July 12 when they disembarked from the Norwegian Encore in Katchikan, a small town in a string of south Alaskan islands, so they could watch a lumberjack show together.

But on their way back, the local tour operator transporting passengers to and from the vessel failed to properly check who had tickets and who didn’t — merely conducting a head count — and told the Gaults there was no room and to wait for another shuttle.

The Gaults were travelling with young kids and a 78-year-old grandmother when they were left behind by their cruise

“We see the chaos getting onto the buses. We go to get on the bus and one of the attendees is like, ‘The bus is full, and you know you got to wait for the next bus,'” Joshua Gault told 2 News .

However, that bus never came, and after frantically calling the port authority to arrange transportation, they finally arrived back at the docks to see the Norwegian Encore sailing away — taking with it their passports, medication and clothes.

“Six kids on board, minor children, and a 78-year-old mother-in-law, all on medication. We all had to quit cold turkey medication these last few days because it was all on the cruise ship,” Joshua said.

From there, the chaos only deepened.

The family, which had already spent about $30,000 on the trip, was immediately hit with nearly a $9,000 charge from the cruise line — $971 per passenger — for missing the boat.

That fee stemmed from the US Customs and Border Protection’s Passenger Vessel Services Act, which they violated by not visiting a foreign port before they returned to the US, as their itinerary planned.

But they were unable to catch up with the vessel at its next port of call in Canada because nearly all their passports had sailed away from them.

With no choice but to find their way home, the Gaults had to arrange new lodging within hours, book flights home, and feed their many hungry mouths — with the costs piling up the longer it took them to get home.

The family of nine had spent about $30,000 on their trip with Norwegian Cruise Lines before being left behind in Alaska

“All the flights for nine people, all the food for nine people, all the hotel stays,” Gault told 2 News, counting off the accommodations they had to arrange — and pay for — on the fly.

After days of travel — which included stops in numerous cities, canceled flights, and more than one overnight airport stay — the family finally arrived home in Tulsa, strung out, tired, and having picked up exhausting cases of COVID along the way.

“So yeah, we’re beat down right now. We’re unhealthy and beaten down,” Joshua said.

The family is working with Norwegian to rectify the situation, but after their ordeal, they feel the cruise line has a lot of slack to pick up to make things right.

“‘We’re still looking into it, we haven’t forgotten about you,'” Cailyn Gault said Norwegian kept telling them as they battled their way home.

The Gaults spent days getting home, sleeping in airports along the way

“And I was like, ‘No, we feel like you pretty much forgot about us when you left us in port and told us to go figure it out,'” she added.

Norwegian Cruise Lines told The Post it has begun the process of refunding the Gaults the nearly $9,000 in fees they were charged, and will reimburse them for all their travel expenses once receipts have been received.

The cruise line also said it tried to contact the Gaults after they missed their bus due to “a misstep by a local tour operator,” and when they were unable to reach them, worked with the local port authority to help the family arrange lodging for the night before they were able to make a flight to Seattle the next day.

“In addition, these guests will be receiving a pro-rated refund for the two cruise days they missed,” a Norwegian Cruise Line representative said.

“As a gesture of goodwill, the company will also be providing each of the nine guests with a Future Cruise Credit in the form of a 20 percent discount of their cruise fare that can be used towards their next voyage,” Norwegian added.

The cruise line charged the Gaults nearly $9,000 for missing the boat

The incident was just the latest to put Norwegian Cruise Lines under the spotlight for leaving passengers behind.

Back in April, eight passengers were left behind in Africa after an independent tour they took was late to arrive at the boat — leaving them cobbling together an itinerary across the continent to catch up with the boat.

It is well-known policy on most cruise lines that passengers who fail to return to the ship within a strict deadline will be left behind so the vessel can maintain its schedule — but exceptions are generally made if tardiness is the fault of the cruise line or an operator provided or recommended by it.

Though the passengers in April had been using an independent tour when they missed the boat, their ages and handicaps sparked controversy over the rigidity of the cruise line’s policy.

Norwegian ultimately agreed to partially refund those passengers for their expenses incurred catching up with the boat.

1 missing, 4 safe after boat capsizes near Noorvik

A car parked near trees.

A boater is missing near the Northwest Arctic community of Noorvik after a craft capsized on Monday night, Alaska State Troopers say.

According to an online dispatch, the boat was carrying five people on the Kobuk River north of Noorvik. After it capsized, four of them were able to contact locals by VHF radio for help, but 30-year-old Brandon Sheldon from the nearby village of Kiana was unaccounted for.

Dozens of volunteers from Noorvik and nearby communities responded, as well as search and rescue teams from the Northwest Arctic Borough. The search for Sheldon is ongoing.
