Trailer for Yacht Thriller 'Stowaway' with Ruby Rose & Frank Grillo

by Alex Billington July 21, 2022 Source: YouTube

Stowaway Trailer

"Push the red button." Yep that's all it takes to defeat them! Voltage Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a survival thriller titled Stowaway , formerly known as The Yacht . Both of these titles are bland and boring, neither really works. There was already this sci-fi survival thriller called Stowaway on Netflix a few years ago anyway. A tenacious party girl fights to survive after three thieves commandeer her luxury yacht. Described as similar to Die Hard or Panic Room but on a yacht. The indie film stars Ruby Rose , Frank Grillo , Emma Maddock , Patrick Schwarzenegger , Luis Da Silva Jr. , & Major Dodge . Aside from the trailer showing most of the film, including what the thieves are after, this is just a bad trailer. Why does every shot in this look so dark?! Everything on the boat is so poorly shot it's hard to see anything happening.

Here's the official trailer for Declan Whitebloom's Stowaway , direct from Voltage's YouTube :

Stowaway Poster

The film is about a tenacious and troubled young woman who inherits a luxury yacht from her estranged father and has to fight to survive when it gets hijacked by thieves. Unable to escape and trapped on the yacht at high seas, the prey becomes the hunter as she turns the tables on the intruders and takes matters into her own hands. Stowaway , formerly known as just The Yacht , is directed by British filmmaker Declan Whitebloom , making his feature directorial debut after numerous music videos and short films previously. The screenplay is by Ian Hayden. Produced by Adam Beasley, Ford Corbett, Mike Dill, Michael Jefferson, Nathan Klingher, Jib Polhemus, Lowell Shapiro, Anthony Standberry, and Ryan Winterstern. Voltage Pics will debut Whitebloom's Stowaway streaming on AMC+ starting August 5th, 2022 this summer. Anyone?

The Devastating '28 Days Later' Moment That Completely Changes the Movie's Meaning

The 10 best arthouse adventure movies, ranked, the 10 most powerful sith lords in star wars, ranked.

AMC released the official trailer for their new thriller Stowaway starring Ruby Rose ( John Wick: Chapter 2 ) as a party girl caught up in a boat theft after criminals take over her luxury yacht. The new footage shows how Rose's character Bella ended up with such a massive yacht and teases her fight for survival once the thieves set out to sea with her still aboard. Described as a blend between Die Hard and Panic Room , the film is set to premiere exclusively on AMC+ on August 5.

Everything starts off great for Bella as she learns from an old friend ( Frank Grillo , Captain America ) that her father left her a luxury yacht when he died. Even better, after a night of partying at a bar, she found a guy named Michael ( Patrick Schwarzenegger , The Staircase ) to take back to the boat for the night. When things couldn't get much better, the trailer takes a hard left turn into borderline horror as the guards patrolling around the docks are taken out by a group of masked thieves who make their way onto Bella's boat and start taking off with her still inside. Worst of all, she can't swim, leaving her alone on the boat while Michael swims off to get help.

From there, it becomes a fight for survival as Bella takes on the thieves who wanted the boat. Judging from their gear and the safes they find on board, there's something special about the yacht that they're after specifically. Once Bella sends out a distress signal to the coast guard though, the hunt is on to find and kill her. Rather than be at the mercy of her attackers, she opts to fight, going full John McClane and becoming the hunter herself. Tensions run high as the coast guard rushes to stop the boat theft in progress while Rose takes down the main man behind the operation. When it's all over, she'll likely be boatless once more as the yacht explodes in a massive fireball to close out the footage.

Stowaway hails from Declan Whitebloom who'll make his feature directorial debut with the film. While relatively inexperienced in the realm of television and film, he's been a fixture in the music industry, directing music videos for artists like The Jonas Brothers , Taylor Swift , Little Big Town , and Demi Lovato . He did, however, helm the short film Blackbird as well as the documentary series Prophets of Science Fiction . It's also a debut for writer Ian Hayden who penned the script Whitebloom directed.

Joining the starring trio of Rose, Schwarzenegger, and Grillo are Scotty Bohnen ( The Last Son ), Danny Bohnen ( She Walks The Woods ), and Luis Da Silva, Jr. ( Fast Five , The Devil Goes Down ). For Rose, it's an opportunity to lead a star-studded, high-octane thriller after gathering a wealth of experience in action romps like The Meg , John Wick: Chapter 2 , and xXx: Return of Xander Cage .

Stowaway releases exclusively on AMC+ on August 5. Check out the trailer below:

Godzilla x Kong's Mothra Theory Confirmed By Director

Inside out 2’s new emotions create a major problem for the first movie, bad boys 4 rotten tomatoes score continues franchise's positive streak.

A brand-new trailer for Triangle of Sadness, the dark-comedy satire film and Palme d'Or winner from Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund and starring Woody Harrelson , releases. Alongside Harrelson, Triangle of Sadness features a supporting cast that includes Harris Dickinson ( The King's Man ), Charlbi Dean ( Black Lightning ), Vicki Berlin, Zlatko Burić, Oliver Ford Davies, Iris Berben, Dolly de Leon, Sunnyi Melles, and Henrik Dorsin. The story revolves around celebrity model couple Carl (Dickinson) and Yaya (Dean) as they're invited to join a luxury cruise for the extremely wealthy, helmed by an unhinged ship captain. However, things take a turn for the worse when the boat begins to capsize, and the passengers find themselves stranded on an island.

Now, a brand-new trailer for Triangle of Sadness released by NEON puts the spotlight on the eccentric passengers of the cruise ship and its captain, played by Harrelson. The trailer begins with Carl taking part in an uncomfortable photoshoot before he receives a free invitation to a yacht for the super-rich, where he and his influencer girlfriend Yaya are introduced to their snobby co-passengers and their flashy personalities. As the trailer progresses, what starts as an Instagram-ready adventure takes a dark turn, as a chain of bizarre, gross-out events ultimately conclude with the ship getting capsized. Check out the full trailer below:

Triangle of Sadness has generated plenty of buzz since its premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation. The film marked Östlund's second Palme d'Or win as well, after he first claimed the highly coveted prize for the 2014 drama film The Square, which featured The Handmaid's Tale star Elizabeth Moss and Dominic West. The acclaimed director's films are known for their striking commentary, which challenge social hierarchies, and the above trailer suggests that Triangle of Sadness will be looking to continue that trend. Audiences can check out Triangle of Sadness when the film makes its theatrical debut on October 7.

luxury yacht movie 2022

Now streaming on:

The obscenely wealthy are having a tough time at the movies lately. Last month, Ruben Östlund stuck a bunch of them on a luxury yacht and watched them projectile vomit all over each other in “ Triangle of Sadness .” Next week, Rian Johnson will stick a bunch of them on a private Greek island to watch them wonder who among them is a killer in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”

But this week, members of the extreme 1% just get stuck—as in skewered, and grilled—in “The Menu.” Director Mark Mylod satirizes a very specific kind of elitism here with his wildly over-the-top depiction of the gourmet food world. This is a place where macho tech bros, snobby culture journalists, washed-up celebrities, and self-professed foodies are all deluded enough to believe they’re as knowledgeable as the master chef himself. Watching them preen and try to one-up each other provides much of the enjoyment in the sharp script from Seth Reiss and Will Tracy .

But the build-up to what’s happening at this insanely expensive restaurant on the secluded island of Hawthorne is more intriguing than the actual payoff. The performances remain prickly, the banter deliciously snappy. And “The Menu” is always exquisite from a technical perspective. But you may find yourself feeling a bit hungry after this meal is over.

An eclectic mix of people boards a ferry for the quick trip to their storied destination. Chef Slowik’s fine-tuned, multi-course dinners are legendary—and exorbitant, at $1,250 a person. “What, are we eating a Rolex?” the less-than-impressed Margot ( Anya Taylor-Joy ) quips to her date, Tyler ( Nicholas Hoult ), as they’re waiting for the boat to arrive. He considers himself a culinary connoisseur and has been dreaming of this evening for ages; she’s a cynic who’s along for the ride. They’re gorgeous and look great together, but there’s more to this relationship than initially meets the eye. Both actors have a keen knack for this kind of rat-a-tat banter, with Hoult being particularly adept at playing the arrogant fool, as we’ve seen on Hulu’s “The Great.” And the always brilliant Taylor-Joy, as our conduit, brings a frisky mix of skepticism and sex appeal.

Also on board are a once-popular actor ( John Leguizamo ) and his beleaguered assistant ( Aimee Carrero ); three obnoxious, entitled tech dudes ( Rob Yang , Arturo Castro , and Mark St . Cyr); a wealthy older man and his wife ( Reed Birney and Judith Light ); and a prestigious food critic ( Janet McTeer ) with her obsequious editor ( Paul Adelstein ). But regardless of their status, they all pay deference to the star of the night: the man whose artful and inspired creations brought them there. Ralph Fiennes plays Chef Slowik with a disarming combination of Zen-like calm and obsessive control. He begins each course with a thunderous clap of his hands, which Mylod heightens skillfully to put us on edge, and his loyal cooks behind him respond in unison to his every demand with a spirited “Yes, Chef!” as if he were their drill sergeant. And the increasingly amusing on-screen descriptions of the dishes provide amusing commentary on how the night is evolving as a whole.

Of these characters, Birney and Light’s are the least developed. It’s particularly frustrating to have a performer of the caliber of Light and watch her languish with woefully little to do. She is literally “the wife.” There is nothing to her beyond her instinct to stand by her man dutifully, regardless of the evening’s disturbing revelations. Conversely, Hong Chau is the film’s MVP as Chef Slowik’s right-hand woman, Elsa. She briskly and efficiently provides the guests with a tour of how the island operates before sauntering among their tables, seeing to their every need and quietly judging them. She says things like: “Feel free to observe our cooks as they innovate” with total authority and zero irony, adding greatly to the restaurant’s rarefied air.

The personalized treatment each guest receives at first seems thoughtful, and like the kind of pampering these people would expect when they pay such a high price. But in time, the specifically tailored dishes take on an intrusive, sinister, and violent tone, which is clever to the viewer but terrifying to the diner. The service remains rigid and precise, even as the mood gets messy. And yet—as in the other recent movies indicting the ultra-rich—“The Menu” ultimately isn’t telling us anything we don’t already know. It becomes heavy-handed and obvious in its messaging. Mind-boggling wealth corrupts people. You don’t say.

But “The Menu” remains consistently dazzling as a feast for the eyes and ears. The dreamy cinematography from Peter Deming makes this private island look impossibly idyllic. The sleek, chic production design from Ethan Tobman immediately sets the mood of understated luxury, and Mylod explores the space in inventive ways, with overhead shots not only of the food but also of the restaurant floor itself. The Altmanesque sound design offers overlapping snippets of conversation, putting us right in the mix. And the taunting and playful score from Colin Stetson enhances the film’s rhythm, steadily ratcheting up the tension.

It’s a nice place to visit—but you wouldn’t want to eat there.

Why Michael J. Fox Regrets These Comedy Flops

'The ship is going under.' Watch Woody Harrelson helm a $250 million luxury yacht for the uber-rich in the new trailer for Triangle of Sadness from Neon. Harris Dickinson stars in the film, which sees him as a male model at the prime of his career. He makes his way to the massive super yacht, and things are going excellent until the gross-out, over-the-top shenanigans that will ensue in the movie.

Despite receiving the Palme d'Or, Triangle of Sadness sparked walkouts at the Cannes Film Festival, according to The Age . One 15-minute scene involves graphic vomiting and defecation following some gooey oysters, champagne, and a fair amount of sea sickness. You catch a small glimpse of it in the trailer, but the full-fledged version is sure to be too much for some audiences.

Triangle of Sadness will be the third film in a row to be a Palme d'Or winner for Neon, following Titane and Parasite . The movie makes its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month before sailing into theaters on Oct 7. Watch the brand-new, excessively nauseating trailer below.

Director Ruben Östlund is Looking to Widen His Audience

Ruben Östlund is the filmmaker behind Triangle of Sadness , and he's had success in the industry before. However, until now, Östlund was prominent in European arthouse cinema, with foreign language films to his credit thus far. The director is making a big jump to a film primarily in English. The director wants to broaden his audience and bring his movies to a global scale while maintaining his initial fan base. He tells IndieWire , 'it's been very important to try to keep that audience and step it up, make it a little bit bigger, of course.'

Related: Triangle of Sadness Wins 2022 Palme d'Or; Other Winners from 75th Cannes Film Festival

"My intention was to shock the audience as much as I always want to shock the audience. But I was scared to lose my old audience. I was scared to lose the kind of connection I had built up with the distributors of the European arthouse cinema. It's been very important for me to try to keep that audience and step it up, make it a little bit bigger, of course."

Östlund is no stranger to the Palme d'Or either, as he's won in the past for his film The Square starring Elisabeth Moss . The movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, proving that the director can consistently make great projects. Audiences are hoping for something just as hysterical when Triangle of Sadness lands in theaters later this year, on Oct 7.

Cannes Film Festival 2022: Top 10 Yachts with Film Inspiration

Posted May 17, 2022 in Lifestyle by Janine St.Denis

“Bond. James Bond.”

Cue the Music.

Man tying suit in James Bond style

There’s no question. When it comes to classic Hollywood glamour and daring storytelling, luxury yachts are at the forefront. Nothing embodies the delight and excitement of class, wealth and esteem like a superyacht. Whether you’re into chaotic biopics like Wolf of Wallstreet or 007 films with a touch of mystery and elegance — high-class cinema and yachts inevitably go hand in hand. In honor of the Cannes Film Festival, Northrop & Johnson spotlights our top picks of luxury yachts that pay homage to cinema. Just as charcuteries and wine complement one another, we’re pairing our finest yachts with films of their nature. From charters to brokerage to new builds, we’ve got it all. So sit back and relax, as we take you on this cinematic yachting journey.

Yacht Charters

Skyfall and casino royale.

Champions of absolute luxury, daring adventure and neverending entertainment, these charter yachts are designed to emulate the opulence of a Bond story.

Guests can enjoy easy travel and a stylish, bond-like exit thanks to the touch-and-go helipad available aboard.

Front profile of superyacht CASINO ROYALE on the water

Her 007 counterpart, the 163′ (49.68m) Christensen superyacht CASINO ROYALE, is equally delightful, boasting massive spaces for leisure and pleasure aboard. Marked by Mahogany wood adornments throughout, CASINO ROYALE truly embodies the luxurious atmosphere of an international superspy. She boasts more than 6,900 square feet of interior space, including a vast skylounge with unparalleled amenities. Her exterior fulfills the ultimate alfresco lifestyle, spotlighting massive sunpads, a large Jacuzzi, a full bar with seating for 10, a dayhead and a barbecue. With exercise equipment on deck, you won’t have to worry about missing your MI6 morning workouts when chartering.

Side profile of superyacht USHER on the water

The magnificent 154′ (46.94m) Delta Marine superyacht USHER is both a movie star in herself and a production service on the water. Accompanied by a crew of 12 with professional videography and photography skills, guests can enjoy a dive into absolute luxury with long-lasting memories of their charter. Throughout her interior, USHER spotlights an ambiance of entertainment and comfort. Her main salon allows guests to relax with drinks in hand, socialize and enjoy a movie night on the 80-inch flatscreen TV. Her deck spaces are equally engaging, having been featured in the exhilarating film Entourage . An extension of the HBO series, this movie spotlights a group of friends and movie star Vince Chase (Adrian Grenier), cascading into the turbulent elegance of the Hollywood lifestyle. With her impressive offerings, it’s no wonder that USHER was chosen to star alongside Grenier in this comedy-drama.

Rear profile of luxury yacht ARIONAS on the water

Like any 007 film, the interior of ARIONAS features a high-class atmosphere with romantic undertones. Outdoors, all aboard can enjoy the finest experience of the alfresco lifestyle. From excellent views on the loungers of her sundeck to alfresco dining in the open-air aft to the delightful easy-access swim platform, ARIONAS ensures that her charter guests will enjoy classic Hollywood glamour and nothing short of extraordinary.

The World’s Most Expensive Yachts—Including Some That Cost Billions

Photo: Getty Images

Though superyachts are already among the most costly consumer items available, the prices of the most expensive yachts in the world are still astounding. In recent decades, those with money to burn have settled on these floating palaces as an ideal locus for demonstrating their prosperity, and, as such, the global luxury yacht industry is undergoing a golden age. The world’s überwealthy think of their motor yachts as toys, and they’re constantly trying to outdo each other in scale, design, amenities, materials, and sheer profligacy.

Knowing this, what features does it take to own one of the most expensive yachts in existence? And how much do these opulent vessels actually cost? To that end, AD has compiled a list of the five priciest superyachts currently out on the water. As with many things connected to the very wealthy, details are shrouded in secrecy—often intentionally—to shield the assets from taxation or seizure, or to protect privacy.

Below, dive into the five reportedly most expensive yachts in the world.

5. Dubai ($400 million)

Most expensive yachts.

This 531-foot yacht is reportedly owned by United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Though it was originally planned for another Middle Eastern potentate, Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, he suddenly voided the contract in 2001. With exteriors designed by Andrew Winch and interiors by Platinum Yachts, this German-built Blohm + Voss vessel features several Jacuzzis, a pool inlaid with handmade mosaic tiles that is reportedly large enough to hold 115 people, a circular staircase, a discotheque with an appropriately sized dance floor, squash courts, a movie theater, a dining room for 90 guests (the other 25 presumably have to eat in the pool?), a helipad, and a submarine.

4. Topaz ($527 million)

Manchester city's owner sheikh manour's yacht "topaz" in marmaris.

Resembling a stealth bomber, this 483-foot ship is reportedly owned by Russian fertilizer and coal oligarch Andrey Melnichenko. With exteriors by Tim Heywood Design Ltd. and interior designs by Terence Disdale Design, this German-built Lürssen Yacht features a 2,500-square-foot primary bedroom, six guest suites (with moveable walls so they can be transformed into four grand staterooms), glassware and tableware fashioned from French crystal, a helicopter hangar, a 30-foot speedboat tender, and three swimming pools, including one with a glass-bottom dangling menacingly above a disco.

3. Azzam ($600 million)

Longest luxury yacht in the world.

This 590-foot ship is currently thought to be the largest private yacht in the world and one of the fastest, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. To achieve this immense scale and speed, it required a pair of gas turbines and two stratospherically potent diesel engines, rendering it very difficult to build. It is reportedly owned by a member of the royal family of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With exteriors by Nauta Yacht and interiors by French decorator Cristophe Leoni, this yacht was also built by Lürssen in Germany. The vessel is set apart by its early 19th-century Empire-style veneered furniture, as well as its state-of-the-art security systems, including a fully bulletproof primary suite and a high-tech missile deterrence capabilities.

2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion)

Roman abramovich's yacht "eclipse" anchors in turkiye's bodrum.

In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the world’s second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich , the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdom’s sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield, and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the ocean’s surface.

1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion)

History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysia’s richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-karat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. If you see it somewhere, let us know.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is Jeff Bezos’s yacht?

Jeff Bezos' Multi-Million Dollar Yacht Arrives In Florida

This is why people like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos work to keep their yachts out of the public eye. Though we are not including Jeff Bezos’s yacht, Koru (Maori for “coil”), in this list because it is a sailing yacht and thus excluded from the realm of these motor yachts, it created controversy in the Netherlands when its presence became known. Jeff Bezos’s abided the $500 million price tag of Oceanco, the Dutch custom yacht builder, to create the 417-foot megayacht. But when the company, at Bezos’s behest, requested that a local bridge be dismantled to make way for its gigantic mast on its journey from the shipyard, public sentiment turned against the cento-billionaire, and Oceano shelved its request. Maybe a port like Monaco would be more accommodating?

Who owns the largest private yacht?

Also not on this list is the world’s largest private yacht, reportedly owned by Alisher Usmanov. Though size and cost typically scale in the world of superyachts, this is not always the case (see #1 in this list.) Also, Somnio, the 728-feet dream-monikered yacht liner that tops our list of the world’s largest private yachts , isn’t quite done being constructed. And it is not, like most of the largest superyachts, privately owned by one individual or family—it’s a kind of floating condo, with 39 eight-figure homes available to potential owners solely by invitation.

Fact Check: NO Evidence Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg Is Worth '$42 Million'

Is Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg worth $42 million? No, that's not true: There is no proof in a social media post for the vast wealth purported to be Bragg's. His most recent publicly available financial disclosure forms do not reveal ownership of 12 properties, eight cars or three luxury yachts.

The claim appeared in a post on Facebook on May 30, 2024. It opened:

Net Worth: $42 Million His Net Worth Has Grown 300% In The Past 5 Years He Owns 12 Properties, 8 Cars and 3 Luxury Yachts How did DA Bragg Become So Wealthy

This is what the post looked like on Facebook at the time of writing:

Screen Shot 2024-06-05 at 12.50.43 PM.png

(Source: Facebook screenshot taken on Wed Jun 5 20:23:46 2024 UTC)

According to the eight-page public Conflicts of Interest Board report (archived here ) for 2022 for Bragg , the district attorney for Manhattan (archived here ), he has a salary, investments/pensions, two properties and no yachts or cars claimed. Here is the list of items declared:

Income $100,000 - $249,999.99

Dividends/distributions from a Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association account $5,000 - $54,999.99

Retirement plan distributions from the City University of New York $5,000 - $54,999.99

Individual Retirement Account $60,000 - $99,999.99

Individual Retirement Account $100,000 - $249,000

Individual Retirement Account $250,000 - $499,999.99

Charles Schwab managed account $5,000 - $54,999

Interest in A Trust Or Estate $500,000 or more -- This included the description, "Money that was in a bank account for the estate of my late mother."

2 properties, no yachts, no luxury cars

There are two properties listed, not 12, in his financial statement. The value listed for the one in New York was $500,000 or more. His note said:

This property, which was sold in 2022, was owned by my late mother. I am the beneficiary of my mother's estate.

The second property had a market value of $100,000.00 to $249,999.99 and is located in Virginia. The form stated:

This property was owned by my late grandmother, who predeceased my late mother. It appears that the property is jointly owned by my uncle and my mother's estate. An attorney for the estate is examining this matter.

There are no disclosures for yachts or luxury vehicles and no evidence is provided by the post to back up the claims of luxury item ownership.

New York City's property ownership records, usually seen via the Automated City Register Information System (ACRIS) were unavailable for review at the time this fact check was researched and written, because of scheduled maintenance.

Idris Elba narrating a National Geographic series about the millions of soldiers erased from World War II history and the action-comedy-romance “Hit Man” landing on Netflix are some of the new television, movies, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists : Dakota Johnson plays a woman questioning her sexuality in “AM I OK?,” Nigerian singer Tems’ debut album drops and the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld is spotlighted in a new six-part series for Hulu.

NEW MOVIES TO STREAM

— “Hit Man” is finally hitting Netflix. A charming and fun action-comedy-romance that’s based on a “somewhat true story,” “Hit Man” stars Glen Powell as a mild-mannered philosophy professor whose life takes a wild turn when he starts doing undercover work for the police as a fake hit man. It’s all costumes and fun and convictions until he meets the beautiful Madison (“Andor’s” Adria Arjona) and starts living a double life. Richard Linklater directed the film, which he co-wrote with Powell. A sensation at the fall film festivals, “Hit Man” was picked up by Netflix which seems like a good home for this, shielding it from any “box office disappointment” narratives. In my AP review, I got a bit hung up on some of the choices and logic but wrote that, “It’s perfectly enjoyable: a glossy, easy-to-digest Powell showcase that isn’t trying to be anything but fun.”

— Over on Max, Dakota Johnson plays a woman questioning her sexuality in “AM I OK?,” which begins streaming on Thursday. Johnson’s company TeaTime Pictures helped produce the film directed by Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne and co-starring Sonoya Mizuno. Around the film’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022, Johnson spoke to the AP about what drew her to the project. “There were a few things that I loved, but I think it was the idea of a woman in her 30s still figuring out who she is,” Johnson said. “I loved the idea of somebody being afraid of their sexuality and the truth of it. And then the female friendship aspect: I liked that sort of more intense subject matter was infused in a sort of buddy comedy.”

NEW MUSIC TO STREAM

— Before she even released her debut album – “Born in the Wild,” which releases Friday, June 7 — Nigerian singer Tems won a Grammy . (That was for her contributions to the Future track “WAIT FOR U,” which also featured Drake.) She’s been nominated for an Oscar, having co-wrote “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” as performed by Rihanna . And she co-wrote “Move” from Beyoncé’s “Renaissance.” The accolades are many — and on “Born in the Wild,” deserved. The R&B, pop, and Afrobeats performer marries all of her influences here, starting with the lead single and love letter to Lagos, “Love Me JeJe.”

— In 2024, the avant-garde pop performer Charli XCX is returning to the raves of her youth. It’s a funny statement to make about a 31-year-old super producer/songwriter/hitmaker, but it’s the truth. “Brat,” her fourth full-length release, amplifies Charli XCX’s Y2K-era obsessions, like on the single “Von Dutch,” with its early-aughts references and showboating filtered through futuristic PC Music-style production, or her contemporary IT girl anthem “360.” (A choice lyric from the chorus: “I’m everywhere/I’m so Julia,” she sings, a reference to model/actor/memoirist Julia Fox .) Turn it up, smell the smoke machine, feel the sweat.

— On Friday, June 7, one of the most exciting voices in contemporary country music, Carly Pearce , will deliver a new album, “Hummingbird.” It is her first since 2021’s “29: Written in Stone,” a continuation of her EP “29,” which chronicled her divorce from singer-songwriter Michael Ray. That’s important to note, because it gives additional context to this release: Still concerned with grief and loss, but now energized by a new sense of autonomy and hope, Pearce’s songwriting is as sharp as ever. The title track is deeply-felt bluegrass; “fault line” recalls ’70s country a la Tammy Wynette and George Jones . She also co-produced the album with collaborators Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne.

— There is no shortage of great music documentaries flooding Paramount+, and on Tuesday, another will be added to the list. “Let the Canary Sing” is a feature-length doc on Cyndi Lauper , exploring her rise to fame, her political activism, and most crucially of all, her hits. Because “Time After Time,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” “All Through the Night,” am I right?

NEW SHOWS TO STREAM

— The National World War II Museum says Black men and women served in every branch of the armed services during World War II, yet their stories are largely untold. Two new documentaries debut Monday on National Geographic that highlight their service. “Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color” is executive produced and narrated by Idris Elba. “The Real Red Tails,” narrated by Sheryl Lee Ralph, recaps the discovery of a WWII-era Tuskegee airmen plane in Lake Huron, Michigan. Both stream next day on Hulu and Disney+.

— A ninth season of “Below Deck Mediterranean” sails onto Bravo on Monday with a 75-minute premiere episode. Aboard a luxury charter yacht led by Capt. Sandy Yawn and her chief steward, Aisha Scott, cameras catch the crew’s conflicts with each other while they also cater to their guests. The show streams the next day on Peacock.

— Since her release from prison in late December for conspiring to kill her abusive mother, Gypsy Rose Blanchard has remained in the public eye. She’s walked red carpets, been the topic of tabloid gossip and even met Kim Kardashian. Lifetime cameras have followed Rose as she acclimates to freedom in a new docuseries, “Gypsy Rose: Life After Lockup” debuts Monday.

— In a new FX limited series called “Clipped,” Ed O’Neill (“Modern Family”, “Married with Children”) plays former Clippers team owner, Donald Sterling, who was recorded making racist comments that were leaked to TMZ. It led to Sterling stepping down as owner of the Clippers and to being banned for life by the NBA. “Clipped” also stars Laurence Fishburne as Doc Rivers and Jacki Weaver as Sterling’s wife, Shelly. The series is based on an ESPN 30-for-30 podcast called “The Sterling Affairs.” “Clipped” debuts Tuesday on Hulu.

— Daniel Brühl is already getting positive reviews from critics for his portrayal of late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld in a new six-part series for Hulu premiering Friday, June 7. “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” focuses on Lagerfeld’s rise in the fashion world as designers of Chloé and Fendi. The series also doesn’t shy away from Lagerfeld’s complex legacy because besides his contributions to fashion, he also made contentious remarks around the #MeToo movement, same sex marriages and plus-size models.

— The NHL has its answer to the Puppy Bowl with its first Stanley Pup game airing on the NHL Network. The Stanley Pup will feature rescue dogs representing the 32 NHL teams. The 16 dogs representing the teams that are playing in the hockey playoffs will compete for the Stanley Pup. The “Stanley Pup” will air in the U.S. on Friday, June 7 at 8 p.m. ET on NHL Network and ESPN+ and on Sportsnet in Canada on Saturday, June 8 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

— Candice Carty-Williams has adapted her popular 2019 novel “Queenie” for television. It follows Queenie Jenkins, a Jamaican Brit living in South London recovering from a bad breakup and trying to navigate her mid-twenties. The show stars Dionne Brown as Queenie along with British R&B musician Bellah, Samuel Adewunmi, Michelle Greenidge and Joseph Marcell. “Queenie” premieres Friday, June 7 on Hulu.

NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY

— You can head to a galaxy far, far away with Zynga’s Star Wars: Hunters . In the hottest sport on the planet Vespaara, teams of four battle it out with their blasters and lightsabers. The gladiators include droids, Wookiees, Jawas and even a few ordinary humans from both the Dark and Light sides of the Force. The arenas range from a lush Ewok village to the desert planet Tatooine to the surface of a Death Star. The core game is free to download and play on mobile devices, though of course Zynga is hoping you’ll shell out for costumes and season passes. Join the fray Tuesday on Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android.

MicroStrategy and Its Founder to Pay $40 Million in Tax Fraud Lawsuit

Michael Saylor did not pay any income taxes to Washington despite living there from 2005 through 2020, the attorney general for the District of Columbia said.

Michael Saylor is talking with a headset mic on and his hand up.

By Lauren Hirsch

The attorney general for the District of Columbia reached a $40 million settlement with Michael Saylor and the software company he founded, MicroStrategy, in what the attorney general’s office said was the largest income tax fraud recovery in Washington history.

The settlement, which was announced on Monday , stems from lawsuits filed in 2021 and 2022 accusing Mr. Saylor of evading more than $25 million in income taxes in Washington. Mr. Saylor enlisted MicroStrategy’s help to file fraudulent forms from 2005 through 2020 that claimed he lived in either Virginia or Florida, states with significantly lower income tax rates, the attorney general’s office said; he did not pay income taxes to the district during that period.

MicroStrategy and Mr. Saylor deny any wrongdoing. They agreed to the $40 million settlement, which included interest and penalties, to avoid the expense and time of legal action, according to the settlement . Mr. Saylor, who is the executive chairman of MicroStrategy, stepped down as chief executive in 2022. As part of a separate agreement between Mr. Saylor and MicroStrategy, he has agreed to pay the full settlement amount, MicroStrategy said in a regulatory filing Monday.

“Michael Saylor and his company, MicroStrategy, defrauded the district and all of its residents for years,” Brian L. Schwalb, the attorney general, said in a statement. “Indeed, Saylor openly bragged about his tax-evasion scheme, encouraging his friends to follow his example and contending that anyone who paid taxes to the district was stupid.”

“As I stated at the time this case began, in 2012 I moved to Florida and made Miami Beach my home. Florida remains my home today, and I continue to dispute the allegation that I was ever a resident of the District of Columbia,” Mr. Saylor said in a statement. “I have agreed to settle this matter to avoid the continued burdens of the litigation on friends, family and myself.”

The lawsuit said that in 2012, “Mr. Saylor embarked on a scheme to fraudulently misrepresent himself to be a resident of Florida,” which has no personal income tax, and bought a house in Miami Beach, obtained a Florida driver’s license and registered to vote in the state.

Mr. Saylor founded MicroStrategy in 1989 and helped the firm become one of the largest corporate buyers of Bitcoin. That bet has been paying off: The price of Bitcoin has soared , and shares of MicroStrategy are up more than 100 percent this year, giving it a market value of $27 billion.

“As we said at the time this suit was filed, this was a personal tax matter involving Mr. Saylor. MicroStrategy was not responsible for his day-to-day affairs and did not oversee his individual tax responsibilities,” Shirish Jajodia, the company’s head of treasury and investor relations, said in a statement. “MicroStrategy has not made, and will not be obligated to make, a financial contribution to the settlement.”

This is not the first time that Mr. Saylor and MicroStrategy have been accused of fraud: In 2000, Mr. Saylor and two other MicroStrategy executives settled accounting fraud charges with the Securities and Exchange Commission for about $11 million.

The Washington tax lawsuit, brought by Karl Racine, the district’s former attorney general, was the first of its kind after an amendment in 2021 to the federal antifraud law, the False Claims Act, gave whistle-blowers the power to report on tax fraud in the city. That year, a whistle-blower filed a lawsuit against Mr. Saylor, and Mr. Racine followed up with the district’s own lawsuit in 2022.

The Biden administration has made cracking down on tax evasion by corporations and the wealthy a central part of its economic agenda , which includes billions to overhaul the Internal Revenue Service .

The lawsuit details Mr. Saylor’s life in the district, where he had bought three luxury condominiums atop a waterfront building in the Georgetown neighborhood from 2006 to 2008. While Mr. Saylor spent millions on renovations for the properties he would later coin the “Trigate,” he spent time on one of his yachts anchored in the Potomac River and at an another penthouse he allegedly owned in the Adams Morgan neighborhood, the lawsuit said.

To support its allegations, the lawsuit cited Mr. Saylor’s social media posts. In one, seemingly from the yacht he stayed on during the renovations, Mr. Saylor tagged his architect, James Van Wynen, and wrote: “Gazing wistfully at my future home while I wait for James to crack the whip on the contractors and herd the cats. I wonder if Tony Stark would be so patient”

In another, he wrote: “View from my Georgetown balcony this morning. Now I just need to finish renovating the apartment so I can move back in. For now maybe I pitch a tent outside on the terrace.”

MicroStrategy was aware of where Mr. Saylor spent his time; the lawsuit said that the company provided him with a security detail and drivers. In response to the investigations, MicroStrategy produced spreadsheets recording Mr. Saylor’s daily physical location from 2015 to 2020. They showed that Mr. Saylor “spent a majority or plurality of each year physically present in the district.”
