13 Best Sport Fishing Yachts of 2023

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • August 30, 2023

It is possible to fish from any type of boat, but a sportfishing yacht is purpose-built for angling aficionados to chase fish of all sizes and species, whether it’s fun fishing for mahi-mahi off the beach in South Florida or campaigning a pro-level crew from the Bahamas to Bermuda and back pursuing billfish during tournament season. The best sport-fishing yachts combine rugged, blue-water construction with performance, range, agile handling, and the comforts of luxury-yacht living. On the outside, sportfish yachts are notable for their dance-floor size cockpits for fish fighting; livewells to keep baits fresh; in-deck fish boxes to keep the catch stowed and cold; and an armada of rod holders for drift fishing, kite fishing or trolling. They also are known for big diesel horsepower and speed, sometimes north of 40-plus knots. Sportfish yachts are also known for luxurious interiors with supple leathers, granite countertops, high-end galley appliances and en suite staterooms. These are highly self-sufficient angling platforms geared for life beyond the horizon where the water is deep and the fish are big.

Top Luxury Fishing Boats

The following 13 sportfish yachts are all vessels we’ve reviewed. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Hatteras GT65 Carolina : A customizable sportfish yacht with Caterpillar diesels
  • Viking Yachts 64C : An eye-watering 42 knots of fish-chasing speed boat
  • Royal Huisman Project 406 : The biggest sportfish yacht ever built
  • Rybovich 94 : A superyacht-sized angler’s dream
  • Viking 38 Open : A family-sized express sportfisherman loaded for offshore fishing
  • Bertram 61 Convertible : A tournament-ready battlewagon with a distinct look
  • Hatteras Yachts 45EX : Entry-level sportfish yacht with all the angling amenities of its larger siblings
  • Huckins 45 Sportfisherman : Built for bluewater angling with the patented and sea-taming Quadraconic hull form
  • Jarrett Bay 46 : A mid-size custom-Carolina sportfisherman with a yacht-level finish
  • Viking Yachts 92 : Designed to travel the world’s oceans chasing behemoth billfish
  • Merritt 72 : An iconic Florida boatbuilder’s high-end fishing boat
  • Bertram 35 : This 35-foot flybridge sportfish pays homage to the builder’s legendary roots.
  • Viking 54 Open : This express-style fish boat also comes in a Sport Tower and Coupe version

Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina

The Hatteras Yachts GT65 Carolina falls in the middle of the New Bern, North Carolina, boatbuilder’s three-model GT lineup, which also includes a GT59 and GT70 . This sportfish yacht has a solid-fiberglass hull bottom built for blue-water duty and comes with a variety of diesel engine options, which starts with twin 1,622 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels.

Like all Hatteras GT models, the GT65 has notable bow flare to beat back tempestuous seas as well as a high freeboard to keep decks dry in the slop. The Hatteras GT65 also represent a design evolution for the series with a “stepped-back flybridge” an element found on in earlier Hatteras models, as well as a new window treatment and hull-side vents. With yacht-level luxury on the inside and a fishing-mission design on the outside, the Hatteras Yachts GT65 is a formidable sportfish boat.

Quick Specifications

Viking yachts 64c.

With its 180-square-foot, dance-floor-size, teak cockpit, options for a fighting chair or rocket launcher, a mezzanine perched perfectly for spotting prey in the spread and enough livewell space to keep a gaggle of goggle-eye baits frisky, the 42-knot Viking Yachts 64C is built for battle with big fish. Its impressive speed, which comes via optional 2,022 hp MTU M96X V-12 diesels , ensures that the Viking 64C is likely to be first boat with lines in the water. Cruise speed: 36 knots at 80 percent engine load. (Base powerplants are twin 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels.) For the traveling tournament crew, the Viking 64C has four staterooms, including three en suite guest staterooms, plus a crew cabin with upper and lower bunks.

Royal Huisman Project 406

A 171-foot sportfisherman? Yes. That’s exactly what the six-deck, Royal Huisman’s Project 406 is. The interior and exterior design of Project 406 is from noted Dutch yacht-design firm Vripack . Vripack calls the vessel a “sportfisher on steroids.” The hull and superstructure of the supersize sportfish is Alustar aluminum, a material known for its strength and relatively light weight.

Even with six decks, Vripack has managed to create sleek lines for Project 406. It starts with a high freeboard forward that seemingly dares the ocean to approach. Transitioning from the bow, the sheerline slopes downwards in a steady cadence. The flowing sheerline resolves seamlessly at the cockpit. The vessel’s raked house and stacked deck are juxtaposed against the long profile, creating a sinewy aesthetic, which is no simple feat in this 171-footer. Add in all of the expected angling accouterments and 30-knot speed, and you have a sportfish yacht ready to chase fish around the world.

Rybovich 94

Size, speed and agility is a unique trifecta in a sportfish boat, but the 94-foot, 41-knot III Amigos from Michael Rybovich checks all those boxes as well as a few more too. The sportfish boat , designed by Patrick Knowles with naval architecture from Dusty Rybovich, is built in cold-molded mahogany. Prop pockets help keep the boat’s half-load draft down to a Bahamas-friendly 5 feet. The Rybovich 94’s impressive speed is helped by a pair of beefy 2,600 hp MTU diesels .

The owner of II Amigos also owns a 196-foot Feadship superyacht and, while he wanted the sportfish to be all business on the outside, he wanted luxury-yacht finishes on the inside.  “Subtle but telling touches are the solid doors to the staterooms; each mimics the owner’s Feadship with ¾-inch thickness. The doors close flush (each has hidden hinges), and the sound is of a Rolls-Royce door closing.”

Rybovich 94

Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish

The Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish is the builder’s entry point to its diesel-propelled sportfish boats. An owner-operator-size angling platform, the 38 Open is powered with twin 550 hp Cummins QSB6.7 diesels, which gives the sportfish boat 36-knot speed. Notable angling features on board the 38 Open include a 109-swqure-foot cockpit, complete with a mezzanine seating flanking the centerline stairs to the bridge deck as well as a laminated backing plate foe either a fighting chair or a rocket launcher. For overnight canyon trips, there is a forepeak stateroom with a double bunk as well as a single above it. Additionally, the salon’s sofa converts to a berth for guests or crew. The galley is outfitted with Corian countertops, two-burner electric cooktop, microwave/convection oven and drawer-style refrigerators and freezers. Some options include a Palm Beach Towers tuna tower and electronics packages from Atlantic Marine Electronics , both are Viking Yachts’ subsidiaries.

Viking Yachts 38 Open Billfish

Bertram 61 Convertible

Bertram’s 61 Convertible leads the builder’s offshore series, which also includes a 35 Convertible and the express-style 50 Sport . Like its 50 Sport sistership, the 61 Convertible has a stepped sheerline, a nod to the legendary boatbuilder’s earlier designs. It also creates an instantly recognizable profile. The 61 Convertible is ready to run out of the box thanks to its twin 1,925 hp Caterpillar C-32A diesels. Top hop is 44 knots.

When it comes to chasing fish, the 61 Convertible has 188 square feet of fish-fighting space. A 100-gallon in-transom livewell is accompanied by twin in-sole fish boxes as well as rod stowage to port and starboard. A tuna door to starboard makes bringing in that bigeye on board a breeze. (Fish not included.) The accommodations layout belowdecks includes three staterooms. There is a full-beam master stateroom amidships.

Bertram 61 Convertible

Hatteras Yachts GT45X

The Hatteras Yachts GT45X express sports twin 1,150-horsepower Cat C18 ACERT diesel engines that deliver 40-plus-knot speeds. During our sea trial, the GT45X showcased remarkable handling, gracefully leaning into turns without any loss of power from the props. Hatteras has equipped the GT45X with a custom-engineered, sound-deadening system. This feature reduces noise and vibration, ensuring a relatively quiet ride for all aboard. Inside, the yacht has a luxe sensibility with its wood sole, sumptuous leather seating, a fully equipped galley and a spacious forward stateroom. On deck, there are two comfortable helm seats, an undercounter fridge, an ice maker, an inviting L-shaped settee and a table, creating the perfect entertainment area for relaxing after a successful day of fishing. The integrated hardtop enhances visibility with its one-piece windshield and large side windows, offering optimal views of the surrounding waters. To adapt to changing weather conditions, simply install clear curtains across the bridge deck aft, transforming the GT45X into an all-season sport-fisherman. Personalization is key with Hatteras Yachts, and the GT45X offers a variety of optional features. From a bow thruster and additional stateroom to teak accents and a flybridge option, you can customize your yacht to meet your specific needs. With a simple ala carte ordering process, just select your must-have options, start the engines and have your next angling adventure.

Hatteras Yachts GT45X

Huckins 45 Sportfisherman

The Huckins 45 Sportfisherman starts with the Florida boatbuilder’s patented Quadraconic hull . The Huckins’ Quadraconic name derives from four conical projections that make up the bottom surface shape. The sport-fisher has a deep forefoot and some measurable flare above the waterline for good buoyancy and dry running. A single chine rises from the waterline and then descends quickly to optimize spray control. The deep-V shape forward warps to a flat running surface far aft for efficient planing and excellent roll resistance.

Power is twin 480 hp Cummins diesels, which give this sportfish boat an easy 28-knot cruise. Top speed is 35 knots, so a 30-knot cruise is easily an option. The owner of the 45 Sportfisherman we got aboard is an avid stand-up angler and set up his boat with three flush-deck insulated fish boxes with macerators, a Dometic ice maker, two 28-foot Rupp outriggers, six gunwale rod holders, saltwater and freshwater washdowns, and a four-rod rocket launcher in lieu of a fighting chair.

Huckins 45 Sportfisherman

Jarrett Bay 46

Originally named Persistence, this Jarrett Bay 46 was built for fishing enthusiast and NASCAR driver Jeff Burton. When creating his fully custom sportfish boat, Burton noted that his vessel would be both a fishing boat and a family boat. Fishing features include an in-transom fish box, a sailfish pod, insulated fish boxes and a tuna door (sans bridge) in the cockpit. Jarrett Bay installed three rod holders in each gunwale and six more across the flybridge rail, plenty of rod room for setting up a trolling spread. With upper and lower helm stations (the latter being an owner request), the Jarrett Bay 46 also gives the skipper options if the weather goes south. The Jarrett Bay 46 has ZF pod drives with underwater exhaust paired to twin 575 hp Caterpillar C9 diesels. At a comfortable 2,000-rpm cruise, this sport-fisher makes about 26 knots while those diesels consume 41 gallons per hour. Dial it up to a top-end speed of 35 knots and consumption goes up to 58.3 gph.

Jarrett Bay 46

Viking Yachts 92

The Viking Yachts 92 is the largest sport-fisher the New Gretna, New Jersey-based boatbuilder has ever constructed. Offered with an open- or enclosed-bridge setup, the hefty sportfish boat (displacing around 205,000 pounds) hits 37-knots-plus when powered with optional 2,600 hp MTU diesels. At 2,100 rpm, this battlewagon cruises easily at 31 knots at 78 percent engine load. Dial it back to 28 knots, and engine load is a mere 70 percent. The 92-footer is also agile thanks to the Viking Independent Programmable Electrohydraulic Rudder (VIPER) steering system, a fly-by-wire setup that lets the helmsman control each rudder individually.

From an angling perspective, the 92 has 55-foot Rupp outriggers , fish stowage large enough for a wolf pack of bigeye tuna, space for a season’s worth of baits, secured gaff stowage and enough tackle drawers to handle all the lures and terminal gear an owner could ever buy. The Viking 92 also has six staterooms to accommodate owners, guests and crew for tournament season and long-haul adventure angling.

Viking Yachts 92

Like some of the other names on this list, Merritt is an iconic Pompano Beach, Florida-based, custom sportfish builder with a current model lineup that includes 66-, 72- and 86-foot convertible designs. The Merritt 72 is a model that has stood the test of time, and one that owners flock to year in and year out, for its fishability, seakindly nature and the ability to tailor the layout to an owner’s angling needs.

Because these boats are custom-built, the specifics can change from one 72 to another, but 30-knot cruise speeds and nearly 40-knot top-end speeds are common in all 72s, as are massive cockpits for fighting Hemingway-worthy marlin, stout construction for chasing those fish in the blue water and superyacht-level finishes inside and outside.

Merritt 72

The entry point into Bertram’s three-model Offshore Series⎯spanning from 35 to 61 feet length overall⎯the Bertram 35 blends a familiar profile with modern power and technology to create a 36-knot angling juggernaut. This owner-operator-sized, Michael Peters -penned, flybridge sport-fisher starts with a wave-slicing, deep-V hull form with 22 degrees transom deadrise. The form is supported by a solid fiberglass hull bottom with cored hull sides for added strength without added weight.

The 35 has a 126-square-foot cockpit ready for any fish-fighting fanatic. Bertram sets up the 35 with rod holders, a livewell, in-deck fish boxes, and a transom door for the big ones. Optional teak decking and covering boards add a custom look. Inside, the salon is accented with teak and maple Amtico soles and overhead dimmer lighting. A wainscot-style ceiling houses rod stowage for big-game gear. Power is twin 500 hp Caterpillar C7.1 diesels matched to ZF drives. At a comfortable 27.5-knot cruise at just 68 percent engine load, the Bertram 35 has a 253-nautical-mile range, making it easily canyon-capable.

Bertram 35

Viking Yachts 54 Open

Many anglers like open- or express-style sportfish designs as they enable the captain and crew to keep in close proximity, and the Viking 54 Open , which also is offered in a Sport Coupe or Sport Tower, does just that. The 54 Open’s bridge deck has a Palm Beach-style helm on centerline, flanked by a double-wide companion seat to port and a single seat to starboard. Abaft the helm and to port is U-shaped seating with a walnut table, creating a respite from the sun on tournament day while still allowing the crew to keep an eye on the spread via the open after bulkhead. Across from that seating is an L-shaped settee.

With a focus on fishing, the 54 Open has 154 square feet of cockpit real estate. Two sets of mezzanine seats offer perches for the crew to watch the spread. Other fishing-friendly features include a transom livewell, an in-deck fish box to starboard (with an optional livewell tub), an insulated in-deck box to port, a deck plate for mounting a rocket launcher or fighting chair, cooler stowage in the mezzanine steps (a bait freezer in the steps is optional), and a tuna door. Power is either twin 1,400 hp or 1,550 hp MAN diesels. For owners who prefer a three-sided fiberglass enclosure to a clear-plastic setup—but still want an open after bulkhead—Viking offers the 54 in the Sport Tower version. The 54 Sport Coupe model closes the after bulkhead, completely protecting the bridge deck from the elements.

Top Sportfishing Boats For Sale In 2023

By Robert Bowman | Posted On Dec 09, 2022 Updated On Sep 12, 2023

The popularity of offshore fishing has never been greater as many billfish tournaments are seeing record participation. In 2022, the White Marlin Open had over 400 boats participate while the Big Rock Blue Marlin saw record payouts from 266 boats. Because of the surge in new boat owners we have seen recently and the passion that the sport holds, the market has been lower-than-average in terms of available inventory. Late-model, well-maintained boats typically have moved very fast, sometimes even coming under contract before hitting the market and selling for more than the asking price.

As we enter 2023, more boats are becoming available and the U.S. yacht brokerage market overall has seen an over 40% increase in listings. United Yacht Sales has a team of expert brokers that specialize in this segment of the market. If you're looking for a sportfishing boat for sale , or want to sell your existing one, contact us today at 1-772-463-3131  and we will connect you with the right broker for your specific needs. We also have experts on our team that specialize in the sale and build of custom sportfishing yachts .

This list of top sportfishing boats on the market today will be continually updated throughout 2023 :

A sportfishing boat, also known as a sportfisher, is built for the purpose of chasing and catching fish. This does not mean that sportfishers lack in living accommodations, quality finish work and style.

Sportfishers generally range from around 32 to 100-feet or so. Most are powered by twin inboard engines. Over the years sportfishers have increased in speed and comfort. Many now cruise at 40-knots and are equipped with stabilizers and sonars.

When purchasing a sportfisher, you can tailor the boat to match your preferred fishing application and style. You can embark on building a new custom boat (we can help you through the process and are experienced in all stages of the build process) or refit a newly purchased pre-owned sportfisher.

Custom Yachts: Sportfishing's Wave of the Future

When it comes to customizing a sportfisher, the world is your oyster. Common upgrades and refits include: an Omni Sonar (that allows you to see what’s happening underwater in real time), stabilizers, fighting chairs, helm chairs, LED lighting systems, HVAC and refrigeration packages, interior carpet and upholstery, Wi-Fi and satellite communication, marine electronics, engine room cameras and forward-looking infrared, satellite boat monitoring and much, much more.

Depending on its size, a sportfisher will likely have several staterooms and heads, a galley, along with dining and lounging areas. The back deck of a sportfisher is known as the cockpit.

The cockpit of a sportfisher is generally appointed with seating area and everything you need for fishing. Rod holders, bait tanks, tackle stations, even coolers and drink boxes.

The flybridge of a sportfisher provides numerous advantages. Allowing captains and owners to drive from “up top,” gaining a better view of the spread while running bridge teasers and lowering outriggers. Some sportfishers take this a step further with the installation of a tower that often includes a second station for operation from even higher.

The terms convertible is used to describe boats that easily and seamlessly “convert” between fishing and lounging. This term aptly describes the luxury, comfort, and versatility that a sportfisher brings to the table.

Center console boats are extremely popular, versatile platforms that allow owners to combine speed, lounging, comfort, style and fishability. Center consoles range in size from around 18 feet to more than 65-feet. Modern, larger center consoles include many features of a yacht.

A center console vessel gets its name from the driving station that’s mounted in the console in the center of the boat. Typically, you can walkaround the consoles, fishing or relaxing from dedicated spaces in the bow or stern.

The Case for Buying a Regulator

Center consoles offer a variety of benefits:

  • Compared to sportfishers and yachts, they are more portable (easier to take out of the water and transport overland) and easier to maintain.
  • Because center consoles feature fewer complex systems than sportfishers, they cost less to operate and maintain.
  • Center consoles are faster than sportfishers. This allows center consoles to cover more ground, faster than larger inboard vessels. This offers advantages for certain types of fishing and boating applications.

In recent years advances in outboard engine technology has allowed manufacturers to produce larger vessels that offer more performance and features than ever. The last decade has been something of a golden age in the offshore center console market. The fishability, comfort and systems included today’s high performance center consoles can rival anything on the water. Larger, modern center consoles commonly feature full heads and conditioned sleeping spaces below deck.

Because center consoles come in all shapes, styles and price points, Kusler Yachts can help you find one that exactly suits your needs. We can help you navigate the markets for new and used center consoles and evaluate the benefits of boats of various sizes and power packages. You’ll also want to consider where you plan to keep (and how you will store) the boat and what type of services are available there.

Dual Console boats are the fastest growing boat market segment in the United States. This rapid growth can be attributed to the versatile, multifaceted nature of the boat. Dual consoles typically offer a wide array of family-friendly amenities to support cruising, grilling, lounging and fishing applications. Ranging in size from the low 20s to the upper 30s, dual consoles combine the amenities and comfort of an express style boat with the benefits of a center console.

Many dual consoles are equipped with a full head in one console and berthing areas enclosed within the other. These days, many manufacturers are installing electric grills, sliding sunshades and several live wells in the dual console offers. There is much to like about the motor yacht. Typically, larger vessels, motor yachts are designed for recreational use. They may be powered by one or two engines.

Motor yachts typically range from 40’ to around 100-feet and offer many of the same luxuries and amenities you’d expect in a home. Built for comfort and range rather than speed, motor yachts typically offer ample fuel capacity, long range cruising ability and some ability to support fishing applications.

Guide to Bringing your boat to Mexico

As motor yachts increase in length, so too do the number of staterooms and heads they contain. In addition to sleeping quarters, motor yachts have large galleys, dining areas, and plenty of space of lounging and entertaining. Typically, a motor yacht’s back deck is open—making it an ideal space for relaxing, hosting, dining or enjoying the sunset. Many motor yachts also have the option to be operated inside or from a station on the helm deck that acts as a “second level” of the boat.

Modern motor yachts are now highly stylized, offering the pinnacle of luxury and comfort. Designer accommodations, high-end appliances, and plenty of space to entertain multiple small groups are now largely the standard.

fishing boats for yachts

Table of Contents

Choosing the best fishing boats from a very crowded field is no easy task, and if you plan to find a fishing boat rental so you can try before you buy, you’ll want to narrow your search down to some top picks ahead of time.

Among all the top fishing boat brands and all the different models on the market, each of the 10 on this list offers something special (listed from A to Z).

Explore All Available Fishing Boat Rentals

1. Carolina Skiff 21

carolina skiff 21

Carolina Skiffs are straightforward, simple boats, and that’s their greatest asset. They’re easy to run, easy to maintain, and easy to enjoy. Plus, with few systems aboard there’s little to go wrong.

The Carolina Skiff 21 comes in three flavors: an LS version that’s best for all-around utility, a SWS model designed for shallow-water fishing, and an Ultra Elite version that has additional creature comforts like wrap-around bow seating and illuminated stowage compartments.

2. Cobia 220 CC

cobia 220 cc

Anglers with young children will love the Cobia 220 CC for its high sides and deep interior, which are great for containing the kids. On top of that it offers all the fishing accouterments you could hope for, like multiple flush-mounted rodholders, a 50-gallon fishbox, under-gunwale rod racks, and a 26-gallon livewell.

3. Crestliner 1700 Storm

crestliner 1700 storm

When it comes to finding the best fishing boats made for lakes and reservoirs, aluminum rigs like the Crestliner 1700 Storm often lead the pack. Highlights include integrated tackle and rod stowage, a Humminbird PiranhaMAX 4 fishfinder, and a large aerated livewell.

But what sets it apart from the pack is its construction, featuring an all-welded hull , 0.10” thick hull bottom and hullsides, extruded aluminum ribs, and 1.25” strakes.

4. Key West 219 FS

key west 219 FS

Anglers looking for a 21-foot boat that runs fast but smooth in a choppy sea will want to try out the Key West 219 FS . This model features a stepped 19-degree/24-degree hull design that cuts through the waves better than an average V-hull.

The “FS” in the model name stands for “ forward seating,” so there are plenty of places to sit back and relax. Plus, there’s a head compartment in the console adding to the creature comforts aboard.

5. Mako Pro Skiff 17 CC

mako pro skiff 17 cc

Few fishing boat brands are as well known as Mako Boats, and their Pro Skiff line has been a huge hit since its introduction. Currently built in a 17-foot model (though previously built from 15’ to 19’), the Pro Skiffs have a unique “Advanced Inverted V” hull design that smooths out a chop while enhancing stability.

As a result, few boats their size feel as capable underfoot. Since the Pro Skiff 17 carries its beam all the way forward, it also has more deck space than most similarly-sized fishing boats.

6. Nitro Z19

nitro Z19

You want to blast to the bass at highway speeds, enjoy casting from a purpose-built bass fishing boat , and have enough onboard tackle stowage to fill the shelves of a bait shop? If so, a Nitro Z19 may be in your future.

This boat’s strongest suit may well be its forward casting deck , which offers gobs of space for multiple anglers because the design carries a wide 7’10” beam topsides, even though the hull bottom width is 6’2”.

7. Sportsman Masters 267 OE

sportsman masters 267 OE

If you’re looking for a big, bodacious bay boat, the Sportsman 267 OE will likely fit the bill. It’s 26’7” length and 9’2” beam provide gobs of room aboard, yet even with all this size the boat can still creep into a mere 1’3” of water.

Added bonus: this is one of the few bay boats around to come with a “coffin box” style fishbox in the bow, which not only has enough room for an entire school of fish inside but also has a chaise lounge on top.

8. Robalo R247

Robalo R247 2022

Many anglers believe that only center console boats qualify as the best fishing platforms, but family fishermen often disagree. The extra protection and comfort provided by a dual console like the Robalo R247 is a better choice for some people’s needs.

And this model in particular differentiates itself by adding unexpected perks like a wet bar, custom hard top options, and the ability to transform the bow seating area into a casting deck.

9. Sun Tracker Bass Buggy 18 DLX

Sun Tracker Bass Buggy 18 DLX

If you’ll be fishing in a lake, reservoir, or relatively protected waterway, and you like the idea of a fishing pontoon boat , the Sun Tracker Bass Buggy 18 DLX will prove ideal. Fishing features include a molded livewell, rod holders, and fore and aft fishing decks with pedestal chairs.

And although this isn’t the fanciest pontoon boat around it a has a different sort of ace up its sleeve: The Sun Tracker Bass Buggy 18 DLX costs a whole lot less than most fishing pontoons of its size and delivers a tremendous bang for the buck. As a result it’s proved quite popular over the years and you’ll see it pop up when looking for pontoon boat rentals .

Visit Sun Tracker Boats to learn more.

10. Yamaha 210 FSH Sport

Yamaha 210 FSH Sport

All of our other best fishing boats are propelled by propellers—but not this one. The Yamaha 210 FSH runs on jet power, thanks to a 1049cc TR-1 engine that blasts water out through a 155mm high-pressure pump.

Handling is uber-sporty, too, almost like that of a personal watercraft (PWC) . If you want a jet boat turned fishing machine, this will be your pick.

Visit Yamaha Boats to learn more.

Which of these fishing boats will prove to be the prime choice for you and your needs? There’s only one way to find out: jump aboard some fishing boat rentals, and try these fishing machines out for yourself.

Why Choose a Sportsfish Yacht?

Avid fishermen, anglers and fishing enthusiasts should consider a sportsfish yacht if that is the sole purpose of the vessel. Whether it will be used for recreational fishing activities with your family and friends or world-class fishing tournaments for big prizes and bigger accolades, if you plan to be on the water exclusively to drop a line, a sportsfish yacht is the way to go.

Sportsfish yachts are outfitted with all the amenities needed for fishing, from outriggers and towers to live wells and fighting chairs, fish lockers and freezers and, of course, copious rod holders. But these yachts aren’t all fishing and no-frills. Depending on the size, many sportsfish yachts also feature main salons, galleys, staterooms and all of the amenities found on a motor yacht, with the added bonus of the fishing kit.

Sportsfish yachts are sometimes owned in tandem with larger motor yachts or superyachts as an added amenity, with the sole purpose of casting a line and reeling in the big one.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

fishing boats for yachts

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

fishing boats for yachts

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

fishing boats for yachts

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

fishing boats for yachts

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

fishing boats for yachts

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

fishing boats for yachts

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

fishing boats for yachts

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

fishing boats for yachts

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

fishing boats for yachts

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

fishing boats for yachts

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. A new fishing boat can take your angling expeditions to a whole different level. Fishing from shore is fun, but it often limits the water you can fish. A good fishing boat will allow you to access more water, use different techniques, get away from the crowds, and give you the freedom that only comes from having your own fishing boat. And besides that, fishing from a boat is fun. Pack a cooler with some drinks and food and enjoy a day catching fish and making memories with family and friends.

It has a capacity of more than 500 pounds, features two built-in rod holders, and allows you to get out to the fish in calm water conditions. What more could you ask for?

Features To Consider When Shopping For A New Fishing Boat

A fishing boat should be both dependable and durable. No matter what kind of fishing you’re doing, you’re liable to beat your boat up against rocks, docks, gravel shorelines, and whatever else you might encounter on the quest for a trophy fish. A good fishing boat is strong enough to up to whatever you put it through and keeps working no matter the conditions are

Beyond that, there are several key considerations you should make when searching for a good fishing boat. Do you want a small fishing boat that is lightweight and portable, or do you need something larger that will be able to fit all of your fishing equipment? What kind of water are you fishing? If you’re fishing fast-flowing rivers, you need something that will drift well, but if you’re fishing lakes, you need something that will get around easily. How many people do you plan to fish with? Some boats are small enough that they only fit one person. Do you want an inflatable fishing boat that you can break down for storage, or do you want an aluminum fishing boat that you’ll store in the shed? Have answers to these questions before pulling the trigger on a new watercraft.

Simplicity: The Jon Boat

A jon boat is a small aluminum fishing boat that typically has a flat or nearly flat bottom and a squared-off bow. A jon boat is about as basic as it gets. It doesn’t have many features, but will get the job done just fine for many anglers.

A jon boat often comes with bench-style seats. They aren’t good in fast water and will perform better on lakes. You can power your jon boat with a small motor. Look for jon boats with basic fishing features, like rod holders and storage compartments, to make fishing from it easy.

A jon boat isn’t particularly stable, especially in smaller sizes. Be prepared to get pushed around if you fish where waves are generated. You may have to do a fair bit of fishing while sitting down or risk falling off trying to stand up in rough surf. This is definitely not a boat that will always keep you comfortable, but a good jon boat is dependable and will allow you to fish where you want to fish without paying a lot for a fancy boat.

Portability: The Inflatable Fishing Boat

Owning a boat typically requires you to have space to store it. If you don’t have a garage or yard where you can keep it, an inflatable fishing boat is a good option—simply deflate for compact storage. To save time, you can inflate the boat at home and haul it to the water on top of your car or truck when it’s inflated, allowing you to hit the water quickly.

Because of their buoyancy, inflatable fishing boats sit high on the water with minimal draft. This means that you can go over shallow water and rock beds that a more traditional boat couldn’t. These are often good vessels for fishing rivers, because they’re easy to navigate. You can also use a small motor to jet around a lake with a good inflatable fishing craft without a hitch.

Maneuverability: The Belly Boat

A belly boat is a great option for fishing a quiet lake or pond. Also known as a float tube is an inflatable watercraft in which the user sits with lower legs immersed in the water. The boat is buoyed by either two inflated tubes, as in the case of a pontoon boat, or a u-shaped inflated float tube.

Belly boats only fit one angler at a time. They don’t include much in the way of storage. They can’t handle rough or even choppy, water. But they’re fun to fish from. Belly boats are portable and maneuverable. You can go anywhere, and some anglers say there’s no better way to fish stillwater. You will need to wear waders while fishing if the water is chilly.

On a Budget: What You Get for Less Than $85

You don’t need to buy a fancy boat to get on the water. A cheap fishing boat means you aren’t going to jet around large bodies of water quickly, you’re not going to have a lot of room, and you’ll have to use oars to power yourself. But you can get yourself away from the shoreline without spending a lot of money.

Q: What is the major danger of anchoring a fishing boat from the stern?

Never anchor your fishing boat from the stern. Boats are designed to go forward, and anchoring from the stern will prevent it from making necessary natural adjustments to the wind and current. That potentially allows the boat to fill with water and sink.

Q: How should you pass a fishing boat?

When you pass a fishing boat, do your best not to disturb it. Go slow and give a wide enough berth to avoid tangling any lines.

Final Thoughts: Best Fishing Boats

Buying a new fishing boat is an investment that can give you high returns. A fishing boat will get you to the fish wherever you are and have enough room to store all of your fishing gear. There are many different options available to you, from jon boats to inflatable rafts. Make sure you get a boat that works well in the water conditions you’re going to face. A good one won’t just be the envy of your friends, it will help you catch more fish.

Breaking News

Florida news | rep. carolina amesty notarized document that teacher says he never signed | special report, florida news, florida news | go inside research boat that studies florida’s overheated corals.

The Coral Reef II is docked in Miami on March 13, 2024. The research team left that morning for Key Largo.(Tampa Bay Times)

While you might first notice the glossy super yachts or a fishing trawler on the Miami River, there’s also an 80-foot vessel packed not with partiers, but scientists, trying to protect the coral offshore.

Bridget Coughlin, the CEO of the Chicago-based Shedd Aquarium, said their research vessel named the Coral Reef II is docked in Miami because of the diversity of marine life in the area.

“We teach climate change through empathy with animals,” said Coughlin. “If you talk about how otters are starving, that empathy for that otter is going to catalyze you to act.”

The vessel can go out to sea for three weeks at a time and can travel as far south as the Dominican Republic. The researchers study a plethora of animals including queen conch, endangered rock iguanas, sharks and climate change’s impact on the coral reef. From March through October, the crew often works days that stretch from 7 a.m. to midnight.

How to come aboard the research vessel

The Coral Reef II also acts as a live-in laboratory for aspiring marine biologists. High school and college students can go on a weeks-long journey that includes snorkeling in crystal-clear water with Caribbean reef sharks and working side-by-side with scientists. Chuck Knapp, a 30-year employee of Shedd and the head of conservation on the vessel, said he got his start that way.

Rep. Carolina Amesty notarized document that teacher says he never signed

“I was originally a high school marine biology student back on the boat as a 17-year-old in the late ‘80s so it’s been a thrill of a lifetime to come back,” Knapp, who gave a tour of the vessel in the video said.

This summer, high schoolers will be taking a trip to the Bahamas to learn about how to protect dolphins, snorkel shipwrecks and observe firsthand from Shedd’s shark research biologist.

Conducting research on coral reefs bleaching

One of the most unique parts of the vessel is its live well system, which consists of large built-in tanks at the front of the boat filled with seawater.

These mini aquariums are a safe harbor for wildlife that scientists are trying to study or move. The live well system makes it easy to scoop marine life like coral up, perform heat stress tests and return them back to sea in hours.

Ross Cunning, a coral biologist with Shedd, said researchers can use technology onboard to test how well the coral absorbs sunlight and observe what temperature and speed cause corals to bleach.

Mark Schick, the senior director of animal operations on the Coral Reef II research vessel owned by Shedd aquarium, dumps water overboard. (Tampa Bay Times)

Even two corals of the same species might bleach at different speeds, and they’re looking for the most heat tolerant coral, Cunning said.

Last summer he worked alongside South Florida research groups, like the University of Miami, the Coral Restoration Foundation, and Reef Renewal to test snippets of these baby corals in nurseries that have been growing in higher water temperatures.

“Finding interventions to boost the heat tolerance in coral reefs is more important than ever,” Cunning said. “But the most critical thing we need to do is stop climate change.

“All the research in the world will not boost coral heat tolerance enough to cope with oceans that continue warming. We must stop the root of the problem and stop greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible.”

Climate change and boat strikes are killing right whales. Stricter speed limits could help them

  • Emily Jones, Grist

This photo provided by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources shows a DNR boat crew assessing a dead juvenile right whale about 20 miles off Tybee Island, Ga., Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024. (Georgia Department of Natural Resources via AP)

This story was originally published by Grist . Sign up for Grist’s weekly newsletter here .

Amid a difficult year for North Atlantic right whales, a proposed rule to help protect them is one step closer to reality.

Earlier this month, a proposal to expand speed limits for boats — one of the leading causes of death for the endangered whales — took a key step forward: It’s now under review by the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, the last stage of federal review.

Fewer than 360 of the whales remain; only about 70 of them are females of reproductive age. Every individual whale is considered vital to the species’ survival, but since 2017 right whales have been experiencing what scientists call an “unusual mortality event,” during which 39 whales have died.

Human actions — including climate change — are killing them.

When the cause of a right whale’s death can be determined, it is most often a strike by a boat or entanglement in fishing gear. Three young whales have been found dead this year, two of them with wounds from boat strikes and the third entangled in gear. One of the whales killed by a boat was a calf just a few months old.

Climate change, meanwhile, has disrupted their food supply , driving down right whale birth rates and pushing them into territories without rules in place to protect them.

“Our impacts are so great right now that the risk of extinction is very real,” said Jessica Redfern, associate vice president of ocean conservation at the New England Aquarium. “To be able to save the species, we have to stop our direct human-caused impacts on the population.”

This is not the first time humans have driven North Atlantic right whales to the brink of extinction .

Their name comes from whaling: They were known as the “right” whale to hunt because they spend time relatively close to coastlines, often swimming slowly and near the surface, and they float when dead. They also yielded large amounts of the oil and baleen whalers were after. So humans hunted them to near extinction until it was banned in 1935.

Many of those same characteristics are what make right whales so vulnerable to human-caused dangers today. Because they’re often near the surface in the same waters frequented by fishing boats, harbor pilots, and shipping vessels headed into port, it’s easy for boats to collide with them.

“They’ve been called an urban whale,” said Redfern. “They swim in waters that humans are using; they have high overlap with humans.”

To reduce the risk of vessel strikes, ships over 65 feet long have to slow down during set times of year when the whales are likely to be around. In the southeastern U.S., the speed limits are in force during the winter when the whales are calving; off the New England coast, the restrictions are in place in the spring and summer when they’re feeding. Regulators can also declare voluntary speed restrictions in localized spots if whales are seen, known as dynamic management areas.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, in 2022 proposed expanding those restrictions in three ways.

First, the new rule would cover larger geographical areas. The protection zones would extend down the coast from Massachusetts to Florida at various times of year, instead of only applying in certain distinct areas.

Second, the change would apply the speed limits to smaller craft like fishing boats, rather than only ships over 65 feet.

Third, the new rule would make the speed restrictions — the temporary speed limits where whales have been spotted — in dynamic management areas mandatory.

Since NOAA published and gathered feedback on the proposed rule in 2022, whale advocates have been clamoring for the agency to implement it. Those calls have increased in recent months as dead right whales have washed up on beaches.

“There have been three deaths, and that has been really devastating this year, and two of them are related to vessel strikes,” said Redfern. “It’s just highlighted that absolute urgency, the necessity of getting this rule out.”

A leading boating industry group is speaking out against the expanded speed restrictions, arguing they could hurt small businesses in the recreational boating industry.

“We are extremely disappointed and alarmed to see this economically catastrophic and deeply flawed rule proceed to these final stages,” said Frank Hugelmeyer, president and CEO of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, in a statement. “The proposed rule is based on incorrect assumptions and questionable data, and fails to distinguish between large, ocean-crossing vessels and small recreational boats.”

Right whale scientists have documented in recent years that small, recreational boats can injure and kill right whales. At least four of the lethal vessel strikes since the current restrictions began in 2008 have involved boats smaller than 65 feet and thus not subject to that speed limit, according to Redfern.

NOAA estimated that, based on the size and placement of the propeller wounds, the boat that killed the months-old calf this year was between 35 and 57 feet in length — too small to fall under the existing speed restrictions, but subject to the new rule if it were to be implemented.

In his statement, Hugelmeyer also pointed to new marine technologies aimed at detecting right whales in the water to reduce vessel strikes without expanding the speed rules.

Scientists like Redfern remain skeptical, though.

The tech “offers a lot of promise,” she said, but the speed limits are proven.

“It’s really important, I think, that we rigorously evaluate the technology that’s proposed to make sure that it is going to achieve the same type of risk reduction that we see with the slowdowns in expanded areas,” she said.

Many groups, meanwhile, have raised concerns that offshore wind turbines could harm whales. There is no evidence of that, according to NOAA.

1 dead, 1 in hospital after boat capsizes in Hoover Reservoir

by WSYX Staff

The scene after two men were rescued from{ }Hoover Reservoir after their boat capsized on St. Patrick's Day. March 17, 2024 (WSYX){p}{/p}

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — One man is dead and another is in the hospital after a boat capsized in Hoover Reservoir.

Genoa Township Fire Chief Joe Ponzi told ABC 6 that the two people were reported missing just before 8 p.m. on Sunday after their boat capsized in the Hoover Reservoir

The two men were reportedly out fishing when their boat capsized, and they both 'may have had lifejackets on.'

Authorities rescued both men later on Sunday night, and both were taken to St. Ann's Hospital.

On Monday morning, officials confirmed to ABC 6 that one of the men has died.

Jason Milliken is the central district captain for parks and watercraft. He’s urging anyone looking to get into the water is to make a plan.

“What boat ramp you’re going to be located at, who’s going to be on board with you, yourself and somebody else, emergency contact information, where you’re going to be put in and put out adjust to plan for the family if something does happen, we have somewhere to go leave it at the house," he said.

Captain Milliken says there’s one item everyone on a boat should wear.

“Lifejackets are huge, I can’t emphasize that enough," he said. "They save lives so whether it’s 90 degrees out or about 25 like today. Have a life jacket and wear it on days like this."

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is investigating.
