"Hot Flash" is truly a one-of-a-kind Custom-Built Northern Bay Boats Downeast Sportfisherman!

In 2003 her owner started his extensive search for a boat to meet his specific needs and wants. He desired a boat that was economical, comfortable, and tough enough to withstand fishing in the rough sea conditions out of Galveston, Texas in the Gulf of Mexico. He also wanted a boat that was simple in design without a lot of flash and fluff, knowing that flash and fluff meant more maintenance and more to breakdowns. He couldn’t find a production-built boat that met his strict criteria. However, he had knowledge and experience in his past in building, rebuilding, and finishing out boats. So, he decided that building a custom boat was the only way for him to proceed to get exactly wan he wanted. Hence, the 11-year long journey began. 

In 2003, he purchased a new 36’ Northern Bay Boats hull and in 2014 he completed and commissioned “Hot Flash”. Northern Bay Boats specializes in building fast and seaworthy work and pleasure boats based on their original Downeast Maine Lobster boat hull designs. The Northern Bay’s are designed and used for Commercial and Pleasure Lobstering, Sportfishing, as well as Cruising Yachts for everyday use, whether work or pleasure. Their boats are designed and built to work comfortably in all kinds of sea conditions. They are known for their efficient cruise and top end speeds utilizing an economical single diesel engine.

“Hot Flash” is powered by a single Cummins ReCon Marine 450hp 6CTA430-2600 Diamond Series diesel engine and a ZF Marine Transmission, which were both installed in 2014 by Land & Sea Services, which is the leading Cummins Factory Authorized Dealer in Texas.

Most of her other equipment and machinery was new in 2013/2014.

Due to the owner's health she has had very little use since finished/commissioned in 2014. There are only 350 hours since finished. She had a new bottom job with zincs and the engine was serviced in January 2024.

She is truly a must see!

ACCOMMODATIONS:  This beautifully finished Northern Bay 36 is set up as a single stateroom galley up configuration with a dinette that make into a double berth. Nicely finished "Herreshoff" style with varnished cherry trim. and cabinets on white flat panels. Cabin soles are varnished teak and holly. There is an abundance of natural light and ventilation with 6 opening ports, 1 large and 2 smaller hatches, and in the salon numerous fixed opening windows. Lighting is numerous recessed overhead lights and then swivel style reading lamps at the berth and settee. Headroom is 6'5" in the salon and 6' 2 1/2" aft sections below increasing to 6'4"in stateroom. Starting forward is the private stateroom featuring an island queen berth, 78"x 54".  Below the berth there are deep drawers and additional storage under deck lockers port and starboard. A hanging locker to port and a bureau with four drawers to starboard. Next aft and to port is the enclosed head featuring a Vacuflush freshwater W.C. with  new  head hoses, straight vanity outboard with S/S sink, hot and cold pressure water with  new  water pressure pump and hoses, and gloss finished Corian countertop. Opposite to starboard is a separate stall shower compartment with seat. Up three steps to the wheelhouse with lower helm station, dinette and galley. The starboard side helm station has an adjacent side door, extra wide helm seat with storage under, and full vessel controls. Aft is the U-shaped dining settee with storage under and drop leaf pedestal table which will drop down to act as a filler making a double berth 53" in width and over 7'6" in length, along the inboard edge shortening 4'8" all the way outboard. Opposite is the galley with Corian countertop, deep double basin S/S sink and storage in several lockers and drawers. Also, a three burner electric stove with oven, and Isotherm Refrigerator/freezer, 12V DC/120V AC.

Good boat......brand is a FIN "Indiana" according to the registration card and coast guard plate. I don't know the year of manufacture, but eBay requires me to fill in something, so I guessed at 1988. Bottom isn't all beat up like some boats that have been used a lot in the rocks. Bottom on this one is relatively free from dents and gouges..........but it is a used boat, so there are signs of previous use. Unfortunately, the back seat was removed by a previous owner.....go figure! That will probably need to be replaced.....there's a wood deck board there now......see pics. Comes with extremely nice set of Caviness synthetic oars with cushioned grips, and a couple of life jackets. The oars plus the oar locks would cost you over $100.00 at Bass Pro Shops by themselves. Boat was last registered in 2014 in Wisconsin. This boat does NOT have an Illinois title......it came from Wisconsin. I have history going back two owners prior to me, so there won't be any issues getting it registered. I have never registered it or had it in the water......I also have a bass boat and bought this as an extra.....and I just don't use it. Nice boat for the weekend fisherman........price is $395.00. I live a little North and West of Rockford, IL......which is where you will need to come to pick this boat up. Delivery is available in roughly a 100 mile radius for an additional fee. Going to the beach in Northern California is a little more, let’s say, “interesting” this spring, as the sand in many places has been replaced with squishy, electric-blue carpets of jellylike sea creatures.

Sightings of the bizarre animals, known as Velella velella or “by-the-wind sailors,” run as far north as Tomales Bay and south as Monterey. “Millions dead down here in Monterey,” one person reported this weekend on Facebook . “Up and down the beach for as far as you can see in both directions.”

By-the-wind-sailors typically live and feed farther out in the Pacific. But some years around spring, the wind and likely warmer ocean waters drive them in spectacular numbers to the West Coast. They were out in force in Southern California last April, for example, and before that during the warm El Niño years of 2014 through 2016.

“During spring and early summer months, Point Reyes seaside visitors may come across thousands of by-the-wind sailors (Velella velella) stranded on the beach,” the Point Reyes National Seashore announced last week. “These blue jellyfish-like creatures use their translucent, triangular sails to free-float around the ocean. Their sailing routes are determined by prevailing winds, and a shift in these breezes can spell bad news for these little seafarers — if the wind is too strong in the wrong direction, they can get blown onshore and will die.”

Mass die-offs have occurred around Point Reyes and Muir Beach near San Francisco, covering shorelines in crunchy, translucent membranes the lackluster color of old toenails. Meanwhile, new hordes continue to wash up around Carmel and Monterey, causing one local on Facebook to wonder this weekend: “Blue guys? Can they be cooked and eaten? Collected for decoration? Kept as pets? I’m confused!” (Answers: No. Probably not. Definitely not. Yes, you are!)

The fresh fuel cassettes were delivered to Pevek by in special shipping containers along the Northern Sea Route in October by Rosatom’s fuel company TVEL and were immediately transferred aboard the FNPP. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov, is the Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - part of TVEL) in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The loading of fresh fuel cassettes is being carried out into the reactor on the starboard side of the FNPP. Refuelling of the second reactor is planned for 2024. “When carrying out work to transship the nuclear fuel, all necessary measures were taken to meet radiation safety requirements,” said Alexey Fedotov, chief engineer at PATEC. “Before loading them into the reactor, each of the 121 fuel assemblies passed strict acceptance control. After a thorough check by specialists, all assemblies are sequentially placed in the reactor using automated crane equipment.” The reloading operation is planned to be completed before the end of this year. Maxim Shamambaev, the head of nuclear safety for the FNPP, said the radiation background in the region did not change during the work and remained at the natural background level for Pevek.

The installation of the FNPP in Chukotka aimed to solve two key problems. First it was to replace the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which began operating in1974, as well as the Chaunskaya thermal power plant, which is already more than 70 years old. Second, it was to supply energy to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka - a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimskaya ore zone.

By the end of 2023, power generation to Pevek from the FNPP since it began operation in 2020 will total 200 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000.
