Brokerage Services and Fees: What You Need to Know When Choosing and Buying a Yacht

Buying a yacht is a significant investment that requires time and expertise. If you lack the knowledge and time, you may need a yacht broker to help you through the process. However, many people confuse the role of a yacht broker with that of a real estate broker. This article explores the role of a yacht broker and the fees associated with buying a yacht.

The Role of a Yacht Broker

Yacht brokers play a crucial role in yacht buying and selling transactions. They have the necessary knowledge and experience to guide clients through the process. Unlike real estate brokers, yacht brokers offer specialized services tailored to the unique needs of their clients. They help with yacht search, brand recommendation, market pricing analysis, condition checks, advertising, and transaction support.

Brokerage Fees

The commission paid to a yacht broker is typically around 10% of the transaction value. However, for yachts costing more than $10 million, the commission is not more than 10%. The commission is usually shared between the buyer’s representative and the seller’s representative on a 60/40 or 50/50 basis. The commission is specified in the agreement between the boat owner and the broker and is paid after the transaction is complete. This motivates the broker to invest in the sale, knowing that their reward depends on it.

Payment and Transaction Process

The payment process for buying a yacht involves two payments. The first payment, usually 10% of the vessel’s cost, is made at the time of purchase. The second payment, which is 90% of the vessel’s cost, is made when all the transaction documents are ready, and the boat is complete. The boat is then removed from the register (if it is a secondary market), and a Bill of Sale is issued. The Bill of Sale is the main document indicating ownership of the yacht, and it is used to register the yacht in the owner’s country or a charter company.

MOA Yacht Purchase Agreement

The MOA contract is the primary contract used in yacht purchases. This contract fully protects the buyer’s rights. It cannot be found or downloaded from the internet, but a broker can provide it upon request. It is essential to read the contract’s terms since it may contain clauses requiring payment of a commission, even if the yacht is not sold.

Brokerage Fees and Negotiation

Large brokerage firms have fixed rates, and negotiation is not usually possible. Small brokers may be more open to negotiation, but this rarely happens since the brokerage community frowns upon it. A drop in one broker’s percentage can lead to a general drop in the market percentage, which is not desirable. Regular clients may receive preferential terms, but becoming a regular client requires owning several yachts.

Choosing and buying a yacht can be an overwhelming task. Working with a yacht broker can simplify the process and ensure a smooth transaction. The brokerage fees are usually around 10% of the yacht’s cost, and they cover a wide range of services, including advertising, condition checks, and transaction support. Before signing any contracts, it is crucial to read and understand the terms, including any clauses requiring payment of a commission, regardless of whether the yacht is sold or not.

41m Horizon motor yacht Homecoming newly listed for sale

The 41.4-metre Horizon motor yacht Homecoming has been newly listed for sale with John Slate and Nellie Horvath of Northrop & Johnson .

Delivered by the Taiwanese shipyard in 2010, the custom-built yacht marks the fifth hull in Horizon’s Premier Series and has had two owners and no charter history. Exterior design is the work of Espinosa Yacht Design , while naval architecture and interior design were handled in-house.

The tri-deck accommodates 12 guests across six cabins, including a main-deck master suite with a king-size bed, his-and-hers baths, a large central shower, a Jacuzzi tub and an adjoining sitting room/office. Meanwhile, the VIP suite with a king berth is found on the lower deck along with two singles and two cabins with queen berths.

Dark premium wood, marble surfaces and hand-woven carpets create a timeless interior, brought to life by a circular staircase with a skylight amidships. On the main deck, guests can benefit from the formal dining room for 10 and an expansive saloon with a full-service bar. Meanwhile, a large table for al fresco dining and a built-in sofa feature on the wide aft deck.

Up top, the upper deck is comprised of a forward helm, captain's suite and skylounge that opens onto a spacious aft deck. The flybridge features everything from a custom helm, outdoor galley, seating area, full bath, sauna, sunpad and infinity-edge Jacuzzi.

The spacious bow area and swim platform provide easy access to the water.

The yacht for sale is powered by MTU 8V 4000 M70 1550 hp diesel engines, and she cruises  at 10.5 knots and reaches a top speed of 16.5 knots. Her stability is ensured by large fin stabilizers, American Bow Thruster bow and stern thrusters, and five-blade ZF bronze propellers.

Homecoming is asking $7,995,000.

Elon Musk mocks Mark Zuckerberg's big hydrofoil swag moment, says he prefers to work instead of having fun on yachts

• Elon Musk has weighed in on Mark Zuckerberg's latest viral stunt.
• The Meta CEO posted a video of himself hydrofoiling while wearing a tuxedo. Musk wasn't impressed.
• "May he continue to have fun on his yachts. I prefer to work," Musk said of the video.

Mark Zuckerberg may have wowed his fans with a badass video of himself hydrofoiling on Independence Day, but Elon Musk certainly doesn't seem impressed.

"May he continue to have fun on his yachts. I prefer to work," Musk wrote in an X post in response to the video .

Zuckerberg went viral on Thursday after he posted a video of himself surfing on a hydrofoil to Facebook and Instagram. In the clip, the Meta CEO can be seen waving an American flag and taking sips from a can of beer, all while dressed to the nines in a tuxedo.

"Happy birthday, America!" Zuckerberg captioned his post.

Representatives for Musk and Zuckerberg didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from BI sent outside regular business hours.

This, of course, isn't the first time Musk has thrown shade at his tech-world nemesis.

In June 2023, Musk challenged Zuckerberg to a cage match following reports that said Meta was building an X rival .

Zuckerberg initially agreed to the request but brushed aside the proposal after months of back and forth. Musk, however, hasn't forgotten about the fight.

"If only Zuckerberg were as tough (sigh). I've offered to fight him any place, any time, any rules, but all I hear is crickets," Musk said in an X post on May 15, a day after Zuckerberg celebrated his 40th birthday .

Zuckerberg isn't the only yacht-owning billionaire that Musk has accused of being a slouch.

In 2021, Musk made a similar remark about his fellow space baron, Jeff Bezos . The SpaceX CEO told the Financial Times in an interview then that Bezos should spend more time on his rocket company, Blue Origin.

"As a friend of mine says, he should spend more time at Blue Origin and less time in the hot tub," Musk told the outlet.

Bezos, it seems, paid no mind to Musk's zinger and has gone on to enjoy some hot yacht summers.

To be sure, Musk is no stranger to yachts.

That getaway was a rare moment for Musk, who's famously said that he hates taking vacations.

Musk once came close to dying in 2000 when he contracted malaria while vacationing in South Africa.

Musk said the trip, which he took after Peter Thiel ousted him as PayPal CEO, was his first real vacation from work. Musk was booted from PayPal while on his honeymoon with his first wife, Justine Musk, a few months earlier. "In the last 12 years, I only tried to take a week off twice," he said in 2015 . "The first time I took a week off, the Orbital Sciences rocket exploded, and Richard Branson's rocket exploded in that same week."

"The second time I took a week off, my rocket exploded ," Musk said.

"The lesson here is, don't take a week off," he added.
