What Happened to Tattoo Yachts

For many years, Tattoo Yachts was a well-known and respected name in the yacht industry. The company was known for producing high-quality, custom-built yachts that were in high demand among sailing enthusiasts. However, in recent years, Tattoo Yachts seems to have disappeared from the market, leaving many people wondering what happened to the once-thriving company. In this article, we will explore the rise and fall of Tattoo Yachts and try to understand what led to the company’s apparent downfall.

The Rise of Tattoo Yachts

Tattoo Yachts was founded in the early 2000s by a team of experienced sailing enthusiasts and boat builders. The company quickly gained a reputation for producing top-of-the-line yachts that were not only beautiful but also highly functional and seaworthy. Tattoo Yachts offered a range of customizations and personalizations, allowing customers to create the yacht of their dreams.

One of the reasons for Tattoo Yachts’ early success was its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. The company’s yachts were built to the highest standards, using the best materials and the latest technology. This attention to detail made Tattoo Yachts stand out in a crowded market and attracted a loyal customer base.

The Decline of Tattoo Yachts

Despite its initial success, Tattoo Yachts began to face challenges in the mid-2010s. There were several factors that contributed to the company’s decline, including changes in consumer preferences, increased competition, and internal struggles.

Changes In Consumer Preferences

One of the main factors that led to Tattoo Yachts’ decline was a shift in consumer preferences. As the market evolved, there was a growing demand for smaller, more affordable yachts that were easy to operate and maintain. Tattoo Yachts, with its focus on custom-built luxury yachts, struggled to adapt to this change in demand and lost a significant portion of its customer base.

Increased Competition

Another challenge that Tattoo Yachts faced was increased competition from both traditional yacht builders and new entrants into the market. As the yacht industry grew more crowded, Tattoo Yachts found it difficult to compete with other companies that were offering similar products at lower prices. This increased competition put pressure on Tattoo Yachts’ profit margins and made it harder for the company to sustain its operations.

Internal Struggles

In addition to external challenges, Tattoo Yachts also faced internal struggles that contributed to its decline. There were reports of management issues, production delays, and financial difficulties within the company, which ultimately eroded its reputation and led to a loss of trust among customers and suppliers.

The Future of Tattoo Yachts

While the decline of Tattoo Yachts has been unfortunate, there is still hope for the company’s future. In recent years, there have been reports of potential partnerships and restructuring efforts aimed at reviving the brand and restoring its former glory. Additionally, there is still a dedicated community of Tattoo Yachts owners and enthusiasts who remain loyal to the brand and hope to see it make a comeback.

It remains to be seen whether Tattoo Yachts will be able to overcome the challenges it has faced and reclaim its position as a leading yacht manufacturer. However, the company’s legacy and reputation for quality and craftsmanship may provide a foundation for its revival.

New boat: Tattoo 26

T he Tattoo 26, is a trailerable, 26-foot motorsailer built by Paul Sharp and Laura MacGregor Sharp. Laura is the daughter of Roger MacGregor, designer and builder of the MacGregor 26.

tattoo yacht

There are, however, important differences between the Tattoo 26 and the MacGregor. The Sharps remodeled the boat for the next generation of sailors, who will like the square-topped main, the halyards running aft to the cockpit and other changes, including cosmetic ones. The 6-foot headroom interior is warmer with bamboo trim and a multi-purpose table with built-in storage that also converts into a berth. Topsides, the mast rotates on a hinged step. A roller furler, genoa and an asymmetrical spinnaker are options.

Optimizing space with the table and the slide-away galley makes room for an enclosed head, a comfort not always seen on boats this size. The 26 sleeps six in two settee berths, a forward double and a queen-sized aft berth.

Some of the extra space comes from the fact that the engine is mounted outboard, and it's an engine that could power a boat three times the displacement of the 26. Ranging from 5 to 60 horsepower, the larger engines push the boat into powerboat performance, in the 20-knot range. Slow down to 6 knots and you can motor for 200 miles without refueling.

The 6-foot-long cockpit has winches mounted forward on either side of the companionway. The centerboard control line is lead to the cockpit, and the centerboard itself folds entirely into the hull. That's a protective feature: once the board is up, it's safe from hard landings on sand or the trailer.

As a centerboarder, the 26 needs ballast, and instead of lead in the bilge, which would affect trailering performance, the boat uses about 1,700 pounds of water ballast for stability. That's enough ballast to make it self righting. According to the Sharps, it takes about 5 minutes to fill or drain the tanks, and they can be drained while the boat is rolling down the road. As well as the solid stability, an additional safety feature is the hull's foam core, providing enough flotation to keep the boat and crew awash until help arrives.

It's more likely the crew will be awash in fun rather than water. The boat's less than 8-foot beam and 2,500-pound dry weight makes it narrow and light enough to trailer to nearly any lake with paved road access, and the 12-inch draft means that it launches off most boat ramps-and then anchors nearly on the beach.

Great condition! We purchased a larger sailboat, time to move the Mac on to its next owner! See pictures below description. ALL pictures of the actual hull for sale As you may know Macgregor is no longer building sailboats. The new company Tattoo Yachts, is also no longer producing a 26 foot sailboat. The supplies of these boats are limited to the boats that are already made. This is a perfect opportunity to purchase one of the best condition 26M sailboats out there. The trailer is the superior (despite popular belief) steel trailer. (later models have an aluminum frame, but still have a STEEL tongue, axle, bunk supports which all rust/fail as well). The trailer with this boat was professionally rebuilt with a 1/4" thick steel tongue, rustproofed on the inside (where ALL the Macgregor trailers fail first) and painted with rustproofing paint. There is a new surge brake actuator, as well as new brake calipers and brake pads. The brake line is made of stainless steel. The lighting system is newly wired with LED lights. New winch, winch strap, new security chain, new tongue winch. Bunk boards rebuilt as well. The factory trailer is superior to many aftermarket ones, as it allows the lowest trailering height (allowing launching in shallow ramps) AND a front ladder to dramatically ease launchingLots of well thought out upgrades!SailsNEW (used 1 season) MainsailGeneoa with UV strip sewn in (cleaned, serviced, folded)Roller furler with line led aft with cleat for Geneoaboots installed on spreader endsSail handlingTopling lift installedMain halyard led aftStock rotating mast with locking pin (for trailering or running down wind)ElectronicsGarmin 440s GPS Plotter and depth sounder (shoot through hull) included/installedStandard Horizon VHF radio with DSC - hooked up to GPSWired remote VHF Mic in cockpitmast top mounted VHF antennaElectrical8 circuit Blue Sea breaker panellight control subpanel2 Marine Deep Cycle batteries (starting and house) - Group 24Battery switches with Automatic Charging relay (automatically charges bothbatteries, but keeps them separated when not being charged!)110 Inverter with plug12v plugs in cockpit and cabinLightingStandard macgregor lightsAnchor light on mast topforedeck lightcockpit light under consoleHead5 gallon portable headGalleyOrigo Alcohol stoveelectric fresh water water pump with 50 gallon flexible tank and transom fill.Large cooler with tiedown2 piece table, doubles as a cockpit tableInteriorStock Macgregor cushionsNew custom carpetstorage bins and pocketsSeveral grab handles mounted throughout the interiorSolar vent fan in foredeck hatchStainless Steel hatch holder2 fire extinguishersCockpitCustom Stern rail seats installedCustom rudder control line with blocks to reduce lifting effort !Upgraded steering cablesLarge Ritchie compassCustom made, 2 piece hatchboards with screens and shades (in addition to factory solid hatchboard)Custom transom mesh guard (keep stuff from falling out the back!)Transom swim laddergrab rail mounted on hatchEngineRECENTLY SERVICED - carbs rebuilt/sync'ed; impeller replaced.Turnkey ready to go!50 HP Honda outboard with engine steering linkageupgraded throttle cables12 Gallon fuel tankCanvasCustom padded lifeline coversCustom Sailcover3 Custom made sheetbagscustom chart pockets in cockpit6' Bimini covers the entire cockpitMast handling:Mast raising system with brake winch with removable baby staysPVC roller furler support for traileringquick release removable spreadersOthermast top mounted windexFlag pole with flag for sternburgee flag block on spreader with stay mounted cleat2:1 blocks installed for daggerboard raising'Jam' cleat installed for easier daggerboard handlingCustom/improved rudder raising system with pop-up cleats and jamb cleatsAnchorDelta plow200' anchor rode6' chainTrailerNew tounge winchnew surge brake2" trailer ball requiredNew stainless steel brake lineNew tires and wheelsLED lights Please note, these pictures were taken over the years. Now you may be reading this because you have a tattoo somewhere on your body and youre not entirely sure if it’s going to affect you getting a job on a yacht.

If you have tried to google the ‘Can I work on a yacht with a tattoo’ or read about it on Facebook groups you will find a mixed bag of answers so hopefully I can provide some insight

Firstly, do you have a tattoo? Is it visible? What type of boat are you hoping to work on, sail yacht or motor yacht? Is the tattoo offensive? Are you aiming to be a yacht stewardess? A deckhand? An Engineer?

There are a lot of factors to consider when you have a tattoo  and you’re trying to get a job onboard. The main one is if it is visible with a uniform on . So for females in the interior thats skort and polo dress for the males on deck thats shorts to the knee and a polo and for engineers you’re quite lucky as tattoos are generally more acceptable as you are more ‘behind the scenes’ not on show to the guests onboard.

If you have a visible tattoo don’t worry it is not the end of your not even started yachting career. Getting your first job in yachting with a tattoo may mean It could take slightly longer to get your first job or you may not be offered a certain role due to management policies or owner preferences however this doesn’t mean there aren’t other boats who don’t mind tattoos. Don’t just give up!

If you are dockwalking or going for an interview it is best to cover them up by wearing a long sleeve polo or trousers. Remember yachting is always about first impressions and we don;t want a bad one or the judgement which can come from tattoos.

So you may be wondering should I write on my resume that I have tattoos?

I would say yes and then put visible or not visible. You don’t want to waste anyones time, if it’s an owners preference the chief officer looking to hire has no say in this, he is simply following the rules.  The boat may ask for photos to clarify how visible the tattoo may be and to see it before they offer you a job. This is normal.

Which boats will be more likely to employ crew with tattoos?

It depends on a lot of factors like owner preference, management policiy, but generally speaking smaller yachts under 55m tend to be more relaxed about tattoos. And then there are sailing yachts which tend to be more casual so generally speaking tattoos aren’t as big of an issue as opposed to on larger motor yachts.

I have also found charter yachts are strict with employing crew without tattoos as they have a variety of guests onboard.

From my experience working on boats over 60m, the interior and exterior team have not had any visible tattoos. I actually got my small foot tattoo removed as I was conscious of it when I ‘had’ to go swimming with guests, it was not visible until I removed my shoe. I didn’t want it to an issue for future job roles so I just got it removed. Ouch and those machines hurt! However you don’t have to do this, I have a friend on a sailing boat who has dainty tattoos all up her arm, it’s not a problem. And another friend who has smaller arm tattoos and she worked on 55m motor yacht and also on some really fabulous boats! It’s not impossible … however it will definitely be harder  to find work with visible tattoos.  There are more sail yachts willing to take on crew with tattoos than motor yachts. Just make sure that your skills and your work ethic exceeds any issues anyone can have with your tattoos.

You may have to put in a bit of extra time and effort in securing a position but ultimately there will be a boat which will see beyond your body art and employ you based on the fact you are good at your job and a good candidate

100 Boat Tattoo Designs

Well, first of all boat tattoo designs can be funny and beautiful. If you look at our collection, in fact, you will find a combination of complicated drawings and colourful shapes. These are real masterpieces conceived and created by real artists. And talking about artists, if you decide to get your own boat tattoo, choose a good tattoo artist, someone you really trust. You will also need to be patient and remember: you will have a piece of art living on your skin!

Plus, boat tattoo designs can be the mirror of some our most hidden wishes. Have you ever stopped in the middle of the road, lost in a picture of a far-away land? Maybe it was an exotic paradise, an island in the middle of the ocean? Those who dream about crossing the ocean on a boat hide within themselves the spirit of the greatest adventurers. And what is an adventure if not the will to learn and discover something new?

The fact is that boats are truly a unique symbol of human curiosity. They are the material expression of the desire human feel to move beyond the known and into the unknown. For centuries boats have been the only bridge between us and the ocean, a terrifying, magical place where humans don’t belong. They are the key to enter a universe made of water and mystery.

Somehow, then, boat tattoo designs can be an original, artistic way to pay homage to human courage and curiosity, a way to connect with our subconscious will to explore, our desire to find new horizons beyond what we already know. Look at our pictures, find something you like, imagine yourself standing on your boat in the middle of the ocean: how does it feel? What do you smell? What do you see? Is there someone with you or you are alone with your courage?

It’s quite a journey, don’t you think?

Did the author of the text preceding the pictures do ANY research into tattoos? Ship- and sea-themed tattoos are popular because of the history and traditions of tattooing.

William Dampher is responsible for re-introducing tattooing to the west after it was banned in Europe and lost popularity. A sailor and explorer of the South Seas, in 1691 he brought to London a heavily tattooed Polynesian named Prince Giolo (the “Painted Prince”).

In the late 1700s, Captain Cook made several trips to the South Pacific. The people of London welcomed his stories and were anxious to see the art and artifacts he brought back. Returning form one of this trips, he brought a heavily tattooed Polynesian named Omai. He was a sensation in London. Soon, the upper- class were getting small tattoos in discreet places. For a short time tattooing became a fad.

Chatham Square in New York City was a seaport and entertainment center at the turn of the century. Samuel O’Reilly came from Boston and set up shop there, taking on an apprentice named Charlie Wagner. After O’Reily’s death in 1908, Wagner opened a supply business with Lew Alberts. Alberts had trained as a wallpaper designer and he transferred those skills to the design of tattoos.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

tattoo yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

tattoo yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

tattoo yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

tattoo yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

tattoo yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

tattoo yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

tattoo yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.
