The Best Private Yacht Charters for Small Groups

Halcon del Mar by Red Savannah Private Cruise

While much of the cruise industry halted operations in the last year , it didn't mean that all sailings stopped. For families or pandemic-era bubble groups who wanted a sunny getaway on the water, a trend emerged: renting out entire yachts , complete with crew, for a new kind of custom sailing.

Exploring destinations around the world on a private yacht with your kids, and maybe another family or two, is both a luxurious and practical way to travel these days. The sea turns into your personal playground, and your captain will steer you to islets and beaches away from the crowds. On board, you can spend time together in a pleasant, contained environment—plus, no one has to cook. Bring on the movies and board games!

Here are our favorite family-friendly yachts available for private charter around the world.

All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Howler monkeys, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies are one attraction, pristine beaches another as this new 128-foot motor yacht, operated by the sustainably conscious expedition line Kontiki, explores less-touristed areas on the coast of Ecuador beginning this summer. The nine-cabin yacht carries up to 18 guests in contemporary high-style. The 10-member crew includes local guides, a chef, and wellness professionals—there's even a masseuse on board. On land, visit nature preserves and treat the kids to a private tasting of Ecuadorian chocolate.

Enjoy the Jacuzzi and water toys—jet skis, water skis, snorkeling equipment, wakeboards, a canoe, paddleboards, a banana boat. Everyone can dine together at an open-air table at the stern, then watch movies in the saloon. Not-to-miss spots on the Gulf of Göcek include the protected Iztuzu Beach, where turtles nest.

Made of teak, the 180-foot, Spanish-owned luxury yacht has nine cabins across four decks—plenty of room for fussy teens to have their own space. Luxuriate on daybeds, hang out on beaches, and snorkel or dive in the region’s famous coral reefs . The 20-person crew includes a cruise director, dive instructor, chefs, and masseuses. Water skis, wakeboards, and towable floats will thrill the kids.

HMS Gåssten

Family groups of up to 10 will frolic under the Midnight Sun in Norway’s sparsely populated western fjords on this funky wooden boat, which started life as a Swedish Navy minesweeper. A meticulous rehab includes an oak-paneled saloon for dining, lounging, and board games. Perfect for kids, two of the five cabins have bunk beds. You can swim off the bow deck (where a gun turret once was located), as well as hike, bike, paddleboard, kayak, and fish during your stay.

Get up close to the shoreline on the yacht’s kayaks and paddleboards. Three suites (one with bunk beds) accommodate six. In the spacious main salon, the private chef will prepare for dinner shrimp you caught that day.

I SEA by Charter World Private Cruise

I Sea 's amenities include a floating swimming pool and a sky lounge.

Cruising the Greek Isles on this 134-foot superyacht brings luxury touches adults will appreciate, such as a master suite with private balcony on the Bridge deck. The waterslide will get the kids’ attention; it runs from the top deck to the sea. Great amenities include a floating swimming pool, banana boat, and snorkeling and diving equipment for two. Onboard are a Jacuzzi and a main salon for watching movies on TVs, plus a sky lounge. A crew of six caters to up to 10 guests in five cabins.

Metsuyan IV

A 3D outdoor cinema and 13-foot diving board for jumping into the sea are among the cool features on this sleek, 10-guest, five-cabin superyacht, available for cruising Croatia and Montenegro—including stops at gorgeous white-sand beaches. Onboard are a spa pool and a crow’s nest where kids may play pirate when not competing on the PlayStation 3, or using a provided easel and art supplies. Parents of younger kids will like the two forward staterooms with a connecting door.

Book now : $118,00 to $138,000 per week

Moorings 5000

This contemporary catamaran can be crew-chartered, with captain and chef, for up to eight guests in St. Thomas, for cruising the U.S. Virgin Islands. Visit popular Trunk Bay, then snorkel with sea turtles in Christmas Cove and look for dolphins in Leinster Bay. Toys include water skis, kneeboards, and a draggable inflatable tube. Hang out on beanbags or on the “trampoline” between the catamaran’s two hulls. Indoors, a TV/DVD player is set for movie nights in the expansive saloon.

Book now : From $21,479 per week

This is part of a series on rethinking private travel , which explores how the pandemic has changed our approach to private travel and made it more accessible to all.

Best Yachts for Charter for More than 12 Guests

63 Yachts for Charter

If you want to enjoy a vacation with a large group of friends or want an incredible party at sea, then you will need a large yacht for more than 12 guests.

Most yacht charters are limited to carrying a maximum of 12 guests while cruising, even 10 cabin yachts that could comfortably sleep 20 guests in private use. However, there are a select number of yachts for charter that can legally cruise with more than 12 guests.

Sorry, there were no results found for your search.

Why choose a superyacht for more than 12 guests?

A yacht charter for more than 12 guests is ideal for corporate events, large parties at sea, multi-generational gatherings, or for a big group of friends. If you want to experience the ultimate vacation of a lifetime, then a superyacht charter will exceed your expectations.

Northrop & Johnson has access to every luxury boat for rent for more than 12 guests. We excel at delivering extraordinary experiences at sea, so contact our team today.

Rent a boat that sleeps more than 12 guests

Rent a boat that sleeps more than 12 guests and enjoy all the benefits of a luxury yacht charter , including exclusive experiences, the utmost privacy, fantastic amenities, and a dedicated crew.

These spectacular vessels are ideal for large events. Throw an extravagant party or simply make memories that will last a lifetime with your best friends and extended family members.

Why are most yacht charters limited to 12 guests?

Due to international maritime regulations, most yachts are limited to just 12 guests when on a charter – even if the vessel can easily sleep more guests. However, it is possible for a luxury yacht for charter to accommodate more than 12 guests. To do this, a charter boat must meet additional Passenger Yacht Code – PYC – regulations enabling it to carry more than 12 guests at sea.

What are the best yachts for more than 12 guests?

Famous yachts for more than 12 guests include:

  • 236’ft (72m) SERENITY – Guests: 28
  • 180’ft (55m) HARMONY V – Guests: 49
  • 159’ft (48m) OHANA – Guests: 30

Chartering with Groups of Friends

Group Charters - How to Charter a Yacht With a Group of Friends

We see it daily - groups of friends who charter together and not only have the vacation of their lives but build much deeper friendships because there's just something magical about being on a yacht. There's no better vacation choice than

Our Expert Advice

friend Sailing Vacations, yacht charter with friends, yacht charter group

When planning your charter holiday with a group of friends, it's important to set expectations and assure that everyone understands what the vacation will be all about. Some key considerations we recommend that you discuss together are the following:

Luxury cruise vs bareboat adventure. Do you all want the same type of holiday? Some people want to sail every day and enjoy raising sails, navigating, dropping anchor and all the other tasks that come with a bareboat sailboat charter, while others want to tan all day on the top deck with a fresh drink in their hands. Getting a compatible group that understands the type of charter you are planning, is critical to everyone's enjoyment.

Location location location. What destination will make everyone the happiest? Do you want to escape the winter and holiday in the Caribbean? Do you want the perfect Mediterranean vacation that includes classical ruins, medieval towns, local cuisine and maybe a chic night club along the way? Solitude and sunsets vs bustling harbors and nightlife? Someplace exotic like Southeast Asia? We'd recommend that you first read through some of our charter destination guides together and settle on the one the best meets everyone's needs.

Get firm commitment early. It can be frustrating and time-consuming to plan a group charter and then have extra people want to join or some dropout. When you decide to charter with friends, we recommend you get their firm commitment from the beginning and ask that if they're in, they're in! Otherwise, you may find the perfect yacht for 3 couples, be ready to book it, and then if one couple drops out you have to start finding yachts all over again (and you probably had your heart set on the bigger one!).

Know your budget. How much are each person/couple in the party willing to spend? No sense in getting your heart set on a Crewed Catamaran for $20,000 if the combined budget is only $10,000! And make sure this covers all expenses - travel, provisioning, tips, etc. It's a sensitive issue, so often groups don't fully discuss it, leading to tense moments when the bills come due.

Throw an orientation party before the charter. To get everyone excited and prepared, we recommend that you have the group over for an evening to go through all the details - flights, logistics, costs, what to bring, itinerary, boat layout, cabin assignments, etc. Perhaps make it a theme party for the charter location (serve Painkillers for the BVI or Greek food and wine for Greece, for instance.)

Types of Charters for Groups of Friends

You have plenty of choice as to the kind of yacht you will be chartering for your group. Below are the major categories of yachts - it's best to hone in on one so that your group agrees the type of yacht they want to be on (and budget they're willing to spring for).

friend Sailing Vacations, yacht charter with friends, yacht charter group

Luxury Motor Yachts

Instead of making reservations at a 5-star resort, why not do the holiday of a lifetime and pamper yourselves and friends on a luxury motor yacht? The advantage is that you essentially have a new resort location every day - with no one else except your best friends there!

We have nothing against luxury resorts, but the freedom, pampering and personalized service on a luxury yacht are unmatched.

See Our Luxury Yacht Charter Guide

Crewed Catamarans

Catamarans are hugely popular for groups of friends who charter together for the first time because they offer the fun of sailing with excellent group space, privacy and comfort. They don't "tip" so the ride is more comfortable for everyone, especially anyone who might be worried about becoming seasick.

With a catamaran, you have great views from the salon, and you're always close to the water for that quick swim. And the cabins are generally all the same size, so no one has to fight over who got the best cabin!

See our Crewed Catamaran Charter Guide

Bareboat Sailing Yachts

If everyone in your party loves sailing and are happily taking responsibility, bareboat sailing gives lasting memories and a great sense of accomplishment. With groups, they have to be comfortable that one person essentially is in charge - which normally is fine but it's always best to ask before the charter.

If you want the freedom of a bareboat charter with a bit less work and organizational stress, consider a bareboat with a skipper. Skippers rarely get in the way, relax your group, educate you about the area, and just make everything work better.

See Our Bareboat Charter Guide

Day Charters

If your holiday is already planned to be in a hotel or rental house, we highly recommend spoiling the group with a day charter. It's usually the highlight of the vacation and gives everyone a new perspective on the area without having to deal with crowds, driving, and logistics.

We have a large selection of dayboats in most major ports worldwide - you just need to search for the one you want. And if your budget for the day is less than €1000/$1000, try our direct booking sister site MyDayBoat.com .

Cruise With Friends: 7 Tips For Smooth Sailing

So, you’ve decided to go on the adventure of a lifetime on a yacht cruise with friends . But, how do you pick the right cruising companions?

Don’t get us wrong. Yacht living is incredible. It can be one of the best experiences of your life – if you set out with a suitable group of people, that is. Here are 7 tips for going on a cruise with friends.

THE ART OF YACHT LIVING

A liveaboard catamaran or yacht offers you the chance to explore new places, meet new people and experience some life-changing ocean-exploring adventures. You will most likely undertake this journey with a hand-picked group of people who will share (almost) every moment of the voyage with you.

Yacht bedroom

For many people, living aboard a yacht equals living the dream. But the dream can quickly turn into a nightmare if you find yourself in a confined space on the open seas in, shall we say, less-than-harmonious circumstances.

Putting together a good yacht crew isn’t too hard. There are many highly experienced and skilled sailing professionals offering their services to ensure your sailing trip runs as smoothly as possible. But the one thing your dedicated yacht crew cannot guarantee is a pleasant and conflict-free voyage for you and your guests.

CRUISING WITH FRIENDS – PEOPLE YOU CAN LIVE WITH

If you are setting sail with a spouse or significant other, the chances are you know each other well enough to do so. You may also know your prospective sailing buddies well – but you will still learn lots of new things about each other once you set off on a cruise with friends.

Making sure your sailing companions are the kind of people you can spend big chunks of time with, day in and day out, possibly for weeks on end, is essential.

Putting together the perfect group of sailing friends can be a challenge. Where does one begin to make sure that only the most compatible and agreeable group of people join you on your liveaboard ocean adventure?

RESEARCH IS KEY BEFORE CRUISING WITH FRIENDS

Doing some research on what makes a good sailor is an excellent start. Living on a yacht is lots of fun, but it has its unique requirements and challenges. Can your friends handle living in small spaces? Bad weather at sea? Deal with technical issues and unexpected malfunctions? It takes a certain kind of person to pull yacht living off well.

Yacht rope

Going on a few shorter sailing trips to get a good feel for communal yacht living will also be an excellent idea. Doing so may just preserve your friendship – whether you end up sailing off together or not!

Presumably, you know your sailing friends well, so you should be able to tell whether or not they possess these essential “good sailing buddy” traits.

GOOD SAILING BUDDY – 7 TOP TIPS

Here are the 7 most important questions to ask when looking for a sailing buddy:

  • Do they have any sailing training, sailing credentials or previous sailing experience?
  • Do they have a calm disposition and can they handle themselves in stressful situations?
  • Is your prospective sailing buddy intuitive and good at finding solutions to problems?
  • Are they a team player and open to compromise?
  • Are they handy and good at fixing things?
  • Are they flexible and open-minded, with a good sense of humour?
  • Is your prospective sailing buddy willing to do their share of chores and abide by your yacht ’s sailing rules?

Liveaboard catamaran companions who know the basics of sailing can make an immense contribution to the running and sailing of your vessel. It will help to spread the workload and ensure that no one is left feeling like they are “doing all the work”, which can cause resentment to build.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHILE CRUISING WITH FRIENDS

Besides all the freedom, exhilaration and joy it can offer, yacht living can also be challenging at times. You learn to expect technical failures and various other problems. Tempers will fray, and patience might wear thin now and then.

Yachts on the ocean

There are many unpredictable aspects to a yacht sailing journey, including weather patterns, equipment malfunctions and a whole host of unforeseen events that may or may not occur.

Having practical, handy sailing buddies that are pro-active, can “think on the fly” and are willing to lend a hand coming up with solutions will be invaluable to you on your journey.

Very important – before you set out, discuss your yacht’s sailing rules with everyone who will be going on the journey, and ensure that everyone agrees to your basic rules of yacht living.

DECISIONS, DECISIONS

A yacht cruise with friends will present you with numerous daily options. Where to drop anchor, what activities to plan, deciding to stay a bit longer or to lift anchor and set sail – the list is endless.

Sunset on a yacht

Living on a yacht, having sailing buddies that are easygoing and willing to compromise will go a long way to help prevent petty arguments, such as what to have for supper every evening.

Money matters can also quickly spark ugly disagreements. Be sure to discuss all money-related issues before departing on your cruise and set any such rules out clearly – preferably in writing.

CRUISING WITH FRIENDS: CAN THEY LAUGH IT OFF?

A sense of tolerance, willingness to compromise and a good sense of humour will help to diffuse difficult situations on your voyage. Laziness on a liveaboard catamaran or yacht can be a real source of conflict, so sailing buddies who will happily do their share of the work and contribute where required will ensure a good vibe throughout your journey.

GOOD SAILING BUDDIES = GREAT CRUISE WITH FRIENDS

If you know your prospective sailing friends well and you can tick all of the above boxes, the chances are that you will be setting off on a fun-filled cruise of a lifetime. In addition to the seven tips supplied, as a rule of thumb, a good sailing buddy should tick all the same boxes as what makes a good travel buddy.

In short, it is essential that the sailing friends who will be living on a yacht with you possess not only the right skills and sailing credentials but the necessary character traits to ensure a pleasurable, unforgettable sailing experience for all.

Windward Islands Yachting Company

Who should you (really) charter a yacht with? Our advices

yachts with friends

Are you worried about how to make a group for your next yacht trip? You should be.

When you ask experienced yachties who you should charter a yacht with, the usual joke that precedes their answer is: “no one”. Of course, it’s a joke, so it’s not entirely true. But since it’s a joke, there is some truth and painful yacht experiences behind it…

Yacht holidays are like any other holidays: some will want to do a certain activity while others wish to chill out on the couch, some will want to party every day while others will be early birds to enjoy the best sunrises. Everyone has a different definition of the perfect vacation.

But the little issues, fights and frustrations that occur during holidays on land can take a more dramatic turn when you are in a limited space in the middle of the ocean. You can’t exactly go for a walk in the park to cool off, or decide to go on your way for the day.

So how do you ensure that you have the right group for your yacht trip? Follow our guide.

Who can you charter a yacht with?

You can charter a yacht with everyone: as a couple, with your university group of friends, between colleagues for a seminar, with other couples, or with your whole family.

The experience is different depending on who you go with. Each got their pros and cons.

Yacht trips as a couple

Should you go on a yacht trip with your significant other? In most cases, yes you should.

Yacht trips as a couple have many pros compared to holidays with larger groups:

  • If you live together, you are already used to each other
  • You likely have aligned interests and similar lifestyle
  • You probably already know how to compromise
  • Only two persons need to agree on destinations and activities

yachts with friends

A sailing holiday with your partner is a romantic , cosy escape that is quite easy to pull off smoothly. There is no reason not to try.

Yacht vacations in family

Renting a yacht with your family is a great way to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones. But it comes with more challenges than simply going out as a couple:

  • The age gap between children and adults can impact choices of activities
  • Conflictual relationships between large group of relatives might erupt easier on a boat
  • You can’t escape your mother in law

On the bright side, you most likely know your family members well, so you should know what to expect in terms of how each of them is likely to behave on board.

yachts with friends

And let’s be honest, there is nothing better than being together on a boat when all stars are aligned:

  • The limited space is a great way to have everybody together
  • Activities, itineraries and the overall journey are ideal to bond with each other
  • It creates long lasting memories and perfect family photos

Life as a family is always more complicated than the one as a couple. And it’s not different when you gather as a group for a yacht trip.

But it’s an effort that pays off, and that we highly recommend it.

Yacht trips with a group of friends

Renting a yacht together with your friends is the perfect picture to seal friendship. But it needs a little more caution than when you charter a boat with your family or your significant other:

  • You are not in your friend’s intimacy and don’t know them that well
  • You may not be familiar with their plus one or their children
  • It’s likely that you did not see each other for a while and have changed in between
  • The more people, the harder it is to commit, agree and organize

On the other hand, who can be a better choice to unwind in tropical locations than your friends, especially if you are all yacht enthusiasts?

yachts with friends

Most groups of friends have the time of their lives on their yacht charter. Follow our advice below to make the ideal team and there will be no reason for your yacht trip with friends to go wrong.

What you should look for in your yacht trip group

Matching interests.

Make sure your interests and expectations are the same.

It starts with the destination. But the type of boat to charter, activities and lifestyle onboard are equally important.

It will help tremendously the organisation if you all agree on where you want to go, when you want to go and what you want to do.

If half of the group wants to party late and sleep in while the other half wants to wake up early to dive, it might be a problem.

Similarly, if some members of your yacht trip group don’t want to go to the same destination as others, or some want a sailboat and others a motoryacht, it may be near impossible to find a common ground.

A good compromise for larger groups is to charter different yachts to the same destination. Then your only mission is to agree on a common destination and matching dates. Your large group can be divided into smaller groups that can do different activities or use different boats during the day and all gather at night. The best of both worlds.

Compatible personalities

The space is limited on a yacht, so it’s important to have people on board with matching personalities. And it’s of course even better if they share a true enthusiasm for yachting and being with each other.

Ideally, you probably want to leave negative, conflictual and on-edge people on land.

A yacht trip should be a relaxing experience among people who enjoy being there and love being together.

Similar budget

Budget is also a factor to consider when chartering a yacht, especially for yacht trips with groups of friends.

It’s easier if you all can agree more or less on a budget everyone can afford.

If you are on a crewed yacht charter, you can all share the APA. If you are chartering a smaller yacht or a bareboat one, you can set up a money pot or “kitty” before departure to use for expenses onboard.

Making a group to go on a yacht trip together, whether it’s family, friends or colleagues, can seem complicated, but it’s always worth it.

Do you already have a group but you are unsure about the best destination or the ideal boat for your trip? Get in touch with our travel advisors.

Why sailing with friends is more fun, gives you more sleep, lower insurance and a chance to share costs

Yachting World

  • August 7, 2015

Andy and Nicky Gibb have had their friends join them all over the world to help crew on long passages and enjoy the stopovers. They explain how they make it work

If you could reduce marina and car rental costs by 50 per cent, give yourself three or four hours more sleep per night on long passages, improve safety and pay less for insurance, would you be interested? And suppose you could get the tours and guides you want, maintain and enhance friendships from back home, have mail delivered and it all cost you nothing?

Most people would, of course, be interested in such a ‘scheme’. The arrangement is simple and it’s called sailing with friends.

You would think that sailing with friends would be such an advantage that everyone would be doing it, yet here in the Pacific barely 15 per cent of the yachts we’ve come across have friends on board. The majority (60 per cent) are husband and wife pairs, with 15 per cent sailing alone and another ten per cent professionally crewed yachts.

Drained, exhausted and battered

One experienced couple sailed 4,000 miles from Mexico to Hawaii. They arrived drained, exhausted, battered by only three hours of sleep per night. When we sailed in the ARC in 2001, Nicky broke her arm halfway across, and having three friends with us made this an inconvenience rather than a disaster.

In the Atlantic, there may be a higher proportion of boats sailing with friends, but still many yachts sail long passages with just one or two people on board. Why?

Well, there are disadvantages to sailing with friends. Many owners dislike sharing the privacy of their own yacht, and there can be strains. One yacht arrived in Marquesas with the skipper and crew each accusing the other of trying to kill them!

Help with crew work is an obvious bonus, but there's also the camaraderie and the sharing of experiences

Help with crew work is an obvious bonus, but there’s also the camaraderie and the sharing of experiences

Another potential disadvantage is entrusting your precious yacht to someone else. Boats can buddy up to provide reassurance by sailing together or by radio net. But this still doesn’t overcome the lack of sleep, and anyway insurance often requires three people for long passages.

We have sailed 30,000 miles on our 41ft Intrepid of Dover , 26,000 of these with friends on board. We reckon there are two reasons why more yachts don’t sail with friends on board, and both can be managed:

Difficulty finding crew

This is actually a marketing challenge. We invited our sailing friends to Nicky’s birthday lunch, hinted at a yachting agenda and prepared an information pack for each guest, illustrating the route, the boat, the costs and the times. During the lunch, we gave an informal briefing, asking for expressions of interest within one month, and firm commitments by the end of March (we would leave the UK in July).

The first commitment came within 12 hours, and within one week we had our entire crew for the four feeder legs and the Atlantic crossing. Interestingly, there was sufficient diversity in first and second choices to cover all legs. All the commitments made were honoured, and we were joined in strange ports by hugely excited friends/crew bringing our mail.

Our fallback was to use websites. For example, we used the ARC website for our third Atlantic crossing and www.crewseekers.co.uk for the US/Panama to Marquesas leg. Our website was helpful in describing Intrepid . We arranged a face to face meeting with the best people, where we discussed whether this would meet their personal objectives and how they would fit in and establish commitment.

IMG_0382 copy

A third approach to crewing was the simple notice. When Nicky broke her arm, we needed a third crewmember while we cruised the Caribbean. The start and finish of long passages, major sailing events and sailing clubs are good places for notices. Ours detailed our plans, our boat and how to contact us. The itinerary fitted Per’s objectives perfectly. He interviewed us, we interviewed him, and Per stayed with us for six months as a firm friend.

The fourth approach started as an email to friends to give them our news. It expanded into a regular email with an address list of 100-plus through which we invite friends to sail on Intrepid . This is now the major way we find our crew volunteers.

Keeping them motivated

As a psychologist I developed some pragmatic solutions assuming that a small(ish) boat – especially with friends as crew – is not a professionally defined structure. But there are some areas that if not managed provide flashpoints.

We indicate the ports for crew changes and the likely dates six months in advance, but with some slack, and subject to change. By staying in touch, we are able to arrange changeovers to meet everyone’s needs.

We define the role of watchkeeper and skipper. This protects the crew from the skipper intruding into smaller decisions: for example, whether to tack, or to reef down.

We define our goal for each trip. There are often different opinions. Our goal for the Atlantic crossings was ‘to arrive in good order at a safe speed and enjoy ourselves’.

We like to be clear about money in advance. Friends pay for their own airfare and contribute to food, drink and email on board, based on estimated cost of about US$15-20 per day per person. We share marina costs, car rental, tours and meals out equally. Halving the cost enables us to have the convenience of marinas, for example, when other yachts are at anchor.

Be careful, if you are a British-registered boat, to ensure that the costs reflect running costs only, so that you don’t fall foul of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s guidelines for charter operations.

Structure to the day

We also provide a basic structure to the day. We all get together for lunch, sundowners (when we discuss tactics) and dinner, and put the boat to bed at 2100.

We let the personal sleep preferences of the crew indicate the best watch schedules. Some friends are morning people, others prefer late nights. We create shorter watches in the middle of the night, and cover all watches with friends’ first or second choices. We also give less experienced friends confidence by doubling them on watch together.

During the day we don’t define a watchkeeping rota provided one person is always responsible for the boat, and after an hour they can hand over to someone else.

We allocate a cook for each day and they plan the menu and clean up afterwards. This creates an incentive to be clean and cooking becomes a competitive win-win sport!

We indicate the standards of comfort, hygiene and cleanliness expected. We find that preparing expectations beforehand, then negotiating within these works best.

Crew provide their own entertainment. Often they exhibit hidden talents. Photo: Tor Johnson

Crew provide their own entertainment. Often they exhibit hidden talents. Photo: Tor Johnson

We advise friends to bring their own entertainment. On passage we have up to 16 hours of leisure a day and younger friends especially need to work out how they themselves will fill the time, whether it be reading, music, games, fishing or learning.

It’s vital to have your own space. Having more than four people on our boat does not allow sufficient privacy for most people. Private lockers for personal food, a curtain dividing the saloon from the galley and chart table and a second heads are all useful.

And finally we aim to share the magic: for example, catching a 350lb marlin between Bora Bora and Suvarov. Sharing the sunsets, fish, frustrations and excitements with friends who exhibit hidden talents as barman, cook or prankster, and who otherwise might not go cruising at all makes it all worthwhile.

Do’s and don’ts

√ Communicate the excitement of cruising.

√ Manage areas that have the potential for flashpoints and be flexible about others.

√ Provide an indicative itinerary six months in advance.

√ Meet all potential crew at least once before a long passage.

√ Require crew to have travel insurance.

X Exaggerate the comforts of cruising.

X Get locked into a rigid schedule.

X Impose a one-size-fits-all approach to crew.

When friendship goes wrong

I joined a friend’s yacht in the Canaries for a transatlantic crossing. I’d done quite a lot of sailing with the skipper before; he was a friend I had worked with. The three other crew were his friends, though I didn’t know them very well.

We had a lot of fun preparing the boat, some good evenings out. It was all very harmonious and there were no cross words. But that changed about two days out from land. The skipper hadn’t got much sleep because it had been windy, there were ships around at night and we were still settling into a routine. His demeanour changed, and he became quite anxious.

In the next days the atmosphere deteriorated. There were tantrums about minor things: the cooking, watch handovers, how much milk was put in his coffee. Most of it was about absurd things.

On top of that there were tensions between others on the crew. Two of the crew, guys who were younger than the rest of us, wanted to sail faster. The other woman and I were happy to cruise along; we weren’t trying to break records. The guys wanted to listen to loud music all the time and we didn’t. They were really untidy as well, which became another irritation.

It’s hard to describe quite how miserable the atmosphere was, and you couldn’t escape

Maybe there were too many crew in a 40ft boat, maybe we were just incompatible, but these small differences became really exaggerated until there were two tribes on board almost at war. The skipper didn’t see it as his role to intervene so he just let it wash over him. It was his first Atlantic crossing. I think he was really nervous. He prowled around at night and slept during the day, oblivious to the power tussle going on around him.

It’s hard to describe quite how miserable the atmosphere was, and you couldn’t escape. When we arrived in Barbados, we did the jobs that were needed and I couldn’t wait to get off. I didn’t sail with my friend, that skipper, again, and I’ve taken a lot more trouble to go sailing with crews beforehand to see how we all get along.

I’ve had some wonderful voyages with friends, but the best are with people who know how to live on board, how and when to rein in; it’s almost more important than technical sailing skills. It’s best when a skipper sets the rules, and is explicit about how things run and what your expectations should be. But from a crew point of view, be careful: my advice is to sail with people you can see are very well organised, but quite easygoing.

Large Group Yacht Charters: Creative Solutions To Chartering With ‘Too Many’ Friends

If you have already planned a yacht charter with extended family, a large group of friends, or for corporate charter events, you may have been challenged by the fact that most superyachts have a maximum overnight guest capacity of 12 due to licensing restrictions… In the superyacht world, there are always solutions to any obstacles you may encounter, and in this article, the Bluewater charter team offer some creative solutions for organising hugely successful big group yacht charters .

yachts with friends

Here are 3 ways to have the large group yacht charter of your dreams, plus a couple of trade tips you might not have thought about.

Option 1. Charter Yachts that Accommodate more than 12 guests

Within the global superyacht fleet, there is an exclusive sub-fleet of charter yachts with large passenger licenses that permit them to sleep more than 12 guests.

These large-group charter vessels range from luxuriously converted icebreakers and cruise ships to new-build superyachts. Some spectacular examples include explorer yachts SHERAKHAN (26 guests) and LEGEND (22 guests), converted cruise ship LAUREN L (36 guests) and superyachts ELEMENTS (22 guests) and MOONLIGHT II (36 guests). Increasingly, the accommodation layout on large charter vessels is designed to keep all parties happy, with multiple primary suites, convertible staterooms, and similarly sized staterooms.

These large-capacity superyachts don’t just have extra staterooms — far from it! These magnificent vessels offer extraordinary amenities, such as health spas and hairdressers, helicopter hangars and cinemas. They often feature beach clubs, swimming pools, dance floors, dive rooms, and palatial communal spaces.

Chartering a large passenger license yacht is a superb option if you’re looking to charter with a large group of friends or family, host a superyacht wedding, or host a corporate yacht charter event.

Top tip for large-group charters: Because yachts that accommodate more than 12 guests are relatively rare, it’s important to speak to your charter agent well in advance, particularly if you are planning to charter around a major event such as the Cannes Film Festival, New Year’s Eve, or the Monaco Grand Prix.

Option 2. Charter a Fleet of Yachts

If you have a charter group of more than 12 people, chartering a fleet of smaller yachts is a fabulous way to charter with large groups. The fleet can either travel together each day, or each yacht can go its own way each morning before meeting up in the afternoon, where they can ‘raft up’ (tie up together) for an evening of shared dining and fun.

For some groups, chartering a fleet of yachts rather than one big one may suit your purposes better, particularly if you have different families chartering together. Chartering multiple vessels doesn’t just give each group their own space, but it also gives each group a degree of control over their spending. Remember that you cover food, berthing and fuel on top of your charter fee, so if you’re on one large yacht and your friends only eat lobster washed down with Cristal, you will be paying your share of that.

Ultimately, chartering a fleet gives everyone a lot of freedom. It’s also a good way for a charter to be able to please all tastes when it comes to the itinerary — the group can split up across the yachts according to their plans for the day — one yacht to a diving location, another into port for lunch and shopping, another to an anchorage to pass the day. You can also choose the vessel that suits you and your smaller group, and each vessel has its own master and VIP accommodation.

Who doesn’t want to say, “I’m chartering a fleet of yachts on the French Riviera this summer”?

Top tip when chartering a fleet: It’s vitally important that there’s good collaboration between the captains and charter brokers of all vessels. We strongly recommend using the same charter broker for the whole fleet to coordinate with success.

Option 3: Charter a Chase Boat to Accompany You

A chase boat is a smaller yacht that provides some additional accommodation (normally 1-2 cabins max), and which generally travels with the yacht and ties up next to it at night. The overwhelming majority of charter activities happen on the ‘mothership’, but a chase boat is also generally used as a day boat for activities, whether going ashore, out fishing or diving or anchoring off an island. Just like having a fleet above, it allows the charter group to split across two vessels for different activities.

Some charter yachts have their own chase boats, but in most cases, you will charter the chase boat separately. In the latter case, choose a chase boat that offers different capabilities than your mothership, such as a sportfishing vessel, a high-speed yacht for fast island-hopping, or a shallow draft to get in close to beaches. The chase boat can also be a nice option for shared family charters or a couple who likes their own space away from the main yacht.

You get to say things like “mothership”, and “which yacht shall we take today?”

Top tip: When choosing a chase boat, choose something with really nice accommodation, so that the people who stay there don’t feel like an add-on to the charter.

What Happens if You Can’t Find the Right Yacht/s?

Time is of the essence when booking big charters. Whether you’re seeking one of the rare large-passenger yachts, a fleet of yachts, or a yacht with a chase boat, you’ll have more limited options, particularly in peak season. If your plan for your large group charter doesn’t work out, there are a couple of things to consider:

Day Cruises and Parties in Port

Just because yachts only have licenses to sleep 12 guests overnight, doesn’t mean you can’t host larger numbers on board for meals and parties. Licensing restrictions like these vary by country, so contact your Bluewater broker about whether you can still have a day cruise offshore with extra guests or throw a big party while on the dock.

The Supernumerary Secret

Some superyachts have additional accommodation for staff or extra staterooms, so if you are travelling with private staff like a nanny, PA, or beautician, speak to your charter broker about listing these members of your party as supernumeraries rather than guests. You can then have the full complement of 12 invited guests in addition to your personal staff.

There’s nothing worse than planning a dream charter, only to realise you can’t invite everyone you want. The key to big number charters is organising as early as possible. Plan in advance with Bluewater to have the fleet of your dreams ready to take care of your yacht charter.

Family sailing: The secrets of cruising with kids

  • Theo Stocker
  • April 30, 2021

Theo Stocker speaks to a variety of cruising sailors in order to get their best tips on what to do and what to avoid when going family sailing

yachts with friends

As sailors, you’re likely to share your passion with your nearest and dearest. Family sailing offers the promise of quality time with your family, adventures and memories for the children and passing on your love of the sea, whether they are your own children, nephews, nieces, grandchildren or those of friends.

Family sailing isn’t without its challenges, however. How do you keep your crew happy , warm, fed, entertained and occupied within the confines of a small boat? And how does life aboard change as children grow from babies and toddlers to teenagers?

More importantly, how do you ensure that going sailing is a positive experience for everyone involved, and that they are going to want to come back next time?

Unlike navigation or boat handling , there are no courses or text books for family sailing. The particular challenges will be different for everyone, depending on the children’s age, temperament, and how many of them there are, the size of your boat, your level of experience, where you sail and the kind of sailing you’re planning.

yachts with friends

The Kavanaghs are a family of four: Bruce, Abi, Skye (7) and Savannah (5), with a Warrior 40 based in Gosport. Photo: Abi Kavanagh

We’ve canvassed a diverse group of skippers who sail with an array of family arrangements, including as grandparents, parents and teenagers, from liveaboard cruisers to open-boat adventurers, and those raised with salt in their blood to sailing novices. Their wisdom has been gained through years of family sailing and discovering by experience what works and what doesn’t.

It’s easy to put a child off sailing with an initial negative experience, but a positive one can be the start of a life-long passion for the sea. Clearly, the sailors in this article have found how to make family sailing a success, and hopefully their advice and experiences will help you do the same.

Starting slow

The most formative time for your children will be the first few times you sail with them, says Olly Perkins. ‘Children and teenagers are quick to decide if they like something or not and it would be very easy to put your kids off sailing for life if you are not careful. Most importantly, don’t be too ambitious.

Even one eight-hour passage in a lumpy sea could give children the impression that sailing is always unpleasant.

‘Start off with small trips, building up excitement towards big adventures. It took us years before we first ventured out of the cosy confines of Chichester Harbour , once we did we were so thrilled to be able to leave harbour.’

Abi Kavanagh agrees that, initially at least, plans should be modest. ‘We have found that for any given trip we do less sailing than we did pre-kids and never push as hard, but as they get older this is changing. We’ve done a few very early morning departures with the kids still asleep and late evening sails after they have gone to bed which have worked well.’

You don’t even have to leave harbour if you don’t want to. ‘Sometimes not going anywhere is as much of an adventure with young children,’ says Hamish Southby Tailyour. ‘On a mooring just use the boat as a base for the weekend with a barbecue or pub supper ashore. At anchor stay there an extra day, relax and see who turns up in the evening.’

Having all the mod cons isn’t necessary either. Conrad Humphreys and daughters enjoy river cruises in an open boat. ‘We’ve been mainly cruising around Devon and Cornwall, exploring the rivers closer to home,’ he says. ‘We love the Yealm and the upper reaches of the Tamar and Lynher Rivers are just fantastic for a small, shallow draft boat like Bounty’s End . This year we plan to explore the River Fal and venture down to the Scilly Isles , which should be a reasonable passage in an open boat.

‘Our biggest challenge when away for longer trips is keeping Bounty’s End ’s batteries charged, as she is fully electric with only a small capacity to charge when under sail. We either carry a small generator or make sure we can spend the night in a marina for an overnight charge if necessary.’

Attractions ashore

Think about where children would choose to go. ‘In the early years, we favoured beach anchorages, and that now holds true with our small granddaughters,’ says Ken Endean – and beaches were the most popular by consensus.

yachts with friends

Exploring creeks and camping overnight by a fire is the ultimate adventure for kids and adults alike. Photo: Hamish Southby Tailyour

Priorities change as children get older, however. ‘Teenagers are more alert to foreign cultures and places that are off the normal tourist track, while unfamiliar wildlife, such as dolphins, is always a bonus,’ says Ken. ‘Our actual passage planning was not greatly affected by having youngsters on board: a cruise should be safe and comfortable, whatever the ages of the crew.’

Planning small adventures works well, says Perkins. ‘We loved visiting beaches, fishing and going on “expeditions” – in other words, walks we hadn’t done before.’

Meet others

Family sailing is also about the people you’ll meet, says Hamish Southby Tailyour. ‘Plan to meet with friends either afloat or on the beach on your cruise. Row over, with your children, to any boat with other children onboard sharing the anchorage or marina. Join Kids4Sail , a subset of www.noforeignland.com. This totally changed our cruising and connecting with other boats with children in the Med.’

Erin Carey agrees. ‘When cruising with children, the destinations you choose to visit will often revolve around where the other boats with kids are. This gives them the chance to make playmates and allows parents to have a break. It’s truly amazing how quickly families on boats can become friends, with the common interest of keeping the kids sociable, well-rounded creatures.’

Don’t fight the weather

‘I am much more mindful about the weather, picking and choosing the days when I know sailing will be enjoyable for us both,’ says Graham Snook. ‘This is probably one of the most important things I’ve learnt.

‘Being divorced, the dates I have Ella are set in advance so if the weather doesn’t look good, we don’t go sailing and use the boat as a base instead. Last year the two weeks over the holiday were beset by strong winds; we still went to the boat but did different things around Gosport instead.’

Family sailing planning

One piece of family sailing advice from Hamish is to get everyone involved with the planning. ‘Google maps, electronic charts – get your digital natives helping. Ask them and give no more than two choices, both that are acceptable to you.

Our eldest was eight and the twins six when we took the plunge and purchased our first boat, says Frank Thorogood. Photo: Frank Thorogood

‘You may need lots of expectation management. Pubs, ice-cream, the draw of good free Wi-Fi connections, and time on the beach are obvious incentives, but funfairs, skate parks and a land visit to the local lighthouse have all proved to be tempting destinations.’

Family sailing safely

Safety is essential, but sailing shouldn’t be a list of dos and don’ts, says Olly Perkins. ‘Have only a few rules, but emphasise their importance.’

‘Rules were an integral part of our liveaboard lifestyle,’ says Erin Carey. ‘When you are above deck underway, you are tethered with a self-inflating lifejacket, no matter what. When we were anchored, they were not allowed on deck without a buddy, and never before we were out of bed.’

Everyone agreed that either lifejackets or harnesses are necessary underway when family sailing, and when the boat is stopped and children are on deck or on the pontoon, that a flotation device is absolutely essential.

‘Ella initially wore a kids lifejacket ,’ says Graham Snook, ‘but it was bulky and uncomfortable. Below decks, she’d take it off, but then change her mind and want to come back up on deck. It was much easier for her to wear a harness that was comfortable enough to wear all day.’

A few basic rules:

  • Lifejackets or harnesses to be worn whenever underway, and lifejackets to be donned on the pontoon.
  • Keep hands clear of winches.
  • One hand for the boat and one for yourself.
  • When sleeping at night the children have to tell us if they’re going up on deck alone.
  • Take care getting in and out of the dinghy
  • Bottoms-first going down into the cabin.

Skills to learn

‘I’ve taken time to show Ella how to use the VHF radio,’ says Graham Snook. ‘I test her on how she’d react if anything happened.’

yachts with friends

Even younger children can be taught basic safety roles, like using the VHF or pointing to a MOB. Photo: Abi Kavanagh

Practising drills is important, particularly when family sailing says Abi. ‘We practise man-overboard drills, where everyone has a role. Our youngest focuses on pointing at the casualty. Our eldest presses the DSC button and places the Mayday call on the radio. Early in the season we try to get them to practise floating in their lifejackets, so that they understand how it works. Doing this in a swimming pool is fun.’

Going to the toilet underway can be an issue, says Hamish. ‘Make going in a bucket in the cockpit whilst at sea normal. It’s easier and safer and you can help them easily without going below yourself. Children can also become dehydrated quickly, which makes them more clumsy, grumpy and can make them more susceptible to seasickness, so keep them hydrated.’

‘Kids have an amazing ability to have fun,’ says Frank Thorogood, ‘and our three were no exception in finding out what parts of our days on the water they enjoyed.’

‘All of life is on board a cruising boat, from practical and cerebral skills, nautical and domestic, food preparation and cleaning, but also the psychological – seeing their parents solve real immediate problems in a calm logical way is a wonderful legacy to pass on,’ says Hamish Southby Tailyour.

Some jobs are more fun than others! Photo: Hamish Southby Tailyour

‘There are a multitude of mathematical opportunities to learn. There is the fun of knot-tying and rope-throwing competitions, but give them names that describe how they are used: not a clove hitch, a fender knot; not a rolling hitch but a lee cloth knot; and not how far can you throw a rope, but can you lasso a cleat, or even your brother?

If it’s dark and you notice the phosphorescence, stop putting the children to bed and jump in for a swim. The lasting memories are worth the effort of a midnight swim in the phosphorescence with your children.

Help them keep a daily journal with drawings and scraps stuck in, or a video log. Set up your own traditions. We have pancakes every Sunday, and this doesn’t change when we’re on the boat.’

Inside Games

Julia Jones says a boat is ‘a great space for family reading aloud.’ Frank Thorogood agrees that plenty of books are essential, as well as audiobooks. ‘Our son Kemmel is dyslexic, and on the voyage down to Cornwall audiobooks of the Harry Potter series were brilliant for him.’

Games are essential for family life on board. ‘There’s usually some game that everyone gets obsessed by,’ says Julia.

‘Liar Dice was very popular when I was little, or gambling with matchsticks,’ says Julia. ‘Gameboys suited the millennial children.

I’ve come to dread iPhones as we are not strong on battery power, so long-lasting battery packs are very useful.’

‘Down below we keep a stock of sticker books, colouring books, modelling clay, paints and books to read,’ adds Abi Kavanagh. ‘There are also some good stop-motion apps that you can download and we have made some stop-motion animations with the things they have created.’

‘Musical instruments are a must so they can join in with others who you’ll meet along the way,’ adds Hamish Southby Tailyour.

Outside Games

There’s plenty to occupy children on deck without getting off the boat. Julia says, ‘My brothers and I used to spend hours climbing around without touching the cabin floor or the side decks or whatever the challenge was. I often welcome visiting children and find that being encouraged to climb in and out of the forehatch never fails to provide amusement.’

‘When getting off the boat isn’t an option, we sometimes put a paddling pool on the foredeck and give them a variety of containers to play with,’ says Abi Kavanagh.

Hamish adds, ‘The Star Atlas by H E Ray and red head torches is a wonderful and easy way to learn the constellations. Mast-swinging and jumping from the boom are our best activities. Set up the fender board or passerelle and make them walk the plank. Hammocks are a must.’

yachts with friends

At anchor swimming, playing in the dinghy and fishing can keep children occupied for hours. Photo: Olly Perkins

‘We have a fishing rod and some hand lines,’ says Conrad Humphreys. ‘We also tow an inflatable paddleboard which the kids spend many an hour jumping off or exploring the mud flats.’

As for equipment for playing, Hamish recommends, ‘Sand castle-making equipment and snorkeling gear, tractor inner tube and an SUP board, wetsuits and rash vests, and things for a barbecue. Or use rope, fenders, oars, boathooks, deck brushes and the passerelle to make a raft.’

If the children are getting cooped up, however, ‘always make sure the kids can let off some steam on dry land,’ says Olly Perkins, ‘and remember sandy beaches are always a winner!’

Exploration and independence

‘Children probably learn more seamanship when commanding a dinghy than while steering their parents’ big yacht,’ says Ken Endean. ‘When the girls were nine and six, we built a small folding boat, Sugarlump, in which they played Swallows and Amazons when at anchor. Sugarlump has been refurbed and is about to be given to our granddaughters.’

Young people thrive on being challenged, says Hamish Southby Tailyour. ‘Give them slightly over-age responsibility. Send them off rowing on a long floating line.

Let them steer with the outboard and lean to start and stop it, practise coming alongside and how to balance the dingy. Heather has been steering with the outboard since she was seven, and by 11 was confident and competent enough to take the dinghy ashore alone under outboard to collect some friends.’

Living Aboard

When it comes to sleeping arrangements, a dedicated bunk is not always an option,’ says Erin Carey. ‘Our kids actually loved being in the one cabin together. Sturdy lee cloths are a must, and we kept ours up even when anchored. It’s also important for them to put up their drawings and posters, to have somewhere to keep their little trinkets and shells they have collected, to make it feel like home.’

yachts with friends

Having some personal space in a bunk is important and should be respected. Photo: Hamish Southby Tailyour

Hamish Southby Tailyour agrees. ‘A personalised space, however small, is vital especially as children get older; somewhere that is theirs and respected as such. Allow them to put pictures around their bunk.

‘We installed shelves and installed individual phone-charging points at their bunks and a designated hook for a head torch just helped with the children’s chaos of a cabin.

‘They will spend much time in their bunks and that is okay, and the more it is their space the better. For parents, forfeiting the forepeak is worth doing, if only so you can have some adult time after they have gone to bed.’

Separate cabins aren’t always an option, however. ‘Peter Duck is very open plan so we just have to cram in and use the floor if necessary,’ says Julia Jones. ‘She was designed for two but luckily they were large!

‘This means that side berths are quite wide so it’s possible to squeeze adult and child together on one if necessary. Loved-up teenagers have also used this facility. There’s also a quarter berth, which is great once you’re in, and a fo’c’s’le berth by the heads. By modern standards there’s no privacy and not much comfort, but I love it.’

yachts with friends

Safety is imperative but try not to overwhelm children with a daunting list of rules. Lifejacket etiquette is a must however. Photo: Julia Jones

Children will enjoy making do in small boats, Ken Endean says. ‘Small children seem to regard a yacht’s cabin as a kind of playhouse and very small ones will happily make a nest in a quarter berth. When at anchor, our girls occupied the fore-cabin and usually slept undisturbed.

‘On rough passages, the most secure place for children below deck is a proper sea berth, with raised side panels or lee cloths.’

Babies on board

‘For babies, a box-type carrycot is ideal for both transport and sleeping,’ recommends Ken. ‘It can be lifted like a briefcase and lowered on to someone’s knees in a tender, all without disturbing the occupant. And on a hard beat to windward, Mary found breast- feeding kept little ones quiet without having to juggle bottles and other equipment.’

As they grow, a portable travel cot can come in handy. ‘When they were little they slept with us or in a Phil & Teds Pack’n’Play,’ says Abi Kavanagh, ‘which had the advantage that it packs up really small and has a zip on one of the side panels so that you don’t have to lift the baby out of the top, particularly useful in low spaces.

yachts with friends

‘I know a lot of people use slings or carriers for babies,’ she added. ‘We always worried about what would happen if the adult wearing the baby went overboard, but I can definitely see the advantage of being hands-free.’

When excitement is high, getting children to sleep isn’t always easy. ‘We do our best to stick to bedtimes; no one wants a cranky five-year-old on a sail the next day,’ says Abi Kavanagh. ‘We try not to have two big sailing days concurrently, though obviously this isn’t always possible.’

‘Our children are old enough now that bedtimes don’t vary much whether at home or on the boat,’ says Frank, while Julia Jones likes the variety. ‘Days on the water are outside normal routine. They have routines but these are determined by the weather and the tide and what you’re trying to do.’

Hamish Southby Tailyour says the only routine they have to stick to is brushing their teeth, although ‘having stories read to them whilst tucked deep in their bunks’ was a firm favourite.

Charging up

‘One important thing to consider when cruising with kids is power consumption,’ says Erin Carey. ‘The amount of amps drawn by charging laptops, iPad, Kindles, EarPods, and portable speakers can be mind boggling.

yachts with friends

Audiobooks and games are a must for down-time but make sure you have sufficient charging capacity. Photo: Frank Thorogood

‘The endless array of cords and chargers is equally as frustrating. Having a dedicated charging area somewhere central in the boat is one way to deal with this. Another solution is to use portable batteries for the devices. These can be charged up during the day when the solar is at its best, ready for the night time.’

When it comes to mealtimes, sharing the work is all part of life aboard, says Hamish Southby Tailyour. ‘Simple tasks we always ask our children to help with include laying the table, serving up the portions, dish- washing and drying up, putting away and the daily cleaning of the decks, heads, and cooker. More importantly Heather now mixes an excellent gin and tonic and pours a good beer.’

For smaller children, ‘plastic trough bibs help to keep food under control but the children must be well-wedged if they are inclined to eat with both hands,’ says Ken Endean. ‘On a couple of very lumpy Force 6-7 passages, both our girls ate lunch while sitting on the saloon floor.’

When you’re in a foreign country, going to buy food is a great way to explore, says Erin Carey. ‘Trips ashore to the market are a great way to interact with the locals and to get fresh produce. Having the kids handle the money, find the right vegetables, weigh them and barter with the shop owners really builds their confidence.’

Conrad Humpreys prefers a more relaxed approach when he is going family sailing. ‘I’m not one for fussing too much about victualling the boat with endless supplies of food, preferring to either forage, fish, or find a local pub, but if we are away with the kids, then Vikki always manages to sneak onboard some flapjack or chocolate brownies to keep the wolves at bay. There is always some emergency freeze-dried food if we do get caught out.’

‘Food on a boat doesn’t have to be worse than food at home.’ says Olly Perkins. ‘Have special food which the kids particularly like – pizzas are a good shout. But our favourite was the “yummy cupboard”. This was filled with snacks that we’d rarely see at home.’

C onnor McDavid and his fiancee Lauren Kyle are spending some quality time together this offseason. Earlier this week, McDavid was seen waterboarding behind their yacht while Kyle filmed him.

They recently had a small get together with McDavid's brother Camerron and his family and friends on holiday. Kyle posted a series of pictures and clips on her Instagram story from their get-together where the McDavids tried authentic Italian wood-fired pizza.

In one of the pictures Cameron McDavid's wife Sarah Nanacsik posed with Kyle and their dogs as they enjoyed the outdoor party. In another snap, the gentlemen posed together in white tees including Connor and Cameron McDavid.

Lauren also shared a short clip on her story showing how wood-fired Italian pizza is placed in the ‘oven' to be fried. Wood-fired pizza is cooked in a brick oven using hardwoods like oak.

The wood fire heats the bricks, which then cook the pizza. This method evenly cooks the pizza, enhances its flavors, and gives it a delicious smoky taste.

Magic Johnson Kicks Off Annual Star-Studded Couples Yacht Trip Through Europe

Nobody does a couples trip like NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. Every year, Johnson and his wife Cookie host a trip around Europe via yacht with some of their favorite people, many of whom are public figures. The couple kickstarted their latest tour in Barcelona.

“We are officially on vacation!! 😁,” the 64-year-old said as the caption to photos with a few of the other couples in their finest threads and a few shots of them enjoying fine dining. “Hanging out with our great friends John and Vicki Palmer and Sam and LaTanya Jackson at Boca Grande in Barcelona, Spain! The food was *chef’s kiss*” he wrote.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Earvin "Magic" Johnson (@magicjohnson)

After visiting Barcelona, the couples’ next stop on the summer tour was the party city of Ibiza. They indulged in seafood and enjoyed some serene views from the yacht and were joined by another star couple, Cedric the Entertainer and his wife , Lorna.

“Today Cookie and I enjoyed a beautiful day in Ibiza, Spain,” he wrote. “We had a wonderful lunch at Juan Y Andrea Formentera with our friends John and Vicki Palmer, Sam and LaTanya Jackson, and Cedric the Entertainer and his wife Lorna. I encourage everyone to have lunch right on the beach at Juan Y Andrea. We ate the catch of the day, fresh sea bass and lobster… So delicious!”

In 2023 , the Johnsons toured Europe and had quite a few celebrity friends come along for that trip. In addition to Samuel L. Jackson and his wife, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, and Vicki and John Palmer, they spent time with Judge Greg Mathis and his wife, Linda Mathis, as well as Michael Jordan and his wife, Yvette Prieto. Johnson also had his kids join the trip last year, including Andre and his wife Lisa, his son EJ and daughter Elisa, and their grandchildren Gigi and Avery.

Some highlights of the trips usually include top-tier meals from a private chef and Fourth of July celebrations. We look forward to seeing where the couples land next and living vicariously through them!

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

What happened to ileisha dell after below deck sailing yacht season 4, the golden bachelor: gerry turner wants to get back together with theresa nist (his recent behavior proves it).

  • Chase Lemacks sailed on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 and started a YouTube series, Chasing Grace, showcasing his maritime travels.
  • Chase has forged friendships with other Bravo stars, such as TJ Dinch from Southern Hospitality.
  • Chase could be a potential replacement for Gary as first mate in future Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons, given his performance and lack of drama during his time on the show.

Chase Lemacks hasn’t stopped sailing on yachts since Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4. The Below Deck spin-off premiered in 2020, spotlighting the crews on sailing yachts as they navigate the highs and lows of the charter season . Captain Glenn Shephard leads Below Deck Sailing Yacht , and the rest of the cast frequently rotates. Daisy Kelliher has remained on the show since its first season while the rest of the crew has shifted.

Chase joined Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 as a newcomer, working as a deckhand under Gary King. The two exterior team members didn’t necessarily see eye to eye and did not form a close friendship. One of the main storylines of the season stemmed from Daisy, Gary, and Colin Macrae’s season-long love triangle . However, the season was later tainted when accusations of sexual misconduct about Gary were revealed. It’s unclear where the fate of the show will lead and if Chase will return as a deckhand in the Below Deck franchise.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

Chase Has A YouTube Series

Chase vlogs his sailing adventures.

Since Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, Chase has started a YouTube series entitled Chasing Grace . In his YouTube channel bio, the deckhand revealed it was his dream to sail the world. “ After countless hours of hard work and loads of sacrifices, I'm finally ready to purchase my boat, Grace ,” wrote Chase. On the channel, he posts vlogs sailing to different destinations . Chase has a true passion for maritime travel, and he’s proved that with his Chasing Grace YouTube series that gives fans a better look into his life outside of Below Deck .

Chase Has Hung Out With Fellow Bravo Stars

Chase is friends with this southern hospitality star.

Even though Chase isn’t on a Bravo series at the moment, he’s forged friendships with fellow network stars . On his Instagram, Chase posed with TJ Dinch from Southern Hospitality , whom he seemingly hosted aboard his boat. The deckhand thanked him for being “ an amazing guest ” and added he was “ stoked ” about their friendship. It may seem out of the blue for Chase and TJ to be friends, but their meetup isn’t that out of the ordinary. Southern Hospitality is based out of Charleston, South Carolina, the same state where the Below Deck Sailing Yacht deckhand is from.

Chase's Journey On Below Deck

Chase didn’t get along with gary.

Chase had an interesting journey on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4. He hadn’t appeared on the show before and joined as one of Gary’s deckhands. Early in the season, Chase expressed an interest in stew Mads Herrera . Gary disregarded his deckhand’s intrigue and started hooking up with the stew himself, causing tension among the deck team . Instead of mending their conflict, they acted passive-aggressively towards each other. Chase called out Gary’s lack of leadership, citing that he gave “ no instruction ” and he and Alex Propson were “ expected to know everything ” on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen .

Will Chase Ever Return To Below Deck Sailing Yacht?

Chase should replace gary.

Chase should return to Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 . The fate of the show is up in the air after allegations of sexual misconduct were made against Gary. However, there’s no reason that Chase shouldn’t be invited back to work as a deckhand again. Despite a lack of guidance, he did well in his role and worked well under pressure. Chase didn’t get involved in much drama during the season, positioning him as a viable candidate to return to Below Deck Sailing Yacht in the future. If not, he could make the switch to another Below Deck franchise.

Chase could be a potential replacement for Gary as first mate in a future season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht . Season 5 had begun filming with the first mate when the accusations of sexual misconduct were made public. It would be shocking if the network decided to bring Gary back for another stint on the show after Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, as it’s uncertain if that footage will even air. Chase would be an adequate, unproblematic replacement for Gary in the future.

Since Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, Chase has started sailing the world. He clashed with first mate Gary on the show but didn’t get too heavily involved in any drama. Chase deserves to return for a future season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht .

Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Peacock.

Since arriving in Ibiza, the Johnsons’ friend Cedric the Entertainer, 60, shared a vacation selfie. In the comic’s post, he’s seen looking directly at the camera in a woven fedora and a white short-sleeve button-down, with the Ibiza port in the background.

“Pulled on #Ibiza pronounced “Ebitha” by the locals. #gallavanting #abroad,” he captioned the selfie on Tuesday.

Later on, Jimmy Kimmel inserted himself into the getaway, photoshopping pics of him and his wife, Molly McNearney , with the three couples.

The recent post follows Kimmel’s ongoing “request” over the past eight years to join the Johnsons on their annual summer vacation.  Johnson has joined in on the joke , and at the end of his 2023 travels, he shared an Instagram carousel of altered images from his six-week excursion with Cookie and their family and friends and included photos of Kimmel, 56, and his wife.

Elon Musk mocks Mark Zuckerberg's big hydrofoil swag moment, says he prefers to work instead of having fun on yachts

  • Elon Musk has weighed in on Mark Zuckerberg's latest viral stunt.
  • The Meta CEO posted a video of himself hydrofoiling while wearing a tuxedo. Musk wasn't impressed.
  • "May he continue to have fun on his yachts. I prefer to work," Musk said of the video.

Insider Today

Mark Zuckerberg may have wowed his fans with a badass video of himself hydrofoiling on Independence Day, but Elon Musk certainly doesn't seem impressed.

"May he continue to have fun on his yachts. I prefer to work," Musk wrote in an X post in response to the video .

Zuckerberg went viral on Thursday after he posted a video of himself surfing on a hydrofoil to Facebook and Instagram. In the clip, the Meta CEO can be seen waving an American flag and taking sips from a can of beer, all while dressed to the nines in a tuxedo.

"Happy birthday, America!" Zuckerberg captioned his post.

Representatives for Musk and Zuckerberg didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from BI sent outside regular business hours.

This, of course, isn't the first time Musk has thrown shade at his tech-world nemesis.

In June 2023, Musk challenged Zuckerberg to a cage match following reports that said Meta was building an X rival .

Zuckerberg initially agreed to the request but brushed aside the proposal after months of back and forth. Musk, however, hasn't forgotten about the fight.

"If only Zuckerberg were as tough (sigh). I've offered to fight him any place, any time, any rules, but all I hear is crickets," Musk said in an X post on May 15, a day after Zuckerberg celebrated his 40th birthday .

Zuckerberg isn't the only yacht-owning billionaire that Musk has accused of being a slouch.

In 2021, Musk made a similar remark about his fellow space baron, Jeff Bezos . The SpaceX CEO told the Financial Times in an interview then that Bezos should spend more time on his rocket company, Blue Origin.

"As a friend of mine says, he should spend more time at Blue Origin and less time in the hot tub," Musk told the outlet.

Bezos, it seems, paid no mind to Musk's zinger and has gone on to enjoy some hot yacht summers.

To be sure, Musk is no stranger to yachts.

In July 2022, he was seen lounging on a yacht in Mykonos, Greece, with Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel and his fashion designer wife, Sarah Staudinger.

Haha damn, maybe I should take off my shirt more often … free the nip!! (already back in the factory btw) — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 18, 2022

"Haha damn, maybe I should take off my shirt more often … free the nip!! (already back in the factory btw)," Musk wrote in an X post on July 18, 2022.

That getaway was a rare moment for Musk, who's famously said that he hates taking vacations.

Musk once came close to dying in 2000 when he contracted malaria while vacationing in South Africa.

Musk said the trip, which he took after Peter Thiel ousted him as PayPal CEO, was his first real vacation from work. Musk was booted from PayPal while on his honeymoon with his first wife, Justine Musk, a few months earlier. "In the last 12 years, I only tried to take a week off twice," he said in 2015 . "The first time I took a week off, the Orbital Sciences rocket exploded, and Richard Branson's rocket exploded in that same week."

"The second time I took a week off, my rocket exploded ," Musk said.

"The lesson here is, don't take a week off," he added.
