Tax for Yacht Charters in the Bahamas

What is the cost of tax for yacht charters in the Bahamas? From the 1st of July 2022, a new 10% VAT rate will be levied on the total charter fee, and is applicable to all yachts cruising in Bahamian waters. The new 10% levy does not replace the current 4% cruising fee which remains payable to the Port Department. 

All yachts wishing to cruise within the archipelago must now register for VAT in the Bahamas and receive a Bahamian TIN number.

Foreign-Flagged Yachts in US Waters

There are strict and complicated rules governing commercial yacht charters (non-private) cruising US waters, which in general means that only US-flagged yachts or US built yachts with a coastwise endorsement can conduct yacht charters in the US. Furthermore, yachts that are available for charter are considered to be "engaging in a trade" and thus ineligible for a US cruising licence. Most luxury charter yachts are also not US duty paid.

As the majority of the charter fleet are foreign-flagged yachts, Bahamas yacht charters will likely begin outside of the US, usually in the Bahamian capital of Nassau where there is a large busy international airport.

That said, it is possible to pick-up charter guests in the US so long as the yacht's next port of call is outside of US waters. This can be a good option for those wishing to meet the boat in Florida and cruise down to the Bahamas from here.

Where Should I Begin My Yacht Charter in the Bahamas?

The vast majority of yacht charters in the Bahamas embark and disembark in the country's picturesque capital  Nassau , which is home to its best-known international ports, dotted with top-rung marinas all along its azure waters. The city is justly renowned for its throng of fine-dining options, boutiques, hip eateries, and casinos fringed by towering palm trees. Nassau is also conveniently located for cruising to the Exumas and beyond.

For a real respite from the crowds, it's common for yacht charter guests to embark their vessel at Marsh Harbor on the  Abaco Islands ,  where you can trace the mesmerizing string of sandy cays that can be found here. Its shores, a serene and shimmering topaz, are perfect for dropping anchor and taking the toys for a spin.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Bahamas by Yacht?

One of the great joys of choosing a Bahamas yacht charter is that its balmy climes and shallow waters make it more or less ideal to cruise all-year-round* .  But the Bahamas does have a peak season from mid-December to mid-April. The average temperatures of both Bahamian summers and winters are unsurprisingly tropical: hovering between 24-29 degrees and rarely dipping below this. 

During the summertime (from May until October), guests can expect endless sunshine and some humidity, while from November until April, the Bahamas has a slightly cooler temperature and colder waters.

*However, whilst Bahamian weather is pleasingly warm all-year the islands do fall within the hurricane belt, running from June until the end of November along the US East Coast and the Caribbean. The Western Caribbean's own hurricane season usually starts from mid-September until early November.

Nevertheless, it is worth keeping in mind that hurricanes in the Bahamas are fairly infrequent, and even less so than on the US East Coast.

• North Eleuthera Airport: an international airport that is best for reaching the quaint Eleuthera and Harbor Island.

• Weather conditions and wind strength play a crucial role in anchorage spots in the Bahamas, so plan any overnight anchorages accordingly.
• Some anchorages can be a bit of a challenge to set: it's common for heavy grass to cover a large section of some of the better spots to drop anchor 
• Anchorages that appear to have a sandy bottom can oftentimes be just a thin layer of sand over a coral reef or rock, making it difficult to dig the anchor in. Don't be misled by them!

In the north of the archipelago you'll find the Abacos : widely considered to be the boating capital of the Bahamas thanks to its unique geography. When booking, keep in mind the additional costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely tax and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The Bahamas are made up of more than 700 islands and countless (over 2400) cays to explore and is rimed by one of the world's great barrier reefs. This impressive reef system surrounds the reef-and-key sheltered waters, providing 100 miles of relaxed cruising in the relatively shallow safety of The Sea of Abaco . This natural beauty draws in many luxury yachts, sometimes visiting from different parts of the world.

The Bahamian island chain begins with Bimini, just 45 miles from Miami , stretching all the way to the Turks, 500 miles to the southwest. The Bahamas is a brilliant charter location that has either excitement or serenity, depending on your mood, and is also within easy access for both American and European yacht charter vacations. Presently the Bahamas are very popular amongst crewed luxury superyachts, whether the boats are for charter or they are private owners' use. However, back in history, this is where Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492 and has in earlier days been an area sailed by swashbuckling pirates and privateers looking for places to bury their plunder in the many secluded anchorages. In many places little has changed since these early days and the Bahamas still features exceptional sailing on the warm Gulf Stream, turquoise waters and moderate winds.

Favourable Conditions for Yacht Charter Vacations

The islands of Bahamas are known for their favourable sailing conditions and the shallow waters in many parts make for an interesting watch of marine life below the surface.  Bahamas boast of more than 2,400 cays and this is another reason why you should do your next yacht charter vacation here. The cluster of islands is also home to some of the barrier reefs that are made from a corals formed over several thousand years ago. The reefs offer natural protection from the lashing waves of the open sea and they also provide shelter to many small marine species. From Bahamas yachts can cruise for around 100 miles right towards the shallow waters of the Abaco Sea.

The island cluster of Bahamas begins from Bimini which is 45 miles from the coast of Miami. The cluster then extends to the Turks which is 500 kilometres distance. If you are looking for a serene place to spend your yacht holidays then Bahamas is a great choice. The location is such that it is easily reachable from most of the US coastal cities. It can also be accessed easily from the charter destinations in Europe. As mentioned before, Bahamas consists of more than 700 islands and a total of 2,400 cays. Catamaran Charters

The Bahamas has some of the most amazing beaches and warm inviting water of anywhere in the world. They are simply beautiful. Perhaps one slight drawback is that some of the most alluring are relatively shallow. Larger private luxury yachts can be slightly disadvantaged as a result and may have to anchor well of shore or avoid certain particular areas. This makes shallow draught boats the ideal way to see the islands. Catamarans make an ideal choice of boat to rent, if you love sailing, as they don’t have the deeper keels of larger sailing yachts. Shallow draught motor yachts are also able to charter well here. There are some larger catamarans available as well as different superyachts that visit the island chain each year.

On Land Discoveries & History

The Arawak people originally settled the Bahamas. The islanders are well known for their laid-back friendliness and hospitality, to this day. Before or after your yacht charter, inland you can see the Sunbury Plantation House which is a great Jacobean mansion that was built in the days when sugar was king and a cottage was the size of a castle. Also you can whet your whistle at the well-known Mount Gay Rum Distillery, where you can sample the many varieties of the island's most famous libation.

When it comes to natural wonder the Barbados has plenty to offer. You can explore Harrison's Cave, a unique phenomenon of nature, where colossal stalactites hang from the ceilings, stalagmites thrust up from the ground, and streams of crystal-clear water drop from breath-taking falls into emerald green pools. At Orchid World, the meandering paths are abundant with Phalaenopsis, Cattlyeas and Dendrobium orchids, while Andromeda Gardens showcases some of the island's rarest tropical ferns, heliconias and cacti. At Whim Gully, examine closely the bearded fig tree from which the island is believed to get its name.

Pink Sands in The Bahamas

Nassau, a bustling town on New Providence Island and the capital of the Bahamas is the place to yacht charter if you like action and great nightlife. It has an enviable array of restaurants, glitzy casinos, and sophisticated hotels. Nassau is also a great base for your private yacht with its ideal beaches, Atlantis, the mega-resort and marina, traditional British Colonial architecture and Paradise Island.

Paradise Island is connected to New Providence by two bridges and has marina facilities. Eleuthera is a 100-mile narrow island with late-1700s architecture and famous pineapple plantations. Harbour Island, Eleuthera's neighbour, is styled in Georgian architecture and the Spanish Wells community in the north is known for good fishing. Southeast of Eleuthera lies Cat Island - the "high land" of the Bahamas. Eleuthera is also a popular yacht charter vacation destination and features high cliffs and an obvious link into a long past civilization. The Exumas , which straddle the Tropic of Cancer, are recognized as the sailing and yacht charter capital of the Bahamas, with 365 cays that appeal greatly to sailors.

What's in a name, a kittiwake is....

The catamaran has a special name that reflects its seagoing character.

According to Wikipedia, kittiwakes are a seabird species in the gull family Laridae. The name is derived from its call, a shrill ‘kittee-wa-aaake, kitte-wa-aaake’.

They have a white head and body, grey back, grey wings tipped with solid black, and a yellow bill. They can have either black or red legs.

In contrast to the dappled chicks of other gull species, kittiwake chicks are downy and white since they are under relatively little threat of predation, as the nests are on extremely steep cliffs. Unlike other gull chicks which wander around as soon as they can walk, kittiwake chicks instinctively sit still in the nest to avoid falling off.

Kittiwakes are coastal breeding birds ranging in the North Pacific, North Atlantic, and Arctic oceans. They are the only gull species that are exclusively cliff-nesting.

Kittiwake’s owners are Mark Cohen and Leigh Scott, a married couple who live in northern Virginia. Mark is the board chair of Creative Planning Trust Company. He’s also an instrument-rated pilot. When he’s not in the office, Mark enjoys flying his Cirrus airplane, woodworking, photography, and all kinds of outdoor sports. Leigh is a vegan chef. When she’s not in the kitchen, Leigh enjoys gardening, photography, and all kinds of outdoor sports. Leigh also serves as the Executive Director of a philanthropic nonprofit called the Healthier, Greener, Kinder Foundation .

But before boarding a luxury vessel, superyacht captain Kelly Gordon advises keeping certain things in mind. Yachting is a summer pastime with risks and nuances for clients and crew. One of these images is likely what comes to mind when you hear the word "superyacht," a phrase generally used to describe a yacht over 80 feet in length. While ultra-luxurious vessels are associated with all things carefree, tragic events such as the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily on Monday is a reminder that yachting is a pastime with unique risks and nuances. It's unclear what the protocols were on the Bayesian. For those keen on the idea of chartering a superyacht, captain Kelly Gordon, 42, told Business Insider there are a number of important factors to consider before hopping on board. Gordon fell in love with yachting after she stepped aboard a yacht for the first time in her mid-20s. Hellbent on reaching captain level, Gordon quickly worked her way up the chain of command. She's spent most of her time sailing the Bahamas and the Caribbean and is now based in Florida, where she works as a captain on a 108-foot-long privately owned vessel. Gordon, who has over 12,600 followers on Instagram , shares three factors to keep in mind before boarding a chartered superyacht. Think of the process of chartering a superyacht as buying a house One of the most important things to do when chartering a superyacht is to work with a charter broker, Gordon says. "The charter manager's job is to No. 1: find you a safe boat," Gordon said, adding that in her experience, "Not all programs put safety as high up on the list as it should be." She also likes to equate charter brokers to Realtors in that they take on the role of finding you the best option for your taste. "You find one that you gel with really well and has a good reputation, and then you discuss with them what your budget is, where you want to go, what your activity levels are, what your personalities are like," Gordon said. Pairing clients with a crew that aligns with their characteristics is a huge part of a charter broker's job, Gordon said. "If you think about it, you're living with that crew for 24/7, around the clock," she said. "You're not going put someone that just wants to sit and read books all day with a crew that's extremely active." Find a crew that is competent and prioritizes safety Charter brokers also help match clients with a competent crew that prioritizes safety. "I don't know that many people realize just how much their life is in our hands when we cast those lines and we go to sea," Gordon said. Part of that is having a safety briefing, which Gordon carries out every time she welcomes clients onto a chartered vessel before leaving a dock. A thorough safety briefing includes informing clients about the location of safety equipment and lifejackets and the procedures for events such as a fire, a person falling overboard, or the boat sinking. "You should have a safety briefing, and if you don't get one, you should ask for one," Gordon said. The process, she added, can be different on privately owned yachts, where passengers may be familiar with the vessel. The Bayesian is a private yacht owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch; it's not yet known what kind of safety protocols staff and guests were trained on. Make sure there's a member of the crew on watch 24/7 "A lot of charter guests think when they go to sleep, the crew goes to sleep," Gordon said. But that shouldn't be the case, she added. "You want to be on a boat knowing that someone's up, because if the weather changes or the anchor starts to drag, you need somebody that's up and ready to go and get everybody else to handle it." Among the biggest weather risks are tornados, which can be extremely difficult to predict and prepare for whether you're on land or at sea. "I'm from the Midwest, where tornados pop up," Gordon said. "It's hard to see a tornado coming, and if you do see it coming, the tornado goes where it wants to go." Most often, that leaves people near the weather event with just minutes to ready themselves, which is even trickier "in the middle of the night." While rapid changes in weather are tough to contend with, Gordon recommends researching the areas you are sailing in beforehand, like you would when visiting a new country. "It's no different than if you're going on vacation on land," she said. "You want to know where you're going. Don't put that just all on the crew." While the research doesn't have to be as extensive as the crew should be doing, it's important to still be "responsible for your own self as well as your family and your guests."
