US billionaire's superyacht arrives in North Vancouver for repairs
A massive superyacht belonging to a US billionaire has docked at a North Vancouver shipyards for repairs during the COVID-19 pandemic, a trip the ship’s owners say was “essential.”
The 100-metre long Attessa IV arrived in Canada from Port Angeles, Washington on June 30 after receiving clearance from the Canada Border Services Agency, according to Tim McHugh, executive vice president with The Washington Companies.
“It will remain dockside until likely the end of September when the repairs are expected to be complete,” he said.
The boat is owned by Montana businessman Dennis Washington, who owns majority stake in a collection of corporations known as the Washington Companies. He also owns the Canadian group of companies known as Seaspan.
Washington is known to have a passion for remodelling yachts. The Attessa IV was created from the hull of another yacht known as the Evergreen, and the skilled renovation received attention from the yachting community . The boat currently sails under the Cayman Islands flag.
McHugh said that all the yacht’s crew members were tested for coronavirus prior to boarding, and they were all tested again on June 19 and declared healthy.
“Each have been individually cleared by CBSA for entry to Canada with the ship to perform their duties during the repair period,” he said.

CBSA spokesperson Judith Gadbois-St-Cyr said she couldn’t comment on specific cases, but said the agency monitors all ports of entry — land, sea, and air — and enforces coronavirus restrictions now that the US-Canada border is closed to non-essential travel.
Even though the border is closed, all Canadian citizens are still allowed through.
International arrivals must self-isolate for 14 days, Gadbois-St-Cyr said. But there are exceptions, including workers involved in essential services, economic supply chains, and critical infrastructure projects.
Healthy people who have to cross the border to commute to work are also except from mandatory isolation if they are asymptomatic.
Finally, workers who are critical to Canada’s economy and infrastructure such as truck drivers, firefighter, and medical workers will still be allowed through, Gadbois-St-Cyr said.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the Attessa IV was 100 feet long. The yacht is in fact 100 metres long.

B.C. welcomes high rollers: A peek into the world of superyacht tourism
- Share by Email
Greg Norris walks along the docks at Victoria International Marina on a sunny Friday afternoon, fielding phone calls and making sure everything is flowing well.
On any given day, the marina welcomes many yachts that choose to stop in B.C.’s capital. Most recently, a US$35-million sailing yacht by the name of Athos docked. On July 14, crew members could be seen getting the 62-metre long vessel ready for its next sailing.
Athos isn’t the only superyacht to enter B.C. waters; not far away off Cattle Point is a $100-million superyacht called Anawa. The Anawa is owned by a Brazilian billionaire and has been near Victoria since May 2023.
Over on the mainland, a $200-million vessel called Attessa V (AV) has been drawing attention in North Vancouver . Dennis Washington is listed as owning AV and his network of companies includes Washington Marine Group and Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver, where Kyle Washington, Dennis Washington’s son, is executive chairman.
For Norris, the CEO of Victoria International Marine, B.C. is starting to put itself on the map when it comes to attracting superyachts. For a long time, many international travellers would bypass the province altogether and head for Alaska, he says.
“Those yachts down in San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle and Tacoma that used to come up and just bypass us because they didn't know there was anything to do and now they're turning in and stopping and spending some time,” says Norris.
Superyacht owners are spending locally
As part of his job, Norris spends time arranging for superyacht owners to visit Victoria businesses. That includes connecting them with local jewellers.
“When they are visiting here, they're looking to spend money on art, and in the community, on all kinds of things: food and real estate and buying from retailers,” explains Norris. “They're just like any one of us: they go into a store, they like something, they buy it. It's just that they might buy a lot more.”
Sometimes superyacht owners will fly their friends in, and will put them up in nearby hotels, he adds. Crew members will often stay in hotels, too.
"They're all spending [money] locally.”
Unfriendly Canadians?
However, Canadians’ friendly demeanour and politeness appear to not have transferred to the superyacht community, Norris tells Glacier Media.
During his time marketing B.C. internationally, he says that specific boating community has been ‘grumpy’ towards him after learning he’s from Victoria.
"They basically said B.C. and Victoria, in particular, is one of the most unfriendly boating places in the world that they've seen,” said Norris. "I would say barring pirates."
He questions if the animosity is because the public does not get to interact or be ‘welcomed into the community’ of superyachting.
“They don't get a chance to meet these people and see them so they don't know who they are,” he says. "It’s this mystery."
The public can come down to the dock and walk around to see the boats, something Norris welcomes.
‘Exciting way to see the world’
According to Norris, the superyacht industry creates job opportunities for young people.
He tells Glacier Media that the marina has a high staff turnover as employees end up working on the bigger yachts.
“We're open to it. We don't think that that's a bad thing if they come on, and that's their career,” he says. “If they're hard-working, the yachts pick them up. There’s not a lot of them being trained in the region purposefully for that."
Norris adds yachting is an exciting way to see the world.
“You come down, you work here for a little bit and you have a really good chance of getting on one of those boats and just seeing stuff you would never see.”
The marina, he says, is actively hiring and looking for people interested in the marine industry.
Superyacht repairs being done in B.C. shipyards
Superyachts need an incredible amount of work to keep them running, and much of that work is being done locally when they arrive, says the CEO.
"There are well over 100 industries that it touches: everything from fuel, to ship repair to almost anything you would have in a house you would have in a yacht,” says Norris.
He believes more yachts will start coming to Victoria and having their work done in the shipyard.

'Super yacht' with Vancouver connection involved in fatal collision at sea
- Share by Email

A luxury superyacht rebuilt several years ago in North Vancouver for the billionaire owner of Washington Marine Group has been involved in a fatal collision at sea near to San Diego.
The collision happened off the west coast on the evening of Oct. 26, about 14 kilometres from San Diego near the United States-Mexico border.
The U.S. Coast Guard received a call from the Attessa IV about 7:45 p.m. advising the 332-foot yacht had collided with a 65-foot sports fishing charter boat, Prowler, and that “Prowler sustained some pretty significant damage to its rear starboard quarter,” said Joel Guzman, public affairs spokesman for the San Diego Coast Guard station.
The Coast Guard launched a Jayhawk helicopter, 45-foot medium response boat and the Coast Guard cutter Sea Otter to the crash site and arrived on scene about 8:45 p.m. where 17 people from the sports fishing charter boat were taken on to the coast guard vessel. Three people were injured, including one man who had critical head injuries, said Guzman.
He was airlifted by helicopter to shore and taken to hospital.
The San Diego medical examiner’s office confirmed 66-year-old Richard Neff of San Clemente later died of those injuries.
Guzman said an investigation is now underway to determine why the ships collided, which includes speaking to everyone on board both vessels at the time of the crash. The investigation could take several months, said Guzman.
There is no word on who was among the 28 people on board the yacht at the time of the collision.
Records of ships’ movements show the Attessa IV left North Vancouver July 8 and travelled down the west coast arriving in San Diego Oct. 15.
The yacht left San Diego following the crash and is now in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Attessa IV, which is registered in the Cayman Islands, is one of the largest privately owned yachts in the world. It was bought in 2007 by Dennis Washington, a U.S. billionaire whose network of companies includes Washington Marine Group and Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver, where Kyle Washington, Dennis Washington’s son, is executive chairman.
The mega yacht was extensively rebuilt in a three-year project by Washington Yachting Group in North Vancouver, in the same shed where the three ill-fated Pacificat fast ferries were put together by shipyard workers in the 1990s.
The luxury yacht, which has been featured in a number of yachting and lifestyle magazine articles, features its own on-board helicopter and landing pad, spa, gym and pool, and opulent guest quarters including sculptures by Henry Moore and a hanging glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly.
