In 1634, in England, Sir Simon de Canterville agrees to take his wounded brother Anthony's place in a duel with the diminutive Sir Valentine Williams. The portly Simon demands that the duel be fought with lances, but to his horror, Sir Valentine also claims injury and sends his enormous cousin to the duel in his stead. After the first pass, a terrified Simon flees on his horse and hides in an alcove in the Canterville castle. Valentine pursues him there, but Simon's proud father, Lord Canterville, insists that his son would not tarnish the family name by hiding. As proof of Simon's courage, Lord Canterville agrees to have the alcove bricked up and, despite Simon's pleas, condemns him to die in the tomb and walk the castle's halls until a Canterville descendent commits a brave act while wearing Simon's signet ring. In 1943, the now-deserted Canterville castle, with its infamous ghost, Simon, is besieged by a platoon of American soldiers, who are to be billeted there. The castle's current owner, the precocious six-year-old Lady Jessica de Canterville, who lives nearby with her aunt, Mrs. Polverdine, greets the soldiers and tells them about the castle's haunting. The men, led by Sergeant Benson, are at first skeptical of Jessica's claims, but change their minds when Simon appears before them that night, moaning and striking ghastly poses. When one cocky soldier, Cuffy Williams, decides to scare the ghost back by chasing it in a sheet and gas mask, Simon disappears up a chimney. The next morning, the soldiers, exhausted from their previous night's activities, are reprimanded by their commander, Lt. John Kane, who refuses to believe their ghost tales. Seeing that Cuffy is limping, Kane orders him to clean the castle, while the rest of the platoon drills in the surrounding woods. Cuffy is soon joined by Jessica and insists on introducing her to Simon. After overcoming her fears, Jessica talks openly to Simon, who reveals his father's curse and bemoans his lonely entrapment, which has been prolonged because all of his descendents have been cowards. Jessica then notices that Cuffy has the Canterville birthmark on his neck and speculates that Cuffy is a Canterville and is brave enough to break the curse. That night, Jessica and Simon question a bemused Cuffy about his English ancestors and confirm their suspicions that he is a descendent of Simon's nephew. Simon then asks Cuffy, whom he calls "nephew," to wear his signet ring into battle, and Cuffy agrees. Later, at a party hosted by Mrs. Polverdine, Cuffy, who is proud of his newly discovered noble heritage, overhears some locals laughing about the Canterville family and questions Simon about it. Taking Cuffy to the castle's portrait gallery, Simon sadly explains that whenever one of his Canterville descendents faced a life-threatening situation, he would grow scared and run. Cuffy assures Simon that he will not let him down, and the following day, the platoon is called to duty. The platoon's assignment is to blow up a refinery on enemy soil, and Cuffy's job is to defend against German counterattacks. As Cuffy nervously awaits the explosion, Simon realizes that Cuffy forgot his ring and materializes with it on the battlefield. Cuffy accepts the ring just before the bomb blast and, while Simon watches from the bushes, joins his partner, Trigger, at a machine gun. After Trigger is killed by a German, Cuffy tries to take over the machine gun, but becomes paralyzed with fear and is replaced. Later, the platoon returns to Canterville castle, and Cuffy learns that he is being transferred. A depressed Cuffy then informs Jessica, who had been praying for his success, that he is a coward like all the other Cantervilles. As Jessica walks home in tears, however, she sees a parachute falling to the ground and runs to tell Cuffy and Simon. Jessica leads Cuffy to the parachute, which turns out to be carrying a large German bomb. Realizing that if the bomb explodes, the platoon, which is drilling in the woods, will be destroyed, Cuffy starts to attach it to his jeep. Once again, Cuffy becomes overwhelmed by fear, but overcomes his terror when an hysterical Jessica begins to kick the bomb. As Simon rides on top of it, Cuffy races the bomb away from the woods and jumps from his jeep just before it explodes into the castle. His brave deed finally accomplished, Simon thanks his "nephew" and "niece" and disappears into a peaceful eternity. Later, at Simon's newly constructed gravesite, Jessica confesses to Cuffy that she will soon be turning seven.

Jules Dassin (1911-2008) - TCM Schedule Change for Director Jules Dassin Memorial Tribute on Friday, April 20th
The film opens with a brief prologue in which an offscreen narrator discusses "Simon de Canterville" as one of the "famous ghosts of England." Hollywood Reporter news items and production charts add the following information about the production: M-G-M purchased Oscar Wilde's story in August 1939 as a vehicle for Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart. (In the Wilde story, "Lady Jessica," the part played by child star Margaret O'Brien, was an older character.) In 1943, after 38 days of shooting, Norman Z. McLeod was replaced as director by Jules Dassin. Hollywood Reporter reported that McLeod was leaving due to a "difference of opinion;" modern sources state that McLeod was fired on the insistence of star Charles Laughton. Robert Planck replaced William Daniels as director of photography when McLeod left the production. Bob Crosby was scheduled to perform in a non-singing role in the film, but did not appear. Although Mary McLeod, Will Stanton, Ethel Griffies and Jack Lambert were listed as cast members in Hollywood Reporter news items and production charts, their appearance in the released film has not been confirmed. In addition, Hollywood Reporter announced that former M-G-M grip Fred Beckner was to make his screen acting debut playing a "Ranger" in the picture, but his participation in the completed film has not been confirmed. Some scenes were shot at Busch Gardens in Pasadena, CA. The Canterville Ghost marked the reunion of Robert Young and O'Brien, who had appeared together in the popular 1942 M-G-M film Journey for Margaret . The film was to be shown to overseas forces prior to its U.S. release. In January 1945, Randall Faye filed a $100,000 lawsuit against M-G-M, alleging that the studio plagiarized his story "You Belong to Me," which he claimed to have submitted to M-G-M in 1943, when it made The Canterville Ghost . The disposition of that suit is not known. Among the many other adaptations of Oscar Wilde's story are the following television versions, all titled The Canterville Ghost : On September 28, 1949, the ABC network broadcast a version directed by Fred Carr and starring Wendy Barrie and Edward Ashley; the NBC network broadcast a version on November 20, 1950, starring Cecil Parker and Margaret O'Brien, as part of its Robert Montgomery Presents Your Lucky Strike Theatre program; on April 12, 1951, the Du Mont network broadcast a version directed by Frank Wisbar and starring Lois Hall, Reginald Sheffield and Bruce Lester; in May 1953, Ziv TV produced a syndicated version, directed by Sobey Martin and starring John Qualen and Connie Marshall; a musicalized adaptation, written and produced by Burt Shevelove and starring Michael Redgrave, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Peter Noone, was broadcast on the ABC network on November 9, 1966; and on October 15, 1986, Paul Bogart directed John Gielgud, Ted Wass and Andrea Marcovicci in another syndicated version.

After entering production over a decade ago, the latest animated adaptation of The Canterville Ghost is set to hit the big screen this Halloween. Based on Oscar Wilde 's short story of the same title, the movie follows the titular ghost as he recruits a brave young girl, Virginia Otis, to free him from an eternal curse. Promising comedy and kid-friendly spookiness in equal measure, The Canterville Ghost looks to be a great Halloween watch for people of all ages. Keep reading to find out everything we know so far about The Canterville Ghost .
Following its release in the United Kingdom and Ireland on September 22, 2023, The Canterville Ghost will be released theatrically across the United States on October 31, 2023 - right in time for a Halloween family movie night. Regarding when and where The Canterville Ghost will be available to stream, it was recently reported that the movie is set for a "strategic rollout across multiple platforms" . The Canterville Ghost's United States distributors - Blue Fox Entertainment and Shout! Studios - leads us to speculate that the movie will likely be available on Prime Video or Apple TV+ when the time comes, joining a vast collection of Blue Fox movies on these platforms.
Set to hit screens this fall, The Canterville Ghost is an animated comedy perfect for those wanting to indulge in the upcoming spooky season without the scares. The movie centers on the quirky ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville, cursed to roam his sprawling castle for centuries. To free himself from his endless boredom, Canterville must find a courageous human willing to perform a brave deed. Cue Virginia Otis, a curious and unshakable American who moves into the castle with her family. When Canterville fails to scare the Otises away, he's pleased to realize that Virginia could be the key to his long-awaited freedom. Together, the unlikely pair must outwit The Ghost Catcher and The Reverend to bring peace to the household once and for all.
Signature Entertainment released a trailer for The Canterville Ghost on their official YouTube channel in August 2023. Among the hilarious collection of scenes, it's revealed that every previous owner of the Canterville castle was scared away by the titular ghost. However, the new owners Mr. and Mrs. Otis aren't phased by this news and vow that they're "here to stay" - to the disappointment of their teenage daughter Virginia, who admittedly hates her strange new home. This all changes when Virginia discovers the spirit of Sir Canterville is never far away, and comes to learn that her new adventure might be more fun than she first expected. Spooky, chaotic, and fun, it seems The Canterville Ghost might just cement itself as one of the best family-friendly Halloween movies of 2023.
The Canterville Ghost is adapted for the screen from the legendary poet and playwright Oscar Wilde's children's short story of the same title. First published in the British literary magazine The Court and Society Review in 1887, The Canterville Ghost has since been adapted into movie, television, and radio format several times. The first of these movies was a Hollywood blockbuster in 1944, starring Charles Laughton in the title role. Following this came a Soviet animated movie in 1970, a Bollywood movie in 2008, and a French-Belgian movie in 2016. 2023's The Canterville Ghost began production over a decade ago, with a first look revealed in 2014 and an initial 2016 release date planned. The movie was subject to unprecedented delays, but fans will finally see it join an impressive legacy this fall.

Positive Role Models
Sir Simon De Canterville is a ghost who has haunted his house for 300 years and scared away all newcomers. He feels frustrated when the new family aren't scared and feels guilty about his wife's accidental death. After losing control and causing harm to another person, he apologizes and asks for forgiveness. The Otis family arrive from the United States and aren't scared of Sir Simon. Hiram Otis behaves rationally toward Sir Simon and approaches him with curiosity. Teen girl Virginia doesn't like her new home and bets Sir Simon that he can't scare away the family in the hope that he'll manage it. She is adventurous and bold, and eventually helps Sir Simon reunite with his wife. Twin siblings Kent and Louis are often rude and enjoy playing pranks.
Culture clash between a family from the U.S. and Victorian-era British people. Aristocratic Brits are shown as grotesque and mentally ill. All main characters are White, while the voice cast has people of color. An old-fashioned ghost is shocked to see a young woman wearing trousers.

Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that The Canterville Ghost is an animated adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic ghost story. Set in Victorian England, the movie's culture-clash set-up centers on an American family moving into a house that's been haunted by the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville (voiced by Stephen Fry ) for the past 300 years. He tries to scare them away, but they're more curious than terrified. The movie has scary moments; nothing gets too intense, but there is quite a bit of discussion around death. The Grim Reaper ( Hugh Laurie ) holds a sand timer to represent life and says that it goes by quickly, with the moral being to make the most of it. A character is accused of murdering his wife, and a young couple strikes up a chaste relationship. Violence includes sword fights and danger/peril when a character is trapped under a chandelier in a burning building. Another character dies during a scene in which she's helping someone but ( spoiler alert ) is revived. The film has positive messages about friendship and teamwork. What's the Story?
In THE CANTERVILLE GHOST, grumpy ghost Sir Simon de Canterville (voiced by Stephen Fry ) has scared away everyone from his house for the past 300 years. But he meets his match when the Otis family move in and refuse to be afraid.
Is It Any Good?
This functional retelling of the Oscar Wilde ghost story provides enough entertainment for younger viewers venturing into the world of spooky movies. The Canterville Ghost is lighthearted but suitably gothic, and comic relief is provided by a cocky pair of prankster brothers. Fry gives a spirited performance as the grumpy ghost, Sir Simon De Canterville, and is reunited with his former comedy partner Hugh Laurie , although his role as the Grim Reaper is fleeting. Indeed the concept of death haunts the movie, which may be troubling for the youngest of viewers, although it strongly presents the idea of an afterlife. Elsewhere Miranda Hart 's wacky ghosthunter, The Ghost Catcher, grates. But with strong messages of friendship, teamwork and courage, The Canterville Ghost is a solid adaptation that covers some tough subjects.

THE CANTERVILLE GHOST ★★
G, 88 minutes, in selected cinemas
Oscar Wilde is animated in The Canterville Ghost.
Call me unimaginative, but I can’t picture the spirit of Oscar Wilde expressing more than half-hearted enthusiasm for the latest adaptation of his 1887 story The Canterville Ghost (which has been brought to the screen many times before, most famously in 1944 with Charles Laughton).
When Wilde set out on a quest for artistic immortality, this was almost certainly not what he had in mind. Still, as he himself might have put it, there is only one thing worse than having your work turned into computer animation, and that is not having your work turned into computer animation.
Truth be told, the story itself was never one of his deathless masterpieces. But it’s endured as an even-handed satire on an exceptionally durable theme, the clash between forward-thinking Yanks and stuffy Brits.
The premise is pure sitcom: a down-to-earth US ambassador and his family move into an English country house that comes complete with an old-fashioned, chain-rattling ghost, whose efforts to provoke terror they breezily take in their stride.
Curiously, here even the American characters are played by British voice actors – perhaps one sign of the relatively low budget of this UK-Ireland-India co-production, directed by the team of Robert Chandler ( The Amazing Maurice ) and Kim Burdon ( Fireman Sam ).
On the whole, the screenwriters Giles New and Keiron Self stick surprisingly closely to their source material, throwing in the occasional Ghostbusters reference for the parents or fart joke for the kids.
There are a few other inevitable adjustments. For instance, the spectral Sir Simon de Canterville was originally conceived by Wilde as a dashingly unrepentant wife-killer (“I hate the cheap severity of abstract ethics”).
That might have been acceptable in the free-and-easy Victorian age – but our own times demand a little more moral rigour. Jovially voiced by Stephen Fry, the film’s Sir Simon is soon revealed as harmless under all his bluster, and a perfectly suitable friend for the teenage heroine Virginia (Emily Carey) who undertakes to set him free.
The Canterville Ghost sticks surprisingly closely to the original story.
Inevitable too is the standard-issue action climax (Wilde, by contrast, was willing to let what finally happens between Sir Simon and Virginia remain a teasing mystery). All that said, the filmmakers have come up with a few good ideas of their own, such as recruiting Fry’s old pal Hugh Laurie to supply the voice of the Grim Reaper, represented not as the usual robed skeleton but as a stocky northern-accented gardener pruning his roses.
Technically the animation is about as good as could be hoped for under the circumstances: care has been put into details such as Virginia’s strands of wet hair after she falls in a lake, or the winces and half-smiles of her dithery young admirer the Duke of Cheshire (Freddie Highmore).
But none of this erases a sense of the film as a lost cause, which in turn generates a degree of unintended pathos. Living or dead, all the characters have the same waxwork look, and glide through the halls and chambers of Canterville Chase with a mechanical smoothness which is rather ghostlike in itself.

The Canterville Ghost
The story is about a family who moves to a castle haunted by the ghost of a dead nobleman, who killed his wife and was starved to death by his wife's brothers. The home of the Canterville Ghost was the ancient Canterville Chase, which has all the accoutrements of a traditional haunted house. Descriptions of the wainscoting, the library panelled in black oak, and the armour in the hallway characterise the setting. Wilde mixes the macabre with comedy, juxtaposing devices from traditional English ghost stories such as creaking floorboards, clanking chains, and ancient prophecies. Illustrated by Vladislav Trotsenko.

2023 The Canterville Ghost Barcelona continues to build layers within the thrilling post-apocalyptic horror film franchise that began in 2018 with 2023 The Canterville Ghost starring Sandra Bullock. The most captivating part of this film is the design of the apparitions and the way they utterly decimate the US special-ops forces in an instant. If you’re looking for a fun throwback to the Amblin adventure films of the 1980s, look no further than Shawn Levy’s 2023 The Canterville Ghost original sci-fi film, The Adam Project.

Stephen Fry and Lena Dunham Are an Unlikely Duo in First 'Treasure' Image
Posted: January 16, 2024 | Last updated: January 17, 2024
- Lena Dunham and Stephen Fry star as father and daughter in the 1990s-set road trip film Treasure , set in post-communist Poland.
- The film follows their journey through Poland as they seek to understand their shared past.
- Treasure is part of director Julia von Heinz's "Aftermath Trilogy," exploring Germany's Nazi past, and is set to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February.
Stephen Fry and Lena Dunham are father and daughter in the first look at Treasure . The 1990s-set road trip pic will see the unlikely duo travel through post-communist Poland. The Hollywood Reporter has shared the first image from the film, depicting a gray-bearded Fry sharing a wry glance with Dunham. An adaptation of Lily Brett 's 1999 novel Too Many Men , the film will follow American writer Ruth (Dunham) and her Holocaust survivor father Edek (Fry) as they travel through Poland seeking to understand their shared past. Along the way, Ruth tries to get Edek to come to terms with his traumatic experiences during the war, but he stubbornly refuses, resulting in several tragi-comic situations. The film will also star Polish actor Zbigniew Zamachowski , star of Krzysztof KieÅlowski 's acclaimed Three Colours: White . The film will debut at the Berlin Film Festival in February and is slated to be released worldwide by FilmNation and Bleecker Street later this year.
The film will be directed by Julia von Heinz , who also co-wrote the script with John Quester . It is the third part of her "Aftermath Trilogy," a loosely-connected series of films chronicling Germany's attempts to deal with its Nazi past. It is preceded by 2013's Hanna's Journey , in which a German woman travels to Israel, and 2020's And Tomorrow the Entire World , about a law student who becomes an anti-fascist activist. The latter film was Germany's submission for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar.
Who are Lena Dunham and Stephen Fry?
Dunham first won acclaim with her autobiographical debut feature Tiny Furniture and was subsequently poached by HBO to write, produce, and star in Girls , which ran for six well-received seasons. After a decade-long hiatus from film directing, she had two features released in 2022; the sex comedy Sharp Stick and the YA adaptation Catherine Called Birdy . Dunham is also set to follow in the high-heeled footsteps of Barbie with a Polly Pocket movie , which will star Lily Collins . Fry is a staple of the UK comedy scene and was part of a long-running comedy duo with future House star Hugh Laurie . He has appeared in a number of high-profile productions, including A Fish Called Wanda , Gosford Park , and V for Vendetta . He recently appeared as King James III in Red, White & Royal Blue , and lent his voice to the animated film The Canterville Ghost .
Treasure is produced by Fabian Gasmia and Von Heinz under their Seven Elephants banner, and Dunham for her Good Things Going production company. FilmNation’s Glen Basner and Ben Browning, and Bleecker Street’s Andrew Karpen and Kent Sanderson will executive produce with Good Thing Going’s Michael Cohen .
Treasure is set to debut at the Berlin Film Festival next month, and will be released worldwide later this year . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
