Toilet Paper Boat

Ocean, beach, and water-play are common themes for bathrooms, so why not add a sailboat on your toilet rolls. It’s a cute design which you don’t want to flush down the toilet.

This is so Fun

Ahoy! Learn to Fold a Toilet Paper Origami Sailboat

Share it, boy!

You have absolutely nothing better to do right now than jump up, run to the nearest bathroom and learn how to fold a toilet paper origami boat. Seriously. Bonus points if you’re near a public bathroom and you spend the day re-folding the toilet paper every time someone leaves the stall.

I’m going to let you know right now that I happen to enjoy the crispy, cheap toilet paper instead of the creepy fluffy stuff that feels like I want to punch it, so I can’t attest to how this will hold up on that.

For as easy as this looks, and it is once you have the hang of it, you first few boats will look like utter crap. (Did you catch the poop reference?)

Practice a bunch of times until you figure out the proportions you like for the sail to hull ratio, the fatness or thinness of the sail, etc. You’ll see which folds affect what as you practice.

I found it strangely satisfying to focus on this one simple activity for a while until I mastered it, because my brain has become so sadly unused to focusing on anything.

Instructions For the Toilet Paper Origami Sailboat:

  • Unfold a section of toilet paper against the wall behind where it is hanging.
  • Fold down the 2 corners toward you to meet in the middle.
  • Fold the whole piece back down onto the roll and fold back the 2 edges to make a new point. You can kinda see what’s going on in the photo, but I recommend you watch the video to see this fancy move more clearly.

4. Fold this whole piece back up the roll at the top of this v-shape so you see your original folds. 5. Fold the bottom edge of the t.p. up to just cover the bottom edges of these folds. 6. Fold the little bottom corners under. 7. Now say ‘toilet paper origami sailboat’ 5 times fast.

Why You Must Learn This Important Life Skill

  • It can be your “calling card” for one night stands.
  • You can amuse yourself in the bathroom stall while your 3 year old is trying to poop for 25 minutes.
  • You can hire yourself out for parties.
  • People love when the toilet paper they are about to wipe their butt with has already been manhandled.
  • You will surprise and delight your children.

Here, have a video. it’s easier to see the steps, and I have a special thumbnail with the remains of some random pink nail polish on it.

Here is the nautical shot I took:

Toilet Paper Origami Boat

Toilet Paper Origami Boat Instructions

  • Lift up approximately one and a half “squares” of toilet paper. Fold the two corners down so the edges meet at the center.
  • Lower the toilet paper back onto the roll.
  • Fold in the left and right edges a little. The amount you fold-in is up to personal taste. If you fold-in a lot, the sail of the boat will be narrow. If you fold-in a little, then the sail will be wide.
  • Valley fold the bottom part of the toilet paper up so you have a triangle.
  • Roll the toilet paper down a little so the triangle is centered.
  • Fold up the bottom edge of the triangle. The amount of paper to fold is up to personal taste; a narrow fold will give you a shallow hull whereas a wide fold will give you a deeper hull.
  • Mountain fold the left and right side of the hull of the boat made in the step above. This shapes the bow and stern of the sailboat.

Paper Plate Sailboat

Craft an easy mini sailboat using some basic materials— a paper plate, a craft stick, a toilet paper roll and some paper. Paint and decorate it into an awesome-looking sailboat. Make some paper people to ride in it too!

Paper Plate Sailboat craft

Featured Crafts

Paper Bowl Jellyfish

Paper Bowl Jellyfish

Supplies needed.

  • Paper plate
  • Craft stick or wooden dowel
  • Toilet paper roll
  • Poster paint, tempera, or acrylic paint
  • Paint brush
  • Crayons or colored markers
  • Stickers, buttons, etc. (optional)

Step 1 Paper Plate Sailboat

1 Cut a paper plate in half.

Fold a paper plate in half. Cut along the crease.

Step 2 Paper Plate Sailboat

2 Trim off the plate's curved bottom.

Stack the two halves together. While keeping them aligned, cut a straight line 2½ to 3 inches from the plate's straight edge.

Step 3 Paper Plate Sailboat

3 Assemble the boat.

Position the two halves facing each other so that they form a boat-like shape. Make sure that the edges are aligned, then staple or glue all four corners together.

Step 4 Paper Plate Sailboat

4 Paint the boat.

Paint the boat with a water-based paint like poster paint, tempera, or acrylic.

Step 5a Paper Plate Sailboat

5 Make a sail.

To make a triangular sail, you can start off with a square or a rectangular piece of paper.

a.)   Square - prepare a square sheet such as origami paper. Fold it diagonally in half to come up with a triangular sail.

Step 5b Paper Plate Sailboat

b.)   Rectangle - begin with a rectangular sheet like A4 or Letter-size paper. If you used a small paper plate to make your boat, you may need to cut the paper in half for a smaller sail.

Fold one top corner of the paper down to meet the opposite edge, forming a triangle. Cut and discard the excess paper below the triangle.

Step 6 Paper Plate Sailboat

6 Decorate the sail.

Use crayons, colored pencils or markers to decorate both sides of the sail. You can also put stickers or glue some paper cut-outs.

Step 7 Paper Plate Sailboat

7 Glue a craft stick.

Unfold the sail and apply glue on all four sides of the square. Position a large craft stick or a wooden dowel along one side.

Fold the square again along the diagonal crease. Press on the edges to glue them in place.

Step 8 Paper Plate Sailboat

8 Cut a slit on a TP roll.

About ¾" to 1" from one end of a TP roll, cut a slit just wide enough for your craft stick.

If you used a wooden dowel instead of a craft stick, make a small hole on the TP roll using the tip of a pencil. Make the hole just wide enough for the dowel to get through.

Step 9 Paper Plate Sailboat

9 Position the craft stick.

Insert the bottom end of the craft stick or dowel into the slit or hole. Push until it touches the bottom of the TP roll.

The stick should fit snugly inside the TP roll's slit. If the slit is too wide, put tape around the craft stick to keep the sail steady and upright.

Step 10 Paper Plate Sailboat

10 Put the TP roll in the boat.

Place the TP roll inside the boat. The roll should fit snugly. If it does not, glue the sides of the TP roll to the inside of the paper plate boat.

Step 11 Paper Plate Sailboat

11 Add more detail.

You can further decorate your boat, if you like. Glue some buttons or foam shapes. To get your sailing theme going, make paper cut-outs of anchors, life savers, or flags. You can also draw and cut out paper people to ride on your awesome sailboat.

Though your boat looks all set for sailing, it is not made to float on water. Take it for a fun pretend sailing adventure instead!

How to Make a Cute Origami Sail Boat!

how to make a sailboat on toilet paper

The Spruce / Chrissy Pk

Completed Origami Sail Boat

This is a very simple traditional origami model, the origami sailboat makes a sweet little decoration perfect as decor at a kids party because they stand up, make great table place cards or, folded flat, use as a card embellishment.

You could also attach a long thread and use as a garland, hanging display or baby mobile. There are so many possibilities with this easy to remember the origami model.

This project requires just one piece of square paper. It works best with origami paper that has a design or color that is different on each side.

You can use slightly thicker paper, such as the craft paper used in the tutorial, which has a blue-and-white side and is six inches.

If you're new to origami this is the perfect model to start with and would be great as an origami project for kids. You could also put these little boats in envelopes as a cute card.

Folding the Paper Square to Make a Triangle

Have your paper boat-side up. If you want your sails to be white, have the color-side facing up.

Now fold the paper diagonally. Bring the bottom corner of the paper up to the top and unfold. Next, fold the right corner over to the left and unfold.

Refolding the Paper to Make a Rectangle.

Turn the paper over to the other side, and rotate it as shown.

Fold the paper in half, right to left, and unfold.

Fold the paper from bottom to top, and unfold.

Creating the Sails

Making sure the paper is still white-side up, fold the top and bottom corners to the central crease.

Bring the left and right corners inward together to the top, and then collapse the model as shown.

Insert Paper Corners Into Each Other

Fold the left sail down to the bottom, and then fold it back up. Leave about a centimeter overlap behind as shown.

Tuck the overlap into the pocket of the boat by gently opening it.

Create the Bottom of the Sailboat

Turn the boat over, and fold the bottom corner up to the center. This will be the stand.

Turn the model back over to the other side, and you're finished.

If you want the boat to be flat, you could use a little bit of glue or double-sided tape to stick it down.

Remember that origami takes practice, so take your time and fold as precisely as possible, and you will get a better result.

If you're more advanced with origami, you could also unfold the whole thing and reverse squash fold the bottom stand so it would have an internal pocket. If you're interested in more origami boats, try the traditional one .

Easy Pirate Ship Craft with an Empty Toilet Paper Roll

  • Pinterest 95

This easy-to-make pirate ship craft is a creative project for a rainy day. Pirate fans of all ages will enjoy turning an ordinary toilet paper tube into a seaworthy ship to sail the seven seas.

Ahoy, mateys! Pirate-loving kids are going to love today’s craft. I hope you’ve been saving your empty toilet paper rolls; they’re fantastic for crafts because they’re free and easy to work with. You’ll take that empty cardboard tube and add paper pieces from our printable template to create a simple pirate ship craft your kids will love playing with.

It’s the perfect diy craft for Talk Like a Pirate Day or for a homeschool unit study on pirates.

Let’s get started!

Materials for a Pirate Boat Craft

  • Toilet paper roll – recycle ones that you save or get brand new ones from Amazon if you’re making this with a group of kids
  • Construction paper (white, black, blue, and gray)
  • Scissors – blunt tip ones are safest for little kids
  • Craft glue – we like these glue sticks
  • Thin dowel or skewers with sharp ends trimmed off (sticks work, too!)
  • Pirate ship template – available below

How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Pirate Ship

First, gather all your materials and resources that we mentioned above. It helps make crafting time go more smoothly when you already have everything you need on your work surface. Now, let’s get started.

Step 1: Grab the pirate printables below. Once you’ve received the file, print it on cardstock, and cut and trace the pieces onto construction paper color. Use gray for the anchor, a pale blue for the windows, and white for the skull and crossbones and the sails.

cut out pieces for the pirate ship craft

Step 2: Cut out all the construction paper pieces that you just made using the template.

Step 3: Glue the windows to the toilet paper roll.

windows glued to the pirate ship base

Step 4: Grab two dowels or sticks to make the ship’s masts. Glue two sails on the taller stick, as shown in the pictures. This mast goes toward the front of the ship. For the shorter one, glue one sail about halfway down, reserving the space on top of the mast for the pirate flag.

sails and flag glued to the masts

Step 5: To make the pirate flag, glue the pirate skull and crossbones to the black construction paper flag. Add that to the top of the second stick.

Step 6: Carefully use scissors, the sticks, or a hole punch to poke two holes or slits on the top of the toilet paper roll to insert the sticks. Adults should do this part for younger children.

holes poked in tp roll to insert flags

Step 7: Once the sticks are inserted, use glue around the sticks to plug up the holes and make the masts more secure. A hot glue gun is helpful here since it will hold the masts in place better.

masts inserted into cardboard tube

Step 8: Glue the anchor over the third window on the ship’s base to finish the craft.

anchor added to pirate boat

Voila! You’re done with your pirate crafts. It’s time to set sail on the high seas for a great adventure. Make this tp roll pirate to go along with your ship.

Not only are the pirate ships fun DIY toys, but they’ll make awesome decorations if you’re throwing a pirate party.

completed pirate ship craft for kids on blue background

How do I get the pirate ship template?

Look for the box where you enter your email address below. Once your email is confirmed, you’ll receive the template immediately.

What if I don’t have empty toilet paper rolls?

You can still make this pirate craft even if you don’t have toilet paper rolls. Cut a paper towel tube in half. Make your own cardboard roll using an empty box and a stapler. Or, simply create a tube out of thick cardstock. Staple it together to make it sturdy.

Can I use craft sticks instead of dowels?

Certainly! Leave a little more space between the masts if you’re using craft sticks since they’re wider than the dowels.

How do I get the pirate ship to stand up on its own?

Glue a piece of thick cardboard to the bottom, as you see in the completed pictures. This will help your pirate ship sit upright, which is essential if you plan on using them as decorations. It will also make it easier for kids to move their ships along the surface of a table or floor.

Can kids put these pirate ships in water?

No and yes. If you put cardboard in water, it will get soft, and the whole project will fall apart. However, if your kids want to race their pirate ships, you can sit them on a piece of plastic (to your Tupperware, for instance) so they’ll float on the water.

We hope that you enjoyed this pirate-themed craft for kids. Check out some of our other tp roll projects below!

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make an Origami Sailboat – Easy DIY Instructions

Alex Morgan

how to make a sailboat on toilet paper

Origami, the art of paper folding, offers a creative and meditative way to engage in a hands-on activity. Making an origami sailboat is a delightful project that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In this article, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide to make an origami sailboat, along with some tips and tricks to enhance your folding techniques.

To begin with, you will need a few materials for making an origami sailboat. The most essential material is paper, preferably square in shape. It is recommended to use thin and crisp paper to achieve clean and precise folds. Origami-specific paper or solid-colored craft paper works well for this project.

Now, let’s dive into the step-by-step guide. The process involves a series of folds and creases to transform a simple piece of paper into a charming sailboat. We will go through each step in detail, starting with folding the paper diagonally to create a triangle shape. Next, we will fold the corners to the center, followed by folding the bottom edges upward.

After that, we will fold the paper in half to create a smaller triangle shape. This will form the base structure of the sailboat. Then, we will move on to creating the sail by folding and shaping a portion of the paper. We will make the necessary adjustments and finishing touches to perfect our origami sailboat.

Throughout the process, we will provide you with various tips and tricks to improve your folding techniques and make the process easier and more enjoyable. we will explore different variations and designs for your origami sailboat, including making it larger or smaller, as well as adding additional details to make it more personalized and unique.

Origami sailboats can be a delightful decorative item or a fun toy for children. So grab your paper and get ready to embark on a creative journey as we guide you through the steps of making your very own origami sailboat.

Key takeaway:

  • Making an origami sailboat requires folding paper in specific steps, resulting in a beautiful creation.
  • Using the right type and size of paper is crucial for making a successful origami sailboat.
  • Attention to detail and following the step-by-step guide is essential for achieving the desired result.

Materials Required for Making an Origami Sailboat

To make an origami sailboat, you will need the following materials:

  • A square piece of origami paper
  • A clean, flat surface
  • Optional: ruler or bone folder for precise folds

To begin, place the origami paper colored-side down on the flat surface. Fold the paper in half diagonally, creating a triangle . Then, unfold the triangle and fold the paper in half horizontally. Unfold the paper once again and bring the top two corners of the square together, forming a smaller triangle . Hold the left and right corners of the triangle and pull them apart while pushing the center downward, shaping the paper into a diamond .

Next, fold the bottom corner of the diamond up towards the top corner. Flip the paper over and repeat the previous step on the other side. Open the flaps on the left and right sides to create the sail of the boat. Fold the bottom edge of the paper up to create the hull of the sailboat.

It is important to note that specific origami instructions should be followed for the sailboat design you wish to create. Feel free to explore different origami sailboat designs, experiment with colors and patterns of origami paper, and enjoy the process of making unique sailboats.

What type and size of paper is best for making an Origami Sailboat?

When creating an Origami Sailboat , the choice of paper is essential in determining the final outcome. Consider the following options:

  • Origami paper: This is the go-to option for crafting Origami Sailboats . It is specifically designed for origami projects, offering a thin and lightweight texture. Typically, origami paper measures around 6 inches by 6 inches, which is suitable for most sailboat designs.
  • Paper for larger sailboats: If you’re planning to make larger sailboats, opt for larger-sized origami paper or any square paper of your preference. Keep in mind that using bigger paper will result in a bigger sailboat.
  • Regular paper: In the absence of origami paper, you can use regular paper such as printer paper or colored construction paper. Just ensure that the paper is square-shaped, as folding may be challenging with rectangular paper.
  • Paper thickness: The thickness of the paper plays a role in the sturdiness of your sailboat. Thicker paper will offer better shape retention, while thinner paper may be more delicate. Experiment with different thicknesses to find your personal preference.

Remember, the best paper for making an Origami Sailboat is one that you feel comfortable working with and allows you to achieve the desired folding and shaping. Happy folding!

Fun fact: Origami originated in Japan and has been practiced for over a thousand years. It is not only an art form but also a means to cultivate patience and attention to detail.

Step-by-Step Guide to Make an Origami Sailboat

Get ready to sail away on a creative journey as we dive into the step-by-step guide to crafting your very own origami sailboat . We’ll start by folding the paper diagonally and then move on to folding the corners to the center. Next, we’ll take a look at folding the bottom edges and folding the paper in half. Then, we’ll create the sail of our origami sailboat before adding those final finishing touches and adjustments . Let’s get folding and set sail on this origami adventure !

Step 1: Folding the Paper Diagonally

To create an origami sailboat , you will first need to fold the paper diagonally. Here are the steps:

Step 1: Start with a square piece of paper.

Step 2: Place the paper on a flat surface, with one corner pointing towards you.

Step 3: Fold the bottom corner diagonally up towards the opposite corner to create a triangle shape. Make sure to align the edges perfectly.

Step 4: To ensure a crisp crease, press down firmly along the fold.

Step 5: Unfold the paper back to its original square shape. You should now have a diagonal crease running from one corner to another.

Origami , an ancient Japanese art of paper folding, has been practiced since the 6th century. Its exact origins remain unknown, but it was initially used for ceremonies and eventually became a popular recreational activity. The word “ origami ” comes from the Japanese words “ oru ” (to fold) and “ kami ” (paper). Throughout the centuries, various folding techniques and designs, including the origami sailboat , have been developed. Today, origami serves as a widely enjoyed hobby that fosters creativity and provides relaxation.

Step 2: Folding the Corners to the Center

To fold the corners to the center in making an origami sailboat, follow these steps:

1. Unfold your folded paper to reveal the square shape.

2. Hold the paper with the unfolded side facing down.

3. Fold the top right corner diagonally towards the center of the paper.

4. Crease the fold well to secure it.

5. Repeat the same diagonal fold with the top left corner, bringing it towards the center.

6. Crease the fold firmly.

7. You should now have a triangular shape with two flaps on each side.

8. Fold both flaps inward towards the center, tucking them inside the triangular shape.

9. Press down to secure the folds.

10. After completing Step 2: Folding the Corners to the Center , you can proceed to the next step to continue creating your origami sailboat.

By following these instructions for Step 2 , you will successfully fold the corners to the center, creating the foundation for the rest of the origami sailboat.

Step 3: Folding the Bottom Edges

In Step 3, fold the bottom edges of the origami sailboat following these steps:

1. Turn the paper over so the folded diagonal line is facing downward.

2. Fold the bottom edge of the paper upwards, aligning it with the center crease.

3. Make a firm crease along the folded edge.

4. Repeat the same fold on the other side of the paper, bringing the bottom edge up to the center crease.

5. Ensure both folds are symmetrical and parallel.

6. Make a firm crease along the second folded edge.

7. Unfold the bottom edges back to their original position.

Following these steps will create a clean and precise fold along the bottom edges of the paper, forming a stable base for the origami sailboat to stand upright and sail smoothly.

Step 4: Folding the Paper in Half

  • Take the diagonally folded paper from Step 1.
  • Hold the top corner of the paper and fold it carefully to meet the bottom corner.
  • Ensure perfect alignment of the paper edges.
  • Press down firmly to create a sharp crease in the middle.
  • Unfold the paper to reveal a vertical folded line down the center.
  • Your paper is now folded in half, creating a clean and symmetrical shape for the base of your origami sailboat.

Pro-tip: When folding the paper in half, use your fingertips to gently guide the paper along the crease line for a smooth and precise fold.

Step 5: Creating the Sail of the Origami Sailboat

1. Fold the top edge of the paper diagonally to the bottom edge, firmly creasing the fold.

2. Unfold the previous step and repeat it in the opposite direction, firmly creasing the fold.

3. Rotate the paper so that one corner is pointing towards you.

4. Fold the left corner upwards, aligning it with the top center point of the paper, and crease the fold firmly.

5. Repeat the previous step with the right corner, folding it upwards and aligning it with the top center point of the paper, creasing the fold firmly.

6. Fold the bottom edge of the paper upwards, creating a small flap, and crease the fold firmly.

7. Open up the flap and tuck it into the pocket created by folding the corners to hold the sail in place.

I remember learning how to create the sail of an origami sailboat at a summer camp. One of the counselors showed us the steps, and it was mesmerizing to see a simple piece of paper transform into a boat with a beautiful sail . We spent the afternoon racing our sailboats in a small pond, proudly displaying our creations. This fun and memorable experience sparked my love for origami, and I have since continued to explore different origami designs and share the joy of creating with others.

Step 6: Finishing Touches and Adjustments

After completing the previous steps of folding the paper diagonally, folding the corners to the center, folding the bottom edges, folding the paper in half, and creating the sail of the origami sailboat , it’s time for step 6: finishing touches and adjustments.

To add finishing touches , smooth out any creases or wrinkles on the paper by gently running your fingers over them.

Next, ensure that all the folds are crisp and well-defined . Adjust any edges or corners that are not aligned properly to create a symmetrical sailboat.

Take a moment to examine your origami sailboat and make any necessary adjustments to ensure it stands upright and is balanced.

If you want to personalize your sailboat, decorate it with markers, stickers, or other embellishments. Be mindful not to add too much weight to the paper.

Once you are satisfied with the overall appearance and stability of your origami sailboat , your finishing touches and adjustments are complete.

The art of origami originated in Japan and has been practiced for centuries. Buddhist monks from China introduced it in the sixth century. Origami evolved from a religious and ceremonial practice into a popular form of entertainment. Different techniques and designs, including the origami sailboat , were developed over time. Today, people of all ages enjoy origami as a creative and meditative art form. The origami sailboat , with its simple yet elegant design, remains a favorite choice for beginners and experienced origami enthusiasts.

Marine toilet paper used on a sailboat? Or household toilet paper used on a sailboat? Your thoughts please. With a marine holding tank and macerator.

We never put anything in the toilet that we haven't eaten first. We have a garbage can with a top in every head and everything except urine and excrement goes in there and is disposed of with the other garbage.

We have used household single ply toilet paper in our Raritan manual head for 20 years and never had a problem. I would not use two ply paper though. I think capta has a lot of guests though and those are the times you have to be extra careful. Either explain the fact that they need to go easy with the paper or use the trash can method if you don't trust them.

Charter co that I chartered with for about 6 years had Jabsco manual flush heads on their boats. They always instructed new clients to use no more than a length of paper that measured approximately from elbow to wrist. The only problems they had were with charterers that put paper towels or female sanitary products in the bowl. Macerator pump wasnt used much because you had to be 9 miles off the Florida coast to dump the holding tank.

Electric macerating head has no problem with regular household TP...And breakdown chems in the tank help with the tank emptying....

Trash can with a lid near the toilet. More than half the worlds population does it this way at home. I'm always amazed that the same people that have no problem picking up their dogs sh%# with an inverted plastic bag have a problem with the trash can idea.

We have a PHII. If you really load the toilet up, use half strokes to help prevent clogs.

Peggie Hall HeadMistress said: As long as you use quick-dissolve TP, there's no reason not to flush it...just don't even THINK of flushing a wet wipe down any toilet on boat. However, an "overload" of any TP can clog any toilet...but as long as it is the "quick dissolve" kind, don't panic...just wait an hour and try flushing again. By then it will have dissolved enough to go right on through. A marine holding tank , aka "black water" tank, is where toilet flushes have to go to be held for pumpout at a marina pumpout facility. Because people who use toilets onboard and everywhere else, almost always need to use toilet paper, and because most marine toilets can only handle TP that dissolves quickly, discusions about the use of TP in marine toilets helps to prevent problems that are caused by flushing TP that's too strong to dissolve quickly in the tank...IF it doesn't clog the toilet pump or the plumbing to the tank. --Peggie Click to expand

Fast dissolving TP in our Raritan electric head as already mentioned. What hasn't been mentioned is that for $10 you can buy a hand held bidet bottle you fill with water at the sink. This weird little thing has cut our TP use way down. Leaves more room in the tank for the important stuff.

How to Make Toilet Paper Roll Seed Starters

D o you like to garden? Want to save money while growing your plants and vegetables? Try this simple recycling tip as a way to start seeds. Try these Toilet Paper Roll Seed Starter.

Don’t spend money on those expensive seed starters. Try this simple way to start seeds to save money. Start a garden on a budget.

I love gardening, and I love recycling. Adding to the 2 together just seems like a natural concept. Since we started working on getting our garden together last week, I decided I would get a jump-start on my seeds and get them going too. It seemed like a perfect way to use Toilet Paper Rolls For a Seed Starter.

Can You Germinate Seeds in Toilet Paper Rolls?

Planting already started plants is easy. It is a simple dig a hole and put the plant in. The problem comes in with the price of plants. Some annual flowers can cost up to $5 a plant, depending on where you buy it. Growing plants from seeds are much more cost effective. Even the expensive seeds I have seen are less than a single plant and with a seed pack, you can grow a dozen or so plants for the price of one. Many people don’t like to grow from seeds because they don’t know how or think it is complicated.

How do You Use Toilet Roll Seeds

When you germinate seeds in toilet paper rolls, you do not have to disrupt the roots moving them from from a pot to the ground. The rolls are compostable and will disintegrate in the ground.

How to Start Seeds with a Seed Starter

Make sure you buy good seeds. Do not save the seeds for the year. Those seeds usually do not grow. I do not recommend the seeds from the dollar store either. I rarely have luck with those. This can leave you frustrated.

How to start a garden

We collect toilet paper rolls, so we always have a bunch of them lying around, just waiting for a craft or repurpose. I *think* I saw this idea in a magazine that I was glancing through in the line at a store. But at the time, I was only flipping through, not paying much attention, so I don’t know what magazine it was, if it actually was even a magazine, or if that is even where the idea came from. I just know, I saw it somewhere, sometime, and it stuck in my head until I actually did it.

What you will need:

  • Potting soil I love this kind. It gives me beautiful flowers every time.
  • Gardening gloves

toilet paper rolls – cut down in halves

  • Seeds: There are so many beautiful flower seeds

Pro Tip: I prefer to buy everything online if I can. I hate traveling to a store and not finding what I am looking for. I order online so that I do not have to go out to a store. It is a huge time saver.

How to Make Seed Starter Pots

You will need something to hold all of the toilet paper rolls up. You can use a plastic container if you want. I choose to recycle a box since it is something we have tons of them too.

  • Get the box ready. I cut the top off which had the side flaps attached to it. I could have kept it on, but I didn’t want to always deal with it being in my way.

Fill the box with as many or as little tp rolls as you want for your seeds. I like to fill the box with soil, and then add the rolls in. You can certainly fill each roll on its own.

  • Be sure you are using the right soil. If you are plating veggies, don’t use flower soil. The chemicals are different. Some soils are made for both. That is the kind I have. I recommend using gardening gloves. A lot of potting soil that has fertilizer in it, has cow manure or something similar. This isn’t really something you want on your hands.
  • Now, you can add your seeds.
  • Press the seeds into the dirt and cover them up.
  • Then give your seeds a bit of water and some sunshine. It will not take long before the plants are sprouted and ready for the ground. And since you are using cardboard, it can go directly into the ground, if you didn’t want to worry about taking the seedlings out of the roll first.
