Sanlorenzo has reaffirmed their status as the leading semi-custom yacht builder today after announcing the launch of two superyachts in one day at both the Ameglai Division in La Spezia and their yard in Viareggio. The first to hit the water was the fourth model in the SL104 line, Triple Fun. Sanlorenzo first introduced this 31m superyacht in 2009, presenting the yachting community with a well balanced, distinctive vessel with an extraordinary number of innovations. The second yacht to be launched was the fifteenth SD92 superyacht, Mia Rocca IX. Measuring 27m with a beam of 7.15, this superyacht is the latest addition to the popular SD92 navetta fleet; offering typical Sanlorenzo style, elegance and state-of-the-art technology. Whatever you may have been led to believe, the truth is simple: for most, it’s about using their yachts for precious family time, and for many it’s also about using their yachts for good. There’s a theme that is repeated on countless yachts large and small the world over – superyachting, for most, is not about being seen but rather the opposite. It’s about yacht families and their friends enjoying precious, private moments away from the pressures of demanding business lives and the long hours running those businesses can entail. “I have an extended family, and when our schedules allow we all like to gather on the yacht and spend some quality time as a family,” Douglas Barrowman , owner of the yacht Turquoise , told Superyacht Life back in 2017. “There is no place like a yacht for family togetherness.”  Douglas Barrowman with family A love of the sea, adventure and technology Superyachts and yacht ownership are also a way to explore the world around us, and to interact with and grow to understand extraordinarily diverse communities from remote Pacific islands to the Scandinavian Arctic. It’s something that inspired tech entrepreneur Jasper Smith to combine his love of adventure and his love of the sea with an opportunity for owners to give back while indulging their passion. “I have always had a deep passion for the ocean,” Smith says. “I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau movies and being enthralled at the idea of being challenged by an endeavour.” When he set out to find his own perfect explorer yacht, however, he realised it didn’t yet exist. His answer was to create Arksen. “My aim with Arksen was to create the perfect machines to enable adventure,” he enthuses. “I also wanted to build sustainable boats which considered full life cycles, from material sourcing to recycling.” That’s not all – Arksen also asks owners of its yachts to sign up to a pledge it calls 10% for the Ocean, where they will donate 10% of their vessel’s time to philanthropic activities. “A lot of people who have the money feel a responsibility to try and make sure that the oceans are well looked after,” Smith explains. “The people that are attracted to Arksen are passionate about the ocean and want to go off on slightly more advanced expeditions and trips. With that audience, there is a tremendous buy-in to the boat being for more than just their own purposes.”  Superyachts as a force for good It speaks to the heart of the matter, which is that the superyacht industry and yacht owners in particular have a heart – they care about preserving the environment they enjoy, and they care about the communities they interact with who make them feel so welcome when they visit. For some it’s as straightforward as getting involved in projects with organisations like YachtAid Global . For others, their endeavours become a key reason for yachting. American superyacht owner Carl Allen is a prime example of these philanthropic yacht owners. After selling his company, and having enjoyed chartering and owning yachts as a family for years, Allen set up Allen Explorations to deliver a full programme of projects, ranging from historical shipwreck searches and environmental research to disaster relief. Indeed, Allen’s support yacht Axis played a vital role in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian – one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the Bahamas. “We had to drop everything and help after the hurricane,” says Allen. “ Axis delivered over £700,000 of supplies and made multiple trips to Little Grand island in the Bahamas. Meet a RTW Family and The Most Fun House EVER – Silicon Valley, California Back in Tok, Alaska, we were told by our hosts about a family who had done a round-the-world trip with their two children, and wrote a book about it. Pretty cool. Then, as we were preparing to travel to Santa Cruz, we met with some friends in Utah, and they mentioned this family again, and that they lived in the area we were going to be visiting. Cool. We better meet up with them. So after staying in Santa Cruz, we arranged to meet up with this awesome family. Via email, they invited us to their home, offered us their basement, half their fridge, laundry, showers and a place to stay as long as we want. This awesome family took a year off when their children were 8 and 11. Together they traveled around the world and explored Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America. Incredible adventures, amazing stories. Inspirational tale.  The adults had a fantastic time also, hearing about all their amazing travel stories and viewing their pictures from around the world. The 68 metre Nobiskrug motor yacht Triple Seven is set to undergo a six-month refit at the Amels and Damen Yachting facilities in Vlissingen. The yacht will receive a full respray, modifications to the stabilisers, shaft lines and galley, and a number of “general interior works” as part of her 15-year survey. Triple Seven came under new ownership in August 2020 and is now managed by Moran Yacht & Ship , who will work closely with the yard on the refit. Custom built in 2006 with the build number 777, Triple Seven was designed inside out by Newcruise . The yacht’s last refit came in 2014 and it has a number of standout features, including a sky lounge cinema and nightclub which has its own DJ station, lasers and smoke machines. The 1,393GT interior of Triple Seven provides accommodation for up to 10 guests in five cabins comprising three doubles and two twins, while a crew accommodation is for 18. Triple Seven is powered by twin 2,360hp MTU engines for a top speed of 17 knots, a cruising speed of 15 knots and a range of 4,500 nautical miles. We drove to San Francisco to a wedding, my aunts and uncles are older and it's hard for them to see in long drives outside of our city. This was a treat! It was around 30+ of us. Super friendly customer service, everything was easy and smooth. The bus was clean as a whistle and we were able to play our own music. Bluetooth connected, waters and a TV! We brought our own snacks and a little bit of wine, we had a blast.  We rented a party bus for my husband and I's 30th and it was incredible! Mark was awesome and made sure we all got there and back safely, and we got sooo many compliments from our friends that came. Plenty of space, super clean ride and overall just a great time! Definitely recommend!  Mark was a great help and made sure the day went smoothly for us. I would recommend him and his services. Thank you!  I had my senior ball on 5/5 and Mark was amazing! I found him on yelp and had messaged him starting from February because I knew how crazy prom season would be. Mark arrived on time to pick us up and the bus was clean and spacious. The bathroom on board was an added plus. The pricing is very favorable to other companies and the bus has everything you need. We ended up extending our reservation an hour because we didn't want it to end. We will definitely be using Mark again in the future. First class experience from pickup, journey, to drop off. The Orioles owner, wearing khakis and a team warmup jacket and cap, connected on a pitch (“they were pitching like 2 mph,” he said) and then flipped around and hit left-handed. The results were less successful — he whiffed at the delivery — but Rubenstein, who is right-handed, thought it would be fun to try something new. At 74, the billionaire financier and philanthropist’s career has been driven by curiosity — a desire to see things, in effect, from the other side of the plate. He has moved from legal work to politics, back to the law, then to finance. He launched a podcast and hosted three television shows, bought a copy of the Magna Carta and the Emancipation Proclamation, wrote books, chaired boards and interviewed Kim Kardashian, Elon Musk and the last two U.S. presidents. President Joe Biden has stayed several times at his Nantucket home. Rubenstein also did a rap video of sorts, donned swim goggles and a flotation device to spray fans at Camden Yards with a hose as a guest “Mr. Splash,” and danced on the team’s dugout with the Oriole Bird. He has a penchant for sneaky fun. “David has a lot of money. But David has fun with his money,” said Richard Brodhead, the former president of Duke University, which Rubenstein attended and helped oversee as chairman of its Board of Trustees until 2017. Rubenstein, the son of a mailman and a homemaker, grew up in Baltimore, played Little League baseball, graduated from City College in 1966, and audaciously told friends as an adult that he hoped to one day take a swing at buying his hometown club. He said purchasing the Orioles with fellow investors — the deal he struck values the club and its assets at $1.725 billion — is rekindling his relationship with the city. The group, which initially bought about 40% of the club, will own about 97% when it completes the sale’s second phase in a transaction expected to close later this month. “I didn’t do this to make money,” Rubenstein said during an interview earlier this season in the Camden Yards owner’s box. “But I don’t want to lose money. I have investors, so I want them to make money. But my principal motivation was to give back to Baltimore. And then maybe have some enjoyment.” He doesn’t drink alcohol or coffee and rarely, if ever, vacations. He wouldn’t appear to personify “fun.” With his white hair and glasses, he reminds some of comedian Steve Martin when Martin is button-downed and playing it straight. “First of all, I’d like to thank Steve Martin for his wonderful remarks,” Foo Fighters lead singer and songwriter Dave Grohl said to laughter after Rubenstein introduced the musician at a Washington benefit in May to preserve the National Mall. “Such a wild and crazy guy.”  Since Major League Baseball approved the sale March 27, Rubenstein has strolled the Camden Yards concourses greeting and posing for selfies with surprised fans, autographed baseballs and tossed caps into the stands. He did his “Mr. Splash” stint in the left field stands May 10 and danced on the dugout at a later game while pumping his fist to “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” during the seventh-inning stretch. “It’s not that he isn’t a serious person. He’s a very gifted comedian,” Brodhead said during an interview. “He’s not a ham. It’s very deadpan.” Brodhead paused before adding: “You saw the tape he did of the rap?” Brodhead was referring to a holiday video that Rubenstein, co-founder of The Carlyle Group, one of the world’s largest private equity firms, did for investors in 2014. Rubenstein — in suit and tie — snaps his fingers and bobs his head as he raps. “Takes a lot of brains to do what we do. Looking for a way to make some dough for you!” The unexpected rap celebrated Carlyle’s lucrative investment in Beats Electronics, the headphone company of rapper Dr. Dre that Apple bought that year for $3 billion. Rubenstein did the video wearing a pair of red Beats. “Haven’t done anything like this really since my bar mitzvah,” he says as the rap ends. On May 29, he had Chris Ullman, his longtime communications adviser, whistle the national anthem before a home game. Ullman, an expert whistler, had done the same thing before a basketball game at Duke, Rubenstein’s alma mater, in 2015. In June, Rubenstein posted a video on X of Ullman whistling happy birthday to Orioles catcher James McCann. Rubenstein and his partnership group bought the club from the family of Peter Angelos, who died in March at 94. Angelos’ elder son, John, who was then the team’s chairman and CEO, often talked about the limitations of being a small-market team. MLB teams rely far more than their NFL counterparts on local revenues such as television money to pay their star players and attract free agents. That structure makes it challenging for the Orioles to keep their stars from being plucked away by higher-revenue teams such as the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Orioles have ranked among the bottom five in payroll in each of the past five seasons. “You have to figure out how to keep your players happy,” Rubenstein told the Washington Economic Club, which he chairs, in April. “You want them to stay with you. I’m going to try to do the best I can.”  Carlyle Group senior adviser Edward Mathias said Rubenstein understands that he needs to largely leave decisions about players to others. “He will hire experts to handle the baseball side and he’ll be more attuned to the business side,” Mathias said. Prior to Rubenstein’s arrival, John Angelos had effectively overseen the team’s business side. That was not a role Rubenstein intended to play. But Rubenstein was instrumental in the club’s hiring — announced Monday — of Catie Griggs , who will be its first female president of business operations. Griggs, who served in a similar capacity with the Seattle Mariners, will start the job Aug. 19. For now, his team’s outstanding record and coterie of young stars effectively insulate Rubenstein from fan criticism. “The team is doing very well so people are happy,” he said in the interview. “If we were losing all these games, I wouldn’t be showing up maybe so much, or I’d be hiding out or something. If you’re going to be visible and doing visible things, you will be criticized.” Far from ducking fans, Rubenstein has been mingling with them and inviting some season-ticket holders and others to the catered two-level owner’s suite. On Mother’s Day, the Orioles invited a group of Gold Star Mothers — moms who lost a son or daughter serving in the armed forces — to the owner’s box for the second year in a row. Friendly but not exuberant when meeting fans or guests, Rubenstein shakes hands, smiles and poses for selfies. “He’s very unassuming,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, a Baltimorean who knows Rubenstein from their shared efforts to boost literacy. “I think he’s actually a little shy.” But, Hayden said: “He’s very curious about people and their backgrounds and their history. It’s just part of his personality.” Orioles fan Nicholas Stamatos was surprised to be invited to the owner’s suite with his family for a May game. Stamatos said his ticket representative “asked us if we had plans for Mother’s Day. We had so much fun! There was a slide from the main level into the basement. A swing. Rings for cool tricks A zipline (kind of) A rope bridge. Oh, and a Wii. There was lots of stuff for crafts.
