Japanese man arrested after sailing his yacht to Navy base on Okinawa

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A Japanese yachtsman was taken into custody this week after landing at White Beach Naval Facility, according to the Navy and Japan’s coast guard.

U.S. military police “arrested a Japanese man who landed within the premises of White Beach on a yacht” and reported it to the coast guard at 1:25 p.m. Tuesday, a coast guard news release said. The man was handed over to the coast guard at 3:13 p.m., according to the release.

A spokeswoman for Fleet Activities Okinawa said the man sailed a “leisure vessel” into restricted waters near White Beach. The coast guard towed the vessel away, according to an email from spokeswoman Candice Barber.

“U.S. Security forces responded, and at no point was the security or protection of the base in question,” she wrote. “As a reminder to the public, access to a U.S. Navy installation is restricted to authorized personnel.”

The man identified himself as Minoru Tomono, 77, of Saitama prefecture, just north of Tokyo. He carried no identification and coast guard officials could not immediately confirm his identity, a coast guard spokesman said by phone Wednesday. Some government officials in Japan are required to speak to the media on condition of anonymity.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, the spokesman said.

“We only know that he departed from Yonabaru Marina,” he said. Yonabaru is approximately 12 miles southwest of White Beach across the open water.

The man remains in custody at the Nakagusuku Coast Guard Office. Japan’s coast guard will either release him or forward his case to prosecutors within 48 hours of the arrest, the spokesman said.

If convicted of an offense, the man could face imprisonment for up to a year or a fine of up to 2,000 yen, or $12.67, according to the release.

White Beach Naval Facility, near the tip of Katsuren Peninsula, is used as a staging ground for U.S. Marines and their equipment on Okinawa, according to the Navy Region Japan website.

Enid Pinkney dies at 92 after dedicating life to preserving African American history in Miami-Dade

MIAMI – Miami pioneer Dr. Enid Pinkney has passed away at the age of 92, Local 10 learned Thursday.

A South Florida native, Pinkney dedicated her life to acknowledging and preserving African American history in Miami-Dade County.

Pinkney was born in Miami-Dade in 1931 and graduated from the then-all-Black Booker T. Washington High School.

She went on to work in the Miami-Dade Public School system.

Eventually, Pinkney became a well-known activist in South Florida. Her goal --- to preserve Miami’s Black history.

“People were going to forget the struggle as to how we have come to where we are today,” Pinkney previously told Local 10. “We don’t appreciate that history. All we’re concerned about is what’s happening now.”

Pinkney witnessed that history firsthand, spearheading the charge to erect brand new markers and commemorating three historically Black communities in Lemon City -- now known as Little Haiti.

“It is the people from Lemon City who with a machete and the strength of their backs cleared the land to make Miami what it is today. And we don’t know that history,” she said. “I hope that this begins and serves as an example of our becoming interested in how we got to where we are.”

Pinkney also led the charge to restore the historic Hampton House in Overtown -- the only motel still standing from the days of segregation in Miami.

During the 60s, it was the place to see and be seen in Miami’s Black community, with famous visitors like Muhammed Ali and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Local 10 anchor Calvin Hughes previously sat down with Pinkney as she recalled seeing King as a child.

“He went to Virginia Key Beach. He loved the beach,” she said. “I heard him speak at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He spoke there, and people would go to hear him. He could always draw a crowd.”

Pinkney was a South Florida historian who will be remembered for her passion and pride while working tirelessly to preserve African American heritage.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

“Me after seeing Kylie and Kendall’s shoulders on the yacht in Mallorca,” said fitness influencer @ProteckPhilippe , or PP, in a TikTok clip of her grueling upper arm workout. 

The brunette centered her sweat session around attaining the slenderized look of the A-list sisters, Kylie, 26, and Kendall, 28, who cut toned physiques while vacationing on a luxe cruiser off the coast of Spain in June.  

“Yacht shoulders,” PP captioned the post, which muscled up over 7.6 million views from digital audiences — many of whom had a bone to pick with her for starting yet another Kardashian-spawned trend. 

A newcomer to the body-modification movement, “yacht shoulders” are slim, chiseled shoulders accompanied by a slight neck and chicly prominent collar bone. 

However, unlike the viral “TrapTox” craze, which sees beauty belles injecting Botox into their trapezius muscles for leaner looks, women of the yacht shoulders swing are flocking to the gym for the enviable exterior.

Health tastemaker Nathalie Jennings echoed Rose’s sentiments in a separate snippet of her own shoulder-sculpting routine on a machine. 

Natalia, a lifestyle influencer, also took to TikTok, boasting , “So happy to announce that I do, in fact, have yacht shoulders,” she wrote in the closed captions of her post. “So blessed.”

But, unfortunately, not everyone sees the ultra-trim trend as a blessing.
