Some important things to consider before booking your yacht;

• Yachts tend to spend more time at anchor in Croatia, so you need to consider that when choosing your perfect yacht. Ideally, find a yacht that is comfortable with ample leisure and entertainment facilities onboard. 
• Avoid heading into Dubrovnik when the big cruise ships are in town, these vessels can hold some 3,000 passengers and the town can become uncomfortably crowded.
• You should also be aware that certain zones in Croatia's waters forbid fishing or diving, or require special permissions to do so. This is something you can discuss with your yacht broker, or yacht captain when deciding on your itinerary.

There should be a wide selection of yachts to choose from, so there is sure to be something that suits both you and your budget.

Croatian Gulets, traditional wooden yachts with wide beams that offer spacious deck areas and generous accommodation, are a fantastic and cost-effective alternative to a luxury charter yacht. Gulets are available to charter for around €13,500-€15,000 per week, which usually includes food and up to 4 hours cruising per day.

Gulets are also perfect for family charters, or those who simply enjoy spending their time out on deck soaking up the beautiful surroundings of this stunning region.

The perfect time for yacht charters in Croatia is between May to October, with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s, calm sapphire seas and endless days of glorious sunshine.

You should note that Croatia's peak season is in July and August, so expect both higher charter fees and crowded marinas during these months.

Most charters tend to begin in the beautiful historic towns of Dubrovnik or Split before continuing on to the celebrated islands of Hvar, Mljet, Vis and Brač. Alternatively, you can begin in Montenegro in the south, but you should note there may be additional re-positioning fees to pay as most yachts are based out of Split.

Another option is to begin your yacht charter in Venice, Italy then cross the Adriatic to Croatia's breathtaking northern region before cruising down the coast to Zadar or Split.

Once you have decided on your perfect yacht, your yacht broker will then draw up the necessary contract; a legally binding agreement between you and the owner of the yacht. At this point, based on the type of contract, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the yacht up front, with an additional 25-30% of this base rate to cover additional expenses you and your guests are expected to incur whilst on charter.

Moving onto the island of Hvar, although unknown to many tourist, Stari Grad Plain is also on the UNESCO list. This is an ancient stone wall that divides the land into twenty-four plots of grapes and olives, which have been continuously used for the past 2400 years. Croatia's Adriatic coast enjoys a Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. Summer temperatures range on average from 26°C - 30°C, while shoulder months (May and September) tend to be 22°C - 28°C

On 1 January 2023, Croatia joined the Euro ($), which will make vacation currency a lot more straightforward. They also joined the Schengen area on the same day.

The Croatia sailing season runs May to October – the best weather is from June to September, while July and August can get pretty busy!

Best towns to start a yacht charter in Croatia

Split is Croatia's second biggest city and is also a region (including towns like Trogir and Kastela) with a well developed marina network. You can sail to Brac, Hvar and Solta in an easy few hours sailing. Split has been inhabited since Roman times. A gem of a city with its beautiful beaches and fantastic architecture. Diocletian's Palace is one relic you can't ignore, but do spend an evening wandering and enjoying the waterfront Riva promenade while you're at it.

For a longer charter, consider a route out of Zadar in north Dalmatia and sail further afield via the Kvarner gulf and Kornati island, perhaps even south to nearby Montenegro either along the Croatian coast or island hopping along the way. Zadar also has a well developed marina network and is the main point of access to the Krka National park and the northern sailing areas of Croatia.

Dubrovnik, once capital of the great seafaring empire of Ragusa, and jewel of the Adriatic coast, is an ancient walled city from which you can rent a boat after exploring it. You may want a day or so at either end of your trip to explore and absorb both the old and newer parts, and take in the atmosphere of this high end tourist destination. From there, over a week you can find your way north towards Korcula, walled city and rumored birthplace of Marco Polo. Highlights include the Elaphiti islands and gorgeous Mljet National Park, where you can explore by paddleboard and relax in peace.

Croatia's main sailing areas can be divided into four categories, heading south to north up the Adriatic:

Central Dalmatia (Split)

If you've never been to Croatia before, we recommend you charter from the Split area and sail around Central Dalmatia to islands like Hvar and Mljet.

This is the main charter hub of Croatia, and is a hive of activity in the peak summer season, but you can still find the odd quiet anchorage if you're seeking some solace at anchor under the stars.

Kornati Islands (Zadar)

For a longer charter, consider a route out of Zadar in north Dalmatia and sail further afield via the Kvarner gulf and Kornati island, perhaps even south to nearby Montenegro either along the Croatian coast or island hopping along the way.

Zadar also has a well developed marina network and is the main point of access to the Krka National park and the northern sailing areas of Croatia.

One place you shouldn't miss is the Kornati archipelago which is a large nature reserve with stunning views and unspoiled landscape.

You can sail from a number of mainland cities to these islands including Šibenik, Zadar, Tisno and Biograd and anchor for the night in a quiet bay.

The Bay of Telascica, just north of the Kornati National Park (and a National Park in its own right) is outrageously beautiful, with unique geological formations, flora and fauna.

You shouldn't miss the shallow, salt water lake called Mir there too. You can moor in the bay to explore its wonders or stay in Sali, to the NW on the same island.

You are the captain, you plan the route, and you are ultimately responsible for the safety of the boat and all of your crew.

For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is lower cost and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests.

Do you need a licence to charter in Croatia?

If you are on a crewed charter, gulet or captained yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht. This is also the case when you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence (ICC): This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Greece, these include Day Captain (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Captain or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Best times to rent

July and August are the busy months and high season for a boat rental. Regardless of the time of year you will often find very quiet anchorages wherever you sail away from the main urban centers.

As a rule the most expensive time is in July and August but it's cheaper in school-time such as May and September.

For a quieter, less crowded experience, September is the best time of year as the weather is excellent and the seas are still warm.

The Climate

Expect gentle winds and warmth along Croatia's coastline for most of your stay during the season between May and October.

Expect temperatures to be around 14 degrees centigrade /57 degree farenheit as a minimum in May - Northern Europeans will be in their tee shirts. Come July and August it can average 28 degrees centigrade/82 degrees farenheit - still much cooler than Turkey or Greece at that time of year. October sees similar weather to that in May.

There are several winds that appear that can enliven or soak your trip. Below are five of the main ones:

The winds of Croatia

This is a cold, dry north-easterly wind that falls off the mountains close to the coast. You can tell it is coming thanks to clouds forming over the top of mountains that are over 400m high, but is highly localised - if you are more than 4km from the mountains you will hardly notice it.

This is a south-easterly that brings wet weather when there is a high pressure area over the Adriatic. This can sit for days at a time but thanks to the wind direction it brings warmth too.

Mistral (NW)

The Mistral or Maestral is a north-westerly sea breeze that lifts in the morning and dies in the evening - almost perfect conditions for day sailing. It is particularly prevalent in July and August - right at peak sailing vacation season.

Tramontana (N to NW)

This is a rare northerly mountain wind that brings cool winds to the seas. Do be ready to either reef or luff up as the gusts can be very powerful.

How much does it cost for a Croatia Yacht charter?

This really depends on your budget, at the upper end of the scale you can rent superyachts and captained luxury yachts which means you can enjoy a level of luxury that would beat almost any cruise liner afloat. Monohulls are typically around $250/day upwards.

You will need money for insurance too - this can be in the form of a refundable damage deposit on your credit card or by buying non-refundable insurance for the vacation in advance.

If you are paying for a captain, expect to pay $190 per day, and you will need to feed them and tip them at the end of the vacation.

On top of these fees, you will need food, restaurant money (again this is down to what you wish to spend), beverages, fuel for the week and mooring fees.

Yes. Yacht rental in Croatia is legal, it's a fast-growing industry but still smaller than some neighboring countries. You may need certain qualifications to sail particular types of boats, check with the charter company to confirm these details

You can rent a sailing superyacht, a motor superyacht, a sailing catamaran or a motor catamaran, a motor cruiser or monohull sailing yacht combined with small motorboats for days trips. It all depends on the experience you want from your vacation.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a captain, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Book ahead if you want a high season vacation (July and August). More boats are available for less outside these months. September is quieter but the weather is great and the seas are still warm.

You will typically pay 50% up front on reservation the yacht rent and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) your yacht charter company may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a captained on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

If you live inside the European Union, Switzerland or Norway you do not. If you are from a country outside of this region then check with the Croatian Consul or Embassy in your country.

Advanced Provisioning Allowance:

For "Plus Expenses" charters, yachts request an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), which is generally estimated at 20% - 25% of the base charter fee for sailing yachts (catamarans and monohulls) and at 30%-35% for motor yachts. The APA essentially creates a bank account for the Captain to purchase provisions, fuel, dockage, food, beverages, bar, and other consumables on the charterer's behalf. The Captain will keep all receipts and manage a running balance of the account, so that expenditures can be checked at any time. Any amount not used will be refunded at the end of the charter. If during the charter the costs have exceeded the collected APA, then additional funds will be required for the outstanding bills. All purchases are transparent and nothing is marked up. The APA is used purely for the charterer's provisions and charter-related expenses.
